Service is great, the folks behind the counter are generally pretty friendly. The parking is hit or miss right in front on the street or in the adjacent parking lot but you can usually find a spot on the same block. Love that there's so much variety and the breads and pastries are mostly self serve. I'd get there in the morning for the best and most fresh options. The cookies are huge and delicious. Today I ordered food for the first time as I had heard great things but I was thoroughly disappointed by my breakfast sandwiches. We ordered egg, cheese, and one with bacon and one with ham. It looked more like a grilled cheese with 2 slices of very thin bacon and the other with a small slice of ham. The egg was also very small and flat, hardly filling up half of the sandwich. I wish I had just made my own at home instead especially considering I paid $30; definitely not worth that. The highlight were the potatoes. I don't recommend this sandwich and likely won't be ordering food from this location again. I'll stick to the breads and treats. read more

Have been buying breads and cookies here for years. Recently bought a bag of cookies that were hard and stale 2 days after purchase. No problem. Just return and exchange for a fresh bag. Manager said no. "These were purchased on Sunday" I said only two days ago. They always last much longer. Would not exchange but offered a bag at 50% off. Gave her everything back and said I won't shop here again. Lost a lifetime customer over $6.00. Maybe a beginners course in customer service would have been useful to her. read more

Cute! No pressure coffee house with large flat top tables that allow for big groups or plenty of space for board games, crafting, reading or even computer work. There are even some outside patio tables when the weather is nice. Ordering is done at the front counter cafeteria style and then food is brought out to tables based on numbers. There is always fresh baked bread, pastries, cookies and bars that are delicious whether eaten in house or taken to go. Personally, I enjoy any of the house soups, quiches, coffee drinks and juices such as apple or orange but today I tried my first spicy chicken wrap and it was good! There is a larger breakfast menu including omelettes and plenty of sandwich choices as well. Sides typically include the option of salad, fries, sweet potato fries or chips. Usually I try to shop local when I visit here as there are many cute local businesses in the area of Chicago and 46th along with Lake Nokomis. Enjoy!! read more

I love this local chain. I usually get a piece of quiche. This one I had at home goat cheese and red pepper. Heats up with a great crust perfectly. They have the best soups, but I passed on this sweltering day. Always served with a huge French roll. I love the iced tea and the separate condiment area. My absolute favorite that I get to go is the house triple chocolate cake. Lots of staff and they always clear the tubs of dishes in a timely manner. The reason I don't eat my cake here is that I love to get organic ice cream next door. This place has one of my favorite vibes and I always drive through the park on the way home. read more

Just bought what must be the world's most flavorless hummus at the Chicago Ave location. Couldn't taste tahini or lemon or olive oil or garlic, just garbanzo beans. At a steep price, I might add. I have been to Turtle breads one other time and was wowed, but this is a different location and several months later so I wasn't sure what to expect. In a word: WOWED! I was excited to try their New England clam chowder, but at 1PM the hostess thought threes might not be enough for a full cup. She she spooned out what was left in the steam table container and then ALSO gave me a second cup of another soup for free. I've not experience that kind of generosity from a restaurant hostess for quite a while. But then I was a bit nervous that the bottom of the barrel soup would be .... yucky(?) or too old. It was not! The open environment of Turtle Bread makes it a unique place to grab some food. With numerous types of pastries and breads being made in the restaurant, the space is exciting and comforting to hang out in. There are rows of baked goods lined up near the counter, where you are also able to order food. They have breakfast and lunch menus that have a decent variety of offerings. I'm definitely a fan of the grilled cheese, but I recently tried the margherita sandwich. The bread was toasty and housed the mozzarella, basil and tomato with a frill pick for support. I was a bit disappointed that the cheese was cold and not melted, but perhaps that was intentional. I didn't ask. It was still good, and made even better with some Sriracha. The fries were excellent. Totally worth the $1 upgrade cost. In terms of other food items here, the soups are generally good and baked goods that I've tried were also tasty. I'm not sure exactly why this place has a low-ish rating overall, but it's worth a try if you haven't been here before. read more

I like this place. I really do. Their food is fantastic and the atmosphere is fun, especially with an open baking area. Their bread and desserts are so yummy! So why only four stars? First, their internet is so unreliable that is frustrates anyone who comes here to work. When it does work it's fantastic. When it doesn't, the employees are ambivalent and shrug their shoulders, not really sure how to help. My advice: get better internet. Second... Their employees can sometimes appear rude. A good number of them are cheerful and helpful while some still look like they'd rather be doing something else... smile smile smile! it can help! Give it a try! My experience today was very disappointing and disheartening. My husband and I decided to have breakfast here to celebrate some milestones in our life. We left rather upset and hurt. Before we arrived for breakfast my husband wanted to get his coffee from a near by coffee shop. I also got two loafs of their gluten free bread from this coffee shop called Sovereign Grounds. We then walked across the street to Turtle Bread and company for breakfast. My items were in a paper bag and my husband had his coffee in hand. We then placed our order at Turtle Bread and explaind that the items in hand were not purchased here. When the cashier rung us up the total seemed a bit high for what was ordered. I then asked her right away if this was for the omelette and potatoes that i ordered and she responded yes. We went to sit down and it didnt sit right with me or my husband. We flagged down another waitress and explained our confusion. She was very understanding and did notice that our items were not from here. She want back to the cashier that rung us up to get our refund. The frustrating part in this situation is why did our cashier ring us up for items in a paper bag (mind you )that she never saw??! How did she come up with almost 15$ extra for items in a paper bag that she never saw?! My second frustration is why lie about it when she was asked if this charge was just for the omelette and potatoes. I asked for a receipt and it only showed the total. We are still baffled as to how she charged for items she assumed were from this location. It made my husband and i feel as if she were assuming we stole these items! I'm still so upset by this! When the other cashier came by to apologize and to explain to go to the counter for a refund she asked if the other cashier who rung us up came by to apologize and she never did! We did get our money back but i find it very difficult to return knowing that this could happen again. I'll take my breakfast without the racial profiling please. read more

I moved next door over a year ago- and was SO excited to be living next door to a well known coffee shop in mpls. I have stopped in about five separate times , and each time my boyfriend and I have been very let down. The first time I tried this place out, no one behind the counter could tell me what kind of chocolate they use. I was looking for dark chocolate in my coffee drink, and literally none of the 3 staff members knew if it was dark/milk chocolate. Each time I have came back and tried to give it another shot- disappointed. Absolutely will NOT accommodate a vegan diet. As staff has no idea what is vegan and what is not- had to tell them no eggs, milk etc. And again, each time i've gone in, i've asked if anything can be made vegan or if any item in the place is vegan- and the response is always a hard no. The iced coffee has always been diluted, and tasting like water with a hint of muddled coffee- and I kept going back hoping it was just a bad batch- but it's consistently bad. I managed a coffee shop for 3 years, and I'm not sure how they're making it, but i'd save your money and opt for caribou down the road like I do. As it being 2019, and the location where it is, i'd expect at least a couple items- bagels, treats , breakfast hash, tofu scramble to be vegan and available. I would for sure be frequenting on the weekend AM. I like the atmosphere as there are always a ton of dogs- and happy social customers. The layout is cool and rustic. Sadly, would rather drive the five minutes to caribou, rather than walk the 40 seconds down the road. I believe a little training and education behind the counter and some new menu items would do good. read more

I'll be honest, I just don't get why people love this place so much. The decor is boring - huge wooden tables, wooden floors, long counter containing pastries. Nope, it's not the atmosphere. Every pastry I've tried here - from the Mexican brownie to the pumpkin bars - are always way too dry, feel like they've been sitting out too long, and always taste like they're missing something. The soup - I had one decent soup here which was a carrot ginger soup. It was bland, but it wasn't terrible. I've sampled many of their other soups, and I can honestly say that there's nothing memorable going on here, either. (And after reading Aaron H's review about the soup getting re-served, it's sufficient to say I will NEVER eat soup from this place again.) Sandwiches? Nope. I had a salmon sandwich of some kind, and the fish smelled SO fishy that I barely wanted to eat it at all. Fish shouldn't smell THAT fishy. Not if it's stored correctly. So nope, it's not the food either that keeps folks so excited about this place. At least not me. Service - anyone who reads my reviews will see that I always give a star for service. I'm a chipper guy, and honestly, most of the time if you're nice to your server, they're really nice back to you. No matter how hard I've tried, I've never had consistently good service here. Sometimes it's okay. Sometimes its abysmal. So nope, it's not good service, either. And I'm sorry, but the prices? Seriously? I've had better food for less at Panera Bread, and that is not really a compliment for Panera. Where to begin. This is the first bad review I've ever felt the need to post. There wasn't a redeeming moment during our Saturday afternoon lunch expedition. The moment we walked in I noticed how dirty the dining area was. Old plates left on tables (they were never bussed away in the 30 mins we spent here), and our table had syrup stuck all over it. The floors had napkins and food strewn about them. The "bussing area" had plates and garbage everywhere to the point the cans were overflowing. When we got in line to order, we asked what was in several entrees (sesame chicken wrap for example). None of the employees were able to tell us, and one of them simply pushed a plastic menu holder my way. I politely pointed out this option wasn't listed in the menu she provided. She didn't provide a response. It was incredibly busy so I panicked and ordered a grilled ham and cheese and salad. Wish I had that moment back. My girlfriend ordered the spicy chicken wrap and fries. The spicy chicken wrap was flavorless, save for a few bites or red onion. The spinach tortilla was crunchy which we found very odd. I grabbed one of the wrap sections and was able to break off pieces. Whether the spice was to come from, I'm still wondering. It was bland as it gets, and the chicken tasted like it came from a can. The French fries were cold, soggy, and not fully cooked. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's terrible French fries. These were top 5 bad I've tried. The grilled ham and cheese was soggy, from the dressing on the salad they applied so liberally I wondered if salad could float. The salad itself had wilted pieces that looked (and tasted) to be expired. We ended up leaving about 1/2 to 3/4 of our meals. Perhaps the bakery is the saving grace here, but you may not be able to pay me to return for its lunch fare. I can get bad food and attitude at a lot cleaner places. read more

Some good things, but definitely room for improvement. First of all, the service - at least in the summer months, this place is staffed by primarily disaffected, bored-looking young (college or high school age) men. They couldn't care less about what you order and really take their time bussing tables. It is typical to see dirty plates everywhere and 2-3 of them just chatting, checking their phones, or aimlessly loitering by the counter. The food is solid - but the prices are steep considering how basic it is. Why is a grilled cheese $9? Why is a breakfast sandwich $9.99? Basically nothing on the menu is under $8, even vegetarian dishes. So my strategy is to only get things that are actually worth that price point. Like the salmon & spinach eggs Benedict for $10.25. I don't mind paying that much for smoked salmon, herbed hollandaise, and a side of salad or potatoes. But $9.99 for egg/bacon/cheese on toast? B*tch, please. Basically, a manager needs to reevaluate the pricing structure because everything on both the lunch and breakfast menus pretty much costs the same ($10ish) and some of it is wildly overpriced. Yes, the people behind you in line will give you passive aggressive looks, but they're going to do the same thing. If you have a small child with you, add on more bread for just 25 cents per huge hunk. That's a deal. My kid liked the bread better than the cupcake which is weird, but the bread is really that good and the pastries are just fine. I feel like if they took the food up just a notch, TBC could be a destination spot, but really it is just a true neighborhood gem.
