    Famous friendly chicken dinner
    Samantha R.

Fake spring has come to Milwaukee and it's time for me to explore the city more. I had a chance to get to West Allis on a recent weekend and decided to try TomKen's that I had heard good things about. I had passed by a couple of times when I was near the fairgrounds. TomKen's has classic sports bar vibes. They were busy when I visited on a Saturday afternoon. It took a little while to get my order in. But the people were nice and there was a Brewers game on TV and I didn't mind hanging out for awhile. I got the famous friendly chicken dinner. This was a 4-piece half chicken dinner with coleslaw, fries and Italian bread. It was a lot of food especially for the price. The chicken was juicy and the batter was nicely salty. The fries were the crinkle variety--nothing special on their own but a nice potato-ey complement to the chicken. The cole slaw was solid--a little sweet and not too mayonnaise heavy. One should not eat fried chicken every day of course, but I would definitely come back for a treat.

A well known MKE establishment, for good reason. We popped in on a Saturday evening & the place was bustling. Street parking was a bit difficult to find, so we parked down the block. We were lucky enough to find a high top table. We were greeted promptly & our drink orders were brought quickly. We decided to try the fried pickles-as an unofficial pickle connoisseur, these were some of the get best. The actual pickle was delicious, batter was light, the ranch was amazing. It was sprinkled with a delicious seasoning as well. We also ordered wings & chicken thighs. The wings (half battered/half grilled) were very tasty. We tried Buffalo wings the bleus & a special Hungarian sauce. Both were very tasty & not too spicy. We tried garlic Parmesan on the thighs. This sauce was a bit too gloppy for my taste, the thighs were a bit greasy. Overall, we will definitely return for pickles & wings!

Honey BBQ and Buffalo Sings the Bleus. Potato wedges and onion rings

There was big hype around TomKen's wings. Sayings like "best wings in Milwaukee" so I was extra skeptical going in. David and I have been to Points East Pub which I've heard it competes with (and we love Points East wings). Let's just say this, they were the meatiest wings we have ever had!! And all 4 sauces were outstanding! They were fried to perfection and just overall a flavor packed bite every time. The ranch is a little watery but it actually suits the wings well because it doesn't overpower the sauce flavor. Potato wedges were super solid and came out piping hot! Only miss for me were the onion rings. They were way too oily and didn't have much flavor other than that. So maybe pass on those but get everything else

20 minutes outside of Milwaukee this little dive Ish kind of bar that serves fried chicken and some of the best baked chicken wings I've ever had! Service is well casual and everyone there is nice and on a -2° day.. wings and shots of Jack Daniels is perfect

Top flavor: The Nutty Rooster made with Peanut Butter and Sriracha. Bottom: Buffalo garlic.

Great neighborhood bar atmosphere. We ordered wings to go and we selected the following two flavors. The nutty rooster which is basically peanut butter sauce and sriacha. Really good and actually tastes better when reheated! It's not too hot and the combo works pretty well. We also got the buffalo garlic. That too was a pretty solid choice. The fries were meh and not really worth ordering but if you go definitely come for the drinks and the wings. Parking is street side only. We were there on a Friday night and still managed to get a space.

Been coming here for close to two years now. The wings are incredible! My sister and brother-in-law ordered the fried green beans on one occasion and I am hooked! Trust me, you can't eat just one (basket). They have regular favors and rotating flavors. My favorite are the honey bbq, Greek freak, and Insane Yellow Dragon, but honestly I have not had a flavor yet that I didn't like. I have had the boneless a few times, but come on, it just isn't the same as having the sauce on your fingers and dripping down your chin! It is a nice neighborhood bar just across from the fairgrounds with lots of friendly people and all of the staff are great! If you have never checked this place out, you have to give it a try!

Now let me tell you something brother! If you want the best wings in the state, you'll be coming here to Tomkens brother! Always great atmosphere, and service is like Wrestlemania! Food items other than wings are great as well brother, try them brother! If you like chicken, you'll never go anywhere else! Brad is one of the most lively fun people you can have here, and all the other bartenders are as well! Great service and excellent times! Top to bottom, one of the best bars in the city, if not state! You eat your wings You drink your beers And say your prayers brother!

The lunch menu has a huge variety of options, which made it tough to choose. I went with the BLT on sourdough, served with a pickle spear and thick-cut potato chips. It totally hit the spot. The bacon they use is fantastic. My friend ordered the Sriracha Melt (ham, pepperoni, mozzarella, jalapeños, and sriracha mayo grilled on white bread), which also came with chips and a pickle. Immediately devoured. The salads looked incredible....the table next to us ordered a couple and they looked absolutely divine. Next time for sure. The adjacent market is a must-browse too. It's packed with specialty products and rare finds that you don't see everywhere, making it easy to walk out with way more than you planned. Great food, great service, and a fun market to explore. Highly recommend stopping in if you're anywhere near West Allis.

Both were fantastic! There was street parking available, and while we arrived at a peak time, we were able to find a table after a brief wait once we ordered. There was a covered patio seating area that was also being utilized. After lunch, we browsed the connected store, with a nice selection of cheese and sausage, of course, and lots of great local products. Friendly service, generous portions, and delicious food - we'll be back!

But once you know where it is, it's easy to find and worth it. I went in during lunch one day and it was quiet. The hours are limited, as they close early afternoon. I had a great conversation with the owners and cook, Gus, and his lovely wife behind the counter. I ordered the lamb gyro plate with the french fries - and Gus said, you can get fries anywhere, try my rice! And so he served up the rice and asked me to try it right then and there. I asked for my feta on the side, and again he was insistent I try it then. The portions are gigantic - it was enough for at least 2 meals. We talked about his background in ethnic cooking. I was impressed they opened up around the time Covid-19 was raging and they've managed to stay in business despite opening up during a difficult time. The food was good, the portions are generous, making it a good value for the money, I enjoyed meeting the proprietors, and I'm looking forward to returning and trying out some of his soups and other lunch items.

His current restaurant is Gus' Deli - West Allis, WI at 813 N 60th Street, on the first floor of the CBS 58 building. Last weekend, I finally got a chance (two chances, actually) to visit. Saturday morning, I called in a carry-out order for a Ham, Egg, and Cheese breakfast sandwich on wheat, and on Monday, I walked in and ordered the Chicken Enchiladas dinner for carry-out. Both were really excellent and a GREAT value with plenty of food! I could only finish half of each at each sitting and had the rest as leftovers later on those respective days. Dine-in and carry-out is available, and the menu hangs above the kitchen and consists of breakfast and lunch sandwiches, as well as some Mexican favorites, such as tacos, buritos, and enchiladas, with choice of chicken, beef, or pork. His website, Facebook page, Google page, and Yelp page all show slightly different business hours, but the key takeaways are 1) open for breakfast and lunch Monday-Saturday, and 2) the food is delicious at a great value! This last photo shows the Summer business hours will be 8am-2pm Monday-Saturday, starting June 13th, but you safely call in a carry-out order or dine-in during those times this week, too.

Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience when I stopped in on a Saturday morning. It's a small place with cheerful blue paint on the outside, a couple of large front windows, and white awnings over each. Inside is a small area with a few tables and stools at the windows. The space felt cluttered, with portable air conditioners and a heater hanging from the ceiling, which made it feel disorganized and a bit uninviting. I was the only customer when I arrived. There's a menu board on the wall behind the counter. I didn't see my usual drink, but I was able to order a Chai Latte. It was well made -- hot, with extra foam. I would have liked to order a pastry, scone, croissant, or muffin, but the only options were a box of donuts and a jar of cookies. I know many people enjoy this place, and perhaps most customers stop in just to grab their coffee and go. However, I prefer a café where I can relax, enjoy a pastry, and read a book. For that kind of experience, this wasn't a good fit. Overall, not the kind of coffee shop experience I look for.
