Came here for dinner and a show, the show was late starting. Almost an hour late to start. The service is extremely slow, the only time the waitress came around a lot was to ask if the food was okay. The angus burger was very burnt. You tasted more burnt than burger, it wasn't very good. The atmosphere is nice although it's a little dark in here but it is a nice ambiance. This review does NOT reflect the Server, Musicians and Gregg Graham, Manager last Thursday evening. I stumbled upon this venue last Thursday evening. I am new to Beacon (2 weeks) and couldn't help but hear such great music from the outside. So I went inside sat down, ordered a beer and a snack. The band is amazing! They were also engaging invited us to sing along and back and forth conversation, like what we wanted to hear, where we were from. I was engaging with the band and to another customer. To my suprise the owner, came up to me and told me I was being too loud, that the night was for the band to shine and not me. I apologized and mentioned that I was deaf in one ear and tend to be a little loud without realizing it. So that passed. Then Gregg, the manager came up to me and we started to talk. I was asking him about the band's schedule and letting him know how impressed I was with them. We also discussed some other performances/events as I told him I was alone and needed to get out more. The owner (I never got his name) again came up to us and told me how loud I was and if I wanted to have any further conversations in his place to take it to the bar. It felt as if I were at a performance for the Center of the Arts and not allowed to engage in any conversation. What a bad experience. The owner not only kept asking me to stay quiet but he was so rude and invasive. Not to mention it I had packed my food up to go and never ended up receiving it. A $9 hummus app and I never got to enjoy it. Again Gregg was great, extremely professional in that he accommodated me by answering my questions and made me feel welcomed. Just the opposite of the owner. As a result I would never step foot in that venue again! I honestly felt bad for Gregg because I know right after him talking to me he was being berated for talking to me. Catholic church all over again. If Gregg ever gets a different job, I would highly recommend going to wherever he's at. Attentive, Courteous, Professional and Informative. Thank you Gregg and to the server who's name I never got. To the owner, as I said I will never go back to the Towne Crier Cafe unless I feel the need to be verbally insulted and made to feel less than. Was it my short hair? Was it my tye dye shoes? My mala? Eat before you go. Better yet, here's a money saving tip. Bring your own food. From the time you're seated, it'll be a half an hour before you see a server. The staff are pleasant enough, but all have a stoner attitude, and no ones moving with any enthusiasm. On a positive note, the music is always good here. read more

I've never left a restaurant so soon after being seated before today. My boyfriend and I popped into this place for brunch. They were clearly busy for Father's Day so we knew it wouldn't be the fastest service. My boyfriend was flush and needed a drink of water since it was over 85 degrees out, so after waiting for about 10 minutes (like we actually had enough time to look at the menu and decide what we wanted) with no acknowledgement from the staff, I called a waitress over. I told her we'd been waiting a while and asked her if we could get some water for the table until someone could take our order. I could not believe the attitude she gave me while telling me they serve people in order of being seated and we'll have to wait! I was honestly shocked we couldn't even get water for the table while waiting! The waitress wasnt even apologetic about it and instead she was unnecessarily rude. So we left. We had to stop at a nearby convenience store to get a bottle of water so my boyfriend wouldn't become even more dehydrated. read more

I really liked the Towne Crier when it was in Pawling and I went there to see Graham Parker several years ago. I was really excited when I found out they were moving to Beacon (a little closer to where I live) and even more thrilled to find out that one of the bands I play with had just gotten a gig there. I met the manager who proceeded to give my Wife & I a guided tour of their new space, very cool! The gentleman running the sound was also really friendly, very helpful and professional making the overall experience an absolute joy. The bartender for the evening was also lovely which added to make the overall experience a wonderful one for me. I hope to play there again soon, but I'm also really looking forward to getting back to catch a show! read more

We choose the Town Crier for our wedding rehearsal dinner. Great choice! The owner was very helpful in planning a big event for us. The staff provided phenomenal service and attention. As our only word of caution, be careful with Phil's Baba ghanoush - it's difficult to resist! There was a solid variety of food and drink options, and Phil's wife is a renowned pastry chef. Our guests ranged from late 20s through early 80s and there was something to please everyone. For example, there is a huge painting of Bob Seger on the wall, which our older cousins were nutty about. The "live music" was just an open mic with no practice, and the food was not good. I was not impressed.

For starters we had great service. Our waiter was awkward yet eager and that is why we did not give it one star. We ordered the lamb burger and were surprised that it came out 4 minutes after we ordered it. However it was well done instead of medium rare. When the bartender brought it out we asked him about the spice and he looked confused. As we choked it down a couple walked by with their dogs who were interested in us. The dog walker said "not for you" and my wife and I chimed in "Yes it is". There is a reason why the dining room is empty at 8:30 on a Friday night. Don't be arriving afraid to come here for a concert but wait until they get a decent chef before ordering food. read more

I had my bridal shower at the Towne Crier last weekend. Phil, you outdid yourself! The food was amazing and so was the service. I was able to customize the menu and added a signature fall sangria drink to it too! The restaurant was still open while my shower was going on and I didn't even notice otherwise. We went for the first time last night to see Karla Bonoff and the opening act was Kristen Maxwell. We had a 7pm dinner and show reservation and arrived a few minutes early. There were plenty of good tables left at that time. We were impressed by the intimate atmosphere. The chairs and tables did not seem to be on top of each other as much as they are at similar places. Any seat is a good seat. There are some really interesting wood sculptures on either side of the stage and on the back wall and the owner's good friend created them. There were lots of waiters and other bus boys who were helping with table service. They were all very friendly. We never had an issue getting more water, more napkins, etc. The dinner itself did take a little long to come out, but we were prepared for that. My burger and fries were very good. The fries were crispy and a little spicy and the roll for the burger was very good. I would definitely get that again. My husband had pulled pork and he thought that was good. My carrot cake was very good and my husband thought his white chocolate cheese cake was good. The beers were a little on the warm side, so I would say that is the only thing that could be improved. We paid $35 each for our show tickets and for 2 entrees, 2 desserts and two beers it was $68 plus tip. The show was excellent and the sound was so clear and great and not too loud. Kristen Maxwell was a bonus surprise and was excellent. It is nice that the owner helps new talent. I even bought 2 of her cd's. Her part was very enjoyable and many people in the audience went to buy her cd's and talk with her. I think her part was just the right amount of time. There was an intermission before Karla Bonoff and Nina Gerber came out. The women's rest room just has 2 stalls, but I never saw a line. Karla and Nina were excellent. There was a baby or regular grand piano on the stage that Karla played along with her guitar. The parking lot and entrance to this main stage area are around the back. If you walk around and see all the different sections of the restaurant it is huge. There are lots of signed photos of all kinds of artists that have played there and they are fun to look at. We drove up from NJ and it took about an hour and it was well worth the drive. This place is a great find for good music in the area and we will definitely be back!!! read more

We decided on a drive up to Beacon this Sunday afternoon for a change of pace from Manhattan. We chose Towne Crier Cafe to dine for late lunch. Choosing an outdoor table (as they're dog-friendly & had a bucket of ice water for our pooch). Our sever was an awesome/friendly & knowledgeable individual. We enjoyed cold spirits in the 90 plus degrees & a perfect meal. Had the chance to chat with the owner-Phil Ciganer. What great little gem. They have live music constantly with a good sized stage area inside along with dining tables & bar area. We will definitely be back when in the area! read more

Came here to check out this place for a friend's b-day celebration. When we got here we found out it was open mic night. Thought as long as the music wasn't oppressively loud we could enjoy or meal and drinks and move on. After the first artist and music manager played his first song he decided to call me out for "speaking louder then he was singing" and asked the crowd to quiet down for the following performers. The only words I said were to the drunk hipster who dropped his cash on the floor as he got up to leave. Overall the food was OK, not particularly good. Requests for well done were ignored and we really wanted to leave after the music manager called us out. Service was standard , but wait times were long. My wife and I went for a show. The venue is terrific. There was live music in two rooms. From Main Street you pass through one room where, on Friday night, there was a show which I think was free. Lots of tables and it was well attended. Very nice room, well appointed and decorated. Very comfortable. Where our show was in the back of the building was also nice. It's a comfortable room with tables near the stage and a dance floor. There are tables comfortably spaced at floor level and then a little further from the stage the tables are on a platform so that everyone can see the stage. The show, the band Gratefully Yours, was terrific. People had a blast. The staff was also terrific. The people both at the front door and at the entrance to the separate room where our show was held couldn't be nicer. Our waiter was attentive and professional. My wife and I shared our entrees. I enjoyed the lamb burger which was hot and juicy w good flavor. My Cuban was just ok. I mustn't have been hungry because I didn't finish my half sandwich. My wife's fries were not well done as requested and were not even hot. The brussels sprouts side dish was the poster child for why so many people hate brussels sprouts. I think they were previously frozen. They were mushy, tasted awful, drenched in a bath of butter and under cooked chopped garlic. The garlic clearly came chopped from a jar. Yuck! Aside from the uneven experience out of the kitchen, we had a really nice evening. The crowd was friendly and had a good time. I'd like to get to Beacon a little earlier next time to explore the town a little bit. Main street seems to be undergoing some kind of revival. read more

Beware of the other reviews on here!! The service is terrible and the food is even worse. We went last night for dinner and ordered around 7:15 after we flagged our waiter (Maxwell) down. He brought us our drinks and he didn't stop by our table again. Why does water seem to be so scarce at this place? At 7:50 we finally flagged him down as other tables had been seated, their food eaten and checks paid. He told us that he had forgotten to put in our order, but it shouldn't be too much longer. There was no apology or offer to make anything better. We asked for silverware and water (again) as almost an hour into this torture we still had received neither. When the food finally came it was tasteless and just short of inedible. The french cut chicken was bland, unsalted and as you can see, an unpleasant flesh color. I guarantee you the "pan seared" portion of their menu is false advertising! The pancetta in the hash was undercooked bacon. LikeI said, beware of the other reviews of the bad food. Anyway, we wait a few minutes and my buddy flags down a passing waiter. "Can we order a couple of beers?" Reply "This is not my station. Hasn't anyone been here yet?" If someone was here, would be flagging down a random waiter? Experience says NO. Anyway, he takes our order and proceeds to become our server for the night. Came to the Towne Crier to see Carbon Leaf who were playing that night. It's a very nice place to see a show. The Show entrance is around the back where there is off street parking. My wife and I were about 30 minutes early for our reservation so they asked us to wait in the Cafe and Bar. Guinness was giving out free Guinness Blonde pints and we got some free beer, which started off the evening well.We poured over the menu before going in to be seated. this was a good thing because the section of seating where the show was to take place was too dark to see the menu. We shared the meat and cheese board, good. And we both ordered the Broccoli Rabe and sausage, which was excellent. After dinner and as the show began we ordered the hummus plate. A huge bowl of hummus with only four pita chips. The hummus was awesome. I wanted more, but short of simply spooning it directly into my mouth we ended up not eating most of it and that was after we'd ordered more pita. Town crier is very nicely decorated and has great atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and most importantly the food was delicious! I came in with a group of friends and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I ordered the Mediterranean Lamb Burger with fries. The fries were amazing and were very well spiced. I couldn't be happier with my experience at the new Town Crier. This venerable music destination is an upgrade from the old Pawling location. The owner has been around the block and manages to book mainstream and under the radar musical acts. The music is worth a visit alone! If the music isn't enough to captivate you then the food will. There is something on the menu for everyone! The portions are big but save room for dessert because the cakes are some of the best in the Hudson Valley. For starters try the sour lemon pound cake. Service was spot on as well. I for one will be making a trip up from Brooklyn many times over. read more

I ordered a burger medium-well and a few bites in I realized there was red blood all over my plate. It was just booked potatoes, canned corn and I couldn't find any hash. My gf who generally likes everything and never has any complaints said " I wouldn't order this again" about her vegetation dish and I can assure you that translates to "this is terrible". Extremely disappointing food, particularly the curry lamb stew. Meat was very tough, with half of the thinly sliced pieces burnt. There was no sign of a stew - the meat was probably pre-cooked and re-heated in a toaster oven. My wife and I love the Towne Crier for both the food and the music. Phil, the owner, is a good man with a long history in the business and his passion runs through the place. The staff has always been attentive and helpful when we go there, and the attention and care are clearly part of the service culture at the Towne Crier. It is a great sounding club too, with multiple layouts for different size events. There is a soundproof wall that allows flexibility to make the club never seem too big or too small for what is happening. I have had as much of a blast at an intimate open mic night as I have at packed shows with national acts. When we were trying to decide where to have our wedding reception, we looked at the upscale choices and the DIY possibilities but we both are thrilled in retrospect that we chose to have our afternoon reception at the Towne Crier. Phil and his staff took the whole venue and arranged it beautifully for our event. Light shone through the windows, the delightful artwork on the walls runs deep with musical themes, and the flow of the space was fantastic. They put on a great buffet of fresh, vibrant food that we collaborated with Phil and his chef to design. It was a lovely event that got us started on an awesome foot and garnered rave reviews from more than 100 family and friends. We keep going back for a bite to eat, with or without music on our minds, and whether it's a burger and a coke or a serious entree like the wild boar bolognese, I have generally been thrilled. That said, the desserts are my favorite! The chocolate truffle torte at the Crier is on my short list of the best things in Beacon. read more

I grabbed a bite with a friend at the Town Crier tonight. It's a Sunday evening and we sat at the bar while there was pretty full dining room. The bartender was great, and the service from other staff was efficient when he was busy. Food: I had the grilled cheese with tomato bisque, she just had the bisque. We both agreed the soup was good, but VERY strongly flavored. I ended up bringing the soup home and added water to it to try to bring the intense flavor down. Great taste and texture though! I finished the grilled cheese with no complaints, although there was a little too much cheese that got hard as it chilled during the meal. Bar: There was a large selection of craft beers, liquids, and wines. I had the Pear Cider which I LOVED. She had the Spiked Grapefruit seltzer which was surprisingly tasty and smooth. Overall: The atmosphere was relaxing. I would love to see what's it's like on one of their entertainment nights. There is a large back room with a stage that was empty tonight. I would return for another bite, although I wish their selection of food options were a bit broader, and the entree's are a little pricey for a casual bite to eat. read more

Short Story: Your money and time could be better spent than onthis glorified, jazz-themed Friendly's. You'll be the only one "Crying" here. Long Story: My friends and i from out of town decided to head up to Beacon for the Sunday's Farmer's Market. We arrived at the Towne Crier at 1:30 pm and did not receive our meals until 2:25. Our service was cripplingly slow and nearly all seven of our orders were incorrect and woefully inadequate. My "medium" burger crumbled as if it were composed of an amalgamation of paper mache and sand. Our server did not apologize, refill our water until prompted, or offer her apologies for the substandard service. My wife's veggie burger was a mooshy patty with the consistency of day-old grool. The soft taco shells were impossibly brittle and flaked off if one attempted to fold them (not what one expects from a handheld meal! ) The fries were akin to the Ore Ida variety at a temperature that could be only be reproduced had I left them on the counter for an afternoon. No beverage was refilled which left us all parched and uncomfortable. If you value your time and dollar, avoid the Towne Crier. Ps. The curry hash was good. read more

My husband and I were in the area and looking for a place to stop in for lunch with our kids. Since we've been here before for drinks we chose this place despite the high prices for basic menu items. We both ordered the hamburger ($17) plus cheddar cheese ($2) and asked for it to be cooked medium. $19 for a cheeseburger and fries is more than what is charged even in the Westchester and NYC areas which is where we're used to eating. The only time I've paid this much for a burger is in high end steakhouses but the description appeared that it was high quality meat so we were willing to pay for an enjoyable meal. When we received the food the burgers were well done and very dry. Totally disappointing! I would have let it go if it were just a $10 burger and just not returned but for $19 I made it a point to let the waitress know that the burgers were over cooked after we requested medium. She wasn't apologetic but asked if we wanted them remade but I told her I couldn't wait since we had young kids with us, but I wanted to let her know. She said ok, then walked away. When it was time to bring the check there was no apology, no discount, no dessert on the house or anything to make up for the fact that we just paid $38 to what tasted like frozen burgers from the supermarket. If a restaurant has the nerve to charge these prices they better have the quality of food to justify it and the service to go with it. Just to note, the place was empty except for maybe 2 other tables so there was no excuse that it was busy. read more
