If you think mid-week tavern food is just an afterthought, Sam Walker's American Tavern is here to prove you wrong. We came here on a Wednesday evening to celebrate my wife's birthday. She had been here once before and insisted I would love the food. I'll admit I was a little skeptical, but I was absolutely blown away. The Vibe & Service: Logistics matter, so I was thrilled to find plenty of parking. Inside, the ambiance is wonderfully cozy with a mildly busy, comfortable energy at the bar. We brought our 1.5-year-old toddler, which can sometimes complicate dining out, but we were seated immediately. Our waitress greeted us before we had even settled into our chairs, and the service was top-notch from start to finish. Drinks & Kids Meal: My wife ordered one of their mule mocktails, which was incredible. Knowing we were on a toddler's schedule, we ordered her the fish and chips right away. The kitchen was super fast--it came out remarkably quick and was fantastic. It kept our little one happily occupied the entire meal (she even learned how to dip her fries in ketchup and ranch tonight!). The Food: We originally planned to start with appetizers and order entrees later, but the portions were so decent that we never made it to the main courses! * Dry Rub Chicken Wings: A masterclass in execution. Decently sized and served at the perfect temperature. They were crispy on the outside, beautifully moist on the inside, and cooked to absolute perfection. Honestly incredible. * Buffalo Chicken Nachos: These stole the show. I have eaten plenty of nachos in my life, but these were unequivocally the best I've ever had (my wife wholeheartedly agreed). The secret? Even the tortilla chips themselves are seasoned! They were loaded with a highly generous amount of everything, topped off with fresh guacamole. We completely wiped the plate clean. Highly recommend! Dessert: We capped off the night with a warm brownie accompanied by their made-from-scratch ice cream. An absolutely incredible finish to the meal. The Verdict: I am shockingly surprised by the elite caliber of the quality, taste, and service here. Everything about this place fired on all cylinders. Busy spot was full and had a solid 30 min wait on a Saturday night, so we were hopeful that it would be good. Highlight of the evening was a delicious Mango Peach hard cider from a Boston brewery - food was not that special. First, we saw "loaded tots" on the menu and were excited for traditional cylinder tater tots smothered in cheese and bacon, etc. What came out was NOT a traditional tot, but more of a mashed potato croquet stuffed with cheese and fried. It was very tasty, but way heavier and denser than we were thinking. Entrees were hit or miss, got some fish tacos that were VERY spicy (couldn't finish them they were so spicy) and a grilled chicken sandwich that was just mid. Sam Walkers is a great place to grab food and a drink. I would definitely recommend making a reservation. For starters we always get the nachos with pulled pork and guacamole. These are some of the best nachos you'll eat. For entrees my wife loves the Cajun pasta. I get either the smash burger or the chicken tenders. I've gone to San Walkers twice now, the first time was a busy weekend night. The place was packed and the energy was very positive. The bartenders were incredibly attentive and friendly given the amount of customers they were serving! I then went back on a weekday for lunch, I ordered a basic cheese pizza and had a couple drinks. Rare to leave a 2 star review for me, but I tried to give this place a chance again and the food and ambiance is not worth it. We thought we were playing it safe and ordered the royale burger and green goddess bowl - both looked pretty good, but were a disappointment. We got the burger and it was mostly rare / very pink and essentially raw and cold in the middle - didn't finish it. The fries were also cold, which was a bummer because who wants cold fries? For the green goddess bowl we asked for a vinaigrette on the side, but got green goddess dressing on the side - I think this was a kitchen error as we saw the server input our substitute in the toast device. Acoustically this place is in dire need of sound dampening as it's one giant room mostly. It is very loud and difficult to have a conversation. Went to Sam Walkers for the second time. First time I got Steak Tips while my daughter got the Chicken Pie. The tips were just OK and she said the Chicken Pie was so hot should couldn't taste anything. Second time I wanted to play it safe and got the Deluxe Burger done medium. My daughter got the Pesto Chicken Pasta. My burger was OK although it was a bit on the rare side. Her Pesto Chicken looked incredible when it came to the table. However, the chicken had a really strange taste and the pasta was so loaded with tasteless pesto sauce it was swimming. Needless to say we let the server know and she took it right off the bill. My daughter got a salad and a Barvarian Pretzel instead. The pretzel was very good but the beer sauce was very grainy and not much flavor. The mustard sauce was pretty good though. There isn't much of a seasonal drink selection. All in all not a place we will return. read more

Solid place to go for food and drink if you find yourself Bermuda Triangle of Woburn/Wakefield/Melrose off of 93. I work in the area a few times a month and have popped by on various Tuesdays to wait out the traffic. To my surprise even on Tuesday it has always been very lively! I think a lot of commuter workers have the same idea + it's a shared lot with a hotel. Big space, really nice decor, casual elevated sports bar vibe. Good for groups but the bar areas could also be good spots to strike up conversations. The menu is enticing with some rotating dishes. My favorite so far was the steak Fajita bowl but everything I've tried has been pretty good including the smash burger and Shrimp Fra Diavlo, buff chicken dip solid. Good cocktails for sure. Showed up early for dinner with a friend and settled in with a Negroni while I waited. Not a bad way to kill time, honestly. The drink was excellent, and I used the opportunity to scope out the menu. Spotted the Steak Au Poivre Frites and knew immediately that's what I was getting. Sometimes you just know. My friend finally arrived (fashionably late, as friends do) and ordered a margarita up with sugar on the rim. Plot twist: it came with salt. Now, I've made this mistake myself after a few drinks, but these folks were stone-cold sober, so that was... interesting. But before we could even process this sweet-and-salty betrayal, they swooped in with a replacement faster than you can say "sodium chloride." Crisis averted, dignity intact. My friend mentioned she has a shellfish allergy, and the staff was incredibly careful with her order. The manager even personally brought out her lettuce wraps to make sure everything was safe. Really appreciated that level of attention. The steak was fantastic - perfectly cooked and seasoned. Meanwhile, our server struck the perfect balance of being attentive when we needed something but giving us space to catch up since we hadn't seen each other in ages. As always, I liked the lighting and it was crowded, but not too loud. Great food, solid service, and they clearly take allergies seriously. Definitely worth checking out. read more

The flavor was good, but the coleslaw tasted a little bitter at times and the breading slid off the chicken making it messy to eat. The short rib plate was delicious, minus the short rib. The mash potatoes were well seasoned and asparagus well cooked. However, the short rib was not seasoned at all, the meat was tender though. Had some wonderful drinks for girls night. I previously have had not the best experience at Sam Walkers but tried again this evening and had a much better time. Came in and got seated right away at a high top. The host wasn't friendly or not friendly fly, just there. Our server was a peach and kept checking in on us to make sure we weren't thirsty, had some good and topping our water off. She was a great server. Had the painkiller and the drink of the month, $2 of the drink goes to a special foundation that they support. Pretty cool that they do such a thing. Drinks were nice and had a good amount of booze vs filler. We also had buffalo chicken dip, little expensive for what we were given but still good. The portion was small but loved how you got chips and veggies with it. All in all, had a wonderful time. Drinks are 10/10 and our server (forgot her name, sorry!) was wonderful. Pretty full for lunch. Had the Thai lettuce wraps; big mistake; I can still taste the salt 5 hours later. Nothing about it tasted remotely Thai except for a bottled sauce on the side. Heading home, had a sudden GI event. Took a takeout bowl home for my partner and he couldn't eat it because of the salt and he eats anything. The server never checked to see if we were ok. We ordered the fatman's fried pickles, and I got the turkey smash burger and sippin' on gin & juice. The fried pickles were good, however more sauce was definitely needed. The turkey burger was ok, lacked flavor, but the fries were good. My drink was light and refreshing. Service was good. I would come here for drinks and appetizers/snacks, but I wouldn't come here for a meal. Parking can be difficult on a crowded night and we ended up parking by the hotel. I was pretty impressed with Sam Walkers! I used to go here before it was Sam Walkers and from an appearance, layout, makeover/renovation standpoint, boy - they did a fabulous job!! They really turned this space around and made it into a nicer restaurant and bar. I went for brunch and it was very busy which was great to see. I will say the acoustics were not the best so it was very loud but it was not the end of the world - and I think there were some big sports games on so it may not be as bad on any given day. The food was decent - I would go back and try some other items. I did not get any adult beverages, but from what I read and saw they looked pretty good!! I ordered the Adult Iced Coffee that arrived in a huge mug with cream with iced coffee, vodka liqueur and sprinkled with chocolate chips. Creamy and not too sweet. Party of 5 of us made reservations for 3:45 on 1/17. We were seated near the bar area to watch the game and have dinner. Server came over to us a short while after to explain that they also have 30 people reserved for 7 and that we had to leave by 7. She said " 3hrs should be enough ". If you're a paying customer, you shouldn't have to leave! The food and waiter was excellent, but we all felt rushed as we were told we had to leave by a certain time. Our group came from all different parts of the state and some had over a 2hr ride just to get there. They couldn't accommodate us to another table. Had lunch with old coworkers and I must say that I love their nachos and Italian eggrolls. The nachos were perfect for me and honestly want to go back right now for them. The sauce and toppings were spread evenly on top and it wasn't crazy salty, or taste burnt. Appetizers were so good, there were high expectations set for the Royale Burger, but alas, I liked the stringy onions that came with it the most. So nice and sweet. As for drinks, they have alot of options, from beer to drinks decorated with candy. I kept it simple and ordered a Sam Adams and then a drink that a portion of will go to charity. Always do charity when I can. My friends loved the presentation of their dishes and noted the drinks were strong (thumbs up!). Carrots/celery w blue cheese: average. $34 for the one order of wings with one vodka drink including 20% tip. No value here - seems overpriced for what you get. Brunch? OVERRATED. Went with a big table for brunch... the people at the door were kind, but clueless to our long-standing reservation. Once sat, the server was incredible, sweet, attentive 10/10. The food... Ordered the "famous" French Toast Sticks - only one of the 3 orders came with the Mascarpone Dip, which is mentioned on the menu. The breakfast burrito was fine, but do not get a side of Guac. For $3 you get barely a teaspoon of guac that is already brown. The drinks were highly inconsistent in quality and strength.. one would be great, the next tasted like it was virgin and then back again to fine. The original 10/10 server asked one person at the end of the table if we wanted desert and when she said no we were snuck the bill and they ran away. When the rest of us said we wanted one more round the server's whole demeaner changed... (this was not the end of his shift and he had multiple empty tables around us). Selected Sam Walker's for Sunday brunch before going to get our Christmas tree. The restaurant was fairly busy, around 12:30 but we were seated quickly. I ordered a burger, cooked medium, came out of the kitchen basically raw. When the wait staff returned to check our meals she acted like I was being unreasonable. Then took the burger to the manager. There was no apology just that I would need to wait for another one to be cooked. My daughter had already gotten her food. Her biscuit was served with no butter/jam.
