I don't give out 5 stars for Mexican places that often, but Jarochito has a few things going for it. 1. The barbacoa is fantastic. Weekends only. The guy behind the counter said Friday and Saturday are best. It's as good as what they make at South Philly Barbacoa, and that place is a cult smash. 2. Their default for a burrito is smothered and covered (see photo). Took the dish to a whole different level. Yeah, the tortilla for it maybe wasn't perfect (if they had one of those burrito tortilla steamers, that would have been nice) but that's a small critique. 3. The bakery looked really good too. I was too stuffed from the burrito, but I will be back for the tres leches cake. 4. They make pupusas from scratch. Another one I'll be back for. And finally, even though this place qualifies as hole in the wall and won't win any fine dining awards, they treated me with respect. That goes a long way with me. Five stars to me means that you should go out of your way for it. And I'll be making the trek down in the future. Probably on a Friday for that barbacoa. read more

Just got some cheese and tortillas to make some delicious tacos this weekend. The place is always clean and well stocked. Had the best tres leches ever! Many flavors like strawberry, peach, walnuts and chocolate. Extremely fresh moist, not over sweetened my taste, just heavenly taste and texture! They also have full sized cakes for special occasions. Also a full size shop with Mexican products, spices and beverages. Definitely recommend. read more

Walking by this Mexican grocery , you would never think they have a bakery and a Taco stand in the back! I invite you to go inside and smell the freshly oven baked pastrys and sweet bread coming out every afternoon ! Not to mention the the good food they have ! Tacos,burritos , tortas etc . All made with the fresh meat that the store in self cuts everyday for its deli part of the place . Where you can even buy the meat yourself and make your own at home tacos ! I really don't want to share this place with the public...Word will get around regardless. I have sat in the back and ordered plates..only because I saw what other people were eating. Hell if I know what is good. Seems everything is good,,,better than good . The food is so fresh, salt is contained. I have stopped in just to buy the sliced meats. roll the meat with cheeses and add spice, pan fry and make a brown or red sauce over rice or pasta, OMGoodnesss I am so glad to have this establishment within driving distance. Horrible! I've been going to this store all my life as a grew up in the area. I recently placed an order for a cake for my son's birthday. To place the order I actually had to go in in person because I was put on hold for over 15 mins. Without anyone helping me. Once there I took almost an hour just to place the order since the girl at the register kept telling me to wait as she rang people up. There were other people at the store stocking and doing something else but not helping. I show up to pick up the cake the next week 1 hour after the scheduled time to pick it up and the girl doesn't even remember me!!! She's asking when I place the order and all these stupid questions. Then she tells me "oh yeah I remember, the cake guy is not here yet I don't think your cake is ready" needless to say I was livid! their "cake guy" had just walked in and told me it was not ready but that he can out something together in 30 mins. Tops. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!!! My son's birthday was in 1 hr. and they left me scrambling last minute for a solution. This is a local bakery for me and my family and I always get my cakes there. We love the tres leches, they are very delicious. They sell other items such as imported Mexican and central American drinks, chips, meats and cheeses. They have piñatas as well. I recently tried their food which is cooked in the back area where they cook in front of you and a few stools are available. I only had the Steak tacos but I loved them. That's how you make a taco! This place is a hole in the wall, inside a hole in the wall. Whoa, inception. No, but it's really a Mexican grocery store that has a small kitchen in the back area complete with bar stool seating. I came here once just to purchase a beverage, and stumbled upon the food area by chance. So glad I did, because they cook up some really delicious food. I consistently order the steak torta, which is a very filling $6 treat that is complete with a generous amount of avocado and well seasoned small chunks of steak. Have it with out with jalapenos, depending on your preference. The chef will usually have the courtesy to ask you. As I have not been in the area for months, I'm really starting to miss this place. I'll definitely stop by on my next trip to the Brighton Beach area. Come in and explore their options! read more

The only reason why I came here was because I wanted Nieve Tia Mimi icy. I went inside to ask & Unfortunately they didn't have. It smelled very good inside though. Fresh baked bread. I saw the kitchen in the back so I decided to try their tacos. I mean since you can't go wrong with tacos. Worse decision of my life. I order one chicken & one pastor. The chicken still had bone & skin, it was gross. No salt or any seasoning. The pastor was so greasy & no salt or seasoning as well. The side salsa was so water down it had not flavor what so ever. We stopped in for tacos before heading to Brighton Beach, after having seen Sietsema's recommendation on Eater NY (http://ny.eater.com/maps/best-tacos-taqueria-new-york-city-brooklyn-queens). It's literally a few tall stools in the back of a Mexican bodega; you can see the back-of-house guys prepping the next day's meat in front of you. We all ordered tacos, which cap out at $3 and come with braised spring onions and jalapenos on the side for garnish. The carnitas felt fatty and not cooked long enough, but the barbacoa was nice and moist. The best was actually the beef tongue, which was cooked crispy but still tender inside. If you're visiting Brighton Beach and don't mind walking five minutes north, you won't be disappointed. read more

Cool little lunch counter in the back of a nondescript grocery store. So far I've tried a huge burrito and a torta, both very tasty. I'll try one of the platters next time. Never been to Mexico but this seems authentic enough; note their website is in Spanish only. The place reminds me of the taquerias in San Francisco. They make their own tortillas here. Though I appreciate that a place like this would have seating at all, it's all flat stools so you can't do anything with your jacket. Takeout would be preferable but there's nowhere to eat outdoors around there except all the way over on the boardwalk. read more
