HH Veggie Quesadilla
Ron O.

Nice dining room, bar and lanai seating options right by the beach, about halfway between Marriott Ocean Club and Whaler's Village. Happy Hour weekdays 2 to 5 pm including a decent selection of $10 shareables, $2 off beer, $3 off wine by the glass, and $5 off cocktails. We came really for Happy and stayed for a bit of dinner too... * HH Pork Potstickers (5 pieces) -- Good flavor, nice and crisp on the outside. Nice mango salsa. * HH Green Beans with Mac Nut -- No complaints * HH Rosemary Fries -- Good if fresh out hot. * HH Veggie Quesadilla -- Good. Comes with a slightly spicy green salsa. * HH Salad -- Nice fresh mixed greens, tomato, avocado, pickled red onions. * HH Tako (Octopus) Escargot -- Surprisingly good and buttery garlicky, served with focaccia. * Coconut (Grilled) Shrimp -- Nice fresh shrimp with a coconut dipping sauce. * Surf and Turf -- Filet was tasty and tender, but the mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes made this dish very salty (even though we said no added salt). The lobster ravioli was good. * Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich -- Good share dessert, vanilla ice cream been chocolate cookie crust. Not overly sweet. Nice selection of beer and wine. Service was very friendly and we were well taken care of by Maddy.

All right, the food the service the ambience the location everything is just right, but the potstickers are ridiculously delicious and available at a discount during happy hour as all the drinks or discounted quite significantly like five dollars or so... I also have the burger which was believe or not incredibly delicious mushrooms and all the good stuff with definitely a higher quality ground beef. You can watch the sunset from the inside of the restaurant or from the outside you won't be unhappy here.

Pork potstickers : 8.5 Spicy

Lilikoi lemon drop : 7 (solid, lemon drop, no passionfruit flavor) Virgin Mai tai: 7 Pioneer mill : 6 Pork potstickers : 8 (very spicy, dad loved them and rated a 9. Mom could not eat them. Katie even liked. But definitely spicy.) Crabcakes : 9 delicious Corn chowder : 9.5 incredible Caesar salad : 7 , average, not get second corn chowder or crab cakes instead steak frites: 7.5-8 , french fries were good, large portion, tender meat, expensive. Monchong fish special with eggplant ravioli :8 (fish and sauce delicious, eggplant ravioli is inedible. Zucchini is boring. Lobster was great.) I already said fish and sausage. Maui nui venison: 7 Coconut shrimp : 9 (grilled with coconut sauce, mom even loved) Ice cream sandwich : 5 (very large, OK flavor) Chocolate mochi cake : 3 (weird texture)

My wife and I decided to try Ulu Kitchen as we noticed it was another (and the only) Ulu on the island. We have been to many or his other restaurants and love them so thought we would give it a try. It was located right by the beach and the island vibe was prevalent! I was not that hungry but we ordered some gyoza for an appetizer which was delicious and my wife ordered a burger and since I was not that hungry, I thought I would go straight for desert! I ordered their ice cream sandwich-thinking it would be a small cool desert for the island evening. However, I was pleasantly surprised-it was extra large! Feel free to refer to my picture in the review but it was delicious, one of the best I have ever had! My wife enjoyed the burger as well. Service was fantastic! We think we found another great spot to dine at in Maui!

I would technically give this place 4.5 stars if that was an option! The surf & turf duo was spectacular - filet was cooked perfectly and flavor for the entire dish was phenomenal - mashed potatoes and green beans seasoned well. Apps were not anything crazy or unique which is why I would give it 4.5. Drinks were good, ambiance and view was superb. This is located at the Westin resort, you can get parking for free validating your ticket at the front desk. Our server did a great job as well.

Went back - yum!

Didn't take a photo but had a classic breakfast here and the chef cooked it in olive oil for me (allergies). Everything was great and bacon was smoked so had great flavor. Smashed potatoes were yummy. Bar service was great! Very efficient, breakfast came out fast!

Egg Benedict

We came here every day for breakfast, since it was literally 1 minute away. 3 times for breakfast and 1 time for happy hour. During breakfast, they open at 7, and there's a short line. For breakfast, I got the Pete's Benedict and The Cure twice. Pete's Benedict was good, rich hollandaise sauce but couldn't eat it more than 1 day. The Cure is their version of ramen noodles with an Hawaiian twist, they put Kailua pork for the protein, along with an fried egg, and a bunch of veggies - carrots, bok choy, mushrooms, bean sprouts and onions. It was salty, but really good for a night of drinking. It's literally called the cure because it cures hangovers. lol. It was delicious. My husband got the blueberry and lilikoi pancakes one day, it was really good, very Hawaiian. And the kids menu was eggs, bacon and 3 fried potatoes. My toddler enjoyed it every day. They don't serve drinks until 8am, due to state laws. For HH we got the famous mai tai with lilikoi foam, they didn't do it well here. It was too much lemon, felt like you were drinking only lemon juice with some rum, but the lilikoi foam was consistent and good. Skip the mai tai and go to MonkeyPod, bartenders are more experienced there. Overall, we enjoyed breakfast here everyday.

Surf-n-Turf

Very popular, cute spot with incredible views right on the Kaanapali boardwalk. The restaurant is accessible through the pedestrian path or through the Westin. If you make reservations but are not staying at the hotel, you can have the restaurant validate your valet parking ($40). Our server, Brian, was very friendly and offered his recommendations. Overall the food was good, but there were definitely some oversalting issues. It seemed like the different components of the dish were seasoned but not tasted as a whole - leading to salt being slightly overpowering. Pricing is expected for the location. They have live music right next door and there's plenty of walking/shopping opportunities for post meal.

Order the tako escargot..... in fact, order two servings of it. One of my favorite bites on Maui now!!

We came for dinner, and the service was fantastic. The monkeypod mai tai was delicious, and we also highly recommend the ahi sashimi (super fresh and paired perfectly with their ponzu soy sauce) and surf and turf (we like our steak on the rarer side and thought it was perfectly cooked). Our only thing was that we felt like the food was a bit expensive for the portion sizes and quality (although this is not uncommon for all the Merriman restaurants).

Ulu kitchen provided us a lovely experience! They are located right by the ocean and have amazing views! We managed to get a table during happy hour and got some cocktails and appetizers for a great deal! Everything we had was wonderful! Hot, delicious and fresh food. Our server was also very kind. Would definitely recommend.

We were seeking a dinner spot with a view one night in our trip to Maui and Ulu Kitchen surprisingly had same day reservations available. We snagged a 6:15pm in September and had the most insane view of the sunsetting over the ocean. By some crazy chance, we were seated at a table closest to the ocean. It was such a beautiful meal. Our server rocked- she was super attentive and friendly. Everything we ate was delicious- the crab cakes were very fresh, my scallops were incredible, and the macadamia nut crusted mahi mahi my husband ordered was delicious. We ended up splitting everything. They have a great cocktail menu as well. I enjoyed the After Midnight.

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. The reviews vary so greatly but glad we stopped by. Special sounded so good that we all got it and it did not disappoint. Everything was fresh, flavorful and delicious from the salad and veggies to the fish to the ravioli. I can't believe I'm saying this but I think the ravioli was the best part of a very scrumptious plate. Reservation was at 6:15pm on Tuesday. We arrived a little early and were seated. Our table was the perfect spot, closest to the ocean. Great for catching the sunset and people watching. Parked in their lot which was quick and easy. I will definitely be back. Would love to see this special get a permanent spot on the menu. It was so good!

Ask the Community - Ulu Kitchen

Is this restaurant kid friendly?

Yes, my wife and I ate there daily when we were in Hawaii. It is a good casual outdoor dining experience. If you are going there for breakfast, we recommend the Cure or Hawaiian Chilaquiles. Both were excellent in taste and filling every time we had…

The ocean view was incredible, and they have outdoor seating so you can enjoy the water while you eat. Definitely a nice way to spend lunchtime! Service was friendly, fast, and accommodating. We decided to order family style and share a few things since we weren't that hungry. We got the Furikake Garlic Fries, which are tossed in butter, garlic, and a nori-sesame mix. So good! We also ordered the Shoyu Poke; Fried Noodles with egg, kamaboko, and Spam (asked them to hold the bean sprouts); and the Teriyaki Beef. The beef plate comes with mac salad and two scoops of rice, so you get a good amount of food. Everything was great for a casual lunch! The restaurant was clean, and parking was easy with plenty of stalls right out front. Always appreciate that when you're out exploring and making stops around the island. Good food, friendly service, and an amazing ocean view. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in Lahaina!

Disappointing Experience - Overpriced for the Quality…read more I haven't been to Aloha Mixed Plate in years, and I was really looking forward to coming back. My family and I visit their sister restaurant, Star Noodle, quite often, so I was expecting the same level of quality. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We visited today at 1:15 PM, and I have to say I left pretty disappointed. The shoyu chicken was dry, and the overall food quality just didn't match the price. For a family of five, our bill came out to $178, including soft drinks. That's a lot of money for a casual plate lunch experience. What was also disappointing was being told by our server that they do not offer a kamaʻāina discount. As a local, it's always nice when businesses recognize and support the community that supports them. I understand we live in a tourist destination, but the prices should still reflect the quality of the food and overall experience. Unfortunately, Aloha Mixed Plate felt more like an overpriced tourist spot than the local favorite I remembered. At these prices, I honestly wouldn't even recommend it to visitors. My recommendation? Save your money and head to Star Noodle instead. We go there often, and the quality and experience have been much more consistent. I really wanted to enjoy coming back, but sadly, this visit was a letdown. 3 stars.

A Maui Tradition for Over 30 Years…read more We've been coming to Hula Grill every time we visit Maui for over 30 years, and it's become a tradition we wouldn't want to miss. The view is always spectacular, the fish is consistently fresh, and their Mai Tais are still among the best on the island! We dined in the main restaurant on October 7, and overall, the service was pretty good and the food was decent, although not quite as memorable as it was 20 years ago. Unfortunately, the restaurant has become increasingly crowded over the years, which is understandable given its popularity as a tourist destination. One disappointing experience was dining in the bar area, where there's sand on the floor. During our visit last year, the area was filled with flies, which was pretty disgusting. Needless to say, we won't be dining in that section again. We've found the main restaurant to be a much better experience. Despite a few disappointments, Hula Grill remains a Maui classic for us. You can't beat the oceanfront setting, fresh fish, and excellent Mai Tais. We'll likely continue to visit on future trips, but we do hope the food and overall experience can recapture some of the magic we remember from years past.

I'd tried the Hula Grill in Waikiki and thought the…read morefood was good, not wow, but this was a choice made by others in our small group, so I just went along because of the excellent location by the Whalers Village shopping center on one side, and the beach and ocean views on the other. Unfortunately, we were a bit delayed by our flight and hotel check in that we got here a bit late, after the sun had already set.....sadly, we missed that. The place was absolutely packed!.....but we had reservations, checked in, and waited about 10 minutes after our reservation time, and was then given a pretty decent table inside vs an outdoor table closer to the beach. Service was nice, friendly, and helpful.....so no complaints about that. As for the food....whilst walking to our table, we saw servers carrying trays of yummy looking fish and chips and tacos, but later found out that they were serving diners at the bar area, so these items were not available in the more "formal" Hula Grill restaurant section....bummer. Anyway, it was getting a bit late for us on California time, so we all chose to eat light...I orderd the Chilled Seafood Platter, and others in the group ordered the Grilled Fish, Roasted beets, Wok Charred Iwamoto Noodles, Seafood Poststickers, and ended everything with a huge slice of their signature Hula Pie. My Seafood Platter was served chilled with Kiawe charred sashimi grade ahi, a couple of small lobster tails, grileld and chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail, and some sides of kimchi, and wasabi. Yes, everything was very fresh and delicious, but I truly expected the portion to be much bigger, considering it's called a "Platter." Was a bit disappointed as others at our table wanted to try some of my seafood, but I had to say NO as I would be left with close to nothing to eat had I shared it. The other issue we all had was with the Lobster, Shrimp, and Scallop Potstickers. It came with a measly 5 small and flat pieces with so little stuffing that you couldn't even taste the seafood inside....even if you had put the whole thing in your mouth at once. It just need much more stuffing.....or what's the point? Whilst walking to the mens room, I walked by the kitchen and saw several plates of other dishes being put out for servers to serve to the diners......yea, the portion sizes of everything were so tiny!!! This is not something I really expected from such a restaurant......yea, the quiality may be quite good, but you'd never fill up on any of these entrees. It was a pretty good experience here, but it was more about the setting than the food.

My wife and I had heard about Star Noodle so much that it was time we finally tried it - our reservation was for 4:45 and we were promptly seated at a table for two with a view of the water. We decided to try a few starters, then move onto an entree or two. Steamed pork buns: the softest, fluffiest, bao bun we've ever had (you can order 3 or 4 to an order.) plenty of pork and veggie filling, and very tasty all around...these are a signature dish, so I recommend ordering if nothing else. Sticky adobo ribs: another solid offering - the adobo was tangy and tasty, and the outer texture of the rib was a little crunchy as if they briefly flash-fried it before serving. I'd definitely recommend this dish as a second appetizer... Green beans: I wanted to be a fan, but the dish lacked any flavor. In retrospect, I would have asked for some type of drizzled sauce to help amp it up a bit. But it's a light, clean, dish that you may want to try if you're sampling healthier items...
