Super cute small local business that sells "homemade" Korean kimchi with a small weekly menu. It is located in a cross section of Bay Ridge Avenue and Colonial Road next to a pizzeria. They specialize in a variety of jarred kimchi that you normally see in grocery stores. The price per jar is anywhere between $10-$15. They also have a weekly (changing) menu offering Korean homemade soups and lunch. I got a pork kimchi ($13 after taxes) and it was delicious. This brought up so much childhood memories of a time when my dad worked at a local Cheung Fun place in Chinatown. You feel something inside that you don't normally get when you go to a crowded / fancier restaurant. It feels like "home" in a sense. I love a small business like Kimchi Kooks Kate's Kitchen because it adds characters to the local business. :) The staff are friendly and because there is an open kitchen, you can see them make your food. This was such a cute little gem tucked away on the quieter end of Bay Ridge Ave. I love that it's a family-owned small business, and that they have (limited) hot options as well as packaged kimchi and banchan, along with some home goods and instant ramyun. I picked up a small jar of their classic white kimchi ($8.32), which I was so excited to try because white kimchi is traditionally made with pine nuts and it's difficult to find a nut-free version at supermarkets. I thought the kimchi had a pleasant tang, though it was a little savorier than I expected. The variety of banchan was also excellent-- I counted 21 different dishes as well as 4 different types of sauces. I picked up a miyeok and dubu muchim ($8.32) which was a seaweed salad tossed with firm tofu crumbles. I intended to eat it for dinner, but I finished the whole container before I got home because it was so addictive and delicious. If you have any questions, a staff member is at hand but everything is neatly labeled with an explanation of ingredients. Their kitchen is open on Wed-Sun so I'd love to return to try a weekend special, which rotates on a weekly basis. Kimchi Kooks is located a short walk away from Owl's Head Park and the pier, so I would definitely recommend grabbing a few banchan to-go if the weather is nice! Though this one is closer to kimchi than I would like, I'm still grateful that i can bring home georjeori without needing to book a tasting menu experience (iykyk). I really like the weekly rotating menu, the staff taking my order was very friendly, and with grab-n-go style of the establishment the space was very open, clean, and inviting. Owl's head park is close by so picking up something here is perfect for a picnic. I had the beef bokkum (hot style), my friend had the chicken bokkum (curry style). both were good and a big portion to fill us up for the day. They are known for their kimchi and other side dishes that are sold in grocery stores so I was quite surprised that it was not an included side dish like at other Korean establishments. I just want to say that the B9 bus drops you right out front! Super convenient. This spot is a little far for me but worth the distance. This modest-sized Korean-Cuisine takeout shop is tucked away on Bay Ridge Avenue. Outside the shop lays a generous (and large) sparkling water bowl on the warm cement; A refreshment for the passing pups out for a stroll. Inside lies a spotless, humble, yet absolutely beautiful restaurant. On the right of the restaurant stands a refrigerator case full of yummy Korean goodies; Kimchi, soy sauce eggs, fruits, and a variety of waters, to name a few. At the counter is a Tablet with the menu of what's available for the day. The menu is limited, which personally, I like. The more limited a menu, the fresher the food will be when it gets to you. The larger the menu, the more "Prep and *Hold*" work that needs to be done, ahead of time. I ordered their soup "Seoul Remedy" and their mild stew "Dak Jjim" with a side of Rice, then brought home Soy Sauce Eggs. Seoul Remedy is a Vegetable Soup that has just a *pinch* of back-heat. It is PHENOMENAL. The cabbage, scallions and mushrooms were so delicious and made such an amazingly flavorful broth. I was blown away. Dak Jjim included braised boneless skinless chicken thigh with various vegetables and these things called "rice cakes". The Chicken was blow-your-mind exquisite. The vegetables mixed with the delectable pieces of chicken have such a distinct flavor; It's breath-taking. The rice cakes...I must admit, I did not enjoy. The texture was more than I could handle. The Soy Sauce Eggs; I split one open with the expectation of seeing the yolk a little 'gushy', like Ramen Eggs. These are much more cooked, but have a similar flavor. Bay Ridge has needed a good Korean spot for a while, so Kimchi Kooks (aka Kate's Kitchen), which soft opened a few weeks ago and had its grand opening this week, is a welcome addition. It's a small takeout shop located close to both Owl's Head Park and the 69th Street Pier, so there are plenty of places to eat nearby. I've been there 3 times in the 3 weeks they've been open (I haven't had Korean food since before the pandemic and have clearly been missing it), and the food is delicious, like something you'd get when visiting a friend's kitchen. They have a refrigerated case full of kimchi, sauces, and banchan, a display of grocery items, and a bokkum (sauteed dishes) menu that changes weekly. They also have weekend-only specials, like this week's bulgogi and topokki, and quite a few vegan options. Everyone has been really friendly and more than happy to give more information about everything they offer. My favorite thing from the refrigerated items (besides the kimchi, which is of course fantastic, given their name) is the dubu jorim (braised tofu), and their version is thankfully not spicy so my son can share it with us. He also loves their purple rice, which is why we get it every time even though we have plenty of rice at home. We've tried the home style and kare style sauces for the bokkum, and both are great with the different proteins. I prefer my bulgogi a little more thinly shaved than what we got, but the flavor was still really good. Can't wait to see what specials come up in the future and to try more dishes, and also looking forward to stepping up my home cooking by bringing home some doenjang, ssamjang, and more! read more

In this past year and a half of the pandemic, supporting small businesses has taken on an outsized importance. Thankfully its so much easier when the small business is so good!!! When we saw Kimchi Kooks (Kates Kitchen) was moving into an empty storefront on Bay Ridge Parkway we got excited as it meant that there would be Korean food within a stones throw of us. We got even more excited when we tried it, as it was absolutely delicious. With a rotating menu, backed up with some standbys all the time, there's always something new to try and familiar dishes to come back to. The bokkum is delicious with beef, peppers, sauteed mushrooms and carrots with a heaping serving of kimchi. Bay Ridge has a new culinary take out treat! Noticed this place while waiting for the bus and thought we'd give it a try because we love Korean food and this place just looks adorable. When my man asked for a menu they were more than happy to go through the items! Sooo happy we tried them. Three words to describe their mains and sides: Fresh, Flavorful and Fabulous. They do a different weekly menu of a couple of mains and some weekend specials. But their ready to go sides remain pretty consistent. We tried: Gimbap: a seaweed wrapped roll filled with, egg, spinach, fish cake, beef, kimchi, carrot. It comes with a little marinated cabbage. Both are great separate and really delicious and satisfying together. A good healthy portion too! Beef and Mushroom Jeongol: this is a beef and mushroom hotpot stew with glass noodles. Hearty without being heavy. A great winter soup. Kale Kimchi: a not spicy take on kimchi. Tangy and lovely, would make an excellent and unique replacement for the pickle on a burger if you are looking for an extra healthy alternative. Oi Muchim (lightly spicy radish, cucumber and carrot salad/slaw): This is soooo fresh and lovely, I had a hard time not eating the whole tub, but I wanted to make sure I tried a bit of all the other dishes. I definitely came back for seconds of this. One of the best "slaws" I have had in an age! Bap: Korean purple rice. Perfectly cooked, simple and an excellent complement to all the flavors of our other items. I would recommend putting a little on your plate and putting your favorite side dish on top of it. Yummy. Kimchi: some of the best, fresh made, truly balanced kimchi we've had in a long time. For those surviving on supermarket kimchi, this will be a revelation. I've come here many times - the kimchi is very good. They have a large and small option. Can get $1 off your next purchase if you bring the empty jars back -bonchan selection is great. Big fan of the potato jorim and the eumok jorim. Hands down the 2 best banchans available. The Dak Jjim weekly dish is ok but not something I would get again. It's always fun to explore a new neighborhood and find hidden gems like local eats. Lately, I've been missing my kimchi from the Asian markets in my area and wasn't sure if the American groceries nearby would have it. Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon Kimchi Kooks on Yelp. I appreciated how accommodating the store hours and was able to go after work. Though my main goal that day was to stock up on kimchi, they also offer premade banchan and hot prepared food. There were so many different varieties of kimchi that it was hard for me to choose. They had a white kimchi, a kale kimchi, a beet kimchi, and an original flavor, along with non-vegan counterparts. The non-vegan counterparts don't have any fish sauce in them. Those who eat their kimchi by the forkful will want to purchase the quart size! Prices are comparable to what I see at the Asian supermarkets, at $7-8/pint size, and $15 for a quart size. My first try of this handcrafted kimchi involved using the vegan, original flavor in a kimchi grilled cheese sandwich. Along the way I snuck bites of it and loved the refreshing bite of crunchy radish and cabbage with the kick of gochugaru. Layering the thick mat of kimchi inside our sandwiches added an explosion of flavor. The absence of the fish sauce didn't compromise the flavor at all. I would say this is a great option for vegans and non-vegans alike looking to add some probiotics to their diet. I'll be updating this review once I try the kale version. read more

This i my second time ordering. The 1st time was to try their kimchi. It was 3/5. It doesn't taste as authentic to me. :( Very bland. 2nd time was to try JanchiGuksu: very bland. Described as A party noodle? Then the korean fried chicken. It tasted like Chinese sesame chicken. Very disappointed. Especially considering the prices for both dishes. $15 each serving. Small portion For the amount given. I wouldn't mind paying the price if it was yummy. The banchan (potato and egg side) were the only items that were good. And I bought white kimchi, which is supposed to fresh and refreshing. It was past fermentation flavor. Too sour/ old. It bubbled and overflowed out of jar after opening. My review is of their Kimchi in a jar product, Classic Kimchee and White Kimchi, they are done very well. If anythign the Classic could be spicer. Regardless, I always feel comfy at home knowing I have a jar or 2 of the white kimchee, it goes well with everything, brings the dreaded leftover takeout back to life!!!, and it's a great emergency snack when I've skipped a meal while working from home.
