Stopped in for a boba tea and decided to order a super classic Hong Kong style tea with boba. The tea was super strong-the way it should be, and the boba was really nice in that they were soft and chewy and sweet in the best way possible. We really enjoyed their cheese foam for both its texture and flavor. Their drinks themselves are not too sweet and the people were so nice. We got the Hong Kong style milk tea at low sweetness and the matcha with foam also low sweetness. Both with boba. The Hong Kong style milk was over brewed and astringent but the matcha was good and earthy. I would say that their boba was a bit too overcooked. The flavor itself was great and had the right amount of sweetness which complimented getting the drink at a lower sweetness but had a bit too soft texture for our liking. Yes, boba is meant to be chewy and soft but also have a good bounce to it. We came at the time for the buy one get one 50% off (counter only) and the bill was still $16. Edit: Thank you to the owner for responding. In person, both my partner and I were told $16 by the cashier for these two drinks but it may have been a slip of the tongue. TJ Cups used to be a solid spot for boba drinks in the sunset. I was craving milk tea boba today and after going through multiple reviews on Yelp, I decided to go with TJ Cups. There is one huge kiosk machine inside but the worker is still able to help place your order. I got their signature milk tea and added boba balls. First taste and I instantly knew I was not going to finish it because it did not taste as good as before. My husband took one sip and immediately said it tasted bad. We get boba all over the Bay Area, South Bay, and SoCal so I agree that it was definitely an off day! Boba balls were chewy but too soft so it lost its bouncy texture. Tasted like super over-cooked honey boba balls. The milk tea had a weird after-taste. Nothing like what it used to be. I ended up tossing more than half of it away. Total for the drink was $7 but I did not feel like it was worth the calories or cavities. Place still looked very dark and dead inside. The worker seemed nice. I usually like my boba justttt a tad harder but the texture overall was still pretty good, just soft and chewy enough. I got 25% sugar for my drink and it was the perfect amount of sugar with a moderate tea flavor. Prices are a little high but so is everything now...but it didn't have tax and tip when I paid so actually pretty average pricing in the end? They don't have many decaf options for their non slush/smoothie drinks, and only the taro fresh milk and brown sugar milk do not have caffeine. However, it's only an additional $0.50 to substitute soy, almond, or oat milk, which is a great price. I called in my order ahead of time to avoid a wait, and it was less than a 10 minute wait at 1:45pm on a Thursday. You can also place your order online, and it seems like the pricing is the same as in store. It wasn't busy when I arrived, and my order was ready. These drinks are WONDERFUL. I've tried so many boba places since moving to SF in April and I always find myself coming back to TJ Cups. They have an extensive menu of unique drinks and all of the ingredients complement each other well. I love their real taro smoothie with soy milk. I think there's only 1 size for all the slushy/smoothies so make sure you come with a semi-hungry stomach cause the drinks are filling. I couldn't finish the drink in one go. I had to pause after drinking half cup and then finish the rest later... which was still delicious. The boba has the right chewiness and consistency. The owner is so nice and welcoming. I came back to try the avocado honey smoothie but they told me the avocados were not ripe yet so they couldn't make it that day. I like their honesty and how they stand by the quality of their drinks. Make sure you sign up with your phone number to get the stamps. It's 1 stamp per drink. Make sure you double check that! We stop by this boba shop whenever we're in the area because it's one of the few places that makes really good HK style milk tea. I've been here twice now and both times have been a great experience. On my first visit I tried the Dole pineapple freeze with coconut milk. It was super refreshing and the perfect consistency. I also enjoyed the bits of real pineapple. Perfect for a nice sunny day! For my second visit, shoutout to Christine for being super friendly and helpful in crafting my drink. I had been eyeing the Real taro smoothie but wanted to add Oreos blended in (I've had something similar at another cafe and loved it). I noticed Christine was sampling the drink as she was making it to ensure it tasted good which I thought was really going above and beyond so I appreciated that! And it was SO DELICIOUS! Came here for some boba after eating pho next door. Was hoping to order online and run next door to pick it up, but when I went to their website, it tells you to scan the qr code on the website. 6 years later, the genmachia milk tea is still bomb. The grass jelly is still the best I've ever had. I recently tried the pink grapefruit tea that claims to be made with fresh fruit. Yes, there's fresh fruit in it but there's also grapefruit syrup which is what made up the majority of the taste in the drink. You can't taste the tea. There's so little actual fruit that you don't get some in every sip. The fruit tea drinks are like T-Pumps, artificial tasting. I'd only get the genmachia milk tea with grass jelly here. TJ Cups is kind of a hit or miss for me. My order was the Jasmine Green Milk Tea and the Hojicha Milk Tea, both with 50% sweetness and nondairy creamer. The Jasmine milk tea was just ok, I think they do use real tea but either the tea was brewed too long or the mixture just did not add up to my liking (for reference my favorite would be TeaHut's). I thought the Hojicha flavoring was pretty good and actually tasted of Hojicha, compared to others that I have tried. Pricing-wise, I ordered via Uber Eats because I had a discount. In store, most items are at least $5-6 for basic drinks. It doesn't specify if they charge extra for milk alternatives. On UberEats however, they charge $1 for milk options which can put your drink to at least $7 before toppings or other charges. I think the pricing is a bit much for what it is, even though the cups are a little big. Sometimes the place looks pretty empty and other times they can have a line out the door. The service was nice the time that I went. I suggest calling to preorder and pick up just in case. Overall, I think if this is your only option for a milk tea craving, go for it.
