Chicken soft tacos with rice and beans.
Hillary B.

This place is the real deal!!! I got the chicken soft tacos with their homemade corn tortillas--so, so good. I will admit that you will need to add a little bit of salt and hot sauce to the meat and beans because they were definitely under seasoned, BUT it's still great. The chips were hot, the hot sauce was tasty, and the waitstaff was very attentive. Also, this restaurant is very clean, and seems to be completely new inside!

Talk about a hidden gem! First time here and the food was DELICIOUS! From the salsa to the variety of plates and tacos you can't go wrong with anything you order! Definitely coming back and trying something different!

This is located in an industrial area. Not where you would commonly look for a good eats place. Their building has been remodeled and now has indoor seating. My husband and I had breakfast there last Sunday. He had fried eggs with a verde sauce. And I had migas, although it wasn't listed as migas on the menu. Our orders were served with a grilled jalapeno pepper, tortilla chips with a red salsa, papas and refried beans and corn tortillas. I can't say enough about the grilled jalapeno. It was delicious - slightly charred, a little tart, maybe lime. The salsa was exceptional. Not sure what was in the salsa, but it was slightly different than the salsa that you generally get in a Tex-mex restaurant. Much better - had a little bite, but not overwhelmingly hot. Hubby said that the verde sauce was the best that he'd ever eaten. I sampled his verde sauce, and the next time we eat there, I will order an entree with verde sauce. The papas were crispy on the outside and soft and creamy in the center. Wow. The refried beans were the best that we've every had. Again, not exactly sure why, perhaps a spice or an herb that's not normally put in refired beans. Whatever their secret is, it produces amazing refired beans. And finally, the corn tortillas-absolutely delicious. They were thicker and softer than most corn tortillas. I think that they were made from white corn, and it was obvious that they were homemade - quality & flavor. The building was spotlessly clean, the service was fast and friendly. The prices on the menu fit our pocketbook. Over all it was an extraordinary dining experience. And we will definitely eat here again.

Great Mexican food and the service is ridiculously fast! Food was very flavorful and tortillas were homemade (except for the tiny street taco ones). Very cute little restaurant...like being in your Abuela's kitchen.

I love this place. I sometimes eat here for lunch and the service is always friendly and fast. And the food is delicious every time!

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.

We started with the house chips and salsa trio, which is always a win here. The chips were warm and crisp, and the variety of salsas--from bright and fresh to deeper and more roasted--made it easy to keep reaching for "just one more." A solid way to kick things off. For my main, I went the veggie route, and honestly, this was the standout of the meal. The sizzling vegetable fajitas arrived steaming hot and loaded with broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes, and squash--perfectly cooked, well-seasoned, and served on a cast-iron skillet that kept everything hot down to the last bite. Colorful, hearty, and surprisingly satisfying, even without meat. The rest of the table went more traditional with enchiladas, rice, beans, guacamole, and queso, and everything looked generous and comforting in that familiar, crave-worthy Tex-Mex way. Portions are filling, flavors are approachable, and it's easy to find something for everyone at the table. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a lively bar area and cozy booths that make it a great spot for a casual dinner, family outing, or low-key night out. Service was friendly and efficient, and everything came out exactly as expected. Abuelo's may be a familiar name, but when you're in the mood for reliable Tex-Mex, solid vegetarian options, and a relaxed, welcoming vibe, it absolutely hits the mark.
