Old school American Italian at its finest. If you want that 1930's vibe with white tablecloths, with familiar dishes, well dressed waiters, and the standards playing before you as you sip wine and munch on fried calamari, this is for you. The free bread and arancini (rice ball) are a big reason for this generous review. The food is good too, but fairly expensive, which is why I am restraining myself than going any further than I am. The feel of the restaurant is a little stuffy. It is not necessarily a bad thing, as a casual Italian restaurant never hurt anybody. But something here made me feel out of place, even though the staff is friendly and the food comes out quickly. Depending on what you get can also rack things up quickly. I noticed that with me just ordering one item, the Papardelle. Again, I liked the food, but the prices gave me some sticker shock and the experience felt quite rigid at times. Down 18th Ave from this restaurant are two other Italian restaurants that I endorse, Il Colosseo and Villa Fiorita. Both have great food too, but less of a stuffy atmosphere. Having long been patrons of the original Tommaso's, we could not be more thrilled with what Luis and Anthony have created here on 18th Ave. They continue to stay true to their roots with the original flavors and decor. The back room tapestry remains on the wall, across from Tommaso's ladle and they continue to serve the standard round of rice balls. The menu remains as delicious as any in Brooklyn, especially the delicious Fettuccine with Wild Boar. The service is beyond exceptional, with our waiter often arriving with just what we were looking for before we even thought to ask for it. Having arrived for a Sunday lunch, we ended staying over 2 hours enjoying the atmosphere when Luis surprised us with a round of White Cloud cocktails as heavenly as their name. We could not recommend Tommaso any higher and cannot wait to return soon! read more

Came here for the first time for my best friends baby shower, although the space is small it adds to the endearing homey vibe you want from a restaurant. Service was top notch from the beginning to the end. Food was served family style for this private event which allowed everyone to try a little bit of everything. For entrees we were given the option of a fish, chicken and meat dish (not pictured veal rollatini) everyone also got an option of a pasta dish. Very friendly, very accommodating and excellent service. The service went above and beyond. To be fair due to the nature of the event, the fit was the last thing on our mind. I previously went to the former Tomasso restaurant on 86th years ago and was excited to see it open on 18th. We were quickly seated but the setting was not clean. My plate, upon sitting down, I found covered in oil. This was also a problem regarding the napkin as it was placed directly on the plate. I quickly asked to have it replaced but the server was overwhelmed at the moment as they brought bread to our table. I did not ask to have the napkin replaced as I wasn't intending on eating more than an appetizer. Bread was okay and butter was brought on a plate. There was no salt or pepper on the table which is fine given we were seated at a smaller table. We ordered our food and waited for it to come out. As we waited, someone next to us dropped a heavy glass cup. This was by far the most delayed response to broken glass I have experienced in a restaurant. The glass shattered very loudly and not one of the at least 4 servers working responded. After about a minute of staring down the glass and eyeing wait staff, we stopped one server and informed them of the glass. Again, it was not our glass but glass from another table. As there was so much glass on the floor, the guests at the table could not safetly get up. Even when they did come with a broom to sweep it up, there was still large shards of glass left behind as the staff did not manage to clear it all up. One server collected our dishes when finished with our main hot food of the night but they didn't realize we were waiting on our dessert. It was after about 5 or so minutes of having paid the check before the meal ended that we were still waiting on dessert. I'd like to say the food was good enough to come back but I really felt the experience was below what I'd expect from a seasoned restaurant team. It is clear they need to better attend to guests and take time to structure the space better to avoid overwhelming the staff. Not everyone we met that did work there was overwhelmed in that hour instance but I could tell they were frazzled. I was really unhappy about the plate situation at the start and felt that was something the kitchen staff had to take care of first but the waiters should have noticed that as they set the table and they hadn't. I don't think I'd return to the restaurant but may in the cooler months if friends would ask to. I recommend other neighborhood spots rather than risk disappointment here for a special night out. read more

Had dinner here last night (not my first time) - been there when I throw events and for casual dining as well - I have never been disappointed. The appetizers alone are worth coming for - but then here come the entrees...no reason to stop eating now! Love they do Spaghetti Carbonara properly (not with cream)- I had the sole oreganata last night - and it was delish. Seriously - never had a bad dish. I ordered veal Marsala which is how I judge Italian restaurants. The sauce was pure water and the veal was very tough. Prices were reasonable but you get what you pay for. If you want great veal I would go to Matteo's in queens. Unfortunately the singer did not add to the dining experience as well. read more

Cute little Italian restaurant in Brooklyn. We made a reservation and were seated and serviced quickly. The server took our drink order and we soon had most delicious fresh bread and rice balls (complementary) on our table. I had the eggplant Parmesan, my husband had the gnocchi and my son had chicken Parmesan. All 3 were very good and this Italian family is hard to please. I have been going to this restaurant since they moved to 86th Street. The owners are nice, very accommodating, and the food is great. The menu is constantly evolving, and there is musical entertainment with their frequent singer who has become a good friend of ours. I highly recommend this restaurant. I post more often to Google reviews, so am copying the same review here: Absolutely incredible dining experience. This gem is apparently a transplant of a prior location, but carries with it a series of traditions and recipes that delighted the taste buds of our group of 10. The service was attentive and answered questions about the cuisine, guiding us across a series of Italian classics and family-owned recipes. The food was amazing. Our table had a splash of assorted classics, from a massive, juicy Chicken Parm to flavorful Salmon to succulent pork chops with spicy peppers in brown sauce (pictured). Our entire party loved our meal and the entire experience was hugely positive. On Saturday night there was also live music, which set a fantastic backdrop for our dining experience (without being too loud - just right). Everything was perfect. The food was very flavorful and the portions were kind. We were serenaded and catered to like we were the only people seated. We weren't, the place was hopping and everyone was having a wonderful time. The atmosphere was amazing, we were very comfortable with the seating arrangements. It's on rare occasions that I will take the time to leave a review. After having dinner with my family last night at Tomasso, I feel obligated to share my experience. Let me just dive right in and tell you that my dinner was plain disgusting! I ordered a simple main course of Pasta Pesto, a dish that is simple to prepare and almost impossible to screw up. First, my dinner arrived lukewarm in a restaurant that was half empty at the time. The pesto sauce was poured over the pasta with no regard for its presentation, neatness, or the appropriate amount. It was as if someone opened up a Carvel machine and splattered Pesto sauce all over my pasta. That's how much was on my plate. The Pesto had no flavor to it whatsoever. No garlic, no sharp Romano cheese, no salt, no pepper. Just a ton of pesto drenched in cheap oil (not olive). When I took a forkful of spaghetti, the oil would drip off the pasta and pool at the bottom of my bowl. The grated cheese, which was on the table, was flavorless and most likely purchased in bulk at Cosco or BJ's. How any restaurant would serve such a disgusting dish to its customers is beyond my comprehension. My suggestion would be to cook at home or find another place to eat because I don't believe you will have a good experience here. And try not to acknowledge all the 5-star reviews. Went yesterday with my husband I was extremely disappointed the sauce was horrible it was a brown and the meatballs were horrible as well you can tell they are not homemade didn't even taste like meat. Tasted like them came frozen from costco or BJ's. I was born and raised in Brooklyn in Italian household this was not good Italian food . I have lived a few blocks from Tommaso for a long time but never ventured in and with my co-worker and I going on a restaurant tour of ny we decided to put it on the list and im glad i did. Charming decor and very attentive service . For starters I went with my stand by Baked Clams and these were a great version. The breadcrumbs were toasted perfectly and the clams were plump and juicy and not at all chewy. For my main I got Italian sausage and broccolirabe. The sausages were good but just a bit dry and the Rabe was also good. Not tough as it sometimes can be and very garlicky. My co-worker got Chicken Parmigiana and I tried some and it was a very good version of this Italian American standard. The breading was light and the sauce was quite good. Finished it off with a solid Cappucino and my childhood fave Tortoni. We left saying yeah this place will now be on our return list. read more

Came here with my mom, cousin and aunt. We each ordered the from the prefixe menu which was totally worth it and filling! We even got small rice balls and a garlic onion bread on the house! The food was delicious! I had pasta, filet francese and ice cream. The bread came out warm as an appetizer. There weren't many people at the restaurant, the service was good. My wife and I went to Tommaso's with a large group recently. We ordered apps for the table, so we wound up sampling a bunch of different items and all were great. Cheeses and meats were super fresh, fish dishes were delicious and also incredibly fresh. Everyone loved their main courses; I had veal, my wife had Salmon, a lot of home made pastas across the table as well. Our waiter was super attentive without being overbearing; drinks (they have a bar too) were great. The atmosphere was like a holiday dinner with family. They had a singer (we went on a Saturday) who was really fun and the whorestaurant sung a couple of songs with him all together, it was not obnoxious, just very organic because everyone felt so comfortable and was having so much fun. This is a little gem; throw back to amazing food, very fair prices, and a true Italian friendly atmosphere. We already made plans with another group to go back. Hadn't been back to Tommaso's in awhile and we were impressed with Lou and the staff that have taken control of the restaurant since the passing of the owner Tommaso. They are keeping the memory alive and I'm sure he is smiling down on their strength. The food was just the way we remembered it and very appealing. My first time visiting Tommaso's in about three years. I was a regular there once upon a time, but I needed new scenery so I moved on. I was in Dyker Heights to look at the lights and dropped in for a bite. Things are not quite the same since Tom passed away. Tom was an eccentric man, but very likable. If you are going don't expect great food. Tommaso's kitchen is mediocre at best, order simply and go with low expectation's. There are two reason's to visit. Reason number one is the extraordinary wine list, and reason number two is live opera. I found a 2001 Chateau Pontet-Canet on the list for only $100. The evening's featured opera singer was pretty good too. I will also mention that there are occasional "characters" dining in Tommaso's. They mind their own business and so do I. read more

Soup was cold, lamb was served sloppy. Poor presentation. Not enough quality or value for the price we paid. Service is a 2 out of 10. Not a top notch experience by any stretch of the imagination. But they've been there a long time. Do yourself a favor. There's a lot of other Italiano ristorante in NY. This one is one to pass on. read more
