An upscale Japanese restaurant that has a fusion element to it. The ambiance was different than expected -- more casual than the sister restaurant Uchi. There's some parking out front but if the lot is full, they do have valet parking as well. The food itself was delicious. The portions were small (think tapas), so you would order several dishes. Our favorite dish was definitely the nabe, which had a mix of mushrooms, short rib, rice, and a soup-y sauce. They have happy hour from 4 to 6:30, so we took advantage of that for some drinks and small plates. Overall, a good experience. read more

A shout out to Gabe our sous chef, server and all around great guy who was taught at CIA in Hyde Park and can make some mean sushi. Just tell him a little bit about yourself, let him order for you and then sit back, relax and get ready for lift off. SIT AT THE COUNTER!!! Working backwards, the Milk and cereal dessert I had was the best dessert anywhere and I mean anywhere that I have had. Whoa. Prep and plating are spot on for all menu items. Just look at the pics. This will take anyone about 10 visits to capture the essence of where Tyson Cole, the visionary behind this place as well as others such as Ichi, etc., is going. The menu blows my mind and will not do it justice with some of my banal comments. Study the menu before you arrive, go for a 5 course so your palate can dance and get smacked around, as you get more delirious and confused about how each course can top the previous one, and final lift off (think Space X as rockets will return) will be Milk and Cereal. The service was Phenomenon I had such a wonderful time I had p38 which was delicious we had to wagyu steak rock I'm sorry that I did not take photos of them because they tasted so good I did take some photos of the desserts that I had which was amazing the server was so great at helping us with recommendations I had to nigori sake which was really really good. Whenever you come here I would expect to Spend iat least $100 per person there's so many really really good items on the menu you could get by without spending less but I would definitely come here with $100 be ready to taste a lot of different types of really really good types of sushi I would definitely recommend getting the hama chili. You MUST try Uchiko if you are in town! When's the best time you ask? Happy hour (which is called Sake Hours here), daily from 5-6:30PM. It's first come first serve, seating at the bar only. You don't need a reservation (actually you can't reserve for the bar ). You can usually seat down right away if you get there before 5:30PM with a party of 4 or fewer. Food is so bomb! My top 3 recommendations: 1) foie gras nigiri (on the regular menu, it's $10 a piece but it's worth it, trust me) 2) shokko makimono - small seaweed roll with yellowtail, cilantro, yuzu kosho. It's so simple, but so delicate and so satisfying. The more you try the more flavor you get. 3) avocado nigiri - avocado, rice, yuzu kosho, and seaweed. Just a few ingredients created such a harmonious combo of taste and texture. The slight cirtrus flavor elevated this to a new level Honestly everything we ordered from the Sake Hour menu was great, and it's hard to find Japanese food of such high quality yet so simple at this price point (especially living in California). If you only have a day in Austin, get some BBQ for lunch, and save your stomach for Uchiko's Sake Hour! Tip: Don't freak out if you get there at 5PM sharp and find the bar packed, most people are just sitting around waiting for their tables and they will get up to give you the seat if they know you are dining at the bar. I normally come to Uchiko for social hour, which happens between 5-630pm. Even though the tastings are smaller portion, I prefer it because it means you get to try more! Get there around 4:45-50 to ensure a table. Only certain areas count for their social hour. Otherwise you may have to wait for bar seating which is first come first serve. I typically get their nigiri here, but I haven't had a really had dish. They're quite well known for their Brussels sprouts I believe, which I order if I'm with someone that's never dined here. Recently though I've found the dish to be quite salty and rich, so much harder to share between just two people. Another dish I'd recommend is their milk n cereal dessert, which I believe is an evolution of their fried milk dessert. It's probably one of my favorite desserts in town! read more

Service is 10/10. I wish i remember our server's name but he was the best, as well as everyone else who came and helped. We were lucky to get a reservation for 5:30 right during happy hour, so we had no problem getting a table. Learned our lesson after having to leave bc the restaurant was full right at 5. Food was phenomenal. Happy hour menu prices were not at all bad for the quality. Everything is in small portions, and mostly in odd numbers, so kind of hard to share plates among 3 people. I enjoyed dinner at Uchiko so much during my first trip to Austin in 2019 that I had to come back again. Our group of four ordered the 5-course omakase as well as some of their signature dishes to share. Their Jasmine Cream with crunchy honey tuile on the bottom, whipped jasmine-flavored cream, cilantro granita and topped with fresh pineapple is one of the most beautiful and refreshing desserts I've ever had. I would have never thought that I would have such a phenomenal sushi dining experience when I initially pulled up to the restaurant but I was surprisingly wrong. I never even looked at the reviews or pictures to get an idea of what to order and didn't even look at the menu. Trust me and just order from this review since this is exactly was I was told to order and you'll thank me later. Order the following and you'll be amazed on how one bite can have so much flavor!!! Nama hotate Hirame Suzuki kurodai sake toro kampachi Kinoko (mushroom sushi - now I'm not a mushroom fan but the person I was with, ordered more) Guyitoto- (beef short rib sushi) - I was intrigued with this initially just based on the description but oh my it's was incredible, it's beef that will melt in your mouth. We ordered three of each which gave each of us one taste and the final piece was eaten by the person who liked it or wanted it the most. From the cold items we ordered the Hama chili And finally dessert we ordered the Jasmine cream and Fried milk. If you have to really have to decide between the two I liked the fried milk better. I eat sushi at least once a week and this is definitely on the top of my list. The food, service and ambiance were all top-notch! Our waiter Marco was very attentive and provided excellent service. I came here with a couple of friends and had a great time! We had a reservation for 8:15pm on Tuesday and were seated promptly. The service was great-- our waitress was very professional, patiently answering our questions and coming back every so often to check in on us. We ordered a couple of drinks and ended up getting two sets of the 10-course chef's selection, which did not disappoint. Our dietary restrictions and preferences were taken into consideration when ordering, so I thought my friend's shrimp allergy would cause our courses to vary, but it didn't really make much of a difference in the end. The fish selection was fresh but the portions were a lot smaller than I expected for that price. My favorite courses of that dinner were the smoked masu toro and 72-hour wagyu shortrib (pictured below). My main gripe with the experience was that the pacing was very inconsistent. Some courses were accompanied by prolonged moments of pause while others came right after the other. It was confusing trying to predict how much time we had between each dish because of this. After three trips to Uchi, I finally made it to Uchiko. I won an Uchi-Uchiko gift card at a travel and dining auction in Kansas (I figured not many people were bidding on a Texas restaurant in Kansas so I fared quite well) and wanted to use it while I still had time in Austin. I booked an early reservation during the sake social hour. Eric R. and I met here since he came from work. His social hour hot sake and Sapporo together were cheaper than my one glass of rose brut, but I was in a celebratory mood! We ordered in various spurts throughout the meal, but I am too lazy to recall those so I am going to just review the items, which were all stellar of course. First, we got the brussels sprouts with fish caramel, which were divine. Eric R. was happy that they were all coated in some of the caramel but yet still had crispy leaves. From the social hour menu, we ordered two shokko and one tomi temaki. The shokko was hamachi-avocado-cilantro-yuzu kosho and the tomi was salmon-preserved lemon-jalapeno-candied garlic. Both were awesome. We also ordered the Scottish salmon nigiri with preserved lemon and skyr yogurt (order of 2) from the social hour menu. What I liked about the size of both the nigiri and the gunkan-maki is that they are truly one-bite in size. Traditionally, sushi is to be eaten in one bite but I have a small mouth (the oral surgeon who removed my wisdom teeth in high school wanted to remove my 12 year molars too...didn't happen), so I usually take two bites to eat nigiri or gunkan. These were perfectly portioned and I appreciate it! We each tried the scallop gunkan with avocado which was scrumptious. I also tried the gyutoro (fatty beef tongue, as if the regular one is not fatty enough)! It melted in my mouth. Eric R. got the ikura on special and I had a piece of the masaba (Japanese mackerel with fresh wasabi). It was quite tasty. We both opted for the nasu nigiri which I said was smoky and Eric R. insisted rather that it was burnt..so not a standout by any means. One of the most wonderful bites for me was the boquerones nigiri (I have a thing for white anchovies). I also loved the madai with shiso and meyer lemon zest. As we neared the end, we shared the tiger cry, a wagyu beef-avocado-pickled veggie-Thai chili concoction wrapped in rice paper a la spring roll (but really, summer roll). It was a nice medley of flavors and had something crunchy inside that provided nice texture. My dessert was Hokkaido uni with fresh wasabi, and Eric R. finished with unagi and kanpachi nigiri. After the gift card, this was by far a steal of a meal with the deal (ok, I won't be a rhyming poet anytime soon) so it was worth my years-long wait to try. I definitely appreciate what Uchiko is doing in the kitchen, and it was a lively place from the moment we walked in until the moment we left. Service was what I would call extraordinarily attentive - our server was patient, answered questions, offered suggestions, and stopped by regularly (she also said y'all a lot so I felt at home). Every other server or busperson that walked by refilled our water glasses and snatched away empty plates with the speed of Flash. My food business owning mother would be pleased with the service. I'd go back but I am certain it will be several years before that happens. My advice to you is to make a reservation during sake social hour (5:00-6:30 PM) which is available throughout the restaurant so you can be seated and partake in discounted fare. The dishes I ate were meticulously crafted and had very fresh ingredients. During my meal, I felt like I could trust that every single dish would be essentially perfect. The waitress I interacted with was also very knowledgable and down to earth. I will definitely be coming back! Specific items I personally loved: - "Foie Gras Nigiri" - My waiter brought this out at the end of the meal and wow, in my opinion this was insanely good. It was perfectly roasted and so indulgent and creamy. - "Ham and Eggs" - This was a katsu pork belly roll. The katsu was crispy and paired well by the espelette pepper in the roll and the yolk custard sauce it came with on the side. It is also very modestly priced :) - "Hamachi Kama" - Buttery roasted hamachi kama with accented toppings and edible flowers taste enhanced this dish beyond what I typically experience. Very good! Side Note: I'd say that the "perfect order" may come with time. They have a varied menu that may take a while to pick out personal favorites from. I think for a two person meal, I'd go for 1-2 sashimi orders, 1-2 hot or cold appetizer, 1-2 rolls, 2-3 specialty nigiris (at 2-3x pieces per order), 1 dessert. Just say "no" if you want to have a conversation and eat in peace. I had sushi with my ex-partner here about four years ago, we sat at the bar, but the sushi was awesome and the bartender was excellent. This time I made a reservation for my friend and me. From the time we sat down until we left, we were constantly engaging the staff unvoluntarily. The waitstaff interrupted us every five minutes during our only hour here, which was astonishingly obnoxious. I couldn't finish a story or even a thought before getting interrupted. I joked this place was "Biden inducing" (cause we couldn't complete sentences without interruption). We had planned to have dinner but getting rushed and the bad, rubbery shrimp appetizer led us to leave and go elsewhere. Yes, this place is trendy, and yes, the ambience is very nice (as is the music selection, which is softly played and not booming). But the arrogance (front bartender excepted) coupled with the absolute impossibility of having a conversation makes this place a no-go anymo. There are too many excellent options in Austin to put up with this "business model." For much less money, you can have the excellent service and un-stuffy attitude of Bartlett's or Salty Sow, for example. read more

Went here for my birthday and I'm so glad I did! Happened to be on a Tuesday and this place was poppin. As soon as my boyfriend and I walked in, we saw seats completely full in the front room, but luckily we go sat at the sushi bar in the back for HH. There selection at this location is a little different than their location on south Lamar but many options for all to enjoy. I love Uchi because I can always count on a solid sushi experience. The fish is fresh, made quickly, and you can tell they car about the quality of food that you're paying for. Our server was kind enough to include a free dish in our meal since it was my birthday! So nice and so thoughtful. Some of my favorites from Uchi and Uchiko is their hamachili (yellowtail) and tempura kabocha squash. I always order these two every time I go! I think this is my go to birthday spot for years to come you can always count on great service and a fairly quick experience eating here. Having eaten at many of the top sushi restaurants in NYC frequently, coupled with the reviews given to Uchiko, we came with high expectations. The flavor of the food was very well done and definitely met with our expectations. What fell short however was the portion sizes. At any of the best sushi restaurants either there or even elsewhere in Austin Metro, three pieces of Uchiko's Nigiri equates to one everywhere else! I loved Uchi in Houston and didn't know Uchiko existed! Uchiko is right by my apartment and I had the chance to try it out with my friends who visited from Houston. I wanted to make reservation but it was already full so we walked in right when the restaurant just opened at 5 and was able to get a table. Uchiko basically has the same menu as Uchi. Of course I ordered my absolute favorite dish - Hot Rock. Yes, the portion is small but it's so entertaining to put meats on the rock and the meats are very juicy and tasteful. All the sushis were amazing as always. Most surprising dish was the dessert. It had some kind of cilantro ice that went really well with the jasmine ice cream. I couldn't stop eating and wished we ordered one more. I would highly recommend to try this dish out. Will definitely be back! read more

And when I say everything, I mean everything from the edamame to the sushi rolls to the karaage to the wagyu was elevated and absolutely delightful. Plus you can't beat a hot towel to clean your fingys. Additionally, our server Holly, was attentive and provided the best service. For dessert we shared the fried milk- which was mind blowingly incredible- and the chocolate cherry dessert. Oh and a little taster of the cheesecake ice cream with carrot cake on top!
