This is a cute local coffee shop. They have street parking and plenty of tables. I wish they had more reading chairs (only 2 in the corner). I also wish they had more gluten free options. This is a spot that lives their values! There's no tipping, they pay all of their employees a liveable wage. They source their products from within Minnesota. They recycle, they compost, they offer reusable mugs for on the go. I also loved that they sell Minnesota-specific products and have a little alcove with children's books and toys. If I were a local, I would be here all the time. Because not only do they live their values, have a very cool vibe, and have very kind staff, they also have great food! I shared a biscuit with a friend which was warm, crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside. It came with a choice of jam. We went with strawberry rhubarb which was equally delicious. I also ordered a turkey sandwich (they had already sold out of the quiche by the time I'd arrived!) there were real chunks of turkey breast meat, the most beautiful tomato, a lovely aioli, all on a warm and comforting piece of ciabatta. I come here for the Magic Cookie Bars. No kidding... those yummy 7 layer bars with coconut, chocolate & butterscotch chips, nuts (maybe), sweetened condensed milk on a graham cracker & butter crust. Yum! Plenty of chocolate chips for you connoisseurs! They also have abundant coffee options and a kitchen with breakfast/lunch food. Everything I have ordered has been good, fresh and tasty. I usually come after lunch for coffee & a treat. Late in the day you will find many of their bakery items are sold out. They are THAT good!! They have puppy treat options for purchase I noticed. This place has a no tipping policy--they pay a living wage to employees. In the summer there is a lot of outdoor seating. I have been coming here, on occasion, for over 5 years and the service has always been good. You'll find little tables, benches up to a long, beautiful, natural wood bar which faces out the window & larger tables around the side... also, kid toys along the wall. Two unisex bathrooms, free refills on coffee. I see a sign saying "Live Music" which I didn't know about. Soft music plays while you enjoy your cuppa/soda, treats, or typing away on your laptop (free WiFi), or meet friends, grab a few neighborhood papers or other important free magazines, take a look at all the different services offered on a community wall, concerts coming up or events of interest. Great light, extensive menu, I liked their mission and values...Cool spot all around. The food was good. I thought it might have been a bit better. The French toast I got for my daughter, which I fully planned on finishing off was unappealing and I can't put my finger on what it was about the taste that just wasn't great. Three stars is a-okay in my book. I like the homey, friendly vibe of Butter Bakery Cafe and that it has a few labeled vegan options. The tofu scramble ($11) is vegan by default and really good---the tofu is dense, chewy and beautifully seared with spices. It comes with homemade bread which tasted great. I just wish this dish had vegan bacon or a vegan breakfast sausage and it would have been perfect. The tofu burrito ($12) is also vegan by default, but less interesting. The interior consists of blandly-seasoned chunks of tofu and potatoes while the exterior is covered in chili. The dish doesn't really come together. I liked my hot chocolate ($3.75) made with Oatly, but the pumpkin maple spice latte ($3.75) was too sweet (sadly, they use Pacifica almond barista blend, which my partner likes, but I hate). Unfortunately, Butter Bakery still has zero vegan baked goods (they get close with one item, though it contains honey, which is not vegan). This little cafe was near my Airbnb when I was staying in Minneapolis for the first time. It came recommended. In the morning after buying a toothbrush to substitute for the one I forgot my first thought was coffee. I saw the menu on the door when I walked by and thought I could have some pretty good coffee and a bite to eat. I got a mug of coffee (refills are free which is nice) and a simple biscuit sandwich on one of their "award-winning" biscuits. I had a slight case of sticker shock when I got my total. For just egg and cheese on a biscuit I don't expect to pay as much as I did, but the biscuit lived up to the hype. It was really, really good. I could tell that the egg and cheese were quality ingredients also. The sandwich and coffee I had at 9 AM ended up keeping me pretty full well into the day also, to the point that I wasn't really hungry at lunchtime. This trip was intended to be a lot more food-centric than it was just due to my inexplicably reduced appetite most of the time I was there, so some of this is just me. It was nice just to sit at a little cafe and people-watch for awhile while charging my phone and drinking my coffee. What a find! I haven't heard of this neighborhood-based, family-run cafe until recently, and I'm happy that I came here! I called and reserved a table and there isn't a time limit. There are many food, drink and bakery items to choose from. They have Gluten Free options available for anyone who needs it. I got the Birdie Bar from the bakery shelf and the first bite was delicious. I can see why they call it a birdie bar! There's a mixture of seeds from pumpkin to flax to sunflower with some sweet cranberries! I also got an Oat Milk Latte. It came with a pretty design and was creamy and warm. I tried an Iced Tea mixed with Black Tea and a Hibiscus blend. It's tart and sweet. I love the staff. They make sure you are accommodated and have what you need. They know their menu and give great recommendations if you have any dietary restrictions. I found them thoughtful and friendly! Butter bakery is a place I've been frequenting for the past 10 years--for many reasons. The scones are always a massive draw. They're substantial; constantly rotating with fresh flavors (often featuring locally produced ingredients), and pair perfectly with tea. The breakfast menu is amazing with fresh, local ingredients supporting local farmers. The portions are very generous (check out the burrito!). I love the homemade coffee syrups and highly recommend pairing hazelnut with oat milk in a latte. This is a community that loves to support the community. One step into Butter and you'll see local art, initiatives to support BIPOC and LGBTQ communities, and so much more. Also, the owner Dan is a gem. He has a newsletter and is always so personable. I love everything this local cafe stands for, I just can't decide if I loved my experience here... Pros: 1. Locally owned 2. Food is made from scratch 3. Fair Wage model (no tips) 4. Our food took a long time to come - a staff member apologized and went to check on it without us asking about it, but I'm glad we weren't in a hurry. 2. This is a weird complaint, but I had the Mexican-style scramble and Adam H. had the omelette, and both of us had a hard time keeping our food on the small plates. Very small and quaint cafe on a busy street. It's easy to miss it unless you're looking out for it. This cafe is small but packs a big punch for coffee and bakery items. A little disappointed they're not allergy friendly. Like I said the space is small, so on a busy day, don't expect to have any space to sit inside or get your items quickly. I love what this place stands for, and honestly had no idea that was their vibe when I picked it from all the coffee places surrounding my Airbnb. Walking in, it has the feeling of a co-op from Seattle, which I really enjoyed. Things went down from there though. After waiting behind two people ordering for 10 minutes, I still couldn't figure out where their food menus were. Do people just magically know what they want to order? No, the menus are on the wall at the END of the line. Though it might be the beginning of the line because the place is set up so you can't tell. I just figured it would be next to the case of pastries and next to the door. By the time I got to order, I still had no idea what I wanted and let another person go ahead. Wanting something simple and light, I picked out a grilled biscuit with "hope" butter (seemed local?) and jam...and coffee of course. Mugs of coffee for here are one-size but the cashier insisted I pick a size. Ok. Then the coffee showed up at a bar on the other side of the restaurant..but I wasn't told, so I had to get up and ask. Food was an even more frustrating situation. The biscuit was a nice size..just warm, not grilled or even toasted. The "hope" butter was two cold slices of stick butter (I honestly expected something whipped and or easy to spread). And no jam. When I asked the waiter for jam, he looked confused and flustered, then disappeared and came back with a small spoonful of jam in a plastic to go cup (I'm eating in!) when I have two giant slices of biscuits in front of me. I went up and asked for more and they said that's their serving, but reluctantly gave me one more spoonful. See photo for my attempt at spreading cold butter and the initial serving of jam. There's a pleasant, community type atmosphere about Butter Bakery Café. It's located on the corner of 37th and Nicollet Ave which makes it easy to spot. You walk in and order at the counter after spending time drooling over the baked goods or debating intensely over various choices on the menu. Breakfast is available all day, so if you're a "breakfast for dinner" person, this is your place. It's the only place I can remember that randomly sells kimchi underneath the bakery items in the cooler. As a Korean person, I think that's pretty nifty. I've been fortunate enough to be brunching a lot lately. I continued the trend and ordered some breakfast food. I split an order of sausage patties, in addition to ordering two eggs and a side; that being pancakes. The sausage was quite flavorful and memorable. The seasonings complimented the meat well. I opted for multigrain pancakes and found them to have a fair amount of fluff to the overall texture. They were delightful. Everything was pretty good overall. The coffee here was better than other places that I've been recently. Having the option between roast types is always nice. There's a lot of self service elements to this restaurant. Sometimes I like that about places because there's less potential for awkward interactions. Plus, there's something slightly satisfying about busing your own table. I often find that I hate this place. A good friend recommended I try the beet-carrot vegi burger, knowing my love of meat. I sunk my teeth into this mockery of burger patty, and was infuriated by how much I enjoyed the sucker. It was both flavorful and filling, obviously not beef, but not trying to pretend to be so. Where was this deliciousness when I was a vegetarian?! Dang Butter, I needed you sooner! I have not ventured much further on the food-side of the menu. Outside of the beet-carrot vegi burger, I've only had the eggs and pancakes, which were good. The baked goods however, are the real stars of this place. Not once have I had a less than stellar baked morsel, and believe me I tried! I began ordering baked goods I normally distaste outside of Butter, but here Butter has doctored it up in a way that I thoroughly enjoy. You will not go wrong with any of the baked goods. I am not a coffee drinker, though I do hear people rave of their coffee, espresso and the like. The tea I can say is quite splendid, and with the free hot water refills for the teapot, incredibly cost effective. But their signature Hot Chocolate... It can be 114 degrees Fahrenheit (like it was this summer) and I will still order and guzzle down that tasty goodness. For those that prefer something a bit more cold and refreshing, try their [seasonal] lemonades. Further, the staff hear are all attentive and friendly, cheery and helpful, thorough and thoughtful... simply the best people around. The business stands for locally sourced products, along with fair wages, and it abides by its convictions. As a result, though the prices are slightly higher than I prefer, are still well worth it. Typically I have had very good experiences at Butter, but Online ordering via ChowNow has appeared to be a challenge - at least it was today. I had ordered a hamburger with specific modifications ; upon arrival for pickup I was told they were out of hamburger and asked if I wanted to switch to turkey burger. I said sure and then when I got home with my order discovered they gave me the turkey burger as it appeared on the menu... I had to drive back to the restaurant and ask for them to re-fire the order and make it as I ordered it with turkey instead of beef. First, I should have been contacted about the missing item instead of waiting until I arrived. Second, the miscommunication about how the sub would work seems strange. Additionally, I had ordered a quesadilla w/ meat and when I got home there wasn't any meat in the quesadilla. I give four stars because of my normal experiences at Butter, but I will likely not order online from here anymore. Which likely means as long as we are still in a pandemic and mostly eating at home I will not be ordering from Butter. read more

There's an alright interior, they also like to sell merchandise, with a good amount of seating inside and some outside. The staff seems nice, the menu has a nice selection of items. I ordered an omelette with pancakes. The omelette itself was alright, and the pancakes were actually good (soft, fluffy) and tasted yummy with the syrup. The downside of this was an almost 20 minute wait for this, and it wasn't even that crowded on a snowy day, and the staff didn't seem to care about that fact when it was dropped off. The pricing structure for their food (specifically the vegetarian breakfast burrito) is frustratingly high. The breakfast burrito ended up being north of $15 due to the addition of a meat of my choice (sausage). It was low on flavor. $15 for just a burrito? I know tips are included in their price, but shit! I'll just eat 6-7 Taco Bell breakfast burritos next time and they'll taste far better and fill me up. Coffee was also expensive and nothing amazing...certainly not Five Watt level. Free refills were a bonus, but I found myself wanting to bounce after eating my overpriced burrito. When I went (on a Sunday afternoon) it was quiet in the best way. Butter could be a good place to study for a bit; I was able to get quite a bit of drawing done and didn't need headphones to concentrate. The eclair had a great filling, and my latte was good. Warm up my scone (which they probably would have done if I would have just asked) and this place will be a 5 next time! The menu is great, but I went for the bakery at this visit. We enjoyed a cinnamon roll--nice and gooey in the middle, kind of crunchy on the outside--perfect and a great spice! Also went savory with the cheddar bacon scone. It was delicious, with just the right amount of crunch on the outside to meet the soft savory cheesy inside. The coffee here is always delicious--not bitter like I find many coffee establishments. It's an order at the counter and they bring you your food place, so grab a table and enjoy the bright space. I have also enjoyed on past visits "lunch food"--my favorite being the unusual beet-carrot burger. Curious? You just have to go and give it a try! Lots of crunchy sprouts and a perfect bun. Butter is so much more than a cafe, it is a community space and industry leader for sustainability and ethical workplace issues. To Josh F's point about the pricing -- they are one of a few places in town that are no-tip, meaning the tip is built in to the menu price (as it should be), so that employees have less variability in their wages. Also, Butter has voluntarily provided paid sick time to employees for a while now. This has only recently become a city ordinance in Minneapolis, and most places are choosing to add on a 3% surcharge so as to keep the price *looking* the same, but in actuality you're paying just as much if not more as you would with Butter. Beyond ethical policies, Butter has some of the best chai in town! Their baked goods are amazing. I would highly recommend stopping in to Butter to see to what extent a cafe can have a positive impact on the community. read more

After last night's foodie love fest, I slept until noon to recover. We're having a very late breakfast here. We were surprised to find out that this is a coffeehouse establishment and not a restaurant, as portrayed online. I ordered a cheese omelet with lots of fresh veggies and a small side of potatoes, which I shared with my husband. The omelette was good. However, it was full of big chunks of vegetables that should have been chopped into smaller pieces before putting them in the omelette. The coffee was good but not very hot.
