This is my go-to when I want Indian food. Everything I have tried is delicious. The chicken momo is really tasty, but use the red dipping sauce with caution. It's spicy! We always get two orders of the crispy cauliflower because it's so tasty. Most of the dishes let you choose your spice level when ordering online, which is nice. The staff are always friendly and polite. The restaurant is warm and welcoming with dark wood and mixed with bold colors. I highly recommend stopping in to give their extensive menu a try. read more

I feel a little torn between 3 and 4 stars for Kathmandu Kitchen, but I'm going to lean positive with 4 stars. I grabbed take-out from here recently and I was a little disappointed by the quality of the butter chicken. It wasn't terrible but the competition is really fierce because there are so many great restaurants serving this cuisine in the area. I will say that we ordered it mild (so that my preschooler would enjoy it) and it was definitely mild, unlike some of the other restaurants in the area :) The sauce just didn't have the depth of flavor that I've experienced at other places. The rice was slightly overcooked, and the naan were not bad but were a little overly chewy. I will say that my wife loved her lamb saag and my mother-in-law really enjoyed her saag paneer, so there's that. Overall, since my family liked it so much, I'd order from here again, but I'd get something different from the butter chicken next time. read more

The biryani is also super good, and I love the tea they offer at the beginning of the meal. Service is exceptional, and while I've never had their takeout I bet it's just as delicious. Came for dinner on a Saturday evening and the restaurant was fairly empty. This along with the Himalayan instrumental music playing in the background made for an overall peaceful ambiance. The food took a little while to come out, maybe around half an hour. I ordered the chicken curry which was delicious. The chicken was very tender, not dry at all! I also tried some of the shrimp palak which one of my friends ordered, and it was amazing. The spinach sauce was creamy, buttery, and very flavorful. Every bite of this meal was amazing! Food and flavor wise I would give them an easy 5/5, but service could be a little faster and the portions could be a bit bigger hence the overall 4/5. I got takeout from this place on Friday night before the snow was supposed to start. Placing the online order through the website was very straightforward and easy. Prices are reasonable and comparable to other restaurants in the area. I ordered one order of the classic veggie momos, malai kofta, garlic naan, baingan bharta, and tandoori roti. You're able to modify the spice level to your preference, so I chose medium for the malai kofta and "medium plus" for the baingan bharta. My mom had most of the baingan bharta, so I didn't have much, but what I tried was tasty! I had the malai kofta and momos, both of which were absolutely excellent. The garlic naan was also quite good. It seemed nice from the inside when I went to pick up the food and was pretty empty, so I'd love to go back and try other menu items while dining indoors! read more

Never thought I would be writing it but here goes: Cary is so full of Indian/Nepalese places that for my wife and I some of them have fallen between the proverbial cracks. We had actually been driving by KK on the way to our two standbys and had been to Golden Hex across the street but had no clue KK was tucked away at the intersection of Maynard and High House. Everest Nepali has been awful the last two times we have been there and Himalayan Range is closed on Mondays so we ended up at KK last night. I've tried probably a dozen or so restaurants of its ilk over the past eight or nine years and Kathmandu Kitchen is the best meal I've had, hands down. Service was just a super nice woman who was really on top of things and knowledgeable about the menu. My wife and I shared two appetizers and two curries -- here's our take on the meal: 1. Samosa chaat -- I'm not a bit fan but this one was totally good. You could tell the samosas were made in-house and it wasn't drowning in chana masala (Everest Nepali's was so much it was inedible!); 2. Crispy cauliflower -- basically gobi Manchurian. This version was excellent as the florets were cut large enough to the point where you could still taste the cauliflower and not just breading; 3. Bhindi Masala -- delicious, as good a version of this okra curry as I've had anywhere although the 'hot' could have been spicier (next time I'll ask for extra hot) And 4. Lamb Bhutawa -- one of the best things I've eaten in a long time and potentially the best Indian/Nepalese dish I've ever eaten. The lamb is perfectly moist and full of complex and savory flavors. It's a dry curry so not creamy or saucy but man is it amazing. We killed it and are already planning a return visit for more Bhutawa. Below are items we ordered with review. -mango lassi: really good! -Himalayan masala chai: milky but still tasty. Probably one of the few chais I enjoyed at a restaurant in the US -veg classic momo: this was a little disappointing. I expected more maybe. There was too much salt in the stuffing. It comes with 2 sauces which were nice - butter chicken with butter naan: husband and son loved this! Probably the best butter chicken we've had in the US. Usually at other places the dish is too sweet. -veg chow mein: this dish was weird and different . Usually this dish is simple and doesn't have and sauce. Not sure if this dish was made Nepali style. I'll start off by saying that I love Nepalese food and when a restaurant has both Indian and Nepalese food then heck, I get the best of both worlds. So you're probably wondering... why the 3 stars? Well service was off and the food was just A-OK. The restaurant is located within a strip mall. You won't have any trouble finding parking here but you might have some trouble finding the actual restaurant lol. Maybe it's my bad eyes or I'm easily distracted but the signage is really small. I literally had to walk the whole plaza to find it lol. When I finally found the place and went in I was immediately drawn to the beautiful decor on the walls. It really made me feel inclined to just walk around the restaurant just to look at everything. That is.... until I heard the words "Pick up or what?" Hahaha. I said "dine-in" and a lady led me to a table. It wasn't long before the lady came by again and took my order. I chose the mango chicken curry and chicken momo's. I was taken aback when she asked me how spicy I want my curry to be on a scale of 1 - 10. I have a pretty high spice tolerance level so I said 9. My food came out pretty quick. I took my first bite of the chicken curry whIle the staff watched from afar. Their level 9 tasted like a 5 but then again, maybe it's my spice tolerance level? Idk. Flavor was good though so no complaints. The chicken momo's were okay. I've had better back in CA but it did its job. The restaurant is pretty. Staff and service was subpar. Food was meh. This is incredible food, a lovely indoor atmosphere and plenty of options to choose from. The chef (and owner?) even has specialty Naan for us Gluten intolerant individuals to enjoy. I have been eating here off and on for a few months now and each time, the care and attention to not only my order, but also my comfort has been above and beyond that experienced at other restaurants. Lastly, the food is so similar to what my Indian friends in Seattle used to bring me to eat, I sometimes wish I was still in Seattle so I could bring them here. So give them a try. Wonderful restaurant and very nice staff! I started off with the peshwari Naan and Chicken MoMo(Classic), and finished with the Tandoori Duck Tikka Kabab. My partner enjoyed Chicken Biryani. I asked for my food Indian hot and Carolyn asked for hers negative one on the hot scale! We had a blast. Spicy and hot but not too hot for me. Overall a really fantastic experience. The inside of the restaurant is done very nicely and the seating was maintained as was the bar in the same setup that the former restaurant used. Although I'm sad to see the Italian restaurant go, as I really enjoyed their tiramisu and creme brulee, Kathmandu is awesome and will definitely see us again! read more

Tbh I'm writing this review immediately after having some disappointing Indian food at another restaurant, but these people make the dang most consistent food every single time, and I have had their food dozens of time. I had no idea Cary had such a Nepalese presence - enough to merit (I believe) 4 restaurants, with Kathmandu Kitchen being the most recent one to open. With this location being previously occupied by an Italian restaurant, there was still some decor hanging that gave it an Italian feel (a poster of Rome in the men's bathroom), but I can understand why, with the place having a family-owned-and-run feel to it. We started with the chicken momo, which were quite flavorful, but I wish it came with more. There were only 8 momos, and the dish was $8. I ordered the Himalayan Lamb Chops, which came out on a sizzling plate and smelled delicious. The lamb flavor and taste was pretty good, but the meat itself was dry. I had to ask for a yogurt sauce (probably not the Nepalese thing to do) to help with the dryness of the meat. They graciously provided some sauce free of charge, which I really appreciated. My wife ordered the Chicken Palak, which was basically chicken in spinach. The flavors were ok, but the chicken - like the lamb - was dry. Both entrees came with basmati rice, and we also ordered a side of garlic naan, which was delicious. Overall, the food itself was not bad, but the prices were a little higher than what I would have expected. The service was fantastic, though - very helpful and thorough in explaining things, incredibly attentive to our needs, and pleasantly prompt. read more

Kathmandu Kitchen serves the best momos I've ever had. They're stuffed thick with paneer and vegetables shredded thin, and have a strong herby flavor even without the delicious orange tangy dipping sauce. The goat curry is also excellent, with the sole exception of some of the meat being overcooked, which is a pet peeve of mine, but I was able to overlook it since the sauce was so damn tasty. We were going to order it at least medium-plus and possibly spicy, but when our server told us that even she liked her food medium, we decided to go with that. It was decently kicky, but in case it isn't enough for you, you can add the table red chili sauce. If you've been suffering from a cardamom deficiency, the carrot pudding here will whip you into shape REAL quick. Just be careful not to crunch into the seeds unless you want all the air you inhale to taste like cardamom for the rest of the day. read more
