Came here on a date with the LivingSocial pre fixe 4 course dinner ($60 for $120) on a Thursday night. I had originally made reservations for 7, got lost along the way, got there at 7:35 and was still seated immediately and the hostess did not give us a hard time whatsoever.
Tryst immediately strikes you as a fine dining, romantic, intimate type of dinner setting. There are TVs on every wall, however, that kind of disrupt this mood. The Olympics were on so we didn't really mind, but I'm not sure a regular sports game would not have been conducive to the setting.
With the Living Social coupon, you get a few choices for each of the meals. For the first meal the choice was a corn chowder or a beet salad, so we decided we'd try both. My corn chowder was pretty big, creamy, and tasted GOOD. It had a little bit of a sweet taste to it to, which was unexpected- I definitely enjoyed it. I'm not really one for beets (I don't know too many males that are actually) but I thought the salad was well put together. It had beets, a ball of mozzarella, arugula, and a few other pieces. I probably wouldn't order it because I don't like beets, but she seemed too (and that's what's important in the end right?)
Second course we again split between the Wild Mushroom arancini and the Shrimp Taco. They only brought out one taco, and there was definitely too much food to squeeze into one little tortilla. I had to eat some of the shrimp first to get it to fit, but when I did it was great. The taco consisted of lightly fried butterfly shrimp, guacamole, some type of chipotle mayo sauce, along with the usual taco fixins and a lime. The arancini were awesome! The plate came out with 3 small rice balls fried with mushrooms on the inside, with some kind of green pesto-y sauce beneath them. The balls were light and crisp and had some serious flavor. The regular plate would have to be larger for me to order that as an appetizer than just 3 measly little rice balls though.
For our entrée, neither of us could resist the Eggplant Norma (there were a few, including pork, chicken, and salmon) I had no idea what "norma" meant, but the description of homemade cavatelli, basil and fresh ricotta sounded too good to pass up. Norma turned out to be the eggplant cut into bite size pieces tossed with the cavatelli in a tomato sauce and it was fantastic! The dish was actually phenomenal- the eggplant meshed perfectly with the sauce and the ricotta and I was blown away. I think that dish costs $17 on a regular menu and it would be worth every penny.
They brought us the everyday dessert menu to choose from, so there were about 7 or 8 choices for this course. We decided to go with the vanilla crème brulee and the homemade twinkie. The crème brulee was good, nothing special in my opinion, but the twinkie was oddly appealing. They baked the yellow cake full of this butterscotch filling and we really liked it. Definitely not something you see on a menu usually.
The next day I had an epiphany and realized there was an error with our bill (I should have noticed it initially but I was reeling from food coma) . Anyway, I called Tryst and the manager was able to pull up my receipt and agreed that there was indeed an error. Without hesitation, she offered to send me a gift certificate for the difference and urged me to please come back to make up for it. I was greatly surprised how genuine she sounded and the fact that she was willing to do that was above and beyond what she had to do since it was my fault for not noticing it earlier.
Great dinner, both of us really enjoyed. The Eggplant Norma was phenomenal read more
