I came in after working out at the driving range in Bee Cave, it's much straightforward to drive up north from there. This is a newly opened restaurant that my mom found out on Red Note. I first stopped by Shu Kitchen, a specialty Sichuan restaurant only a couple of miles from my house, on their official opening day last October and picked up an order of Spicy & Crispy Chicken with rice (see photo). It was well rendered, if a bit salty for my taste, and medium spicy as requested (plenty spicy enough for me). I've since tried Typhoon Shelter Crab -- a first for me, a feast for the eyes and palate -- and the popular cold dish they call Sliced Beef & Tripe in Chili Sauce (夫妻肺片 in Mandarin, also known in English as 'Husband & Wife Lung Slices' and 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith'). Shu Kitchen is very legit and more adventurous than your typical Chinese restaurants in the area (as you can easily tell by the number of Asian customers coming to their door). Although you can order standard dishes like stir-fries, fried rice combos, sesame, orange and General Tso's chicken, broccoli beef and stir-fried green beans, you can also get the likes of Shuwei Xuan Sichuan Spicy Blood Curd Stew (蜀味轩毛血旺), Boiled Bullfrog in Chili Sauce, Boiled Pork Intestines, Boiled Black Fish Filet in Chili Sauce, and one of my favorites, Hot and Sour Chicken Gizzard (sliced). The prices for some of the more esoteric/authentic dishes can run north of $35 and up to around $40, but this is not your typical Chinese fast food joint; the chef is experienced and the ingredients are carefully sourced. Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you--this place holds a delicious secret. While it bills itself as a sushi and poke spot, the real star is their brand-new Chinese menu, which was added two weeks ago. I would definitely come back to try their other chinese dishes for support of new local business. The server (could be the owner too, but not sure) also told us they plan to expand and make it into a late night dinner/sake/drinks type of place in the near future. The **Build-Your-Own Poke Bowl (3.8/5)** was decent. The salmon and tuna were fresh, but the overall combination was underwhelming and haphazard (we found unrequested jalapeños!). For the price, it's fine, but it's not the main attraction. Boiled fish in chili sauce - (4.5/5) this dish was surprisingly very good. The fish is fresh and sweet and if you like the spicy numbing reaction from the Szechuan peppercorn, you will love this. The bowl has a generous amount of fish with a nice balance of perfectly cooked cabbage, and cucumber. I will certainly order this again if I ever come back. Stirfry udon with beef - (4/5) The beef was extremely tender stir-fried in the juicy oil-drenched flavorful udon noodle. Appreciate the good amount of vegetables included in this dish. Located in a converted trailer house, this place is a hidden gem. It was very clean, cool, and the staff was very attentive. I was craving poke and saw that this place had good reviews. First off, a 12.99 poke bowl is almost unheard of. It's a deal! The rice was cooked well, which already makes this place above poke chains. I got the salmon bowl and it was delicious, the fish was cold and fresh. The only thing I think I would change is the order which they construct the poke bowl. I prefer my flavoring to go on the fish,onions, and edamame instead of putting the sauces on the completed bowl. Other than that, I will be here again! read more

Suchi Express is in what appears to be a business duplex on Anderson Mill Road...other half is empty with many stacked boxes. If you blink you might miss it. Suchi Express lived up to its name as it delivered my shrimp tempura roll in less than 5 minutes. It was fast with fresh ingredients. Unique to this roll was the tempura as it was crunchier than the standard tempura. Suchi Express would work great for those folks on their lunch break or taking a quick break from work. Suchi Express is very reasonably priced with most items of interest were under $10 and as low as $4.99. Great value for the price... The décor is pretty basic with an Asian influence through prints throughout the restaurant. Suchi Express is super clean with sparkling white floors. Such a cute little sushi restaurant! We were in the area and couldn't figure out what to get and found Sushi Express! We ordered the tuna tower, shrimp tempura roll and a poke bowl. All were fantastic and such a great price! Our waiter was very helpful and so friendly. I think a lot of their business is from call in orders but when we went we were the only family there. My wife and I went here for dinner - we split three rolls plus an order of edamame. Everything was great, the rolls were well-constructed and used fresh ingredients, and the edamame was tasty (quite spicy, which I like). The restaurant was very clean and the staff was quite friendly. We live a couple of miles from here, and I can see this becoming a regular lunch spot for us. I'll try the poke next time! read more

Its nice to see more poke style restaurants popping up in the northern austin area. Sushi Express caught my eye while driving down Anderson Mill. Overall taste was average however the bowls weren't as pricey as some other places. They just opened so hopefully they can improve overtime. Clean store and friendly, but seemed short handed when I was there as they were making orders and handing out pick ups at the same time mid preparation. I got a ahi tuna and salmon bowl and my partner got a shrimp bowl which are usually not raw at other poke spots. Their shrimp was undercooked since they boil them whole so just a heads up. It would be better if they cut the pieces in half or smaller for those people that enjoy sushi but cannot eat raw seafood. read more
