First trip here. The food was outstanding. I had 2 poblanos with tomato sauce and a side of rice. Everything was hot, fresh and tasty. The chips were fresh and the salsa had a great flavor with just a little heat. It's a great place to stop on the way to or from the airport.

Delicious breakfast burritos and a proper southern greeting! A fun family atmosphere with a country boy playing guitar and singing mellow songs as you ingest some fabulous food! You feel like you walked into grandmas house for a delicious weekend breakfast! The chef even came out to ask us how our food was! A must stop on a roadtrip or hungry in Lubbock!

Thermometer

The nachos are nothing but cheese and beans and chips. I have a pretty accurate thermometer and it looks like their thermostat set at 85°. It's really burning hot in here. And they have an extremely loud band. We can't even hear ourselves scream to each other at the table. And they are out of tune, and they keep having extreme feedback damaging our hearing. It seems like the first time they've ever had a speaker and an amplifier, sticking the microphones into the speaker and causing loud squeals. And they just keep doing it. They don't have a clue how they're causing it, but they need to get the microphones out of the speakers. We're leaving early because we are going to have hearing damage and heat stroke at the same time.

A quaint little spot north of the loop, this not-so-far out of the way gem was bustling at lunchtime. The service was prompt and the food was deliciously filling. I couldn't get enough of the carne guisada! Tuesdays are all-you-can-eat tacos. The sign out front advertises the best chile rellenos in Texas, which is quite the claim. I don't know if they are the best in the state, but they were definitely good. I look forward to many return visits.

Stopped for a quick bite on the way home. Great service. Chips and salsa were great. My son had a double hamburger, and my husband and I had mexican food, tacos & quesadilla. It was all great! Live musians were setting up to perform. We would definitely come back.

Wet burrito One Beef with Chile con Queso and HAIR!

I got the wet burritos and they were kind enough to also give me an extra piece of hair. I found hair inside the meat and I knew there was going to be something wrong with my food the way the lady was taking my order and not being patient with me. The service 1/10 the food 7/10. It just seemed too bland. I went through the drive thru and the wait time was 30 minutes. I won't be going here again :)

Beef chili relleno with the red sauce.

This place is a little small and not much for atmosphere but the food is awesome. The best Chili relleno around! Chips & queso is delicious they make their own salsa and it's gooood! Great service and they have live music from local talent all the time.

Food was great The restaurant was different than what I thought it would be before I walked in, but when the food came out, I was happy.

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.

We started with the house chips and salsa trio, which is always a win here. The chips were warm and crisp, and the variety of salsas--from bright and fresh to deeper and more roasted--made it easy to keep reaching for "just one more." A solid way to kick things off. For my main, I went the veggie route, and honestly, this was the standout of the meal. The sizzling vegetable fajitas arrived steaming hot and loaded with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and squash--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and served on a cast-iron skillet that kept everything hot down to the last bite. Colorful, hearty, and surprisingly satisfying, even without meat. The rest of the table went more traditional with enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and queso, and everything looked generous and comforting in that familiar, crave-worthy Tex-Mex way. Portions are filling, flavors are approachable, and it's easy to find something for everyone at the table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a lively bar area and cozy booths that make it a great spot for a casual dinner, family outing, or low-key night out. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out exactly as expected. Abuelo's may be a familiar name, but when you're in the mood for reliable Tex-Mex, solid vegetarian options, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, it absolutely hits the mark.
