Pork Shabu Cold Udon
Elyse W.

Got the Pork Shabu Cold Udon: Cold Udon in Special Sauce, Pork, Nori, Shiso, Green Onions, Daikon Radish. It had a strong flavor for a cold udon and was refreshing on a hot day. The broth was interesting because it was gelatinous but this texture made it stick to the noodles well. The udon noodles were the most bouncy and QQ texture I had yet! Highly recommend their udon! Service during lunch was fast and they have lunch specials.

Yelp Elite All Star Jackie K and I met here for their 11a.m. opening. We were the first 2 cars fronting the restaurant but the second group in to find a table. Many tables to choose from: counter, against one wall or in the middle of the restaurant. Wonderful cheery welcome with a smile as the doors were opened. Even the chef gave us a happy greeting. First time dining here for both of us. The decor is very bright, happy, Japanese-y. The food came out quickly. If you enjoy eating udon noodles both hot or cold you will enjoy it here. They have lunch sets as well. Water is refilled, hot tea that smells super yummy ends the meal. Even as we left the door was held open for us and both workers bid us farewell. I couldn't leave without asking to take their photos.

The first time I came here, I was just so impressed and everything was delicious! I was meeting up with friends for pau hana and I didn't realize most of the city had Friday off because of the 4th of July weekend. We were going to meet somewhere else, but I suggested here. Cheerful greeting when I came in. They have really good AC! Ordered a pitcher of beer, some edamame, and fried udon noodles. This is something I've never had and they are addicting! We had the tofu salad which was really good! I also loved the cream cheese stuffed fish cakes(?) soooooo good! For dinner I had the Nobeyaki udon which was really good and I loved the broth! Again, a really great place to come to! Mahalo Udon Yonpachi!

Nice Japanese restaurant serving homemade udon. Great staff. I thought my dipping udon was delicious, and had a sukiyaki broth. Udon fries was a first for me. The bowl udons are somewhat small, but you can add a tendon bowl for 6.75. Takoyaki is fried so not my favorite. Karaage was not bad.

TL;DR: Homemade udon noodles has a good texture but their special dipping udon is very mid. The other dishes like chicken tempura aren't too good either. 1/FOOD: We were excited for another homemade udon shop, where we could appreciate the chewy udon noodles either in hot soup or dipping form. Yonpachi offers a special dipping udon, with a rich hot pork broth. However this special wasn't all that good. The portion was small, the dipping broth was super oily, and the thinly sliced pork were all clumped together. That said, it was flavorful. I definitely recommend the dipping udon with the pork (not chicken) with mushroom. We also got the chicken tempura. It's a bit heavy and tasted like a chicken nugget. The edamame was pretty standard. 2/SERVICE: Service was OK. There was only one server when we went. As 10 other people arrived, service did get a bit slow. 3/LOCATION: Lots of free parking in the strip mall.

Came for lunch and the sets had good variety. I got the nikujiru set which is a dipping udon with a rich mushroom and pork broth. The udon was the perfect chewy texture! In addition to the udon/sauce there's seasoned rice, gobo, and pickled veg. Our sets came out extremely quickly. The staff were so friendly too! Also got the takoyaki, which didn't have the traditional soft/chewy exterior. It had a more fried shell around the batter itself. We tried their green tea and hojicha sorbet for dessert. And the texture was a bit unexpected. It had an icy consistency, which we thought maybe would've tasted better if we ordered their fruit flavors (peach or yuzu). They came in these really cute single serving disposable cups!

Short review as I don't have too much time. Excellent service! Food came out fast and was it was ono. The udon noodles were perfectly cooked and chewy and went well with the cold dipping broth. Parking is right off of keeaumoku. Go for lunch, perfect size meal.

After working out at the gym for nearly two hours, we cleaned up and changed into clean streetwear, then wanted to eat comforting Asian noodles or lighter lunch entrees. My husband suggested having soup noodles at a Chinese restaurant in Kapahulu's Market City. Still, McCully's Udon Yonpachi struck my fancy more because I remembered reading an article written in Honolulu Magazine's October 2025 newsletter, about their silky, slurpy yet chewy udon noodles and lighter izakaya-style dishes. Plus, we could get to Udon Yonpachi faster since it's closer to our gym than Kapahulu. When we arrived, there were several open parking spaces in the private, shared parking lot in front of the restaurant on McCully Street. Upon entering the restaurant, we were surprised to find it wasn't busy at all, and the female server welcomed us with a hearty "irrashaimase!" And motioned to us to sit anywhere in the restaurant. She quickly brought over the menus and asked if we wanted any beverages besides iced water. While she left to bring us glasses of water, more hungry diners entered, and we chuckled about getting our lunch order in quickly as the restaurant filled. Our server was friendly and offered to explain the lunch menu since this was our first visit, but we figured out what we wanted and ordered before the larger groups who had just entered the restaurant could. FOOD: -Niku Kinkorojiru Tsuke Udon Set: I was attracted to this Tsuke udon set because I enjoy eating dipping noodles. I could see from the menu photo that this set would be healthy, delicious, and generously portioned. I chose chicken as my protein source instead of pork to be added to the clear, umami-tasting beef and dashi broth, along with earthy, nutty shimeiji mushrooms, fried tofu (aburaage), and other tasty ingredients. The in-house-made, room-temperature (not icy chilled) udon sat on a bamboo mat (takesudare) within a larger bowl. Side dishes included a tossed green salad, kinpira gobo, asazuke (lighly pickled vegetables), and a scoop of mixed rice. The broth remained steaming hot even as I dipped the noodles into its bowl. $21 -Shrimp Tempura Udon Set: my husband selected this menu item as he was drawn to "tempura shrimp" or deep-fried shrimp. The battered, deep-fried large shrimp were delicate, crisp, and airy, but my husband regretted not asking to have them served separately, since the bottoms of the airy shrimp tempura, which were touching the broth, got soggy. However, the shrimp meat was tender and succulent. The clear, steaming-hot broth was clean-tasting, not overpoweringly seafood-flavored, and umami-rich, yet didn't detract from the delicate shrimp. Of course, the silky yet chewy in-house-made udon was luxurious when slurped from the bowl of hot broth. His lunch set also included a mini salad, kinpira gobo, asazuke (lightly pickled vegetables), and a scoop of mixed rice. $22.50 We were impressed with Udon Yonpachi and would love to return for their izakaya dishes and sake for dinner.

Nabeyaki Udon + Mini Tendon
Sidney

The whole experience was great from start to finish! We wanted udon and found this great place! We were greeted as soon as we walked in and got a table right away. We tried the chicken skin gyozas which were fantastic and came with the yummiest sauce! For dinner we tried the Katsudon+mini Udon set and then the Nabeyaki Udon + mini tendon. They were AMAZING. The Nabeyaki was seriously something I could eat everyday! We asked for extra fried mochi since we love it. Highly recommend trying this place!

Spicy Niku Kinoko Jiru Tsuke Udon

Udon is the slurps... I've been wanting to give this newbie a visit though giving it some time to settle is nice so the the newness can settle with that I still feel the newness of this place and you can find them right on one of the busiest spot McCully Street can be stressful as the parking is right front of the restaurant getting out can be hard during the busy traffic time. We arrived just at opening in fact was worried about parking and arrive early to grab a stall and found it nice inside with lots of holiday decor along with some Japanese decor which felt quite cluttered giving it more of an izakaya vibe the staff is nice and friendly greeting us and getting us started but seem a little unsure with some of the items. I did get something that I normally don't see is "Spicy Niku Kinoko Jiru Tsuke Udon) ya that's it but it's spicy with beef and mushrooms and tsuke is to dip so my noodles was plain and the sauce had all the goodies in them along with the spicy seasoning right on top...mixing mix mix and dip it was a nice chewy bite like sanuki udon a thick and mochi texture bite as dipping just one noodle at a time was a sufficient bite. Kitchen is fast and efficient and the staff was nice and kept our water coming as this cozy spot was nice and I do love udon so you know I will be back. Thank you!

Goodbye to 2025, this will probably be my last review unless I try something new tomorrow. I don't see any place for reservations so got here before 11am and stood in line like the old fashioned way. Parking is limited and shared between Territorial Savings and another Japanese takeout next door. It seems like dinner time maybe more ideal for parking since Territorial Savings is closed. I got the dipping in Udon with pork/mushroom flavor since that's what this place is known for. I kind of wish it was in soup instead of dipping. Flavor was good though. It was a set lunch with some rice. Not sure why we need more starch when Udon is a starch. But I did like the Gobo, salad, and some Ume flavored pickled veggies. Excellent service and lively vibe. I hope to return and try their regular Udon.

Person was nice who took my order. Take out menu different than inside menu. It seems more expensive since ala carte and no lunch special or set menu. The udon fries was suggested by a friend but I'll pass on that since it was too salty for me. The udon and tempura was tasty but better to eat in the restaurant for better prices.

Finally stopped at Udon Yonpachi for lunch and I'm pretty sure I found my new favorite curry udon on the island. I ordered the curry udon as a lunch set and it was dialed in -- the curry was the perfect consistency (not too thick, not too runny) with a bold, comforting flavor that actually hits. My wife got the Nikujiru tsuke with mushrooms and that was also super good -- rich, savory, and really satisfying. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience feel easy, welcoming & casual. Only heads up: the parking lot is tiny, so plan accordingly. Overall, definitely a repeat spot for me. I'll 100% be back.

The highlight of our Hawaii trip! We loved Ginza Bairin so much that we went TWICE during our trip…read more We visited on our previous trip to Hawaii, and it was an absolute must-revisit this time around. If you're visiting Honolulu and love Japanese tonkatsu, do yourself a favor and put this place on your list! The absolute star of the show is the Specialty Kurobuta Pork Loin Katsu. Out of this world! Kurobuta pork is basically the Waygu of the pork world. This pork comes from the Berkshire pig which produces more flavorful, more tender pork. The pork is perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and coated in a beautifully crispy breading. Every bite is exactly what you want from a great tonkatsu. And PLEASE, don't sleep on the unlimited refills of cabbage, miso soup, and rice! The rice deserves its own shoutout. Ginza Bairin serves premium Tsuyahime white rice from Yamagata, Japan, and it is hands down the best rice I've ever had. The grains are plump, fluffy, and delicious, with that wonderful texture that makes you keep reaching for another bowl. Shamelessly admitting that I ate THREE bowls of rice, and I have absolutely zero regrets. My husband doesn't eat pork or beef, so he ordered the chicken katsu and said it was the best chicken katsu he's ever had. That's a pretty impressive endorsement, especially from someone who eats chicken katsu regularly. Families with little ones, this place is fantastic! They're incredibly kid-friendly, with child-sized cups, forks, spoons, and plates. Even better, the kids' meals come in the cutest little blue or pink car-shaped trays that my son absolutely loved. You can choose chicken katsu or shrimp tempura, served with rice, cabbage salad, macaroni salad, and a kids' juice box. It's thoughtful touches like these that make dining out with a toddler so much more enjoyable. The service was amazing, too. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive, making the whole experience even better. A few helpful tips: - Make a reservation ahead of time if you can, but walk-ins are welcome, too. - There are two "restaurants": the main dining room primarily accommodates reservations, while the other side is mainly for walk-ins. Don't worry, the food is impeccable on both sides! - Free validated parking for up to 1.5 hours is available at the Bank of Hawaii Waikiki Business Center underground garage, which is a huge plus in Waikiki. Ginza Bairin checks all the boxes: exceptional food, premium ingredients, generous refills, warm service, and a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere. The fact that we went twice in one trip says everything. This is one of those restaurants that stays on your must-visit list every time you return to Hawaii. Already dreaming about that pork katsu and another three bowls of rice!

It's a small place, so seating can be limited, and although they do take walk ins, you really should make a reservation. Free validated parking is available next door in the parking garage beneath the Bank of Hawaii building. I really like how light and crispy their tonkatsu is here. And the Kurobota katsu just melts in your mouth! If they don't have that available their Bairin Pork Tenderloin Katsu is always excellent too! My girlfriend also likes their Katsu-Dons. Sets come with free refills of rice, miso soup, cabbage, and pickles. Last night they also had several new wagyu additions to the menu that we haven't seen before, along with a wagyu beef nigiri that we had to try and thoroughly enjoyed. Service here is fast and very friendly! We have always enjoyed coming here and the staff take great care of their customers. They also offer a Kamaaina discount for locals with a Hawaii ID, which is really fantastic for people like us who live here and enjoy this place!

My god Experience: 5/5 I'm calling this experience because they do something different here which is you get to grind your sesame with mortar and pestle to create your sauce which I think is a genius interactive element that not only adds to food knowledge but also makes you present. You are partially eating what you create and I like that immersiveness. Part of what also makes it cool is the open kitchen concept. Being seated in the middle of the bar i was able to watch the chefs' process from start to finish which is always such fun to see. Otherwise the service was really good! Ambiance It was what I would call an elevated casual. Not too loud or feeling like you need to be very quiet. I think the price was fair for what I got and all its fixings but its definitely not cheap. With that being said though I do think its extremely worth it if you can get a seat!

Also there is a 3.5% add on for using a credit card and the prices on the receipt do not reflect the menu prices and after calling them to ask why they basically couldn't explain it. Very strange practice. The menu said that the upcharge to go from a standard to large soba size is $3.75 and the receipt said $7.50. That is quite a difference. The servers are a mixed bag. The younger ones seem more service oriented, or less burned out. I know there are lots of loyal customers, but we haven't found the food taste, quantity and price to be worth it for us. A soba lunch for 2 runs around $75 with tip, credit surcharge and tax. Kind of high for not a spectacular meal.
