I work from home so I am always looking for a place to get out of the house to be around other people. My priorities are as follows so take my review with a grain of salt. 1.) Nice spacious table tops and comfortable chairs 2.) Reasonably fast internet (3Mbs min) 3.) Good Coffee 4.) Food The food is great. Love the soup and sandwiches. The coffee is fair. The tables are awesome for spreading you stuff out to get things done. However, The internet speeds are unbelievably slow. Less than 0.5 Mbps slow. You can ask them to reboot their router but that never helps. This place could be the place for me and others like me to hang out in the mornings get coffee, breakfast, while getting work done but the only thing keeping me and others from going there is internet speed. I tried the other location in Linden Hills by they had the exact same issue. Tables and chairs were perfect but the internet connection was unreliable. I do enjoy taking my family to turtle bread for lunch on the weekends and the food is great. read more

FOOD POISONING! Turtlebread was a place I would visit once per month for the last 3 years. I loved it and visited without hesitation, until last month. I met a friend for breakfast and ordered the salmon benedict. Long story short, 10 hours after breakfast I started being sick and over the next 4 days, I lost about 15 pounds. So be it, it sucked, but it was when I called the owner to inform him of my misfortune, that things made me really sick. When I called, I told him what had happened...that I had ordered his salmon benedict and became violently ill. At first he apologized and asked my name. I told him. Then, he asked me what I had eaten for dinner the night before. "The lawyers are going to ask you this when we go to litigation." He said. I shook my head. I told him I was not a litigious person and that I was only informing him of me getting sick, and that I wanted to let him know, so that others wouldn't get sick. I re-iterated that suing him wasn't worth my time nor was I interested in doing so. He then informed me of the three types of food poisoning I may have gotten. He seemed to be very knowledgeable. Almost too knowledgeable. We agreed that I most likely had salmonella poisoning. "What's your address?" he asked. "Why do you need my address?" i responded. "So that I can send you a full report of where all the ingredients come from. Your lawyers are going to want to have something like this." I finally said "Dude, you don't get it. I am not going to sue you. I just want you to fix the problem so some kid or elderly person doesn't die from you uncooked salmon. What don'y you get about this?" He then became very rude, and short, and hung up without saying goodbye. So, long story short...if this guy knew so much about the legal proceedings for food poisoning, and was so well versed in the types of food poisoning...I don't think I am the first person to get sick here...nor will I be the last. As I read a lot of the service complaints about Turtle Bread, I can tell you that the owner is modeling the teenagers' behaviors in my humble opinion. read more

I woke up early excited for breakfast at a new place with a friend. We typically go to The Hot Plate, Butter, Our Kitchen or GiGi's so we thought we would add another spot to the list. I was underwhelmed by my eggs, sausage and potato breakfast. I was also surprised that the coffee mugs were only 4 oz. If you are like me, I gotta have my coffee and lots of it so making lots of trips for a re-fill wasn't convenient, I realize this comment makes me lazy but hey, it's Sunday morning! But at least I was getting my steps in. My potatoes were cold and under seasoned, I got the heel of the baguette which was stale. I didn't even finish my plate. On the bright side, I did get a almond croissant which was delicious. I will go back for the pastries but not for breakfast. read more

Love the open space. We come here often for breakfast. Used to live in the neighborhood, moved away and still drive across the cities for their delicious pancakes, eggs and bacon! Love that the breakfast meals come with an option of a salad. Very casual and great for family. read more

Go for the bread, forget the rest. This isn't a coffee shop - their coffee is nothing special. This isn't a proper restaurant, either - their food is good, but not spectacular. If you're looking for either of those, there are many better options around the city. What Turtle Bread really is at it's heart is a bakery, and they are fantastic at it. I have never been disappointed with any of their baked goods, and I've been going there fairly regularly for the past two years. If you're going there to eat an actual meal, you won't be thrilled by the food, but you won't be disappointed either. I recommend the soups (particularly the potato and ham), which come with some of their wonderful crusty bread on the side. I'm also a fan of their omelets, but those are not quite as consistent in quality. read more

Turtle bread should be a lot better than what it is. Sometimes it's great other times not so good and their variety is lacking. All and all its a good place to have lunch and the location is great. The staff are usually unfriendly and off putting for whatever reason. Baked goods have a homemade taste to them and are very good, since I live in the neighborhood I frequently eat at turtle bread but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there. read more

The person at the counter, 2 different waiters, said the same thing when I complained: "Well, mam, you have to plan ahead, call in the morning and we'll put something aside." I want so much to like this place; it's in the neighborhood, it's bright and open, it's a bakery. But every time I go in, it ends up being a bad experience. Today, I pick up a loaf of bread from the stack clearly labeled "cardamom bread," take it to the counter and say " I have a loaf of cardamom bread and this almond croissant," only to get home and find it's a loaf of whole wheat bread. Last time, it was lunch, a good soup and a side of slimy, clearly spoiled salad mix. It's just demoralizing. Patisserie 46 is just a few blocks farther away and so, so much better. read more

Ordered "chicken tortilla soup" expecting something thick and flavored with garlic, cumin, and perhaps cayenne. Received a thin, bland tomato broth with pieces of chicken and onion. When asked, counter clerk replied that Turtle's tortilla soup recipe doesn't involve tortillas or spices. read more

I love Turtle. They're just a short walk up the street from our house, and we love walking up for breakfast. I dont even like pancakes, but I find myself waking up the morning craving their buttermilk pancakes and the chicken apple sausage (don't know where they get it, but it's amazing). I find myself buying the bags of cookies and eating half of them by the time I get home. I didn't love their coffee roast at first but I now find that it is growing on me too. This is one of the main reasons i love living where I do. The ham and cheese sandwich and biga salad are great for lunch, too. read more

I really, really want to like this place. Cute, neighborhood-y, lots of character. And if I close my eyes, i do love the food. But the cleanliness and friendliness are practically non-existent. I brought a friend there recently and she out-and-out refused to eat there. Seeing it through fresh eyes, there was clearly a lack of detail and focus on CLEAN. The coolers are dirty, the window sills are dusty, the tables stay unbussed, the baked goods just sort of hang out there for all to brush up against and sneeze on. This review is about the Edina location (there doesn't seem to be a Yelp page for that). The prices are absolutely pretentious (the most expensive croissant and danish I've ever seen in the cities) and are not at all justified. The chocolate croissant is boring, nothing to rave home about. Before I asked them to please re-warm them, it was just a piece of cardboard with rock-hard chocolate inside. The danish was humongous (as was the price - both are totally uncalled for, in my humble opinion). The berries on top were the ugliest, saddest, more withered and unappetizing berries I've ever seen. The part of the dough with the berries on was so soggy, that it actually fell away from the outer circle of crust on my first bite. Very, very sad and disappointing. For the first time in my life, the egg wash on these items reeked horribly, so much so that it made it hard to eat them. Both items also tasted as though they were a day old, on a Sunday morning at 10 am. What a disappointment. I mean, if you know anything about fresh croissants, if you've ever made bread, or if you've had these delicacies enough times, you KNOW when they're fresh, and when they are not. Sadly, these were not. Also, all the croissants are displayed (with no labels nearby, so that it's near impossible to find what you want) on a cart in the middle of the shop. It's all self-serve, and extremely confusing unless you go for something that looks obvious (like a chocolate croissant). Seriously? Anybody could have touched my croissant with their hands? Blah. Oh, and don't forget your $8.99 box of tea to take home! What is it, gold? Come on people. The frilly, pretty decor of the place certainly does fool a lot of people, but I am going back to the unbeatable Bread and Chocolate for my croissants. read more

I can't exactly put my finger on it...but every time I go to Turtle Bread Co. there is just a little something missing and a few great things that keep me coming back. Which, for this brunch, meant a killer glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and the mushroom frittata (with a side salad). Both were delicious, but I wish that they would have cut the mushrooms into smaller bites (there were basically entire mushrooms cooked into eggs...just a lot to chew)-however the flavor was great. My dining partner ordered up the Benedict, which was also very good and came with a side of roasted potatoes. Only downside was that the bread that hosted the egg and sauce goodness was super thick...so again, you had to chew through a ton of stuff to get to the flavor. Overall a decent brekky. read more

My first time and I was so impressed! My girlfriend who lives in area recommended it to me and wow, was she right. The ambiance is open, airy, casual and just the place you would want to go for a quick lunch or a first date. They have many ceiling fans on inside so it is cool and feels refreshing. There are also many outdoor tables available through allow you to enjoy the funky fresh vibe of south Mpls in this tucked away neighborhood. I found that my eyes were bigger than my belly when I walked in and saw the long table filled with homemade bread, pastries,cakes, and all sorts of other tasty baked goods. I ended up walking out with several loaves and cookies than I came looking for. To be clear I came in to eat lunch but left with some of the most delicious bread ever! I ordered a bowl of chicken and mushroom soup which didn't have a heavy creamy base and was filled with large chunky mushrooms and big pieces of meat. Not to mention it comes with a piece of their tasty baguette, nice and flaky crust yet soft and fluffy on the inside. After that I ordered a spicy chicken avocado wrap that is served in a spinach tortilla. The wrap wasn't rolled very tight and was a little annoying because it kept falling apart, however, I was impressed that the chicken was cut in large juicy pieces and the wrap had pepperoncinni subside of it! Yum yum! So tasty! Next time I'll just remember to ask for extra napkins! A local favorite and a must go to on a hot summers day! read more

They need to post allergen info on their deli case! I've never been thrilled with the place, but it is convenient to other businesses I frequent. I have a serious dairy allergy and ordered a beet salad which included no dairy on its tag, and just said it had "red wine dressing." I asked the counter person if it had any dairy and she said no, but when I got home to eat it, it seemed obvious that it had dairy in the dressing. So I called back to confirm, and was told it did have dairy. I realize everyone is sick of hearing about other people's food intolerances, but if I had eaten that salad I'd be facing 10+ hours of vomiting. Never, ever going back. I'm totally stunned that this place gets "liked by vegans" on its page here- it has almost nothing without dairy, and its vegan cupcakes (which I have tried twice) are so disgusting even my 17-year-old won't touch them, and he usually loves vegan cupcakes. read more

Fantastic (but expensive) breads and muffins, lemonade, pies. Mexican brownies that are amazing. Consistently crappy service, but it's in my neighborhood and I could hardly live without them. Also has 2 restaurants attched, one that serrves wood fire pizza that's pretty good. Sort of a local verison of Dean and Delucas, but not quite as exciting.
