Located in the heart of downtown Gilbert, I stopped by for dessert with my mom on a Saturday night around 8:30 p.m. At that time, there was a line close to 30 people or so deep. Ambiance (4/5): Located next to a BBQ joint (which is owned by the same people), this little store has a window for takeout where you place your order, pay, and get your food. With that being said, there's plenty of room to linger in the spacious outdoor patio behind Topo. Including rocking chairs. And there are also some benches right next to Topo. Above Topo is a large beaver that's part of the building. It definitely stands out with some pretty cool architecture! Service (3/5): Since you order and pay at the counter, service isn't a big part of the experience. But the line sure is! It goes fast, but it still took 20 minutes or so to get an ice cream. Only one person works the counter which slows things down. With two or three people working cash registers, the line wouldn't exist. It's a good spot but there's some artificial hype here that could be avoided. Drinks (N/A): I didn't order any beverages but I was tempted to try their watermelon agua fresca. Food (5/5): Topo is known for their prickly pear soft serve ice cream. And outside of that, you don't have a lot of choices when it comes to ice cream. You can do vanilla, prickly pear, or combo in a cone or cup. You can also add a chocolate shell for $1 extra. And they also had a seasonal option with mango and tajin. If you're not looking for dessert, they have a limited selection of hot food too including elote, brisket elote, and burritos. Now let's get back to the ice cream. I went with the combo and the prickly pear and vanilla soft serve complemented each other so well. This was my first time trying prickly pear ice cream. Up until this point, the closest I got was prickly pear margaritas. They're most definitely an Arizona/New Mexico thing so I appreciated the novelty of it. They're known for their burritos - Topo Locos chicken or pork burrito ($11 + $2 for brisket upgrade). Elotes with brisket, and their soft serve. But since I was visiting, all the locals pointed me to the prickly pear soft serve dipped in chocolate and man was that divine. It is refreshingly delicious and only for $5.50. I finally decided to give it a shot and ordered the brisket elote and the Tapo burrito with pork. Honestly, I'm not sure what the hype is about. The brisket elote was $13 and was basically Frito chips with very little meat. For the price, I expected much more substance. The Tapo burrito was $11 and was mostly beans. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough protein in either the burrito or the brisket elote to justify the cost. I'm pretty disappointed and, unfortunately, won't be back. read more

Came for the prickly pear ice cream & it did not disappoint! I generally love picking up prickly pear flavored treats, so when I saw they had ice cream I knew I had to stop by. We swung by on a Saturday after grabbing dinner somewhere else, there was a line out front, however it moved quickly. Our party tried the brownie sundae, the prickly pear ice cream with chocolate dip & a prickly pear ice cream with orange dip. Plus, a family member ordered a burrito for later and I grabbed one of the new watermelon aqua frescas they were promoting. The prickly pear ice cream dipped in chocolate reminded me of the chocolate covered cherries that are popular during the holiday season. I thought it was delicious & I was happy with the amount they give you for the price, some ice cream spots over charge & give you the smallest portion. Everyone really enjoyed their ice cream, and it was nice there was seating right next to their stand. The only thing I didn't like was the watermelon drink I had ordered, it didn't taste quite right instead of the sweet watermelon flavor I was expecting it tasted more like the rind had been blended up & added to the drink giving it a bitter taste. Stopped at Topo for dessert after a great dinner at Joe's Real BBQ next door. The line was long, but the wait wasn't too bad. The cashier/server moved very quickly and efficiently. Their current special cone is called "Joy to the World" - looks like a dipped cone with crushed peppermint. I went with the Prickly Pear Twist soft serve in a cup. It was so good! Tastes almost like my favorite ice cream growing up, raspberry vanilla swirl, but not tart. The texture was smooth and creamy. Don't be deterred by the long line - it's honestly worth the wait! I have passed this place so many times, and almost always see a line of people here. The line moves very quickly, so that's a plus. Luckily there is plenty of seating all around Topo, especially since it is a small stand-alone place. My family and I came here to try the soft serve, which unfortunately is only offered in two flavors: vanilla and prickly pear (or a twist of both). Dip options include chocolate, lime, and prickly pear, but a seasonal flavor of Oreo mint was available. I opted for the Oreo mint, and although the dip coating was good, it really wasn't worth the mess. A bowl would be a better option! I personally prefer Dairy Queen vanilla soft serve over this one. It was a relatively large serving and a decent price, but the flavor options just weren't doing it for me. This made me wonder if it's the few food items available that keep the people coming back. So take a look and decide for yourself -- is this purely an opportunity to capitalize on a busy area by offering mediocre ice cream at a high price, similar to a tourist trap, or is it a genuine effort to give back? Unfortunately, we ended up peeling off the dip--neither of us were fans of the flavor. That said, the prickly pear ice cream was delicious and definitely the standout. The service was friendly and fast, which made the experience even better. You can't eat inside, but there's plenty of spots to sit nearby outside. If we go back (and we probably will), we'll skip the dip and the twist and just get a cone of prickly pear on its own. Sometimes simple is best! read more

We looked for a house here in September, and under recommendation from our daughter, she suggested Topo. Well, in September it was over 100 degrees for a month, so we decided not to visit Topo at that time, because you order outside and you eat outside. Now that we've been here a while (and the weather has calmed a little) we decided to give it a try, and it was worth it! We both got the chicken Topo Loco and the food was amazing. It had just the right amount of spice, and crunch from the Fritos. The elote adds a good amount of sweetness to the burritos. For desert, the wife got a prickly pear twist cone with lime dip. If you haven't tried it, you've got to. I got the bacon caramel sundae and if you've ever had the bacon Sundae from Burger King when they had it, you'll appreciate this version! Our order was quick, and correct. So there was no problem there. The outdoor seating is picnic benches and it gives that picnic feel. There are cornhole games you can play while you wait, and if it gets cold at night, there's outdoor heaters in the seating area. Lots of people watching you can do as well, it's a pretty vibrant downtown area, and looks like it could get crowded at times. My visits have been average. I visited 3 times in hope for a different outcome and I finally landed on a rating of 3. Not a must visit but you may very well enjoy your visit. Solely based on the ice cream. When I first came to visit I made the mistake of going out on a Friday evening, maybe 7. It was extremely packed with parking nearly non existent (parking garage completely full). After finally finding parking, waited in line (10-15 ppl), took some time, only to find out the prickly pear was out of service So I settled on chocolate dipped vanilla. It was okay. McDonald soft serve is a lot better and cheaper. This runs you just under 6$ Came back again, after reading reviews I decided on a chocolate dipped prickly pear. I didn't care for the combo. Prickly pear really doesn't have a stand out flavor, it's just slightly tart. So I didn't like the tart plus chocolate. Came back again in the after noon mid week, barely a wait.. and thought the orange dipped prickly pear would be a good combo. It was a bit better but again, nothing special. The orange dip also wasn't pleasant. I can't figure out how to describe it but it got stuck to the roof of my mouth and would get clumpy in my mouth. Nothing was too sweet, so I appreciated that aspect. The little guy on the roof is fun and creepy lol. It's a simple little walk up shack. Employees have been nice. Overall wouldn't go out of my way to visit but if I was with someone that wanted to try I would order myself something. read more

While visiting with friends, I mentioned I was interested in Prickly Pear Ice Cream while in AZ. Do they recommend or know of any place? He said, "Oh, check out Topo. They have Prickly Pear soft serve Ice Cream and other Mexican food there." SOLD! Topo is located in Gilbert's Downtown Heritage District. A very popular area. There is a parking lot around the corner, shared with all the other businesses. Basically, it's in the back. Cute brick-and-mortar "stand" with a nice outdoor fenced patio area. They offer games of cornhole toss. The area has string lights and is clean. They also have additional tables and seating to the right of the stand. Thankfully, the line wasn't too long. The wait was about 10-12 minutes. The workers are excellent at quickly serving their patrons. Decisions...decisions...swirl of Prickly Pear with Vanilla, then dipped in Prickly Pear or Lime dip. I decided I might as well go with the full Prickly Pear Ice Cream with the Lime dip. The lime dip was a nice thick shell easily broken when you bit into it. Creamy and chocolately with a hint of lime. That in itself was delicious. [The temperature that night was in the high 90s] So that shell kept your ice cream from melting too fast! Otherwise, you would have a dripping mess, or you would have to scarf down your ice cream and couldn't enjoy it. We've all done that before, right? The flavor of the ice cream was sweet yet slightly tart and refreshing! Without the dip, it's a nice ice cream. With the dip, that elevates it to a decadent dessert. Too bad, I don't live here. My husband and I move around and Topo's will be a spot I will truly miss when we move on from AZ. This cute hole-in-the-wall spot in DT Gilbert is a spot I go out of my way to return to. They have a small limited menu but what they do amazingly well!! I always order a brisket topo loco, elote and prickly pear ice cream with a lime topping. Their meat is sourced from Joe's Real BBQ next door and it is DELICIOUS. I'm not typically one for bbq takes on Mexican food but Topo does it really well. The serving sizes are huge and I never have to wait long for my food. The only thing to keep in mind is that Topo does not offer indoor seating so the summer months can making dining difficult. I recommend finding shade in Joe's patio next door, going after sun set or planning to eat in the car for those who are heat sensitive. Overall, highly recommend. read more

How did I just find out about this place? Nestled next to Joes BBQ in downtown Gilbert, is a giant beaver with glowing eyes. Not sure how the animal relates to the food, but this place is unique and serves some delicious quick Mexican food and soft serve. I tried the classic elote-corn, cheese, and a white sauce with a kick of spice. This Gringa loved it. Next, I tried the vanilla/prickly pear swirl soft serve. It reminded me of the lifesavers berries and cream candy of my childhood. So good! Our friends got the prickly pear with lime hard shell on top, reminiscent of rainbow sherbet. They also got a brisket and elote burrito, which looked amazing. This is a walk up restaurant without indoor seating-but you can sit in Joes next door, which is perfect. Can't wait to go back.
