You might not know they have a great bakery inside with some of the best crunchy cannolis in Brooklyn
    Melissa R.

You guys, THESE are cannolis!!! If you like Villabate's crunchy shell cannolis on 18th ave but can't get there, this is it. You can put these in the fridge and the shell will not get soggy. I'm so tired of soft cannolis!! I came for over a dozen on thanksgiving and they piped them fresh right in front of me. Love, love, love. But even sitting in the fridge case I've bought them and they've been crunchy. Let's keep this place in business! That Brooklyn Bites guy on Instagram missed a prime spot for some of the best ones we have in Brooklyn. This is not a paid announcement lol

This has happened to me 3 times already..I've also observed other customers having to do their own bagging, including an elderly woman! Manager(s) or owner(s) TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES BETTER, that is unacceptable. I was done paying and this moron (Wed night) behind the cashier asked after I paid, if I needed bags, to which I said "No thanks, I have my own", then he turns his back towards me to continue playing on his phone...even if we have our own bags you help out! Every place I grocery shop at, that is standard & part of the job. So as I'M bagging all my groceries, the store was completely empty of customers. There was another young male cashier to my left & he was staring at me while gossiping to my male cashier while he's playing on the phone again all while I'm bagging all my groceries, I stopped & looked at both of them & I was like "wow, guys, really?? Great service". These 2 rude idiots clearly weren't raised right, what sh*tty service at brooklyn harvest!

The first time I walked into Balady, I honestly expected to pick up only a few groceries. Instead,…read moreI spent much longer than planned exploring the shelves and left with several bags. This is not the kind of supermarket where every aisle feels predictable. It feels like a real destination for anyone who enjoys Middle Eastern, North African, Mediterranean, and halal food. What impressed me most was the variety. I found everyday groceries alongside products that can be difficult to locate in regular New York supermarkets, including different types of jameed, rich labneh, za'atar, rosewater, dried rose petals, pomegranate molasses, preserved lemons, semolina products, pickles, olives, premium honey, dates, dried fruits, nuts, cheeses, coffees, spices, and many imported regional brands. The fresh pita is also worth looking for. The bakery and sweets section deserves its own visit. There is baklava, semolina cake, halawet el jibn, znoud el sit, and other traditional desserts that immediately make the store feel familiar and welcoming. I also enjoyed browsing the neighboring cookware and home section, especially the traditional coffee and tea sets. The halal butcher counter in the back is another major strength. There is a good selection of beef, lamb, poultry, ground meat, and specialty cuts. The staff can also help prepare meat according to what you are cooking, which is very useful when a recipe requires a specific cut. I appreciate seeing a market take halal sourcing and certification seriously rather than treating halal as a small section hidden in a corner. I was also happy to see products representing Muslim countries, including PROTABAR, a halal protein bar made in Tunisia. It is produced with fresh dates from the Tunisian Sahara, whole hazelnuts, and protein that the company makes itself from Tunisian eggs. The result is a quality protein bar with a more natural, earthy taste than many heavily processed American protein bars I have tried. It does not feel like another artificially sweetened candy bar pretending to be healthy. I genuinely believe we should encourage more quality products made in Muslim countries, especially when the producers are creating something original instead of simply copying large international brands. Countries such as Tunisia have excellent agricultural ingredients, skilled producers, and a food culture that deserves more visibility in the United States. Seeing products like PROTABAR alongside established Middle Eastern and international brands makes Balady feel like more than a grocery store. It becomes a place where smaller producers can reach the communities that will truly appreciate them. There are a few areas that could make the experience even better. The aisles can become narrow and crowded during busy hours, so shopping earlier in the day is more comfortable. Parking nearby can also require patience. I would appreciate consistently careful checking of expiration dates, sealed spice bags, packaged meats, and other imported products. Syrupy pastries such as baklava could also be packaged more securely to prevent leaking onto the rest of the groceries. Even with those small criticisms, Balady deserves five stars. It offers an extraordinary range of halal and regional foods, genuinely useful specialty ingredients, a strong butcher department, beautiful sweets, and the excitement of discovering something new each time. My advice is to arrive with a shopping list, check the specials, and still leave enough time to explore. You will probably find several things you did not know you needed.

They specialize in a variety of jarred kimchi that you normally see in grocery stores. The price per jar is anywhere between $10-$15. They also have a weekly (changing) menu offering Korean homemade soups and lunch. I got a pork kimchi ($13 after taxes) and it was delicious. This brought up so much childhood memories of a time when my dad worked at a local Cheung Fun place in Chinatown. You feel something inside that you don't normally get when you go to a crowded / fancier restaurant. It feels like "home" in a sense. I love a small business like Kimchi Kooks Kate's Kitchen because it adds characters to the local business. :) The staff are friendly and because there is an open kitchen, you can see them make your food. Although no seating, you can always grab the food and get a slice of pizza next door and have a meal at the pizzeria's outdoor seating. :)

I picked up a small jar of their classic white kimchi ($8.32), which I was so excited to try because white kimchi is traditionally made with pine nuts and it's difficult to find a nut-free version at supermarkets. I thought the kimchi had a pleasant tang, though it was a little savorier than I expected. The variety of banchan was also excellent-- I counted 21 different dishes as well as 4 different types of sauces. I picked up a miyeok and dubu muchim ($8.32) which was a seaweed salad tossed with firm tofu crumbles. I intended to eat it for dinner, but I finished the whole container before I got home because it was so addictive and delicious. If you have any questions, a staff member is at hand but everything is neatly labeled with an explanation of ingredients. Their kitchen is open on Wed-Sun so I'd love to return to try a weekend special, which rotates on a weekly basis. Kimchi Kooks is located a short walk away from Owl's Head Park and the pier, so I would definitely recommend grabbing a few banchan to-go if the weather is nice! PS- A staff member kindly let me know that all the kimchis are nut-free and that if you bring the glass jar back, you get $1 off your next purchase.
