It's hard to even begin to put into words the experience that I had at Tullibee. We did the chefs choice and had an amazing experience. The plates were endless (10 different plates!) and each one was better than the next. I am unfortunately from out of town, but will think about the food and experience for the rest of my life. The service was fantastic, our primary waitress was great, always being thorough in her explanation of each dish, truly taking into account our preferences we gave. The support staff was excellent- neither of our glasses even came close to empty and our dishes did not pile up. My family decided to eat out for Thanksgiving this year. Since two of the six of us are vegetarians, we looked for a restaurant that had a vegetarian option. The pre fixe menu had two choices: Traditional menu and a vegan menu. Our visit started off with an issue with the table where we sat. The tables are on wheels, and one of the wheels was broken. Staff attempted to fix the table, but it was to no avail. They were great about it and finally moved us to a new table. We placed drink orders, and they took longer than usual. We were in no real rush, so we didn't think too much of it. As soon as our drinks arrived, we ordered our food. It took over an hour for us to get our food, and frankly it was all a bit of a mess. The main server for our table was great, but it really felt like no one knew what was going on with the dinners. Someone who was not serving staff brought some of the food to the table. The traditional dishes arrived except the rolls. When my sister asked about the rolls, the staff person (not our actual server) said, "Oh you want rolls? I'll get you some rolls if you want them." The vegan menu was a bit disappointing with the offerings in terms of a lack of a real protein such as tofu, legumes, beans, etc. My husband and I received our roasted butternut squash on a plate, one of the rolls from that menu, and a plate with roasted carrots and mushrooms. I knew that there was more on the menu. I asked the woman who was assisting our server about it. I said, "We did not get all of our food." She asked me what was missing, and I said I knew that we did not have the potatoes. I also thought there was also supposed to be mushroom gravy, a rice dish, and a roasted vegetable dish. She actually told me that my squash was the roasted vegetables, and we had gotten everything. I asked to see the menu again. She brought it over and let me look for a minute. I had only pointed out the roasted vegetables when she took the menu back. I asked her if I could see it again, and she told me no. She was going to ask the kitchen about it. I said, I know that we were supposed to be served more than mushrooms, carrots, and a half of a small butternut squash. We did end up getting the potatoes and a very small portion of the roasted vegetables and green beans that were not even on the vegan menu. Everything was cold. We never got the second caraway roll, and frankly I wasn't going to bother asking for it at that point. Those who had the traditional menu said that all of their food was cold as well. The squash was not completely roasted and a bit challenging to eat as most of it was hard. The carrots were undercooked as were the green beans. Toward the end of the meal, the house manager apologized for the mix ups and said it was due to the table swap. I can see how that could impact things, but do believe that it could have been remedied in a better fashion. The star of the meal was the pumpkin sorbet that I had. That was amazing. We did not have any alcohol, and our share of the bill was $188. I do not mind paying surcharges or preset tips. I just want to get what I have paid for. I didn't really want to write a review, but it is not right for management to not know about our experience. No one seemed to know what they were serving. When we first sat down, we asked if we could choose dishes from either menu. The server emphatically told us that everything was premade, pre portioned, and ready to serve. I respect that on a day like Thanksgiving, but absolutely no one seemed to know what dishes went with which menu. We stayed overnight at the Hewing for our wedding and absolutely loved the ambience and service. The connected restaurant was a natural choice for brunch the next morning. While prices were a bit high, that's to be expected for this type of craft restaurant. The cute seating, blend of metal, wood, cement, and exposed brick is such a nice way to set the stage. We started with black coffee and I was very pleased that it was flavorful, smooth bodied, and hot. The only trouble we had with our entire experience was that our waitress didn't return to fill our coffee, even after asking another staff member for more. It was a big disappointment because the coffee was excellent and I expected more from them in terms of service. My mimosa was bubbly and bright, the perfect complement to my meal. I love that they have a small menu that has something for everyone. My husband got the pancakes, which were huge and fluffy. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it was anything but basic. The farm-to-table food (which is locally sourced) was prepared creatively and plated appetizingly to enjoy. I had the house specialty old fashioned, the squash lasagna, and the apple bun for dessert. The ice block in the cocktail caught my attention as I raised the glass to my lips. Nice! You've gotta see it for yourself. The Old Fashioned was bourbon/rye perfection in a glass. The squash lasagna was sweet and delicate and not quite a MamaMia lasagna. The apple bun could have used a dash of cardamom (imho) alongside the cinnamon. Just sayin'. In town for a wedding this weekend. Pre-wedding reception was on the roof top so we went downstairs to Tullibee for dinner. It was a relatively set menu and I have a nut allergy so i told our server about the nut allergy and avoided eating the salad because it hands almonds on it. My meal comes and the side was broccoli and there was a walnut crumble on it. The menu did not communicate that to me. I ate the broccoli with my bison filet and immediately knew something was wrong. I removed myself from the table and went to puke in my room. Thankfully I was about to keep a benadryl down and that started making me feel better. Could've been a LOT worse, usually I end up in the hospital. I hope the management makes changes to its menu and communicates everything that is on the food moving forward. read more

Wonderful brunch spot! Locals suggested this place when we were in town visiting this fall, and all four of us were very happy with our experience. We walked from our downtown Embassy Suites hotel (a bit of a walk, especially on a cold morning, but we did okay). Service is on the slow side, but that was okay with us as we were playing catch-up and happy for a leisurely brunch. Food is crazy good! I went to Tullibee with a friend for a Saturday morning brunch. I was excited to check it out as I have only heard great things about the restaurant. However, I was slightly disappointed with my experience. The space was very nice and definitely had a Scandinavian and chic feel. The tables were nicely spaced and it was not overly loud, so I could still hear my friend talking. It was disappointing at first due to the espresso machine being broken, as I love trying out different lattes and cappuccinos around the cities. Instead, I ordered a normal coffee which was basically the same price as the latte (somewhat odd). The coffee came out in a large glass cup with a to-go cup sleeve around it. We were not given any refills on our coffees. Definitely not what I would expect from a place of this caliber. For food, I ordered the breakfast sandwich which had I believe onions, sausage, egg, and cheese. This was around $13. The breakfast sandwich was a good size, but did not come with any sides. It was pretty tasty but not sure if it was worth the $13. Overall the service was pretty good - but probably wouldn't make a large effort to come back again soon. read more

We came here for our wedding anniversary brunch and let me just say the staff pleasantly surprised us with the cutest happy anniversary card and the food was just so delicious. We even got complimentary bubbly champagne after our meal. My husband had the breakfast Sammie and I had the omelet with the white fish so yummy. We also shared the monkey bread with caramel. As someone not staying at the Hewing Hotel but a local of the Twin Cities trying to find a good meal the day before Christmas with my family, I have too many good things to say about this place! Our server was full of knowledge discussing the locally sourced ingredients inspired by the Scandinavian wood fire cuisine and the rustic decor and incredible food made this a very cozy and welcoming meal. Pictures will now be shown for everything I'm about to describe. Old fashions were fantastic and have a unique logo etched in the large ice cube, the international drink was incredible with a Swedish fish hanging off the glass. For appetizers, the squash soup with duck was like starting off with a dessert, sweet and savory. Beet salad was very toothsome with fantastic presentation. The lefse pork sausage was light and tasty along with the braised rabbit and the duck confit wild rice croquettes. For entrees, shared the dry aged flat iron steak ribeye, Wild acres duck breast, and snapper, which did NOT disappoint and the wood fire gave a nice texture and taste to the food. This was accompanied with the side dishes which I cannot rave more about, highly recommend the smoked carrots with honey lavender and the Gouda potatoes Somehow still had enough room to get dessert which was very tasty with the dark chocolate tart displayed incredibly along with their take of the ice cream sundae and the hugge milk punch. This spot was a bit disappointing. The lunch menu selection is sparse. A couple of soups, five sandwiches, two salads--Bibb lettuce and Roasted beets, three desserts. I ended up ordering the roasted beets with some additional chicken for protein although I was really craving a nice kale salad there was nothing like that. They bought the chicken out on a side plate--it wasn't integrated into the roasted beet dish in any way so it was really kind of odd. I didn't really just want a piece of chicken on a plate so I didn't eat that. The environment is really pretty much in the Hewing hotel lobby and it is nice, modern. You feel like you are eating in the hotel lobby. The server was polite and professional. I was happy that she brewed me some green tea which she iced for me with my lunch which was super nice and appreciated. The food preparation/ aesthetic was fine, nothing exceptional. The dishes taste was fine, nothing exceptional. The restaurant at a 12:30 p.m. lunch on an August Wednesday was very vacant--there were only diners at about two other tables in addition to ours. My friend couldn't find parking with all of the construction in the area so she valet parked and it cost her $16 for a one hour lunch. Would I recommend? Will I repeat purchase? I would eat there again if someone I was dining with wanted to go there but I wouldn't seek it out. There are lots of much better places within a one to three block walk of this location and I would go there first. I would not recommend someone go there unless they were in the area--although Moose and Sadie's, for example, is much better food, much better service and much less expensive. read more

We stayed at the Hewing Hotel for a night, so we had multiple opportunities to check out Tullibee. First things first, the entire decor, ambiance, and vibe are spot on. Gorgeous high ceilings, natural light, and fabulous decor make you want to cozy in and stay for another cocktail. Our first visit to Tullibee was just to the bar. We wanted to grab a drink and app before we had dinner elsewhere. My husband got the old fashioned and was impressed. A picky cocktail man, he noted that it was a good, standard old fashioned that had no frills - just the good stuff. I opted for the non-alcoholic pomegranate and honey cocktail and enjoyed it. It was made with real pomegranate, so it had a sour bite to it, but was delicious and refreshing. For our snack, we got an order of the duck fat fries and wowza! They might be the best fries I've ever had. Served with malted mayo and ketchup, you can tell these fries are hand cut and made to order. The mayo dipping sauce was unique and tangy and I loved every last fry. We also came to Tullibee for breakfast. My husband and I both ordered the brisket hash, except I opted to have my eggs scrambled, instead of the sunny side up eggs it normally comes with. I'm glad I did, because his eggs were so soft, that the whites were runny. The dish was good, served with a fresno chili ketchup and a side of toast. I started with the grilled white asparagus/pickled garlic scapes and gribiche which was best described by Jesse as a loose egg salad. Followed by wood-fired trout/artichokes/nettles/giganté beans and a side of grilled broccolini for good measure. Chef Bradley Day's craft is simply honest with no frills or gimmicks, simple yet complex in flavors and techniques. I'm so sorry. I did not connect with this establishment nor did the other three I came with. I think it may have been the day...we all wanted to try a "new" adventure for a Saturday lunch. We found it just a bit challenging to actually find and finally connected the dots that it was in a hotel that did not have a street number outside that we could easily see and the restaurant displays a very small sign on the outside of the hotel- the valet guys were the best part of our encounter with plenty of parking info.. but even once I entered the hotel I still wasn't sure were in the hotel to find a hostess stand for the restaurant- a bit of attitude and not a real warm welcome from anyone pointing me in the right direction once inside the door. Went to the hostess stand and they did not have record of my open table reservation but that may have been my fault.. from then on it was still difficult to get the others from my party to my "hidden" table and then to get service was another thing... we finally unfortunately left before we received our beverages from our waitress..,everything seemed a bit of a struggle to get her attention or any suggestions about the menu... Oh, Tullibee. I want to like you. You look amazing with your charming brick interior and plenty of natural light coming through a multitude of windows. You try to source locally and you have cute woolen sleeves on your coffee tumblers with a local woolen mill label. Your service is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. But you fell down on flavor, and that is a cardinal sin. I got the brisket hash. Nice texture with two sunnyside up eggs and Scandinavian rye bread with grains (a nice touch). The brisket was supposedly smoked. I couldn't taste any smoky flavor. Also, the seasoning was totally off. The dish was super bland. There was no depth to the flavors, and I needed the salt and pepper, and, eventually, a little hot sauce to finish off the dish. I also ordered the bacon. The bacon was thick, which I like, but way too salty. I also thought it was overcooked. I like crispy, but the tenderness was cooked out of most of it. The Spyhouse coffee was pleasant, but a little astringent. The atmosphere is amazing here, but the food did not win me over. read more

Yes yes yes to this place. 100% yes. Appetizer: Root Vegetable Salad.... let's be honest, how often do you want to lick your plate clean because the plate housed a salad. I can say only once in my life have I been so in love with a salad, and it was the root vegetable salad at Tullibee. The only way you can go wrong is by not ordering this, so do yourself a favor, get some veggies in your stomach and prepare to be amazed. Steak Tartar: This is only my second time having steak tartar so I'm no means an expert, but I can say my plate was veeery clean of all crumbs by the time it was cleared. Main: We split a 6 oz steak on special. It was outstanding, and you know what else was outstanding? The eggplant that accompanied it. Obviously I knew the meat would be good, and wow was it good, but I never thought I'd be so blown away by grilled eggplant. If I could have ordered seconds, I would have. Side: Cheesy potatoes. It's pretty hard to screw up a potato, no matter how you cook a potato, it's always tasty, but Tubille took the potato and brought it to the next level. Perfectly cooked potatoes topped with delicious delicious cheese.. yes I have had this at other places and it's always been good, but Tubille isn't good, it's great. (cue Tony the Tiger). Sat at the chefs counter as a walk in on a Saturday night around 500pm. Service was fantastic and so was the food! We were advised from our server about the surf and turf special (rib eye and scallops with risotto) so we took her word and went for it! The rib eye was a little salty, but cooked perfectly and was still delicious. I like salt, but for those of you who don't maybe as for lighter salt. The scallops were cooked to perfection! The vegetable risotto was absolutely delicious and all dishes paired very nicely together. It was a great place to sit and watch the kitchen work their magic. We've eaten at Tulibee twice and have had incredibly positive experiences each time. During our visits we've sat at the Chef's counter and both times we've had Bjorn and Carson cooking in front of us. Each time they've engaged with us during the entire dinner, helping us understand how things are prepared, what the taste profile should be, and providing samples of the items. This experience, especially with these two cooks, is one of the most unique and special dining experiences in Minneapolis. The food has also been out of this world. The duck is not gamey at all, rather tender and flavorful (they can tell you why when you sit there). The halibut is one of the best I've had, even after living in San Francisco. Incredibly moist with the perfect amount of salt and seasonings. Overall I can't say enough positive things about Tulibee. Outside of Carson and Bjorn, we've also had some wonderful servers. I used to love this place. I live downtown. It was a bday celeb for me and my guy. His sister paid $300+ for the bill. I ordered the 8oz Bavette 37 Limousin beef. It was $37. Not that bad. It came with a spread of mashed potatoes that tasted like they came from a box. The beef ... It had more fat and vein, I couldn't even get the beef off while trying to scrape it with my fork/knife. Every time I thought I was chewing beef, I was chewing the fat. Now I understand where they get that saying... Anyway ... They brought it to "Chef". Apparently he didn't give a f*ck. They gave our table of four people, 1 free glass of wine but did not take the "Bavette" off my bill or even offer a free dessert. I'm not in love anymore, just in "like" with the food. I'd like to think that we would have dined at Tullibee even if we weren't staying upstairs at Hewing Hotel. First: I adore the name. I like the way that word feels in my mouth. Apparently, a "tullibee" is a fish, but it also makes me think it could be a name for a well-natured but pretentious child of a musician. Neither here nor there. The vibe here is excellent. Hipstery yet accessible, casual, though a step above the local watering hole. The space is defined by its brick walls, warm wood elements, and leather accents. The mismatched linens and the tufted banquettes create a welcoming environment. There's so much to look at even before your food arrives. We dined twice during our stay; once for lunch and again for snacks at the bar before hitting the town. At lunch, I enjoyed the lamb sausage, served on skewers, alongside a pile of potato salad dressed with grain mustard; my companion had the steak frites with duck fat fries that I continually pilfered from his plate. Both dishes were great; full of flavor, well-plated, and served at the right temperature. For our evening snack the following day, we shared the crispy potatoes (an absolute must-have), oysters, and the house-cured bacon -- pretty much a slab of pork belly. All were excellent, though $9 for a bowl of potatoes and $10 for three (small) oysters made the prices hard to swallow. Service is pleasant and hospitable. Between our two visits, we found sitting at a table in the dining room to be more enjoyable, as the bar staff is considerably less poised than servers on the floor. First note - my biggest qualm with the restaurant is that on the weekends, they don't serve the Norwegian waffle. I mean - it's their specialty! Besides that though, I had a great experience at Tullibee! The service was fast and attentive - my water was never less than half full at all times. The modern design with their knit warmers for their coffee cups are so cute and is a great place for a fancy brunch. The food - let me tell you! We got a bunch of things to share: Duck fat fries - you can't go wrong with fries in the morning and the dipping sauces were spot on. The pancakes: Got these in place of the waffle and they were glorious. crispy on the outside but so melt in your mouth fluffy on the inside. not too sweet and a nice bowl of syrup.
