A South Indian food is mainly good when the Sambar and chutneys are good. Chutney was very very very average . Coconut smelled wierd. I asked them if they had tomato or any other spicy chutney and they didn't have it .. really ? A South Indian hotel without spicy chutney ?? Sambar also was average . Less salt .. dosa was good .. my son liked it . Uthappa was ok.. it was huge and couldn't even eat of it because the Sambar/chutney combo wasn't good . Thayir vadaj was cold . Udipi is a vegetarian restaurant and has some wonderful authentic South Indian food. All the appetizers rock and I was surprised how good the Papdi chaat was! The Thaali is pretty nice (both kinds) with fresh made sambar and dosa each time that we've gone. The medu vada are highly recommended along with nearly all their dosa offerings. Parking is ample here and the ambience is very casual. One thing to note is that they do not make the naan in-house so one time that I got it with my curry was this tough frozen-to-roasted naan but when I talked to the manager they informed me that the wait staff was supposed to inform everyone that Naan isn't house made. Good place to get dosa in Cary. They have a lot of options for dosa and other food items as well. The service was good and the ambiance is nice. I had a yearning for dosa, looked up places on Yelp, and found this one pretty close. I had lunch on a weekday a couple of days after the new years day and there just one or two customers. I chose a Andhra Special Dosai and it came out super fast, possibly because they weren't very busy but also had a lot of experience with dosas - they've got about a dozen different types of their menu. The dosa was great! It was extremely long so it might have been awkward to pick up. I didn't have a knife at first so I made do with my fork but eventually asked for a knife to help me devour it. The menu said it was was *paper thin* and it truly was! I've never had a dosa quite that thin before but it was very good. The server warned me that it was spicy - I've learned that spice tolerance varies but I have a pretty high tolerance. I was fine with the spice and probably could have gone a little hotter. We are from Florida and went to this restaurant with my family for dinner. Food was ok but my kids found it to be too spicy even though they said it is not. However, the big deal there was a huge cockroach running around the tables and walls. We had to call the staff and they were running around trying to catch it and take it out. They did not bother wiping down the tables where the cockroach was. A few minutes later, more customers were seated at those tables. Yuck. Will not be returning to this restaurant. The accompanying sambar and coconut chutney are flavorful with subtle heat. Together, the combination is delicious! The paper dosa is comically massive, probably over 3 ft long! The daal papri chaat was also excellent, a good balance of sweet, spicy, and tangy. The portion is huge, definitely shareable. I've always sat outside, and received courteous service. When we first got there we had a waiter that spoke great english was important because me and my friends are strict vegans and wanted to make sure the communication was clear. he took amazing care of us and made sure everything was perfect. Do not believe the waiter when he says the South Indian thali will feed one person only. It'll feed two. It'll feed more than two, in fact. Don't do what I did and also order a Jaipur paneer dosa that you'll have to take home and heat up for dinner in the oven. Well, actually - you might still want to do that. The dosa is fantastic, maybe one of the best I've ever had, even after being in the fridge and then being in the oven. And the coconut chutney served with it is undeniably the best I've ever had. I'm not too crazy about overly coconutty things, but I topped my dosa with it down the last drop. It didn't overwhelm that special combo of sour-crispy dosa mixed with heavily spiced paneer, peas, and onion, it just put a sheen of light refreshingness on it. I can say only a few critical things about the thali, one being that it's too expensive ($21!) and one being that the raita is half raita and half rice pudding. But the dal was amazing and tasted somehow of rosewater, the green beans were sear-your-tongue spicy, and the two orangey soup/curries looked identical but tasted worlds apart. And don't sleep on the samosa. Samosas can be kind of throwaway potatoey things - this is not. It explodes with flavor and crunch. This has become my new addiction. Dosas are amazing and so tasty and massive. You wouldn't expect it but it is so filling. I had the onion masala dosai. You expect there to be a lot of carbs but no it was refreshing because the bread is not as thick as a pancake but more similar to a crepe and best part is that. Eating with your hands is okay! Expect there to be a mess. Also don't be afraid to ask more of the additional side curry sauce. The white coconut mixture is a nice refresher from all the spices and it was sweet.
