This restaurant is conveniently located down the street and decided to try it for a late lunch. It was not very busy at 1-1:30 with maybe a few tables. I asked if there were any recommendations in comparison to Japanese vs Korean on their menu. My wait staff mentioned the owner was Korean so I chose that route. She recommended the spicy pork bento box if I liked spicy and went with that. The food arrived very quickly. Portions were very fulfilling and packed the leftovers. The tempura vegetables were crisp but not very flavorful with the batter, their dipping sauce is definitely needed. The salad dressing was a refreshing orange citrus flavor with the basic California rolls. The pork bulgogi was plentiful, tender, juicy and flavorful. Lunch specials are reasonable based on the quantity of food that is given. If not, it would be considered pricey. Overall, the food was better than others I have tried although it didn't blow me away.

Great Sushi/Sashimi place in Leander. Spice level is mild and well received. Location being close is a big plus. Tuna Special appetizer - very fresh and dense. Wait staff is friendly. Parking is good but was under repair today and blocked off in several spots . Should be completed as you read this. My feeling - a nice neighborhood spot with good food and attentive staff.

Tonight we had kimchee pancake and the galbi gim. They just recently changed the Menu to showcase more Korean Food. The owner is korean and cooks the korean food herself. Do not miss out on the korean food. Being half korean myself I was pleasantly surprised. They also had perilla leaves as a side banchab. Give it a go. You won't regret it.

Sushi is great, particularly the Pink Lady roll, Umiya roll, the Crystal Valley and the Sunflower roll. The restaurant itself needs some serious help. The fish tanks are green literally! The one by the front door has two fish which are nearly dead, not a pleasant experience when you are dining. If they're not going to keep them up, they should take them out. Normally the service is good but tonight it was incredibly slow! It may be a while before we're back which is sad because it's so close and convenient. We were here an hour and twenty minutes tonight for 3 people and there were only a few tables seated.

We were going to eat lunch here today but saw this on the door so we didn't go. We used to like their food so this is disappointing. The sign said they are still open so I'm guessing lots of unsuspecting people are still ordering food for delivery.

Great selection of sushi and a variety of apps! Service could've been better. Took about 15 minutes for a sake and waters to arrive. I know some places are understaffed, but there were 3 servers on the floor (and it's not a big restaurant). They did seem to have a lot of curbside to-go orders going. We had the miso soup (delicious), and pork egg rolls for appetizer. Our sushi came out before the egg rolls (delicious) No big deal. I'd go again because food was delicious and the variety on the menu!

Wow, coming from LA to Austin, I've been looking for a quality sushi place for almost 2yrs... Finally, this place is it!!!! When I came today, there was no wait time so we were seated very quickly which was a big plus for us. The quality is so much better than 10+ other sushi spots that I've been to in Austin. For the impressive quality, the price is super reasonable too. For anyone who's looking for a legit sushi restaurant in Austin, I'd highly recommend.

We visited this restaurant because we were staying nearby. If you go to this restaurant, I would recommend trying the sushi, hibachi, or anything else that does not need much seasoning. The sushi we had was great, so no complaints about that! However, the ramen we had was sad. The broth was not very flavorful, and the toppings in the ramen were bizarre. It's not very common to see green/red bell peppers and bella mushrooms in the ramen. Maybe shiitake or shimeji mushrooms would have been more appropriate. Good ramen broth requires a long cooking time, so any restaurant not specializing in it may not have the time to cook it well. This place is a perfect stop if you live in Leander and want some sushi, but stay away from ramen or other foods that require any intense cooking.

Stoppped in for a quick lunch. Right around the corner from where I live. Nice lunch combo options. I don't think I picked the best rolls (the rose roll didn't taste quite right) but the crunch roll was good, I enjoyed it. Enjoyed the sake and the chef sent over a seaweed salad (lovely) on the house for no reason which I loved. Service was excellent, attentive but not overbearing. Will be back again to try some different things. read more

We tried this place last night, we will be back. We ordered a couple rolls and a couple appetizers, the prices were decent and the sushi was great. One of the guys had us try the lychee sake and it was sooo good, the sushi chefs were awesome they made a sample roll that was delicious. We went around 730 and it wasn't too busy so we sat at the bar. We tried to order a couple diff bottles of sake but they were out of stock, so we ended up getting the coconut one , not bad but def go for the lychee sake ! Went here last night with the family. A few things. The miso soup bowl was only one thirds of the way full. Thie seafood soup tasted horrible. The sushi's did not taste good either. And the pricing was the same as an upscale sushi restaurant in downtown Austin and in some cases even more expensive, which doesn't make any sense because this restaurant is in Leander and the ambiance and setting was pretty cheap compared to many other sushi restaurants we've been in Austin. Long story short save the money and go to a better or downtown sushi restaurant. Cheers read more

We love this place. It's close to home and it never disappoints so we rarely venture anywhere else when we feel like sushi. The quarantine had us missing our regular sushi fix so we decided to place an order for pickup. The chefs truly outdid themselves. Our order was presented as a beautiful platter which was a feast for the eyes as well as our stomachs. Everything was so fresh and just beautiful. They even threw in a complimentary order of edamame. Beautiful sushi roll plating! Beware that even though they indicate on the menu which rolls contain raw seafood it can be incorrect, which for me was extremely disappointing. I had looked at the menu online and knew exactly what I wanted to order before I got there, but the Red Devils Roll came with raw salmon on top even though it does not say that in the menu! So sad. They replaced it with the Crunchy Shrimp Tempura Roll, but it was just ok, nothing special. The Cedar Park Roll was the star of the night. Perfectly spicy and a little sweet with mango. My bf enjoyed the Rose roll, which does have raw fish. We were given 4 pieces of a baked roll complimentary and watermelon for dessert, I'm not sure if this is standard or because of the issue of raw fish on my first roll. Staff was friendly. We will most likely return. read more

I want so badly to love this place. We've been a few times and the service has been so insanely slow. They were out of things every time we've gone and it just seemed like a second rate sushi joint. We've even ordered to go and it wasn't ready until 20 minutes after the pick up time that they scheduled. The sushi is decent, a little overpriced, but fresh. read more

If I could give this 0 stars I would. We sat at a table and we never saw a server again. After 15 min with no service I went up to the cashier and asked if we had a server and he was confused and replied " that the servers had not discussed who was taking the table" a server then said she would take us but never came to our table. We eventually got up and left. This has been the worst service I have experienced at a restaurant. This was the first time at this location and we will not be back. read more

Went to pick up dinner one night to bring home and felt so welcome and impressed by the exceptional cuatomer service!! My friend and I sat by the sushi bar and chatted w Paul, Lee, and Kevin ... so friendly and engaging ..especially Paul!! We brought home a few special rolls and WOW!! ... so yummy! I tend to be picky w sushi and the food was impressive .. totally recommend them and can't wait to return. read more

So the food was good, had 2 bento boxes, no complaints. When we get the check though, the prices are different...like lots different total of $7 between the 2 boxes. When I asked about that both the servers seemed at a loss what to do. Apparently there's no manager so they couldn't do anything. Fix your menus to reflect current prices. Our server ended up fixing it somehow but meh. read more

First, I have not visited many sushi places so take that for what it's worth.. I really did not care for the sushi. We ordered two different rolls; the crunchy roll and the spider roll. We left ninety percent of the food on the table. It did not taste fresh and had a terrible odor. We have been to Kai sushi and love their food but was really disappointed with Umiya. read more

This place couldn't be in a better location for us. The food is great and the sushi chefs know what they are doing! We have only had sushi and rolls so far but we have gone there twice now and the fish was very fresh and everything tasted great! It might be the best sushi I have had since I moved to Texas, coming from Los Angeles. So glad they deliver and their lunch specials are great! Give them a try and sit at the sushi bar! read more

I have to confess, I have been back to this spot many times and even had opportunity for take out. I typically shy away from the sushi bar, however every time I did I was in for a treat. The service there is amazing, the sushi chefs are great to talk to and we even got to try new things because the staff really wants you to get a taste of what they have to offer. I thought their sushi rolls were creative, you just have to pay a couple of visits to build a knowledge of what they have to offer and pair them with your wants. Don't get me started on their sashimi, it's delicious! Outside of the sushi and sashimi I found their Udon noodles took me back to my years in Japan. As some one who loves great food and excellent service I highly recommend this place. Don't walk in expecting to be wowed, we all have different tastes and sometimes that takes a little discovery on your part. Walk in and expect to meet a fun staff. Dirty. That's all I can say. We have been here a few times since it opened and it was okay but always bad service. We were seated next to the fish tank which smelled and the poor fish were not even moving. The clear plastic table menu was so dirty. My husbands beer was warm. His soup was hot. The one sushi roll we ordered didn't taste right to me so I stopped after one bite. We were one of two tables on a Friday night and our waitress was slow. This place should be spotless especially now with Covid and the slow business on this night. The actual sushi bar was closed for seating due to Covid so I guess it was storage now with all the stuff they had stacked there. We won't eat here again. We went next door for dinner. read more

The sushi was not good at all. It was overly coated in spicy mayo (so if that is your thing, then this might be your place), but there are tons of better sushi places around. Also, when I went in there were no other people in the restaurant and the servers never came by to check if we needed water refilled (we had to get up and ask someone who wasn't our waiter). Overall, I have nothing good to say about the food or service. read more

I stopped in for lunch yesterday and it was my first visit here. First impression, clean and friendly staff. I was sat immediately and drink order was taken promptly. I had the Best Friend roll and the Texas Rangers roll. Both were fresh and delicious. They have a large selection of rolls and a generous lunch menu. This is my absolute favorite restaurant. My wife's favorite is the Katsu ramen and mine is the chicken Yaki Soba. The food is excellent and their timeliness is always perfect. I only order to go and the food is always ready on time. I live about 10 minutes away and the food is always warm when I start eating. 100% I would recommend this place for anyone. read more

I've been here a couple times with my family and it's always amazing. The sushi is honestly some of the best I've had and I'm an avid sushi eater. The roll size and flavor is perfect (spicy tuna is one of my favorites). Also LOVE that they give free miso soup ahead of the meal, always a nice touch before some great sushi. They were so accommodating to Veganize the tempura and veggie fried rice for us. They have a cucumber roll and avocado roll that are vegan as well. Nice to go somewhere that is helpful to modify food for Vegans. Definitely will be back. Service was good and the food was excellent. Great prices as well. read more

He immediately responded with a heavy negative tone saying that he wish they would have told him ahead of time. The entire meal he seemed put off that we had special requests, and only seemed to change his tone when we were close to paying. Simply based on how he treated the situation, we won't be back. Too many places out there that are more accommodating and understanding.

But what set it apart was the tempura inside gave it some crunchy bits that were fun to eat. Yellowtail tornado roll - I really liked the yellowtail in this roll! But I'm not the biggest fan of jalapeño, so this one was just okay for me. Lemon salmon roll - this roll was really light and refreshing! Probably my second favorite of the night. But the citrus flavor was pretty strong, since it had yuzu sauce and sliced lemon on top. I feel like I would have liked it more if it was just the yuzu without the lemon.

When we finally sat down at a regular table, we waited about 15 minutes without a server coming by. I eventually flagged a server down, and we got our order under way. We requested the manager stop by to tell him about the issue with the reservation and the fact that his hostess needs additional training, and surprise, the manager was also not helpful. He did apologize for our reservation being lost, but blamed it on the system and denied any responsibility for taking care of it - basically just told us that "life is life". He did not offer a discount or any kind of relief for the setbacks or bad service. I wasn't expecting the world or anything, but good hospitality dictates that you do more that basically tell us to just deal with it. For the food: the sushi was pretty gnarly - it looked like somebody was angry at the fish when they were slicing. Most things needed salt. Steak and fried rice was good, but the vegetables were pretty much raw. I can forgive quite a bit when it comes to service, especially on graduation/mother's day weekend. But honestly I'm a little impressed at how little the entire staff cared about their guests.

I've since tried Typhoon Shelter Crab -- a first for me, a feast for the eyes and palate -- and the popular cold dish they call Sliced Beef & Tripe in Chili Sauce (夫妻肺片 in Mandarin, also known in English as 'Husband & Wife Lung Slices' and 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith'). Shu Kitchen is very legit and more adventurous than your typical Chinese restaurants in the area (as you can easily tell by the number of Asian customers coming to their door). Although you can order standard dishes like stir-fries, fried rice combos, sesame, orange and General Tso's chicken, broccoli beef and stir-fried green beans, you can also get the likes of Shuwei Xuan Sichuan Spicy Blood Curd Stew (蜀味轩毛血旺), Boiled Bullfrog in Chili Sauce, Boiled Pork Intestines, Boiled Black Fish Filet in Chili Sauce, and one of my favorites, Hot and Sour Chicken Gizzard (sliced). The prices for some of the more esoteric/authentic dishes can run north of $35 and up to around $40, but this is not your typical Chinese fast food joint; the chef is experienced and the ingredients are carefully sourced. Housekeeping note: At this writing there is another Shu Kitchen listing at the same address, but this appears to have been changed from Sushi Express & Poke Bowl, which was at the same location but closed a while back.
