We had gone to Bancroft several years ago and really liked it. It is a splurge kind of place so we don't go that often. We went on New Year's Eve and boy was it great. I rarely give five stars but this place deserves it. The atmosphere was as it should be, a restaurant, not a New Year's Eve sports bar. It started off with great dinner rolls that you could eat a hundred of. We also had a nice house Canernet Sauvignon. Appetizer was a seafood tower (oysters, shrimp, lobster). A great start. My wife had a filet mignon and fries, I had a rib eye (I never have any other steak) and Brussels sprouts. Everything was absolutely delicious, an absolute riot of flavor. If I could change two things, I wish they had a bone-in ribeye and I would pass on the red wine salt. A little TOO salty. I topped it off with cappuccino. We skipped dessert as they would have had to roll us out of there. Price pre-tip- $245. Worth every penny. This a great steakhouse and loke I said, I almost never give five stars. Was there for the first time. We were a large group ~ 12 people. Bar service prior to being seated was very good - great drinks and service. We were told we would have a table that sat 12 but ended up in a long bench seat that was very bad in terms of trying to have conversations - the bench seat had chairs on one side and a velour bench on the other...the velour bench was terribly uncomfortable...trying to 'scoot in/out' was a very arduous task. Seafood tower was good. Rib Eye steak was average at best - very salt about 1/2 inch thin. Came here for a work dinner with coworkers and was thoroughly impressed. Started out with a Drop Anchor cocktail, a tiki styled rum drink with passion fruit, clove, and cinnamon, the warmth of which was welcome given the cold and rain going on outside. From there, we went through a handful of appetizers and sides, the jumbo lump crab cake, a fig and prosciutto board, roasted garlic fingerling potatoes, and the sautéed local mushrooms (my favorite of the bunch). I was stewing on which entree to get and our waiter did a good job on selling me on the carnaroli lobster risotto, something rich and savory, and I figured it wouldn't be a trip to New England without getting seafood. Even after all this food, all of us managed to find space to split a banana coconut roulade (the cake itself being average, but with a fantastic coconut gelato on top) and an Irish cream cheesecake (fitting given this was the day before St Patricks day). This is a great steak house. This is a high end steak house with great food and service. My husband who eats at many great places thought his choices were good not stellar. I thought it was fantastic. The restaurant is very masculine with ample seating and a great feel. The drinks were delicious and strong. We started with bread being brought to the table with our drinks. It was so good. Served hot and it is a croissant type bread. For apps we got the prosciutto which was served with bread and an arugula salad and clam chowder. Both delicious and fresh. I have definitely had chowder as good or better at side of the road places but that's what you get for living in an area with great seafood. For mains we got the lobster risotto and rib eye with creamed spinach and bag of fries. The risotto was fine. It is what it is. I think a steak would be a better choice. The ribeye was stellar. Served with smoked salt. Best steak I've ever had. The creamed spinach was served with a runny egg. Good but needed a little seasoning. Finally the fries were good served with ketchup. I've dined at a number of the fancy steakhouses - Capital Grille, Moo, Morton's, Ruth's Chris, etc., but last week we had dinner here on a Monday night and I had the prime rib eye and it was the best steak I think I've ever had. It was cooked perfectly and had a number of sauces to choose from (I had the roquefort butter and it was great). The creamed spinach side was delish with a fried egg on top as were the creamy mashed potatoes. The meal was so rich, I brought half home and enjoyed it a second time, warming the steak in the oven. Next time I have an urge to splurge on a steak, I'll be heading to the Bancroft. read more

I ordered the steak tartare and creamed spinach for my meal. This was the best tartare I've ever had and I've had a lot. A bonus with the tartare was a little quail egg you put on the top yourself! The creamed spinach was wonderful, just needed a little salt. (I don't usually add salt to anything) My friend got Branzino, the whole fish. Very tasty and flaky. She also got the beet salad. Ambiance - 5. Really lovely upscale dining with relax cozy setting. Not too noisy and ideal for group chats. Service - 4 food delivered fairly fast but the service attitude could improve a little. Not as courteous or patient when my colleague asked for explanation on what was in the dish. Food - 5 the mushroom soup taste amazing and the way they presented the soup which they pour over the mushroom right off your table was unexpected nice surprise. Three thumbs up. I MISS JULIE Bartender made very good cappuccino otherwise seemed greener than the grass outside. Very nice very polite and well spoken....... however the service was nothing that I'm used to. I am not a demanding person but I was not offered bread and had to ask for it was told that they ran out. People next to me were regulars they got offered bread. I even gave them a Memento from Vietnam it was a Zippo replica lighter from Vietnam a helicopter pilot had given me a long time ago. No reaction. Not even a thank you Had the brick chicken which is very good when I got up to smoke went outside and was locked out and couldn't get back in banging for at least 5 minutes on the door and window. I mentioned this to the bartender he said yeah they close at 9:00 and it was 10:30 I said why don't you tell me before I go out? He Shrugged. When I went out again I placed another lighter I had in the door so it wouldn't close. Before I was about to go back in I noticed the couple next to me we're leaving and they open the door and knock the lighter to the ground and just walked away. That was funny because the text on the lighter read: Vietnam - the unwilling led by the unqualified to kill the unfortunate and return home to the ungrateful. This is America on Memorial Day When I did get back in and was going to have dessert my check was already on the bar. Wasn't even offered to order dessert. At these price points my expectations are high and not needlessly. Went the for dinner with some friends. The food was decent and the ambiance was actually nice. However, our waitress was rude, snippy, condescending and extremely unpleasant. We were actually shocked by how she spoke to us. Worked in the restaurant industry for many years and could not believe the gall of her. Spoke to the GM about it and she said she'd follow up to make it right - and not surprisingly, never did. Save yourself the trouble. The food is not that good that I'd tolerate being verbally accosted by the waitstaff. It's just a poorly run place. read more

I had 36 Chambers which was a Reposado Tequila cocktail. The drinks are strong so one and done but I had two. I really wanted a steak but chose Branzino instead. I've been here for a date night and more recently for a Father's Day lunch with my two small kids and both experiences were fantastic. Space is beautiful, but still comfortable and not intimidating. Staff is very friendly and attentive. The meal starts with incredible warm salty rolls and fresh butter which are to die for. Cocktails are fresh and well balanced. The kids menu here is small but very well executed and includes a starter, main, dessert, and beverage. The steaks are always great and their burger is incredible, tastes like a backyard burger on a warm summer day, very nostalgic and tasty. They start you off with nice and warm sweet rolls with salt sprinkled on top - I thought they were really good. We got the seafood platter for two and clam chowder to start. The platter was pretty good, not my favorite. Same with the chowder, it was really plain and surprisingly had no flavor. It just tasted like a cream soup with a hint of clam, but mostly potato. For entrees we got the ribeye and salmon, with mushrooms, asparagus, and fingerling potatoes as sides. I want to start off by saying the steak was sooooooo good. The flavor and how it was cooked was perfect. And my favorite side was the mushrooms. We only did the single serving but it was huge still. Now onto the meh choices which was the salmon. I wanted to be healthy and got the salmon - much regret. The flavor wasn't there, I was pretty disappointed. And the fingerling potatoes had no flavor either, it was barely a hint of rosemary. And the asparagus was fine, some parts were really hard, but it's fine. If you go here, just get the steak and mushrooms, you won't be disappointed! read more

My friends and I were in the Woburn area on a Tuesday night. We weren't sure where we wanted eat but with the help of Yelp, this place came up as a suggestion and the pictures made the food look great. It was around 7 when we made up our minds and were able to get reservations for 8:15 pm. First impression was FANCY. The lights are dim, everything is black and gold, people are dressed well, and it smells great. Our table was in a nice location and the couch side of the table was extremely comfortable. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful throughout the night. I ordered the ribeye cooked to medium with the garlic parley butter on top. For sides I had the asparagus and French fries, with an add on of bone marrow. The presentation was excellent, it was topped with lots of colorful and flavorful stuff. The garlic parsley butter was on the side and it was delicious--not too strong of a parsley flavor, which it was creamy, smooth, and light. The steak was cooked to my perfection. I was being a bit risky on ordering medium since I usually go for medium well (it's quite the improvement from where I started--well done) but it was cooked exactly how I was hoping--somewhere between medium and medium well. The steak was well seasoned, perfect color externally, and as any good ribeye, fatty in some areas. I was in heaven. The sides I was not too impressed by. The asparagus were nice and thick but flavor wise, they were pretty regular. The fries were a bit stale, but the truffle sauce helped a bit. The bone marrow was delicious. Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon with a reservation, but given how many parties were there at such a large restaurant, I would say we didn't need one. The space is huge, but I would say maybe 1/3 tables were full - probably just a lunch thing though, I would expect the space to fill up a lot for dinner. The menu for lunch was very small in my opinion with not too many options, but we each settled on our dishes relatively quickly. Our server was nice, but super unattentive in my opinion. We were seated right behind their event room at a booth, making it very hard I think to flag down anyone as someone would have to be walking down the aisle of booth seating to even see us. This made ordering, asking for more water, and getting the check very difficult. The sangria I got was nice, pretty light but relatively flavorful. The chowder was pretty delicious and I enjoyed the larger crackers. The oysters were fine enough- size wise decent and not too bad. The steak was really well cooked I think and was definitely a good entree dish. The fries it came with were yummy as well! Lastly, the desserts were great - really big and delicious while not being overly sweet. Overall, the service left a bit to be desired, but the high quality of food outweighed this small con. I would be curious to see the space for dinner as I'd picture it being busier - would the service be better or worse with more people? Immediately yes. That is the review. But honestly, if you haven't been to The Bancroft, it's a must try. Located in Burlington so it may be out of the way for some but it's worth the drive (and there's free parking). My waiter Thiago provided recommendations based off of my and my date's taste. I had prime steak au a poivre. I was a little nervous b/c sauces can go left when done wrong but it was the perfect touch. My date had the dry aged ribeye. He had no complaints tho he enjoyed my steak over his own after trying it. We shared a crab cake and oysters. I highly recommend the crab cake which is served with avocado and a plantain crisp. It's chefs kiss, perfection. For drinks we had the rum punch. If you never listen to me again, TRY the rum punch. It's strong but sweet and just enough for a drink and a half (it's served in a cute bottle which is left at the table for an extra pour). I ended with an espresso martini with baileys. This place is a gem. It's not overly crowded and while some spots are either good with food OR drinks. The Bancroft has me sold on both. read more

We were frequent customers at The Bancroft and know the menu by heart. We have our favorite dishes. Yet one evening, after an intense day, we called at 8:45pm to see if there was space for us to rush there for dinner. The guy on the phone said, if you can get here by 9:04, we can seat you and take the order. We ran into the car and got to the door. There was a group of people leaving, so we politely waited, and then walked in. The guy that had picked up the phone then said, "you're too late. I had said 9:04." We were shocked, we looked at the time and it was 9:04. We said, "it's 9:04!" And be responded, "I told you that you had to be seated by 9:04. So we can't seat you now." My family and I were shocked at his attitude, tone, insensitive response. What an awful person. I've never met such a rude person there in the many years we have gone. read more

While my latest couple of experiences have been significantly better than my first visit here... my initial experience surfaces in my brain every time I even contemplate going back (it was truly THAT BAD). A friend of mine absolutely loves this place, so I've (somewhat reluctantly) returned, and have had much better experiences. If not for that first visit, I'd probably give them 4 stars. This place is pricey. Every once in a while we discuss going there for lunch, see that the steak sandwich (least expensive option of interest) is $22, and reconsider... This is only a dinner place for me. Steaks is the way to go; I ordered the Ribeye with a side of mashed. Someone else ordered the garlic parsley butter, so I stole a bit. My wife ordered the skirt steak. Food was prepared well. Our waiter was very attentive, topping off beverages, and checking in regularly. Overall, this place has nice ambiance. It's a bit more expensive, but you're likely aware of that ahead of dining here. I'd personally opt for a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse over The Bancroft, but I imagine that's personal preference. Stopped in here on a business dinner so no pics :( I ordered the salmon - it was good and a great portion size. I thought the charred style didn't really work for salmon. The mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. The rolls that come on the table are so good! They had a nice selection of non-alcoholic drinks so I ordered a non-alcoholic prosecco and it was great. My biggest gripe about this place is how LOUD it is. On a weeknight, with the crowd we had, the noise was so loud we could barely hear each other speak - probably something to do with the design of the ceilings. read more

What a delightful restaurant. My friend reported that his ribeye steak was perfectly cooked. I had a Caesar salmon salad, cooked exactly as requested. The Caesar salad was deconstructed and artfully arranged with a thin crisp toast instead of the usual croutons, festooned with three anchovies. It was delicious. Our server, Victoria, was excellent! She was attentive without being servile or annoyingly ingratiating. She was observing our table from a nearby location from which she was not in our line of sight, and overheard me commenting about not making a fuss over my friend's birthday (as he requested). She appeared moments later with a tiny plate containing three lovely chocolate truffles and a single candle inserted into a raspberry, which she quietly served without embarrassing my friend by singing. It was such a thoughtful gesture. I would definitely return to this restaurant for the great food, elegant atmosphere, ample parking, and excellent service. read more
