Next the food, not what I expected, the Miso soup was 7 out of 10, but the bento itself Meh, and I order the yum yum fried rice, again not what I expected that was more a sushi dish or better off as one and not as fried rice. The Cali roll, meh and the eel, I really said over rice, not on a plate. We also had to ask for wasabi, I mean "AS IF" my copart had a bento with fish and a cali roll and still zero wasabi, we had to ask for it, I mean even HEB give you some. We arrived about 5:35 we were seated immediately and offered beverages. The Sushi here is good. I enjoy sitting at the bar and watching the sushi chefs. We do wish the property was larger as the tables and booths are pretty close to each other especially the tables down the middle. The end booths encroach on the restroom so we try to avoid those. It's a very busy little place, has lots of repeat customers. Ask for Dallas as your server-he does a great job.

Soto consistently delivers beyond fresh sushi and straight from Japan specialties. Want to mix some meat with your sushi? Then go for their imported Wagyu beef. It will melt in your mouth. The prices are certainly not on the "all you can eat" sushi restaurant scale, but you are paying premium for premium. On this visit, we arrived during their happy hour. Do check out their HH menu; it is more than generous. I'm not going to bore you with our selections, but the sushi is so tender and fresh that you are insulting the chef and the fish by adding soy sauce and wasabi! One highlight was the Spicy Tuna Katsu Maki; this entrée is wrapped in a seaweed cone with asparagus, avocado, wasabi mayo, and eel sauce. Another was Uni from their imported from Japan menu. My oh my, it was so fresh and creamy! If you do not want to break the bank, their HH and lunch specials will do you right. Do make reservations if you wish to sit at the sushi bar. Speaking of bars, they have a full bar and their martinis are perfectly made. You can expect 5-star service at this 5-star restaurant. Who would have thunk that one of the best sushi restaurants (IMHO) in Austin would be in the CP and located in a strip mall next to the Dollar Tree store!

I can see this being a casual and intimate date spot, without venturing into too fancy of a dinner. We got the Fire dragon roll - we mostly ordered this for the spectacle because we saw on the menu that it would be on fire. And it was so cool! It's completely wrapped in foil while on fire, which isn't as cool, but it was still cool regardless. But eating it, this was our favorite that we tried. The eel is so soft, it just melts in your mouth. And the fire in the foil makes the roll so warm and creamy. Which I know isn't something you really want when you think sushi, but it was so good. The rollercoaster roll - I think the taste of this roll wasn't necessarily anything special. It was good and it had a little spicy kick. But what set it apart was the tempura inside gave it some crunchy bits that were fun to eat. Yellowtail tornado roll - I really liked the yellowtail in this roll! But I'm not the biggest fan of jalapeño, so this one was just okay for me. Lemon salmon roll - this roll was really light and refreshing! Probably my second favorite of the night. But the citrus flavor was pretty strong, since it had yuzu sauce and sliced lemon on top. I feel like I would have liked it more if it was just the yuzu without the lemon.

When we arrived at the restaurant, the hostess said that she didn't have the reso on her end; rather than apologizing or making a single effort to fix the issue, she just stared at us. We had to prompt her for clarification and next steps, and had to continue to prompt her through the process of getting us sat. When we finally sat down at a regular table, we waited about 15 minutes without a server coming by. I eventually flagged a server down, and we got our order under way. We requested the manager stop by to tell him about the issue with the reservation and the fact that his hostess needs additional training, and surprise, the manager was also not helpful. He did apologize for our reservation being lost, but blamed it on the system and denied any responsibility for taking care of it - basically just told us that "life is life". He did not offer a discount or any kind of relief for the setbacks or bad service. I wasn't expecting the world or anything, but good hospitality dictates that you do more that basically tell us to just deal with it. For the food: the sushi was pretty gnarly - it looked like somebody was angry at the fish when they were slicing. Most things needed salt. Steak and fried rice was good, but the vegetables were pretty much raw. I can forgive quite a bit when it comes to service, especially on graduation/mother's day weekend. But honestly I'm a little impressed at how little the entire staff cared about their guests.

We arrived on time for our reservation (party of nine) and were told there would be a 10-15 minute wait, which ultimately turned into 45 minutes. I checked in with the hostess several times, and although she eventually found us a table, it was an uncomfortably tight fit. There was no effort made to acknowledge or remedy the situation. At the very least, a complimentary appetizer or drinks would have been appropriate given the inconvenience. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to this restaurant-inconsistent service.

It was well rendered, if a bit salty for my taste, and medium spicy as requested (plenty spicy enough for me). I've since tried Typhoon Shelter Crab -- a first for me, a feast for the eyes and palate -- and the popular cold dish they call Sliced Beef & Tripe in Chili Sauce (夫妻肺片 in Mandarin, also known in English as 'Husband & Wife Lung Slices' and 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith'). Shu Kitchen is very legit and more adventurous than your typical Chinese restaurants in the area (as you can easily tell by the number of Asian customers coming to their door). Although you can order standard dishes like stir-fries, fried rice combos, sesame, orange and General Tso's chicken, broccoli beef and stir-fried green beans, you can also get the likes of Shuwei Xuan Sichuan Spicy Blood Curd Stew (蜀味轩毛血旺), Boiled Bullfrog in Chili Sauce, Boiled Pork Intestines, Boiled Black Fish Filet in Chili Sauce, and one of my favorites, Hot and Sour Chicken Gizzard (sliced). The prices for some of the more esoteric/authentic dishes can run north of $35 and up to around $40, but this is not your typical Chinese fast food joint; the chef is experienced and the ingredients are carefully sourced. Housekeeping note: At this writing there is another Shu Kitchen listing at the same address, but this appears to have been changed from Sushi Express & Poke Bowl, which was at the same location but closed a while back.
