3 stars but debating a 2. T pumps is becoming a place where all they care about is the money and not really the customers. Drinks have stayed the same though. They raised their prices about 50 cents at all locations and decreased the number of cashiers. There is usually a long line, but only one cashier. I though it was because they were understaffed. But after going there several times during busy hours with only one cashier, I knew it was because they know they can get away having people wait a long time to order and get their drinks while still making money. Seriously, increase prices and decreasing number of workers is pretty bad. Not only that, they don't have the rewards card machine most of the time, so the cashier has to do extra work to manually type in your phone number. Their syrup choices on the main menu is not updated, for more flavors its on a hand written board on the wall. I'll still come here every once in a while, but the long wait and somewhat expensive drinks are making it less worth it. read more

This place is good... but sort of confusing. What is the hype about? Yes, they use real brewed tea, but the "milk" is created with powder. Isn't this just as synthetic as using syrup or bottled tea? I got a mango milk tea with less sugar and my boyfriend got a peach milk tea with boba. He really like their boba (it's slightly on the soggier side for my liking). The flavored milk tea tasted pretty artificial and diluted. Their sizes are really big, I believe the medium is 16oz, while the large size is 24oz. The medium size is easily a large anywhere else! Im probably here more often than my mom plays candy crush so that says a lot about how often I come. I always stick to combinations that I know will taste good together such as litchi(lychee)-honey or passion-honey milk tea. Bad combos lead to bad reviews which is probably why tpumps has three stars yet people are still lining up out the store on the block. Ill be coming back as usual to satisfy my milk tea cravings. It amazes me how people involve their opinion of the wait and use it as a way to lower the overall score of this place. If you come to a place that has a lot of hype or you can obviously a long line, don't attack an establishment with your lack of patience. /rant I loved coming to the one in San Mateo, and the wait never felt as long even when the line was all the way out close to the middle of the block. However, the SF Tpumps did not meet my expectations compared to their San Mateo store. The flavor was a bit lacking, and tasted a little bit watered down. I love the T-Pumps in San Mateo and also this one in San Francisco. I guess I've gotten lucky the 3-4 times I've visited this location, because I've never had to wait for more than 1-2 minutes to order my drink (I've come here on Saturdays and weekday nights). I like the ability to fully customize your drinks here. The regular T-pumps size is more than enough for me and my go-to flavors are the honey peach/passion black milk tea with regular boba and light sweetness. I love that the boba here is in between "large" and "mini/small" boba. The right amount of chewiness without going overboard. The milk teas here are not overwhelmingly heavy or sweet. My friends have raved about the strawberry+blackberry black milk tea combo, so I may try that next. Parking is do-able and customer service seems a-okay. This is one of my favorite boba places! I'd choose T-pumps over Purple Kow any day :) read more

Tpumps has been my go-to boba place on Irving. It used to be Teaway, but that fell out of my rotation. The price is friggin' great for what you get in these drinks and how customized you can make them, everything from the temperature, type of tea, flavors, type of boba, etc. The lines can be an issue sometimes, but somehow luckily the last time I went there was no line (around 2PM on a Sunday). Parking can suck, but that's to be expected. There's no seating inside aside from a bench along the wall so you gotta dip after you get your drink. read more

Argh! Another over-hyped teeny-bopper establishment. This was my second time at Tpumps. First time at the San Mateo location (not a fan), second and maybe the last time today at the SF one. Had to give Tpumps another chance. Driving by, I knew the wait was going to be long (don't know why I do this to myself with these long lines. The unbearable wait at Bambu already scared me). Parked my car, fed meter for 50 minutes. Waited in line with all the high schoolers standing in front of me, chatting about their drama of the opposite gender. Line moves moderately slow. There was literally about 50 folks ahead of me and another 20 or so waiting for their drinks. As I was inched closer to the register, I decided to get a regular light sweet, less ice Mango/Passion/Green Milk Tea with Boba. This drink cost me $2.99. After I ordered my drink, I had to go back out to feed the meter which probably cost me total $5. Of course, the calling out names on the cups was a disaster. It's so noisy inside so when the drinks were called, four to five people stepped up to determine if the drinks were theirs. Why can't these places just use the number system? I mean, there are so many Michaels, Johns, Jennifers. To distinguish myself, next time I'm Rainbow Brite or She-ra. Was the drink good...Now drum roll please...................No. The drink tasted like artificial, Chinese candy with 'some' tea flavor. Have to admit the Boba was good; soft and chewy but that didn't make up for the milk tea. I ordered semi-sweet, but the drink was very sweet. And may I say this is the first I've ordered a fruity typed milk tea. I normally order the Jasmine Green Milk Tea, but with the not-so pleasant, diluted order from the San Mateo location, I figured I should try some thing new since all the youngins ordered the fruit type flavors. This place is horrible!!! Why would anybody want to wait sooo long for nasty drinks??? I have had their drinks 4 times now, each trying a new drink. Green milk tea - not bad, nothing special Passion milk tea - pretty good but a little too sweet Strawberry milk tea - tastes too sour, I was expecting more like a strawberry n cream kind of drink. Taro coconut milk tea- this is the most nasty drink I ever had. The drink was too sweet and very very powdery. Does not taste like theres fresh taro at all! Now that boba has been trending and on the rise, much higher quality boba joints have appeared across the city. Unfortunately tpumps just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Coming here is a drag if you aren't one of the hundreds of middle school children who cut in line and stand in your way to take Instagram pictures of their drinks. So its closer to my house than San Mateo so why not? Arrived at 9:45pm doors were closed and there was no line? I don't understand ? Tpumps in San Mateo closes their door at exactly 10pm. The person was so rude literally pushing customers away. 2nd time, there was no line. Ordered my usual Normal Black Milk Tea, my drink taste like syrup and milk. I don't understand why can they make a simple drink while there are no customers?!?! Moral of the story, this place is whack, rude and just not living up to its original shop at San Mateo where service is much better and closes at exactly 10. Okay, long lines and a crowd do not make a place good. I came just 15 minutes after they opened on a Sunday and there were probably 20 people ahead of me. I ordered a large lychee milk tea with boba. The wait wasn't actually as long as I expected. Definitely not purple kow long. While I waited I realized that there is only one long bench for people waiting and there was only standing room left. It's really warm and uncomfortable in there too. After about 15 minutes, my drink came in a rather large cup. First impression, okay it's $4 for this bucket. First taste? Extremely sweet. Too sweet. Sugar water. Yuck. The bobas were sweetened themselves in addition to the drink which really didn't taste like lychee. There were no bits of lychee inside like I'm used to at Wonderful. This was awful. I should have gone to Tea Way to get the same sugary drink for half the price. The good news is that they served some kind of mandarin coconut tea while we were waiting for our orders. The tea was sweet but not too bad by itself. I've been to Tpumps 3 times in the last two weeks and I'm pretty impressed. The wait seems daunting but it's not too bad when you start to develop an obsession for their honey boba. I've NEVER heard of a boba shop running out of their boba before so you begin to think - they must make exclusive orders from the best boba makers in Asia! So far, I really like the Honey Boba Milk Tea, Mango Honey Boba and Passion Honey Boba. I love that they use real tea leaves too! Finally, I'm very happy with their costumer service. The most artificial tea with boba I've ever had was from right here. How artificial you ask? As artificial as (insert well known, hated celebrity name here) walking out of a plastic surgery clinic artificial! The drink doesn't even taste like tea, and no matter how low sweetness you choose, it still tastes sickeningly sweet. Imagine: coffee creamer, a shot of flavor syrup, and water. Not very appetizing. I thought that this place would be a hit based on the ridiculously long line, but now I want my 40 minutes back... The employees are pretty artificial here too. I love me some Tpumps. I have not been disappointed once every time I come here to get my Tpumps fix. For people like me, who are so indecisive about almost everything about life, this place might be a little intimidating because this milk tea joint is all about you and what you want in terms of flavor, choice of tea, milk, sweetness, and toppings. I'm curious to know how they determine the sweetness because I always choose light, but my drink is always sweet regardless. Just a thought of mine! I get my drink without milk each time, and it is so refreshing. Add in some popping boba, and you have a winning drink. It just makes my experience of drinking my creation all the more fun! Went for Grand Opening day. I decided to be smart and beat the crowd by going at 1pm - right after the high school kids finish lunch and go back to class. Boy was I wrong. I forgot about the college kids. Actually the line wasn't as bad as the soft openings. The line only went up to inside the door versus going out the door and down the street during the soft opening. Still it was a 30 minute wait just to get to the cash register (had to feed the meter sometime while waiting b/c I did not expect it to take THAT long). I knew it was going to be a while before my order is ready so I decided to go run some errands. Went to the bank, came back still not ready. Went to order a sandwich at the corner AND ate it, came back and it still wasn't ready. Waited another 10 minutes and they finally called my name..... after a total of 1 hour time spent. 1 hour for a boba drink...... To be honest, the drinks were pretty good. They brew them fresh with loose leaf tea so it's gourmet tea that they're selling. I liked the honey boba balls - probably one of the best I've had, sweet and chewy. I ordered the Pomegranate Milk Tea - less sweet -and it tasted great but was waaaaay too sweet for my taste. I thought it was just me but my boss tried the peach which was ordered less sweet and he said the same thing - too sweet. I tried a sip and yup, it was definitely on the sweet side. My cousin tried it the day before and ordered less sweet - same reaction. I think there's a trend here. Ease up on the sweetness, Tpumps! Bottom line: if it's a short wait, I would say it's one of the better places I've been to. If the wait is always going to be this long.... I probably will not be coming back anytime soon. read more

My second time was so much better than the first. I swear it was just that one blonde cashier, not to be a hater. The line was out the door, and covering the front of the Korean restaurant next door (which is good too), and that's where I was stud standing. A Sunday afternoon during the week of spring break though makes it quite understandable (I swear I always go at the worst times). BUT. Unlike my first time (just outside the door, 40 minute wait), even though I was much further out the door the wait was much shorter (in front of the Korean place, 30 minute wait). This was most definitely because of the TWO seemingly experienced cashiers working. This time I got three different drinks. Lychee black milk tea (cause yeah, it's a REAL drink they carry, because NO the lychee DOESN'T curdle the milk..): This is what my cousin and I got and I liked it, as did she. A bit frothy, but good lychee taste. Very smooth and the tapioca is always very good. Peach black tea: According to my mom it's very good. I think it'l probably be her usual. Almond black milk tea: According to my dad, very good. Good almondy flavor (which is good considering he's usually very particular about it since he always complains about how he "can't taste the flavor at all"). The drinks were made faster (only 10 minute wait) though they were put in a bag cause the larger cups don't fit in the cup holders. This admittedly made me a little nervous cause I'm always paranoid about bag handles breaking or the bottoms falling through. My favorite thing about tpumps workers is that they always ALWAYS wipe down the drinks before they give them to the customers. Sticky hands was always a pet peeve of mine. :D read more

A line out the door for this? Sometimes it's just hype... I was visiting SF for the day with some girlfriends, all of whom happen to be foodies as well. We were pretty meh that day so we agreed we wanted at least two things for sure, Korean food and Milk Tea. We were already going to Honey Berry across the street so we thought, why not since it's so popular! Horrible mistake. The servings are huge and at a very reasonable price. The menu is large and the easy to navigate. Good selection, all of the basics! The set up was impressive, they had cool mechanical shakers, and an assembly line staff to be very efficient. They even gave free samples to waiting patrons, great considering the heat and the wait time! I got a regular sized, light, honey almond black milk tea with boba and red beans (extra .50, np!) I didn't like how they put a lot of powder in some drinks... When I got my drink there was no red bean, but they put some in right away after I pointed it out. It looked so good! My first sip, I coughed and gagged. It felt like straight sugar was going down my throat! I have never had a drink so sweet in my entire life. My friends all liked theirs so tried mine. 'Damn!' 'WTF' 'Holy Crap!' were their reactions. Most of my boba were clumped together in a big gooey mess so it would jam the straw and I would have to sip for dear life before just throwing the boba out. The place was way too chaotic to go back and ask for another drink and I was too stubborn to throw it away. I should have, I felt like I had diabetes afterwards. I should have just stuck with Honey Berry, I had a sip of my friend's milk tea with boba from there and it was so good! Overall, I don't really recommend. Service is nice but drinks are definite no. OK I have to fire back to all these people whining because my first ever experience at Tpumps was nothing short of amazing. First off, yes the wait is ridiculous. My fiance and I went one Sunday afternoon. The line was to the door but we decided to wait. The wait is an experience in itself. I am a people watcher so I didn't mind the wait. Patience is a virtue. It was hot inside. The heat accumulated from everyone's body heat definitely sets the temperature in the room. It's in SF so I understand that the owners didn't feel the need to set up an AC (I wouldn't). Moving on. We ordered a large taro milk tea (with black tea as our base) with regular boba. The drink came with REAL TARO. The boba was perfectly cooked with the right amount of sweetness. And texture wise (chewiness), it was also 100% perfect in my book. It's so far the best boba I've ever had. I thought milk tea was such a fad, much like frozen yogurt and cupcakes. But because of Tpumps, I think it's here to stay. read more

5 stars purely for their HONEY BOBA, a constant craving that often seduces me into driving half an hour out of my way. Other than the honey boba, T-pumps is a pretty average bubble tea shop. I've never had great milk tea there, and you should order "less sweet" if you're not a fan of sugar. They used to very enthusiastically advertise their willingness to fix any drink, but I've never tried. If it's your first time here, I recommend "watermelon peach green tea with honey boba, no milk". It's a standard order among my group of friends, all of whom have very different tastes. There's also a sign listing over twenty popular drinks on the wall next to the line. Unlike other tea shops, they do an excellent job of mixing flavors and you should try. It's pretty hard to go wrong here - as long as you get the honey boba. read more

I really want to give this place a high rating but I just can't. The quality of their drinks have really gone downhill, and it was never as good as the one in San Mateo in the first place. I can taste the potential in flavors, but it is just so watered down now that I feel like I'm getting half my ordered drink mixed the rest of the way with water. I'm guessing they reuse the tea leaves to the point where there is no more flavor? Their honey boba is usually good but they're out of that til June, which makes no sense. It was disappointing all around... My boyfriend wanted to get my money back for me but I told him not to bother. I had to see what the hype was about after noticing mobs of people coming out this place. I decided to give it a shot and come in during what I thought would be "off" hours, so came in at 11 am on a Friday morning. While it didn't take the hour or so that some people endured, it still took me just over 20 minutes to get a fairly simple Black Milk Tea with Large Tapioca. (Although the line was fairly short, it took a long time because most of the patrons were high schoolers on their lunch or free period break ordering dozens of drinks at a time for their other friends waiting at school). I will not be back based on my experience. While the boba balls themselves were cooked perfectly to my liking (they were soft, a little warm, and with a nice chew) and the large size was a great value for the price (just over $3) the most important part of the drink was SUPER disappointing. If you gave me what I ordered and I had no idea what it was supposed to be, my first guess would be milk. After waiting in line for 20 minutes, I ended up with what tasted like a large glass of milk with boba at the bottom. No hint of any tea flavor at all. Surprised at all the low stars these yelpers have given. I fell into the hype and tried it out in its original store in San Mateo, since then haven't had boba at any other spot. Yes, most of their flavors are powdered but the tea they put in it makes up for it. Its fanFCKNtastic. The drinks aren't heavy or thick, its very light and has that "refreshing" tea taste to it. I absoFCKNlutely love tpumps. The usual orders: Me - taro/coconut green milk tea son #1 - almond green milk tea son #2 - lychee green milk tea son #3 - strawberry milk tea ALL WITH BOBA. The boba is very good, a good consistent "chew/gumminess" to it and it must be boiled in honey or something bc the bobas have a sweetness to them. DOWNFALL! I don't think the SF store has developed a system yet. UNDERstaffed is a HUGE UNDERstatement. Considering the hype from their SM store they should've been more prepared with opening the SF being in the sunset, location and all. Workers are pleasant but seemed to be working in slow motion which becomes frustrating having to wait close to2hrs for a drink. Other than that, I love tpumps. read more

Absurdly long lines At least 30 min wait for boba when they're not busy (ie you made it inside the door) I was really excited for Tpumps to open in San Francisco because my one experience in San Mateo was a positive one. Ok - what is up with their hours? Why do they open starting at 4pm? Obviously that is when all the tweens get out of school and line to get in this place is about half a block long by the time it is 3:45pm. They use Torani flavored syrup (gasp) and Coffeemate creamer (double gasp) for their milk tea. The cups are super flimsy. I've seen the cups jump from peoples hands and onto the floor on several occasions. Tpumps also gives you like 10 boba balls per drink unless you pay an extra $0.50 for extra boba. You can mix your flavors but a few combinations I've had have been misses. When I ask what they recommend, they really couldn't give me any good recommendation. The green milk tea is decent. The boba balls are very inconsistent and the level of sweetness is very inconsistent. Why even ask if I want regular or extra sweet when the regular can taste too sweet or too bland? I don't know why I keep going back. If only Purple Kow would open a 2nd location I would be very happy. read more

I came on a hot sunny day and paid my first visit this weekend. The line was only at the front door, but I still waited an hour to purchase and receive my drink. I was so thirsty that I went across the street to buy a box drink and even had to ask the cashier to get a cup of ice water to stay hydrated. This place is really overated! While my service experiences at this location have been better than my experiences at the San Mateo location, my reservations about the tea are the same: way too sweet, and inadequate amounts of boba. 1) Thing is, the tea itself is good, I agree. But for my palette (and anyone that is a more sensitive to sweetness than your average), even light sweet is too sweet. 2) Boba is half of the tea experience in my opinion, and I'm just never satisfied with how much I end up getting. I finally got to try Tpump today because line wasn't too long, finally! I was reading the menu on how to order the drink, and I noticed it says "Milk? Lactose Free"....well after talking to the worker, it's because they don't use real milk, they use Coffee-Mate instead of real milk!! Coffee-mate is not even made with real milk so is that why there's ? after Milk? So instead of getting my usual Milk Tea, I opted for Passion fruit tea (without milk) with honey boba. Boba was nice & chewy, just right but I don't get why this place is so popular. I prefer quality over quantity. read more

:( Quality and overall experience has declined drastically since about a year ago when TPumps exploded and became everyone's go-to boba place. When I reviewed the San Mateo location in Jan 2012, it really was my favorite boba place. Great quality tea, boba, and service. Now it unfortunately doesn't live up to its hype. It's shortcomings are mainly due to its rapid growth in popularity and inability to keep up the EXTREMELY high demand, and I can't really blame them for it. It was CRAZY. Like, there was one point when everyone I knew, including people who'd never been to San Mateo, was going from SF to San Mateo TPumps whenever they had the chance. Within a few months (maybe more?), it went from barely anyone knowing about it to lines out the door and 45-minute waits. Then a year later (ish) came the Irving store, where we are now. I'll still go to TPumps, but only when there's no line. The line is no longer worth the wait for me, especially on Irving when there are other boba options. The honey-infused boba is still yummy when the consistency is right. I like getting Peach Green Milk Tea if I do go, though it gets pretty sweet and too milky/watery sometimes. It's kind of a gamble-- there are times you get lucky and are extremely happy with your drink. The giant cans of CoffeeMate powder in plain sight kinda kill it for me though, so I usually just pretend I didn't see it lol. Sad to see TPumps become what it is now. I haven't been to the one in San Mateo in a while, but hopefully it's still better than this one! read more

Tea: I usually go for their Green Or Black Tea mixes. Not a huge fan of their milk teas. I've tried these combos: Lychee and Green Apple. Pomegranate and Lychee. Both solid options for an after meal quench. Pomegranate is really popular. I appreciate that every drink is customized down to the sweetness level but don't go crazy on the flavor combos. Service: usually a huge line outside. Doesn't take too long for each customer. Easy to follow menu. Staff is young and friendly. Get a five star swiper! 10 drinks for a freebie. Atmosphere: Get in, get out. Not much seating. High ceilings create that busy echo feel. Lots of young people. Clean and simple. read more

Dropped by after grabbing some Chinese food for a dessert + sweet pick me up. Girlfriend and I shared a cold almond green tea with no milk, a little sweet. It was actually pretty good. I could definitely taste the almond flavor and it was just the right amount of sweetness I was looking for. I'm giving three stars because of what I saw. All of their milk teas they make with coffee mate creamer. Also, girlfriend came a separate time a couple days later and tried the Taro milk tea. Apparently it was a sickly, artificially pink color and way way too sweet, even though she asked for very little sweetnesses. Driving down the street, this place is hard to miss. It's the shop with lines going out the door! But to be honest, I think there is an overhype of this place. Service - slow and friendly Environment - Clean, organized-ish. Teeny boppers all around (mannnn we felt sooo freakishly old....but then we looked around and saw like 40 year olds so then we felt better since we were then at the middle of the age pack) I saw a dog in here too (random). Anyway, it's funny how large and plain their walls are. There is soo much space to work with. Why don't you put on any art?!?!...or maybe even a most popular drinks list, or pics would be helpful. Nope, the only thing adorning the wall art-wise is a picture of some tea pickers in the fields...it seemed out of place. Even their light bulbs weren't matching. We think you can do much better than that Tpumps! It's a trendy place, so hopefully they'll try to match their interior to that. Drinks - Pluses: You can totally mix your own (up to 3 flavors) and there are soo many options. I guess that's the reason why the line is so long, so you can figure out what the heck you want to order. I changed my mind 3 times by the time I hit the front....and I was super happy with my pick - Strawberry Peach Mango Black Milk Tea with Lychee Popping Boba - SOOO GOOOD!! Cons: Mix up the wrong flavors together and you'll regret it... lol though, they say you can always ask them to remix it for you if you don't like it. One thing: We walked over from Wonderful after ordering a milk tea from there and enjoyed the drink while we waited in line to get a Tpumps drink. Made the wait go faster heheh. For those trying ALL THE BOBA PLACESSS in this vicinity, I recommend just ordering your dranks from other places and just bringing it in here to get your drank on while you wait for more boba. hahahahah soo funny, I'm laughing now (though I am probably just on a major sugar high from eating 3 lollipops) Overall? 3.5 stars (tried their reg boba before and it's really skimpy and sorta hard tasting). The first time I had Tpumps was at it's first location out in San Mateo. After a few months since the SF Tpumps grand opening, I finally got around to standing in line to check out the new location. Tpumps is unique since they allow you customize your drink: - Choose your flavors: Mix up to 3 tea flavors at no additional cost, there is a $1 charge when you mix more than 3 flavors. - Choose your sweetness: Light, Normal, or Extra Sweet - Add Honey Boba, Red Bean, or Taro I ordered the Almond Milk Tea + Mango Black Tea + Honey Boba, it was a pretty good combination, I love the boba!! It's so soft and still a bit chewy, the best I've had in the city. My bf ordered a Strawberry Milk Tea + Honey Black Milk Tea + Honey Boba. Total came out to $5.90, which is not bad for an entirely customized drink. Their service has gotten so much faster!! The only thing I would recommend is getting some air conditioning. The workers look so miserable when they have to work on a hot day, and I'm sure the guests aren't too happy having to wait in a long line in a super stuffy room. Not too shabby. Went here with some friends from SFSU after a day of hanging out in the city a few weeks ago. Pros: + Wide variety of options in terms of flavors and whatnot + Located amongst restaurants, so it's a good place to patronize for a drink after lunch or dinner + Prices not too unreasonable + Good turnaround time Cons: - Very small inside -- not much seating and not much of a waiting area - It can be very difficult to find a parking space on busy days. 4 stars read more

I really don't understand why this place has so much business. It's just tea, high fructose corn syrup, ice and maybe some coffee-mate creamer power creamer (if you want "milk") I really don't understand why they can't use real milk. I'd be willing to pay more if that was the case. I usually get the honey green tea NO SWEET and you know what it tastes like? HONEY with GREEN TEA. HAHA I don't really understand why I go there when I can make a lot of what I want at home. I'm a big believer in eating all natural stuff. I don't like artificial flavoring. Long line. Hot spot...for high school kids and the like! Line loops around inside the store and outside. Even at 3pm on Friday (why aren't these kids in school?? wait, why aren't I at work? hahah) I found out later that they brew the tea fresh so that's why it takes a really long time! We waited for about 30 minutes and got free samples while waiting. Staffs were friendly and good looking. I guess that always helps haha Drinks were good! You can customize the flavor to whatever you wish. I believe you can mix up to 3 tea flavors with no additional cost. You get 1 free add ons and I think it cost extra after that. You can also choose the level of sweetness. I got their taro coconut black milk tea with red beans and boba. The boba was chewy and sweet like honey. The taro coconut milk tea was light. I like! I've been to the San Mateo location in the past but I didn't like it, so I must say I was pleasantly surprised that I liked my drink this time.
