Top Pot is an extremely solid neighborhood donut option. There are multiple locations all over Seattle (and some suburbs too), but this one is the closest to my apartment. After walking 10 minutes (hey, I have to earn my sugary, fried dough calories), I wind up with a delicious donut and a hot mug of coffee in my hand. I'm definitely okay with this setup. The maple-glazed chocolate cake donut is my favorite of all the ones I've tried, although I'm also a sucker for the donuts with salted caramel glaze. My SO always opts for the Bavarian cream donut. The coffee is also good stuff, and comes out piping hot. If you're feeling indulgent, give the mocha a try: it truly is like a dessert drink. The staff here is always polite and prompt, and I've never had a rude interaction. I also love the library-style interiors this outlet has--the store feels really cozy as a result. I am also secretly glad (for my waistline) that I didn't live near a library-themed donut shop with free wifi while I was a college student. I don't get it - what's the big deal about this place? If you like heavily fried, cake-like donuts, then I guess Top Pot's may be better than average. This morning we tried a chocolate with coconut (quite good), one with just chocolate (okay), and one just cake (not good). I had a coffee too, which was fine but nothing special. I guess this place's main attribute is that it is the only coffee shop in it's immediate vicinity, which means it has a pretty dedicated group of regulars from the neighborhood. Try a raspberry-glazed chocolate doughnut or a chocolate-covered old-fashioned, all baked fresh (they're even warm sometimes). Top Pot is an OK donut place, a decent coffee place, and an OK place to meet people for coffee. Although I like to meet with people here (coffee is good, donut option, not skanky decor), it is actually hit and miss. The laptop campers take over most of the inside nearly all day. If you don't mind the cold (or you smoke) you can almost always find a table outside. The coffee is good. It's got a sweet taste, and the baristas are consistent. I live in the neighborhood, so I drink quite a bit of their coffee. Rave reviews aside, the donuts are just not that stellar. The apple fritter is OK, the crullers are all right, but the old fashioned could use more buttermilk, the stuffed donuts could use a more even distribution of filling, and the frostings are all a tad overpowered for my taste. They also seem a bit greasy. I've had much better at non-hipster donut shops, but those sadly seem to be disappearing in Seattle, just like diners and cheap rent. Decided to drop by when I saw it walking around Seattle. I was excited because heck, I love donuts and for some reason I've been having a craving almost on a daily basis. The service was fantastic. The moment you walk in you get a smile, you're greeted, you feel welcomed. The atmosphere is awesome - books on the wall, plenty of seating, warm ambience. I would definitely come back without a doubt to work or study. It's the perfect place! I didn't relax there though. I got a glazed applesauce cake donut and continued on my way. Doughnuts were the style that's more like a cake so I feel like they should be more appropriately named "cake with a whole". I bought an assorted 6 box and tried a bunch of different flavours, the only one I felt was an actual doughnut was the original glaze (not the old fashiomed) the rest are mini cakes. Pros: The donut shop is a fantastic place to relax on the weekend. The atmosphere is very cozy and it's quiet enough to catch up with friends. Their lattes are delicious and are just bitter enough to compliment sweet donuts. Raspberry and Cinnamon flavored things (my two favorite flavors!) old fashioned donuts. They actually taste like the donuts my dad used to make on the weekend except better because it's slathered in raspberry sauce. Cons: Long lines loooooong wait for coffee Pretty expensive donuts and coffee Yeast raised donuts taste stale. While the old fashioned tasted like it'd been made 5 seconds ago by my dad, the yeast tasted like the ones you find in a safeway pastry counter that are at least a few days old, which made me sad because I love cinnamon. So I'll start this by saying that I don't really like donuts. I know I'm weird and probably shouldn't even be reviewing this place. However, I have an obligation to report on the tea so here I am. In regards to donuts though, I will say that the first time we went here we were trying to buy a dozen for some reason... and they only had two donuts in the case. I mean seriously... it was Saturday morning and only two donuts? Strange. Anyway, on to the point. I like the location of this Top Pot and I would definitely not mind hanging out here with my laptop. It's nice that they have the outdoor tables pretty much year round, because even if it is cold out we still like to sit outside if it is sunny. Unfortunately, Top Pot cannot make a decent chai. They advertise that they use Morning Glory chai... which I generally like. But somehow their version comes out flavorless. I don't get it. I really want to love Top Pot.....truly I do. But, the hard truth that I came to after trying the fabled donuts is that, well, I've had better. I know I may sound blasphemous to some by that remark, but I too was shocked when coming to that realization. This is not to say that the donuts aren't good, because they are. It's just that there was so much hype built up that they just couldn't live up to. I went in and grabbed a standard glazed, Bavarian cream and raspberry glazed as a good spread for my first try. All of them were huge and well adorned with their respective toppings. But, this was not enough to save me from the surprisingly dry, empty taste of the dough. I know that this is at least partially due to the length of time they must have been sitting out since I went in around noon. Still, the donuts were dry and the dough was bland enough to make me dunk them in milk in order to finish them off. One thing that really impressed me was the atmosphere of the place. It has high ceilings and enough seating to give a surprisingly spacious feel. On top of that, the guy behind the glass was really helpful and friendly. I liked Top Pot well enough that I don't regret trying them, but not enough to make a trip back. If the dough was softer and not so heavy, I might like them more. Whenever it's overcast or rainy, I find myself finishing off entire bags of peanut M&Ms (which I don't even like under ordinary circumstances) and fantasizing about cheesecake. Accordingly, when I recently found myself in gloomy, overcast Seattle for a few days, I headed to Top Pot Donuts for my gloomy-weather-sugar-fix. The bavarian cream donut with chocolate glaze ($2.29) that I got was absolutely delicious - a lot of times, creme-filled donuts are dense, sugary, and greasy - but Top Pot's version had the perfect consistency, wasn't overly sweet, and the cream was quite flavorful and creamy instead of greasy. I also got a raspberry-chocolate cake donut ($0.99), which was pretty good. And the drip coffee ($1.55) was surprisingly quite drinkable - smooth and mild, it didn't even need to be "enhanced" with copious amounts of creme or sugar! So Top Pot definitely gets my seal of approval as a great spot for a hearty gloomy-weather-sugar-fix (or "kaffee und kuchen," as my mom would say). read more

The donuts are diverse, attractive, and pretty tasty without the severe sugar buzz that some other doughnutiers (is that a word?) give me, but I don't think they're exactly health food either. To be fair, I have not sampled the majesty that is these donuts on the whole. I did pick at a cake donut that was already vivisected on the table and found it to be a dense cake that was more like a loaf of bread with chocolate on it. The scrying into the innards of the donut told me nothing other than I didn't want another piece. Maybe it was old. I did notice that the guys in the back were making donuts after midnight. Unless they were being made for the nocturnal elves that clean the place at night, I'm assuming that one of those morning people at 6am in a local coffee place already has laid their mits on a 6+ hour old donut. When I first went to Top Pot I thought it was okay. Their doughnuts were fine, their coffee was good, but I would never have used adjectives like "incredible," "awesome," or "border-line orgasmic." For a while I lived pretty close to Top-Pot so I would frequent it. I'd get a chocolate-on-chocolate donut and a double-shot latte. Then one day with a friend I mentioned that on T.V. shows people would dip their doughnuts into their coffee, I always thought it was one of those cliche'd things you saw on T.V. but no one actually practiced and so I did it as a joke. Little did I know that would unlock the key to a delicious doughnut! The coffee and the doughnut together became the new peanut-butter and jelly for me. Yet... Call me a purist, but I feel as though a doughnut shouldn't have to be dipped in coffee to be great, it should be good on it's own. However, unlike lots of things in Seattle, the price is right, for all it's hype there are no long lines, and it has a good atmosphere (I like pulling down the old books the decorate the place with and thumbing threw them).
