I have had gold rush quite a few times since my last review. I'd have to say I'm still not the biggest fan of their chicken. For me, it's lacking flavor. They cook the chicken pretty well but I need more flavor. Outside of that, I recently tried their pizza and burger. And although I was not impressed with their burger at all, their pizza was really good. So I increased my stars based on the fact that their pizza is good. Every time I order from there I try to get something new. I have also tried their onion rings, fries and mozzarella sticks. All standard and ok. The burger does not come with any toppings but they can add onion. Meh, definitely better burgers elsewhere. read more

We called in a order to pickup tonight for dinner. I arrived as they were just putting my order together. I arrived home and begin plating up our dinners. The chicken was so crispy, but super moist and tender. The french fries were nice and crispy, but not overdone.. The coleslaw was fresh and tasty. So glad it was not sopping wet like some places do but not gold rush they do a fantastic job. I know they've been in business over 50 years and I can understand why their food is absolutely delicious.!! read more

I finally made my way to gold rush chicken. It seems everyone in bayview talks about it so it was time. First I want to say that when you walk in this place is spotless and had the cleanest fryers I'd ever seen. They don't have mobile ordering which is fine because by the time we placed the call it was ready in 20 minutes. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the sides are a little less than desired but the chicken is great. The breading on the fried chicken was so crispy and the meat was juicy. Conveniently located on Howell Avenue with ample street parking available. We love coming here for chicken buckets. Chicken is always piping hot, freshly made flavorful and juicy. I love the coleslaw too - fresh and creamy. The staff is kind and efficient. Prices are good and we get a deal when ordering a bucket. Love coming with kids for dip cones. Nice owners who give out free sundaes to all Mom's on Mother's Day too! Definitely our favorite spot for chicken. read more

Gold Rush is a good example of don't judge a book by its cover. From the outside, it doesn't look the most appealing, but they exceeded all expectations. Placed an order late on a Saturday night, the person who answered was friendly and gave a perfect time estimate. I got the 4 piece bbq chicken dinner and it was a great deal for the price. It was a drumstick, full wing, thigh, and breast smothered in loads of bbq sauce. The sauce was a little sweet for my preferences, but overall the chicken was really great. The dinner comes with fries, coleslaw and a roll. Unfortunately, the sides were just okay. The fries were a little over cooked, coleslaw needed more flavor. The roll was a Hawaiian roll, so can't go wrong there. The issue with the sides could have been that we ordered 45 minutes before close, but who knows. I would absolutely come back for the chicken. Inside looked clean and I appreciated that the staff who needed it were wearing beard nets. Obviously they care about food safety and put out a quality product. read more

Went to Gold Rush for the 1st time on the way home from work today. The chicken is done very simply, ( Salt, pepper and flour) but cooked to absolute PERFECTION! I have never had fried chicken this good in my life! I will become a regular here after the first bite. The food was cooked fresh to order, which was really nice to see how high their standards are here. The restaurant is completely spotless as well. I have been going to Gold Rush since 1981. They used to live fairly close to this place but I have long since moved 25 minutes away. I still drive to gold Rush whenever I'm in the mood for fried chicken. It is consistent, it is friendly, it is fresh, and it is delicious. The menu is extremely extensive, including shrimp, lobster, pizza, assorted sides, and lots and lots of combinations of order sizes. The chicken is always hot, crisp, and extremely tasty. it's lean towards the savory side, but as always properly cooked, meaty, and juicy. The french fries, a generous portion of which comes with the orders, are among some of the best in Milwaukee. If you were looking for a perfect "I don't feel like cooking tonight" purveyor of generous portions of a large variety of choices that will please everybody at a reasonable price, this is certainly the place. They've been around a very long time, and very deservedly. I ranked it five stars primarily because because the food never disappoints; the service never disappoints; and just for the general longevity and consistency of a fine Milwaukee food establishment (institution). read more

Visiting family and Dad wanted fried chicken but my wife didn't. Gold Rush is close to his house and saw they had Cod for their fish dinner so we got Dad his chicken and my wife her "fish fry". Was super impressed by the quality of both the chicken AND fish. Going old school and a trip down memory lane for the guy who wants fried chicken. Always used this place for many events at St. Paul Catholic Church and satisfied the numerous eaters. We hadn't tried them for a long time as one who attempts to eat healthy Time to break with tradition and order a 4 piece chicken dinner and 4 piece tenders along with a side of onion rings. Plus I needed a reward for all my efforts and walking so a turtle sundae Fresh hot ready in 20 minutes when I called at 3:30 PM and was finger licking good. Onion rings were crispy and delicious. Chicken tenders with fries more than enough with excellent honey mustard sauce. Chicken dinner was devoured with one piece for later. Happy to support local who still turn out a quality meal and a reasonable price. Oh and the sundae was scrumptious. Only the Cole slaw was not a favorite as I have had better. If you are looking for health food, do not order from here. This is fried food. And it's damn good. The word chicken is in the name and that's what we get about 99% of the time. I don't think I have ever had cold or poorly cooked food here. I cannot say the same for the two national chains in town. I usually just order the chicken dinner. The chicken dinner comes with a chicken breast a chicken leg a thigh and a wing. You also get crispy french fries and coleslaw. They used to give you ice cream but they discontinued that during the pandemic. I don't know why. But I am assuming supply chain problems. The staff at Gold Rush is pleasant and the food is made to order. Always hot and tasty. The Cole slaw is even pretty good. That's something I normally wouldn't order but since it comes with the dinner I tried it and like it. Each chicken dinner comes with a coupon stapled to the top. If you collect 12 coupons you get a free dinner. And trust me, you will like the chicken from here so much that you will eventually get that free chicken dinner. I highly recommend. read more

They deliver, pretty promptly, I also like their pizza, crisp thin crust, though they don't have anchovies. They're open later than most local joints, so this has become my go to place when I work late and don't feel like cooking. We live right next door. It's a great for locals looking for an easy meal. It's a cheap, quick, good chicken place that doesn't try to be anything fancy. They're a staple in the community, and every time we've visited over the years they've been very pleasant. They even gave my son some extra ice cream a few times. Last time I stopped in though for some odd reason I was craving fish so attempted to order the fish fry..omg, I cannot describe the OUTRAGE I felt when we got home and I opened the box to find 2 square formed fish patties atop a mound of fries!...Yeah, sadly they were exactly like the ones you get on the filet o fish at Micky D's. Hot day! Respect goes to the employee there - very grateful for their ability to maintain very friendly despite the heat in the shop... This is my first time at this place, and it's 60 years of success was no kidding! I orders regular and BBQ fried chicken, which came with a fry; and coleslaw, plus fried mushroom. Chicken and coleslaw tasted amazing! (And this is from a person that doesn't like to eat deep fried food.) The mushroom was s but different though I am still deciding if I love it or not. I'm mostly reviewing here to correct a misconception. One of the previous reviews states that the food is not made to order. That is incorrect. Their chicken is fresh - never frozen. Hand-battered everyday, right when they open. And they don't fry it until it is ordered. I know this for a fact. Want proof? Walk in, order some chicken, and not only will you be waiting 20 minutes to get it, but you can watch the cook from over the counter as he drops your fresh chicken into a fryer, cooks it for about 15 minutes. And then it is packaged and given to you. Personally, I think it's the best fried chicken I've ever had. Now, tastes vary. And it's not the crispiest because they don't over-batter it. But it's still got crisp to it. It's a simple, no-frills batter that compliments the meat. And OMG the meat is juicy! They've got the cooking times down perfectly! I've been eating this stuff for 30 years. And as another reviewer mentioned, there is some inconsistency in sizes of the pieces. Sometimes they're big, sometimes not so big. It comes and goes. That just suggests to me that it's a supplier thing. Why only 4 stars? Some of their other food doesn't stand up with their chicken. Their pizza is also fresh, but a little meh. It's edible. And to the best of my knowledge, all their fish is frozen. Although, I think the lake perch is pretty good for being frozen. Two more points I wish to make. I REALLY dig the french fries. Some people don't like them, some do. They are a little bit different than you'll find other places. They're also not gourmet or fancy. Just basic fries that have their own thing going on. I used to stop in whenever I was passing by just to get a bag of fries. Finally... leftovers. Well, chicken gets pretty dry after a night in the fridge no matter where you get it. To maximize the original flavor, leave the chicken in the bucket (or the 2 paper plates) it came in, remove everything else, and put some foil over the bucket. Eat it cold. The batter retains that "special something" that I really like about it... and some of the crispiness! I don't recommend reheating it. Certainly not in the microwave. But as you may already know, I don't destroy food by nuking it. :) read more

I am all for local staples of the community right? With the recent incident i had with the Gold rush owners it makes me question there business practices. It started off with me ordering delivery for lunch. I ordered a chicken dinner at 1:22pm. So two hours past and i wonder where is my food, so i called. The lady tells me that they are backed up. I said well my break was over a hour and a half ago. I ordered from here thinking that i wouldnt take that long considering im about 3 blocks away. So the lady says well i guess they will have to credit your credit card or something? Or something? So then the lady says ok let me call the driver, hold please and hung up on me. Waiting patiently i called again and she says well he left he should have been there any minute. He wasnt so she attempted to call him yet again. He showed up some 30 minutes later. I called after i recieved the food and they told me they couldnt refund the order without the food. Bottom line.......never again. read more

I used to come to Gold Rush as a kid frequently. We would often go there for the soft serve, though occasionally we would be lucky enough to get the chicken dinners that they offered through our local fliers. Something that didn't occur to me until recently was the placement of the shack. I don't know if Milwaukee didn't care to separate residential and commercial businesses back in the day, but Gold Rush is oddly located on a corner in a completely residential neighborhood. The closest eatery is the Applebees several blocks away, and even that has only appeared within the past few years or so. It's literally right next door to houses, and oh what a simultaneous blessing and curse it must be to live so close to the place, positively reeking of fried chicken day in and day out, forever tempting you with chickeny goodness. I don't know how Gold Rush managed to do it, but they've been a neighborhood institution for years. The shack is almost literally nothing but a line of fryers, pumping out the fried food that they've been serving for years. I can't see how they would even have the room to create this fried chicken from scratch, so my rating is at least one star nostalgia, but Milwaukee isn't well-known for their fried chicken anyway, so at least their frying skills pass muster. They certainly make a mean soft serve, and they have the hardening chocolate that was the holy grail of my childhood. read more

Fried chicken, cooked to order. You will get your food hot of the fire! Gold Rush is 100% take out or delivery. They only have some plastic chairs inside and a bench outside (although I did manage to eat on the bench outside). A typical order will take 15 minutes for chicken and fried sides. Staff was correct about 15 minutes on the mark for our order (2 fried chx breast and a bag of crinkle cut fries for $9). Upon request, staff provided us with napkins, plates, and ketchup. The downside is that the fries are not hand cut and the chicken breading isn't remarkable in flavor in terms of herbs and spices. Overall, though, this is a good choice for fresh fried chicken. read more
