Neighborhood Sushi is incredibly special to us, it's where I took my now fiancé on our first date and where we celebrated her most recent birthday. It couldn't have been a better choice either time. The yellowfin tartare is exceptionally fresh and beautifully balanced, the brown butter scallop is rich and perfectly tender (the surprise star of the show), and the fatty salmon just melts in your mouth. Honestly, it's hard to single anything out because literally everything on the menu is spot on. The quality across the board is exceptional, with pristine fish and thoughtful preparation that shows real respect for the craft. Quality is consistently outstanding, the service is warm and attentive, and as a traditional sushi restaurant, it truly stands out in an omakase saturated market. The flavor was okay but I wasn't a big fan of it because their claws made it a bit difficult to eat. My friend enjoyed it though. Their nigiri was okay. Rice a bit more on the vinegary side. The fish pieces could've been a bit more generous. I really loved their hand rolls though! Perfectly flavored and had delicious garnishes, although the seaweed could've been a bit crispier. I remember this place being so much better in the past. Not a lot of selections when it comes to rolls. I was hoping to get the chirashi, but I was told it isn't offered on the weekend. A fun sushi speakeasy with fun vibes! I heard you can't enter in through the street, you have to enter through the unlabeled door in the back. The majority of the seating is either at booths or at the sushi bar. The lighting and vibes inside are quite nice - not pretentious, but still elevated. It took a while for our server to take our order after the first time she checked in with us, but the food came out surprisingly fast. I came to neighborhood sushi for the first time with a couple friends and was so impressed! The restaurant was really cute and clean and I really appreciated the layout of the tables, even when busy it didn't feel as if people were on top of one another. I loved the hot towels to start, and our server Jason was amazing! He was super knowledgeable and fun, he kept checking in and making light conversation with us! He had great suggestions for vegetarian options for my friends, his favorite nigiri order as well as dessert! There was a large selection of drinks, including N/A options. The grilled edamame were some of the best I've had! I got a special salmon roll with grilled pineapple and it was perfectly balanced and so tasty. Some items like the tempura were good but the Hamachi collar at $24 felt totally overpriced and dry, and the 3 rolls we tried were very average, think all you can eat quality level, not $20 per roll level. The sushi is great quality, but you can definitely find similar for a more affordable price. We ended up ordering more after we placed our first order because we were still hungry. It is smaller portions and pretty expensive. This place is more about the ambiance overall and I thought the service was good. I'd go back for drinks and some apps but probably not full dinner. My ratings of my dishes are below. Baja bass yakitori - 10/10, great cook on this and the black garlic soy sauce was the perfect glaze. We also loved the side of pickled shishito and tomato. Yellowtail belly nigiri - 7/10, good not great but just because of my personal preference not the quality. I prefer just regular yellowtail Eggplant nigiri - 10/10, this was so simple and yet surprisingly flavorful and we wished we had gotten more King salmon nigiri - 10/10, great quality fish Salmon avocado hand roll - 6/10, too much going on with this couldn't really taste the quality of the fish Snow crab hand roll - 10/10, so good! Crab was perfect in this Spicy tuna roll - 9/10, good spice and fresh roll. Very cool spot. Perfect for date night as it's very dark and intimate. It reminded me of a speakeasy. Forewarning: they are SERIOUS about the dim lighting. An employee (very politely) told me that they do not allow extra lighting equipment (such as a selfie light), so I did not get the most aesthetic picture of my sushi. If you like to document your food, this is definitely something to keep in mind! The food was super solid. The edamame had an amazing flavor. I dipped my sushi in the juice and it was amazing. Absolutely amazing. Each piece of nigiri was a 10/10 and Neighborhood has some of the best hand rolls in Austin. We really can't even choose a favorite. The sake-based cocktails were bomb. My favorite was the Drunken Angel and I think it's the best cocktail I've ever had, and I'm not usually the biggest fan of sake. The best egg drop soup I've ever had. Umami explosion. I had the snowcrab and scallop hand rolls, which were mouth blowingly sensational bites tucked into 2" seaweed squares. There are elevated bench booths, tables, and seats at the bar. The bar has a solid high wall so you don't really interact with the chefs as you would at a typical sushi bar seat. The entrance is tucked in the back through the parking lot on W Annie and not on South Congress. The high wall on South Congress hides about three tables; ideal for groups. This has become one of my top sushi spots in Austin! You enter through the parking lot back entry with a hidden door. A speakeasy vibe with an interior that is vibey and lively. Cozy booths, dim lighting, counter seating, moderate noise levels since everyone is having a great time. People in Austin swear by Neighborhood Sushi and say that it is their favorite sushi spot, and for good reason. The quality here is one you can really taste. Fresh cuts of fish and delicious innovative bites. Service is good and the servers are all knowledgeable. Rundown of everything I ordered: - Fatty Tuna Nigiri ($17pp): The fatty tuna just melts in your mouth. The sushi rice is firm and subtly tangy. - BBQ Eel Nigiri ($5pp): This one to me was standard, it tasted like unagi nigiri. - Yellowtail Scallion Roll ($18): Each roll comes with 8 pieces. The roll was very well balanced between fish and rice. There are crunchy slices of jalapeno adding a freshness to the roll. - Wagyu Roll ($33): By far, my favorite bite of the night! The wagyu was wonderful with the spicy teriyaki sauce. No it's not spicy, more sweet and savory. - Sweet Corn Nigiri ($5pp): I would pass on this one. It was just corn and rice. Yes, it was beautifully presented, but taste wise nothing too special. - King Crab Nigiri ($13pp): Another melt in your mouth, buttery bite. Overall, neighborhood sushi has a great ambiance for date nights, a nicer sushi dinner spot, or even hanging out with friends. The food is amazing with good quality. One of my absolute favorite spots in Austin! This swanky little gem off South Congress feels like you've been transported to a hidden sushi speakeasy just steps from the main drag. You slip in through an unmarked back door off the parking lot and find yourself in a cool, romantic, dimly lit space. There's sushi counter seating, cozy booths, a private room for larger parties, and an outdoor area. The outdoor seating is a neat experience -- fully enclosed by shrubs for privacy -- but as someone tall with long legs, I found the tables a bit low and the heat noticeable even with fans running. I recommend making a reservation and arriving early, since the parking lot is small (though street parking is usually available nearby). Service here is always quick, and the food and drinks are consistently excellent. My go-to cocktail is the Drunken Angel -- like a sake piña colada -- creamy, dessert-like, and absolutely delicious. I also love the Asahi Super Dry beer, which a server once recommended instead of my usual Sapporo, and it's been a favorite ever since. The menu is phenomenal -- you really can't go wrong. The specials are always worth trying; on our last visit we had a bright, citrusy crudo that was incredible. Some of our staples are the snow crab roll, spicy salmon roll, and yellowtail scallion roll. And of course, you have to start with the miso soup and edamame -- simple but perfect. I'd recommend getting a reservation and not try the wait and see game. Miso soup was some of the best i've ever had, flavor was so so good. Egg drop was just okay, good texture but a little lacking in flavor. Grilled edamame was also pretty yum. I thought the nigiri and sashimi was very solid, some of the best i've had. Amazing fish quality and such good attention to detail with different and balanced flavor profiles. Very top tier. We got the snow crab and spicy tuna rolls. Both were fine, but i thought they were a bit overly creamy and soft. Fish wasn't really the star of the show for either, more just like biting into a creamy mixture which wasn't my favorite. Dessert was sensational and makes this 5 stars almost by itself. The miso butterscotch tart was phenomenal, the flavors and textures of the banana crisp and chocolate clusters really elevated this dessert. The kiwi sorbet deserves its own paragraph. Possibly the best sorbet i've ever tasted. Creamy, tart, sweet, fresh, bright, amazing texture, just unbelievable. It is home made with fresh kiwis and you can tell, there's even the little kiwi seeds still in the sorbet. I'll be thinking about this for a long time. Great experience overall, probably a 4/4.5 star for me until the dessert showed up and i'm not even the biggest sweets person. He gave us a couple of recommendations and this is what we went with: - tuna & shishito roll (10/10!!) this roll was a perfect combo of chewy/creamy with a slight spice kick. it's only on the specialty menu but i'm hoping it sticks around longer - Amberjack crudo (8.5/10) super refreshing & light - fluke roll (6/10) felt like it didnt have a lot of fish and could mainly taste the sweet potato - cuttlefish nigiri (10/10) the nigiri here is so fresh and well crafted from the sushi rice to the cuts of fish. the cuttlefish has a crunchier texture to it- similar to squid which was fun to eat. - salmon avocado crunch hand roll (8/10) this is great if you tend to like more rich/creamy combos but can be a bit overwhelming if that's not ur fave flavor profile. For certain, one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin, TX and comparable to any sushi I have had anywhere. We came early afternoon and it was pretty quiet. Although the restaurant faces the main street, the entrance is around the back and can be easily missed. Once inside, we were seated right away. They have booths, tables and a sizeable sushi bar. Never having been here before, I wanted to try a few things different than my traditional sushi orders at other places. We started off with Miso soup and the Neighborhood salad. The soup was good but it's kind of hard to make bad miso soup. The salad was okay... there are better ginger dressings. As an appetizer, we had the Miso glazed Sweet Potato Yaki. It is good and I do recommend. I just don't know what makes this a Japanese dish. To check the quality of the fish we had Yellowtail and Fatty Tuna Nigiri. The fish is incredible and you would have a hard time finder fresher fish. To finish, we had the Salmon Avocado Crunch hand rolls. I know we are in Austin where they seemed to make everything look like a taco... this place is no different. They even served them in what looked like taco serving platters. I did a Google search for a "tuna hand roll" and after looking at hundreds of photos... I never saw a single one that looked anything like theirs. So, before people start their attacks, when I read "hand roll" on the menu, I had a certain expectation and this was not it. The ingredients are good... but I did not want to eat something that is going to fall apart like a taco. And if I wanted a taco, I would have gone somewhere and ordered a taco. I wish I could have at least had the option; the server could have asked if we wanted it as a traditional hand roll. And before you tell me it's the chef's creation.... the chef is not paying me to eat this. I am paying, so yes, I do have certain expectations. There is another popular sushi restaurant down the street that is not nearly as good when talking about fish quality. But we do know of some other sushi spots in Austin that have equally as good fish and about half the price and more traditional. Gluten free was possible for almost every dish besides tempura. The daily specials were the best items we ate. They were very stuffed and served on taco like platters which made it difficult when eating to not have lots of stuffing fall. I came here on a date and had such a lovely time!! This place had been on my radar a while and my date had never been either so we opted for it. Of note, although it's right on Congress Ave around a lot of other restaurants, the Congress Ave door is the "back door" and it's closed - you enter from around the back where the little parking lot is (which also is almost always totally full - so be careful with parking; a lot of the street parking is either pay to park or blocked off to residents only). The ambiance inside is low light, modern and lovely. I like the design of the sushi prep area at the center of the bar with some surrounding tables. We were seated at the bar area; the table area is a bit narrow but because they bring out sushi in courses you don't run out of table space. We ordered the Kyoto matcha IPA ($10; VERY interesting beer - you do taste the matcha in it!), the amberjack crudo ($23), BBQ eel nigiri ($10), scallop sashimi ($18), fatty salmon sashimi ($21) and the chutoro special sashimi ($30). Including tax etc, our total was $121.23 and what I will mention first and foremost is that despite the fact the food was delicious, I do think it runs expensive. Both my date and I were not very hungry at all incidentally, and after we shared these few sushi pieces, we were both just barely "comfortable," not even quite full. So be mindful that if you come here to really eat and get full when you have an appetite it will cost you a pretty penny! As mentioned though - the quality of the sushi is quite high, and I loved the flavors! The eel and the salmon were my favorites - absolutely not gripes there! Our server was also very attentive and SO nice, he really took the time to explain recs on the menu and answer all our questions.
