I've come in here for pasta before, but this time wanted to try their prepared foods. I ordered eggplant rolatini, a spinach roll (which is spinach wrapped in breaded manicotti), and believe it or not, their gelato. The prepared food was delicious! But the standout was that darn gelato. Who knew a pasta store would carry such amazing hazelnut gelato! The flavor is called "Bacio", which is chocolate & hazelnut but has these crispy pieces that taste like Ferraro Rocher wafers. Run to try this gelato!!! It is incredible, and dare I say, I enjoyed it even more than Villabate's. Sacrilegious, I know. I know I'm going to get crap for this review but I'm just going to be honest. I'm born and raised in Brooklyn and I come from an Italian descent and I know good pasta, shells, manicotti, and sadly this was the most unexpected disappointment I have ever had with a real old school Italian American place. I really thought their pasta and manicotti were going to be phenomenal but every single thing that I purchased was completely tasteless and I wasn't the only one that said it. My entire family agreed. The manicotti literally had no taste whatsoever, the basil pesto pasta was bland as can be, the cavatelli was completely tasteless and the only thing that even tasted remotely decent was there potato gnocchi. Their sauces however are pretty damn good. Their chicken cutlets went right into the garbage immediately because they were tasteless and dry as can be and their chicken soup was extremely disappointing as well. I don't know what happened to this place but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. read more

I brought a box of their frozen lobster raviolis and cheese raviolis from Brooklyn to my parents in southern California. I wasn't sure what to expect because I've had other frozen raviolis from the supermarket and they tasted processed and not fresh. These raviolis were easy to cook and better than some of the raviolis I've had at italian restaurants. The store carries a lot of Italian imports and goods other than raviolis so if you're in the area it's a good idea to drop in. read more

I love their food. The twist in traditional Italian dishes makes my mouth water at the thought of consuming what they sell. Recently, I ordered a gift certificate as a birthday gift for a relation who lives out of state. To make a long story short, it was refunded because the shipping fees would have cost as much as the product that would have been purchased. Even if I had used the certificate myself (I moved last summer from Dyker Heights to another part of South Brooklyn), the shipping cost would have been about the same. It's a Bensonhurst institute with prepared food for on the go and ingredients for a chef. I have been going here since 2014 and never once had a problem with products and staff. You have that ambiance of a family store with the feeling that you are part of the family. To be honest I don't act rude in any way which guarantee the wonderful service. If you are in need of all things Italian then you must find Pastosa. You can take the D train to 71 St or drive to New Utrecht Avenue and Bay Ridge Parkway. So what's the big deal? You can find anything online these days, but you won't find better quality than at this location. Ravioli, Fennel sausage, Prosciutto, chopped Meat, Manchego cheese, and Sweet Sopressata all taste great, but they taste much better when they come from this store. So sad how downhill this place has gone. Mozzarella cheese was not tasty at all. It wasn't that nice milky consistency. The chicken cutlets are $9.99 lb for dry tasteless chicken cutlets that salt couldn't even save. They charge you one price. Don't tell you there's a fee for a credit card and even after that, they charge a few cents more. Which is sneaky because it's the principal. They give two receipts. One is an itemized receipt, the other is a credit card transaction receipt and show two different prices. Today I had the pleasure of meeting one of Pastosa's key players; Joseph who carries on the proud gastronomic tradition of his family who established this Brooklyn icon. The fine gentleman is a master of public relations who was so kind and respectful when answering my elderly father's questions about the characteristics of some food products. Joseph's expertise - by far- exceeded the Manhattan cheesemongers who can be condescending and patronizing in their approach to the "public;" i.e. those of us who are not able to pay $10,000 per month rents. I was floored by Joseph's humble respect and admiration of food preparation as an art form and not only a necessity to live. Joseph knew how to modulate his voice so that my father could hear him. He also was so kind in addressing all the questions regarding preparation, storing and how to assure freshness. It is clear that the difference between Pastosa and other self-proclaimed "Italian specialty" stores is that they actually want to ensure their products are well prepared and fully appreciated. This is what makes them great. They are interested in what happens BEYOND the sale. In a similar vein, there have been historical figures who know what to do once they achieve peace. However, these individuals are far and few between as they require VISION to see what can be done BEYOND peace. Pastosa has a well established vision. They see beyond the selling of exquisite food products. They realize food is a means to communicate and express the intangible attributes of love and the importance of "la famiglia." We all hear of mom and pop shops that go under because the next generation does not step up to the plate. have dropped by here 4 times since moving to this neighborhood in the past month. i really like the handmade pasta, prepared foods and the ravioli here - their lemon chicken is delicious (and VERY lemony), and they have amazing chicken wings and ribs too. shrimp scampi a little TOO tart for my tastes but delicious as well. and of course their ravioli is excellent. bonus props to this place for really friendly service. as an asian i'd been warned to potentially expect some hostility or standoffishness when i moved into this area but the people here are very kind and helpful. one lady at the counter even weighed my lemon chicken separately (for billing) before spooning extra juices/sauce on top. it's a small gesture but it's the kind of thing that gets repeat business from me! read more

I discovered Pastosa by winning a give away at a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game. They close at 6:30 pm during the week, so it takes a little effort to go there after work by the D train. It is now my favorite place to pick up ravioli, self labeled canned tomatoes and cheese. They have fresh pasta including squid ink and whole wheat, tortellini too. I noticed 3 twelve inch pizza crusts for $2.99, I'll try that when the weather cools off. There is a large variety of frozen ravioli in many flavors including goat cheese, lobster, pumpkin, crab with squid ink, spinach, beef, szechuan shrimp, pancetta potato leek, and more! I have gotten the basil pesto ravioli before, but the fresh cheese ravioli is so good. I get the large round and 3 or 4 makes a good serving. The sell ready made Italian dishes and sauces. I often get the basil pesto and marinara. They also carry puttanesca, red or white clam sauce, fra diavolo, marscapone, scampi, alfredo and vodka sauces and sundried tomato pesto and walnut pesto. The service is rather friendly, and at the door is an order sheet you can pick up and write your cold cut order, and a listing of all of the homemade pasta choices. read more

I was hanging out in South Brooklyn on Saturday, and I decided to make a stop in Bensonhurst for some Sunday night family dinner goods. I checked out Italian food stores on Yelp, and Pastosa ravioli came up. My mouth began watering. Visions of fluffy ricotta filled pillows of pasta and savory Sunday night sauce danced in my head. I took the D train a few stops up, walked 2 blocks, and then saw the old school painted storefront of Pastosa Ravioli. There were plenty of Italian goodies inside the store: lots of ravioli of course, olive oil, imported real deal Nutella, sopressata, cheeses, pizza dough (2 for a dollar!), house made sauces, prepared stuffed peppers and mozzarella sticks, the works. I grabbed some spinach ravioli for my Sunday night meal, and headed back to my apartment. In hindsight, I should have grabbed a few packages for my freezer. I made the ravioli Sunday night with some red sauce, and they were absolutely fantastic.. definitely some of the best tasting store-made ravioli I have encountered. The spinach flavor was abundant, and the filling was creamy and perfect. The pasta itself maintained its chewiness, even after being frozen. This is an easy pit stop on the way home from Spumoni Gardens that I will make every single time in the future. read more
