MOLD DAMAGE! NEVER USE!! This review for ABF U-PACK moving and storage is because we lost close to everything due to extensive mold damage in the unit that ABF U-Pack supplied and their unwillingness to help remedy the situation. We moved from Los Angeles to Chicago back and had our belongings stored on the flatbed truck provided by ABF U-Pack. Our furniture was wrapped in cloth and plastic, mattresses put in plastic mattress bags, and everything packed according to the suggestions of ABF U-Pack. We also checked in with ABF U-Pack on a monthly basis as well as after a large storm here in Chicago to ensure that our belongings were okay and were told that everything was fine. You are also not able to access your unit while it is in storage or else we would have checked ourselves. When we went to unload the storage unit onto the moving truck it was a moldy disaster. There was a hole that leaked in the unit. All of our furniture was destroyed. When we went to file the claim, the site was down so we called the 800 number and spoke with Mark. He was not even remotely empathetic and was very unhelpful. It is devastating to have this happen in general. Then, it's frustrating that the site won't let us file the claim, and even worse that the coverage your company offers is only .10 on the pound. By our calculations, the damage will exceed $8000 and our coverage could only pay us $400-$500. I was trying to find out if there is anything else we can do to recoup something somewhat close to the actual value. Regardless of that outcome, I feel that good customer service would have been to say something like "Wow, I am so sorry this happened, let me try and help you." Mark just kept going on and on about how they aren't obligated to do anything further and that there was no way I would ever receive anything beyond .10 on the pound so I just should not bother. He also pointed out that if I dispute what they offer once the claim is processed, I won't get ANYTHING until the dispute is settled which means I either have to give in to what your company offers at some point or another, or I get zero. He couldn't even remember my name, on a day that I just found out that we lost close to everything. I am extremely disappointed, angry and upset with ABF U-Pack. II feel that they do the bare minimum for customer service and nothing more and are not customer oriented at all I would never use again. read more

U-pack's over all concept was just what I was looking for moving cross country. Cheap and effective. My belongings got to my destination on time and in good condition. The truck drivers were nice and helpful but U-pack's customer service was so bad I almost went with a different company that cost way more. Natalie was the first agent I spoke with when choosing a moving company for the first time. She was short, impatient, and uncooperative when I asked questions about the moving process. I called back as a second attempt for help and got Eric. He was warm and helpful, exactly what i needed from a customer service rep during such a stressful experience, so i decided to book with U-pack. Unfortubeatly, Eric was not always available. When we arrived at our destination I called customer service again for assistance regarding the drop of process. I spoke with Travis. He was also not helpful answering my questions in yes or no answers. When I asked for more information since this was my first time with U-pack his answers were very sarcastic, not at all friendly. Trying to get answers that were useful was like pulling teeth. Overall, the physical move and service was good quality. They charge by space used so I actually spent less than my initial quote, but the call center customer service was bad. For me, having 18 days to pack up and move across country on my own was very stressful, it would have really made the difference if the service reps had the decency to at least be polite and do their job with pride. If you use u-pack, dont settle for the rep you get at their call center. Keep calling until you find someone who is helpful and kind to you. I recommend Eric. Very pleased with my ABF Upack experience. We just moved from downtown Chicago (River North) to southern Texas. After pricing Uhaul, Penske, Ryder, Budget, PODS and a couple of full service movers, we decided to go with ABF for a few reasons: a friend had a very positive experience with ABF; ABF was cheaper than all other options when I factored in the cost of fuel; and we had free airfare on Southwest airlines so it was much more convenient for my wife, cat and I to fly instead of drive a truck for about 24 hours. We were originally going to do a door to door move. Since we were moving from downtown Chicago, where parking can be very limited, ABF told us we'd have to do a "live load", which means we would have 2 hours to load the truck while an ABF driver stayed with the truck, and if we needed additional time it would cost $37.50 for each additional 15 minutes. In my experience moves always take longer than planned, so we opted for a terminal to door move. This was roughly $300 cheaper. I considered renting a Uhaul to take my stuff from downtown to the terminal, which is near Midway airport. I decided instead to hire a local mover to do that, which turned out quite well. Movetastic was the local mover. They sent a 3 man crew and a truck to move my stuff from my downtown condo to the ABF trailer at the terminal. I helped with loading, but it was really nice to have their excellent 3 person crew do a majority of the work. I highly recommend Movetastic. The ABF trailer was delivered to my driveway in TX in 4 business days. Everything we had loaded was still intact and in good shape. I've moved about 6 times in my life and this was the best overall experience. Thanks ABF and Movetastic! read more

I used ABF U-Pack for my move from Chicago to Miami in March. I was really satisfied with their customer service and ability to help you sign-up for their services, but that was when the satisfaction ended. Coordinating with the destination terminal was stressful and required a number of calls to confirm that the cubes would arrive on time. Conveniently, if you reschedule the move on them they charge you but if they are delayed this is not a priority- so make sure that your schedule is flexible around your move date. Fortunately, the shipment was "early" and therefor my delivery arrived on time. But it was clear upon arrival that one of my two containers had been mishandled during transit, particularly when we opened the container and the boxes and furniture were spilling out. I had a number of nicks and scrapes on wrapped furniture and boxes that were smashed in. My desk and TV were completely busted. So I submitted a claim form with pictures and explanation. The claim was completely denied because I didn't "pack the cube well enough". Again these were wrapped up which was indicated in the pictures. I was very disappointed that their customer service couldn't be as helpful after you paid for their services. This is definitely a buyer beware company and I would highly recommend finding another solution that will accept responsibility for their services. They definitely have a good price, but for an out of state move you will be paying several thousand dollars, so this is still a high value service. I hope that you have a better experience that I did or use a better company. read more

I filled my Relo-Cube at the Chicago terminal yesterday and they were wonderful. Each time I called the terminal with a question they were so accomodating and great. Ray, the terminal manager, could not be nicer. Leonard was there when I arrived (late around 8pm) and he was very helpful and funny. I had hired movers to help me load my cube and that made it go really well. The pod was clean, secure and everything fit! Now I can track my cube as it travels to San Francisco! read more

You might save some money with this company, but your stuff will take a beating. I used ABF on an interstate move from the west coast to to Chicago. The scheduling process was fine, I got a good deal on two Relocubes. Their booking people are great. The delivery and pickup of the cubes went smoothly. I had them packed professionally and the guys I hired could not have done a better job of packing everything tightly so it wouldn't slide around. When it arrived in Chicago, there were many pieces of furniture damaged. Every single item that had wheels on it--carts, TV stands--had their wheels broken off. I suggest removing the wheels on anything you have with wheels and then reattaching them, or at least ensure that no furniture with wheels has anything placed on top of it that could put pressure on it in transit. Fortunately, I don't have many very valuable pieces of furniture, and the things that were damaged were all either old or things I didn't care much about. But if you've got expensive stuff that you feel precious about, you might not want to use a service like ABF. I don't know how they transport this stuff, but it must be very rough. It seems they blame the way you pack, but that was not the problem in my case. The other things is that unless you can get door-to-door delivery of the cubes, you may not be saving that much money over a standard moving company. For some reason they can't or won't deliver to your house in Chicago, so you have to go get your stuff from one of their terminals miles outside the city near one of the airports. If you have to hire another moving company to do that, it makes it considerably more expensive. And if you have an issue arise where you can't come empty your cubes out right away, they charge you out the wazoo for storage fees. All in all, I'm not sure I'd use ABF again. They are very professional and do what they say they will do. My cubes arrived at their destination when expected, no problems. If saving a few hundred bucks is more important to you than getting your belongings transported in perfect condition, you can't go wrong. But if I had antiques or anything precious, I'd be nervous. read more

These folks are the way to go for 21st century moving. They were nicely priced to begin with, but then they also offered me either 1 or 2 cubes--you pay for what you use only. The people on the phone and also at the ABF Upack depot were SUPER NICE. Moving is stressful but these guys made it painless. And by the way: nothing broke on the way from Chicago to California. Rose used relocube for an earlier move and it was fine. However, the relocube we got this time was not waterproof and it was delivered at the destination with a great deal of dirty ground water inside it. Renters insurance didn't cover it because it was groundwater flooding. ABF instructed us to claim $37. The damage: 379 for a new mattress, ~$200 to get a rug cleaned, $??? for all the books destroyed. Even if we had paid for additional insurance from relocube, they would only have paid $3 a lb for destroyed items. BTW, they admitted that all storage is outside. They also showed absolutely no remorse at the situation. So think again if you are moving in the Midwest during thunderstorm season. read more

I highly recommend U-Pack. If you are even thinking about using their services, please do it. I did a Relo Cube and it was absolutely perfect. I called a few times with questions and concerns and the staff was very knowledgable, polite, and helpful. I was able to put so many boxes and pieces of large furniture in the cube. I was pretty worried about things possibly breaking during the drive from Chicago to Orlando. I have never sent my belongings away before in a big truck that far. There were glass dishes, 2 flatscreen tvs, 4 leaning mirrors, glass console tables, and many fragile items in my boxes. When the Relo Cube arrived, I was so happy to see that not one thing was broken. Also, the prices are reasonable. Most importantly, the entire process was easy and efficient. My cube arrived way ahead of the estimated delivery window, and the cube was picked up the very next day. So easy, so satisfied. read more

ABF was supposed to make delivery before January 1, 2010. It subcontracted the delivery to a regional shipper. The shipper came within a few miles of the place of delivery and a customer was closed so it turned around and didn't make the delivery to me. Its dispatcher would not allow the delivery even after I said I would wait after work hours. Now, since the local subcontracting freight company took off Friday, December 31, 2010, ABF tells me I will get the shipment sometime next week when I had originally been told by ABF that it would arrive Wednesday of this week. The vendor to me has been advised of the problem with ABF and may take action. In the meantime, I called ABF about the delivery problem and it did absolutely nothing to assist me. It put blame on the subcontractor and did nothing to assure delivery this week. Buyers beware!!!! read more

Absolutely hands down smooth service every step of the way. Customer reps always available, no waiting time, and everyone was extremely helpful. This was our first time using this service, we used separate movers to unload our stuff into ABF freights at the Chicago terminal it was then shipped to our destination ABF terminal in Boston. Make sure you pack tightly and wrap your items in blankets and shrink wrap, things can rustle during the move. Our belongings shipped from Chicago to Boston in 2 days instead of the estimated four days. U-pack is the only way to go for our next move!!! read more

I used U-Pack to ship one pod from Chicago to Seattle (self-pack). The guys dropping off/picking up the pods on both ends were incredibly nice and courteous (and punctual). They were able to get the pod up our super-narrow and steep driveway in Seattle. They have a service where the delivery driver will wait while you unload and then take the pod so you don't need a street permit -- first hour free (and we were done in ~20m). Booking and communication throughout the process was very easy, everything was delivered picked on time, and no surprise charges. They were cheaper than most every quote I received too. They estimated 6-8 business days for delivery and it was there within 5 days. I used another pod service when I first moved a few years back (Atlas' now defunct service), with loading assistance, and it was nowhere near as smooth as this experience. read more

I had used this company in the past for a move from Austin to Philly and had a great experience, so we decided to go with them again for our move from Philly to Chicago. This was a bad choice. It seems that customer service and experience vary from city to city. We got two relocubes for our things and received them on-time in Philly (for an extra fee) without problems, but after we left Philly, it was nothing but incredibly stressful. Although we spoke with multiple people about the delivery window, it took an entire week to get our cubes instead of the promised 2-day delivery window. After multiple dialogues with supervisors, I was told that this week timeframe was "on-time," and that they would not compensate me for any of the $1200 I spent to get it to Chicago a week earlier. Awful and stressful experience. I would never recommend them to anyone who has valuable Items and that needs their things moved within a specific timeframe. They made my move so much more stressful than necessary. Wish I would've rented a UHaul! read more

We had u pack from Kalamazoo , Michigan, to Arizona. They sent our items to a loading dock 100 miles away from our home. We had to rent a u haul and pick up our stuff, which was put in the corner of the yard, we had to ask for a ramp. They said they could not drop off in our local city or area. Be careful, they do not fufill their promise door to door. What an awful experience. read more

Moved from Indiana to Montana and these people were as cheap as U-Haul and we did not have to drive. The staff on both ends were friendly, helpful and professional. We packed (pay by the feet used in the truck) and were within 3 inches of what they estimated. This did result in a small additional charge but we were told this up front. The truck arrived two days before we did at the destination and they held the load with no additional cost. They thoroughly explained the process from the first person we talked to while making the reservation through the entire drop off and pick up process. I would highly recommend this company if you are making a move and want it to be affordable and hassle-free. read more

We used two ABF relocubes (loading at the South Side freight center) to move from Chicago to St. Louis. The price we received was very good and everyone at the loading facility was nice and helpful. The relocubes were delayed by one business day in Chicago and arrived a day later in Saint Louis. At St. Louis, the ABF driver showed very early in the morning and did a great job in placing the two relocubes behind our new building. We were done unloading very quickly and asked the local ABF dispatcher to call back the truck the same day, which he did not do, and, as a result, the relocubes were picked on the following business day. Overall--we would definitely use ABF again; however, if you live in Chicago - make sure that you have enough parking space for the huge 40-foot truck, as well as that you can load everything in two hours (if the trailer / relocubes arrive at your residential address). For most residential addresses in Chicago - you can only do a "live load" for 2 hours with the driver waiting, due to parking restrictions. In addition, expect some delays in the delivery time (a day or two), which might cause inconvenience. read more

Well, I was very disappointed. I will NEVER USE ABF freight again!! They doubled my rate after I had two qoutes from them. I provided the weight and size of a roto rooter and got the qoute, twice. I called them and they told me it had to be strapped to a pallet. I call the seller and he said he would accomadated me. Then he took it to their dock and then had them call me. I gave them the quote number. They wouldn't let me pay for it over the phone with credit card. Ok, I said. They shipped and I had agreed to travel 50 miles one way to get it off the dock to save on the cost. Well the pallet seems to have increase the weight 25 lbs over what I told them and the pallet increased the size from 36" to 48" also. When I got to the dock the price went from $209 to $412!! $200 increase for the pallet that they requested. Then they only took off $20 for bringing it to the dock and $20 for me driving 50 miles to pick it up at the dock. I give them a flat F!
