I made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7:00 for two. Note: I originally went to make the reservation online from their website but the availability was not good, so I called instead. Online it pretty much looked booked between 4:30 and 8:00 - I called and was able to get 7:00 without hesitation. So, make note to call if you don't see the time or range listed online. We were greeted as we entered and checked in with the host/hostess. They were friendly and polite and told us it would just be a few minutes. They brought us back to our table and had us seated shortly there after. Our waitress was great; she told us about the specials, checked in on us, and made sure everything was as expected. We ordered some bevs that were very tasty and had great presentations. Speaking of presentation, let's get on to the food. We ordered the Tomahawk, which if you don't know, is a MASSIVE piece of meat. It's a steak meant to serve two people - in reality, it serves way more than two. The presentation of the tomahawk steak plate alone was beautiful! It had a whole bunch of stuff (see pic). They bring it out for you to see, and then they take it back to the kitchen to slice. We ordered medium rare, and probably should have gone more medium but it was not too rare so it was fine. Now, at The Bancroft, it is an à la carte style meal, meaning you order sides separately and usually a few for the table. We had the carrots (one of the specials), roasted potatoes, and creamed spinach. Forgot to say when you order meat, you also get to pick two sauces - and before anything while you wait they bring you some rolls and butter. The rolls started us off on the right foot knowing the meal was going to be phenomenal. They were warm with some sea salt on top and baked to perfection. The steak was mouth watering, juicy, and flavorful. The sauces added a great touch, and the sides were wonderful. It is safe to say, we did not leave hungry! As mentioned, while tomahawk is said to serve two, we had a lot of leftovers so of course we got those packed up to go. They were very considerate with the packaging, putting items in different boxes that made sense. We unfortunately did not have room for dessert but I'm sure it would've been awesome. The Bancroft is definitely a higher scale restaurant so it is on the pricer side, but it is justified. The food tastes great, presentation is there, and service is excellent. It's a great place for special occasions, celebrations, or just because as long as you know what to expect... but with prices today, I'd rather pay this and have it be worth it than what a crappy meal is costing today!

Tried the cassoulet which I've heard of before but never seen on a menu. It was very hearty but also a but bland. Pulled pork and pork belly seemed to have zero salt. Duck leg confit also very bland. It was cooked well but just bland. The dishes with citrus were quite tasty. Beets and arugala salad very good, good quality goat cheese. Alligator chorizo grilled oysters surprisingly good. Never had alligator chorizo before but it was crispy and not fatty even though it resembled bacon visually. The oysters were small, even more small in comparison to the chorizo but it was a good bite. I would recommend skipping the clam chowder, french onion soup (not really caramelized onions to be honest), and the cassoulet unless you feel empowered to salt your own food. The clientele was definitely in the 60+ range. Nothing wrong with that obviously but tastes change with age and maybe thats why the seasoning was so light. Today there were just two wait staff for the whole place. Seemed understaffed and it took almost thirty minutes for food to come out. Waiting for the check took about fifteen minutes. Staff was nice but definitely overloaded. Today was a holiday though.

We had a reservation for a celebratory dinner, and I commented to ask if the special would still be on for that date. The chef/owner responded immediately that it would. Knowing specials often run out quickly, I called on the morning of the reservation, and a hostess said, yes, the special was still on. So we got there, we ordered, and we asked for the special -- the waitress said she'd confirm, and then came back and just said 'no, it was just for that day,' which was confusing. I explained that the chef and the hostess had confirmed that it was still on the menu and asked if it had run out -- again, understandable -- and she said it 'was just something we made for an influencer.' At that point, I didn't want to press the two 'no' answers, so we finished the dinner and moved on. I reached out privately after the fact as I wanted to see if there was a better way I could have communicated to the restaurant or asked for clarification, and asked if there was a better way to confirm information moving forward, and they never responded. What has always stood out to us is the great service, family-friendly menu, and the quality of the food. The staff has consistently been welcoming and attentive, and that's a big reason we've remained loyal customers for so long. That said, over the last few years we've noticed a significant decline in the food quality. The service is still excellent, but the food just isn't at the same level it used to be. It's disappointing because this place set such a high standard for us. Personally, I'd rather pay a little more and see the restaurant maintain both its outstanding service and the food quality that made us fall in love with it in the first place.

Parking can be a little tricky as it is shared with a number of stores in a strip mall, but you may just have to walk a little bit. I also noticed that the table next to me sent one of their steaks back and also leaving it on their plates after it was brought back. For dessert, I had the coconut creme cake that was really good. When brought to the table there was no description of what the ingredients/flavors were in each - which is customary to share/explain so you know what you're drinking. The server didn't know, but did bring the answers back a little while later...thank you! They were out of one of the first course items on a two-course prix fixe menu (which unfortunately 3 of the four in our party had originally selected). For the second choice/back-up course (avocado toast) it was not accompanied by smoked salmon as stated on the menu but instead shrimp and cucumbers had been added - with no heads up from the server that they were also out of the smoked salmon....the dishes were brought to the table with no explanation or apologies whatsoever. In a very odd twist that I haven't experienced before, our original server said they were leaving for the day during the midst of our service and a new server worked with our table for the balance of the meal. The second course meals were fine - the steak in the steak eggs was delicious per the two people in our party who ordered that dish; the egg dishes the remaining two of us had were ok, nothing to write home about. Sitting at our table we witnessed the table next to us experience the same issues we had...and a friend of theirs swung by their table and shared even more egregious examples like never receiving their drinks at all, among others. As another reviewer wrote about their experience today, it was shocking that nothing was comped off of a $250 bill, discounted, or some future offer made to make up for our utterly unacceptable experience - never mind that we were there for 2.5+ hours! We are grateful to have restaurants like Tryst in Arlington but we will not return (we have dined there many times for special occasions over the years) and will no longer recommend it to friends either (which I have also done many times).
