Just lovely customer service and selection here! I stumbled upon it by accident and the helpful young person who helped me explained that it used to be a convenience store but they made it a bakery, and Jimmy P is surely glad they did. Tasty slices of cake, generous portions and wide variety. Each for like $2.50. For a little more, go a bit upscale for the carrot cake or others for $4 and packaged nicely. I recently ordered a cake from this location. I spoke with the representative/ worker regarding my order. I specifically asked for a golden cake with chocolate frosting. I asked her to repeat the order again and thought it was good. However, I picked up the cake, and to my horror, it was a cake with vanilla frosting. Of course I beyond annoyed and angry. They have a great assortment of dried spices and peppers, seasoned meats, fresh fruit and veggies and fresh hand made tortillas. This bakery is also a grocery/deli. I live a block away from Mandato bakery, and the amazing smell that wafts from their kitchen is very, very hard to resist. It's a Mexican bakery that has many interesting specialties in addition to regular bakery items like danishes and frosted cakes. My favorite is their simple pound cake, sold by the slice. It's so very flavorful, gently sweet with just a hint of bitterness in the crust. Sometimes it's plain, sometimes there's a sprinkle of currants or a streak of cocoa in the batter, but it's always delicious. The other pastries are also excellent, and test my willpower every time I go by. In addition to bakery items they serve a few tacos and other Mexican items - again excellent. (If you want more of sit-down place, the same owner runs Tacos por Favor, on 5th ave. Service is lovely - very friendly and gracious. I was walking to my car when I casually bumped into this bakery. It really called my attention due to the variety of pan dulce that I saw from outside. I picked up $16 dollars worth of pan because it just looked so delicious and seemed soft. I drove back home looking forward to this bread but unfortunately this bread fell short of all expectations. The bread was super salty! I don't know what type of recipe this bakery uses but who puts salt on pan dulce? Perhaps the salt was accidental but I definitely won't be coming back here. I don't write reviews, but I felt I wanted for Mandato Bakery. I've been coming here quite often lately, and they have never disappointed. Today I came on and just asked for 4 tacos, and left it to their discretion, in this case to Don Pedro, owner. I received the most delectable carnitas tacos with avocado that "hit the spot" The carnitas was moist with a bit of exterior crunch, their salsa verde is on point, not being too spicy to overpower, but rather to complement. On my various visits I've had various tacos including their breakfast taco which with a cup of coffee is PERFECT. Chorizo accompanies the morning taco with "laced" grilled cheese, refried beans, avocado, and their signature salsa verde. On the sweet side their donuts are delicious, in particular their Apple donut and the Chocolate nut variety. Their traditional baked breads are also not to be missed. The Oaxacan coffee need to be tried whether it's the "Mexican Chocolate" or their "6 Bean Blend". The staff is friendly, accommodating and cordial. Happened by this store the other day and stopped in to see if they had huitlacoche, which they did. It's a great little market, small but well stocked and very tidy, with a good selection of Mexican groceries including cheeses, herbs and vegetables, dried chiles and spices, and jarred goods. Some of it is stuff I can find in supermarkets (like canned chipotles in adobo) but some of it, like the huitlacoche, flor de Calabaza, and fresh nopales, is harder to find in the neighborhood. They also had pan dulce and although I didn't have high hopes - expected stale, generic "commercial bakery" product - we tried them anyway and they were quite good. There were some cooking tools for sale as well. The man who owns it was extremely nice and we had a very enjoyable conversation with him about how to cook huitlacoche (he told me how he cooks it and I tried it - it was delicious) and about restaurants we like in Brooklyn.
