I found another classic southern diner that I love! It is Tom's Place in High Point, NC. The atmosphere is friendly, you seat yourself as if you are family. The wait staff, cooks, and customers talk and joke and laugh. It is easy to tell who is a regular. There are beautiful scenes of nature to look at in between bites. The food is simply delicious. I got the florentine benedict. The hard boiled egg was cooked perfectly. The spinach and tomato added dimensions of color, flavor, savoriness, and acidity. The english muffin was toasted just right, and it soaked in the hollandaise sauce and other flavors. I had sweet tea to drink, which went very well with the meal. I went Sunday right after church, so it was very crowded, and yet the wait staff brought everything promptly. The price was almost exactly what I expected. It was a wonderful experience! read more

So I have mixed feelings about this place. This was our first visit so we had no idea what to order. I got the grilled chicken and rice with honey mustard and my partner got the special which was beef tips and rice. My food came back really packing the honey mustard which was a bit much. For the sides their mashed potatoes were great but the deviled eggs had no flavor, the mashed cauliflower was strange tasting, and the okra had a weird texture like maybe it wasn't done all the way? I have been wanting to try this place as I heard the breakfast was solid. I have to say I was underwhelmed. Was not sure wether it was seat yourself or you get seated. Took a few minutes for someone to approach us. The place was busy and clean. It does have a late menu of options. I went for the philly steak omelette, hash browns and biscuit. My son got pancakes and scrambled eggs. Unfortunately omelette was not very good. The steak pieces were quite tough and I left several pieces. I was also disappointed in the hashbrowns they were very soggy. For me the only good food item was the biscuit which was quite tasty. My son seemed to enjoy his basic pancakes. Overall service was fine. Don't think I see any compelling reason to go back. read more

Terribly slow service whether the place is packed or near empty. I have never come here and gotten quick service and the food isn't great enough to merit the wait. This latest and last time I will ever go here, when the order finally came out it was wrong for everyone at the table and the sausage gravy was inedible. read more

Simple dining with friendly and attentive waitresses. The food is average - nothing great. I usually get a breakfast plate, even for lunch. The eggs are cooked well enough, the bacon is quite good, but the potatoes are rather bland and small in portion. You can get hash browns - which are usually not fully cooked, or home fries which are usually just done but, not quite hot and lacking any seasoning. The chef salad is really plain. If it was smaller it would be airplane food. They do not appear to be fresh but, rather catered. Everything is just a little too plain - like they are going through the motions. It's hard to explain. Still, I go frequently and consider it a safe bet when we can't decide where to eat. read more

I stopped by Tom's Place today for brunch and it was a strange experience from the minute we stepped in. There's no hostess to seat guests so you have to awkwardly figure out which table to grab as soon as one opens. Other guests will often try to beat you to the tables which makes the experience unpleasant from the start. The food is pretty average here, but the coffee is great. The prices are what you would expect from a North Carolina diner with most meals averaging $6-$8. The service was not very good which was disappointing considering we didn't even get seated by anyone. Our waitress was a little rude and messed up two orders even though only two people ordered food at our table. My main issue with Tom's Place was not being seated because that created an unsettling feeling for the entire meal. read more

Waitress never offered to get a high chair for my child. Never came back to check on us after our food was brought to us. Didn't even get asked to get my drink refilled NOT ONCE. Take your hard earned money and go find a nice brunch restaurant because Tom's Place IS NOT THE PLACE. read more

The kitchen is either understaffed or not organized to provide reasonable delivery times on even the daily specials. If one person orders from the grill it may be hot while the other persons plate order is cold from sitting somewhere ! Notice how ever waitress had blond hair ? There must be something to the old dumb blond jokes ? Nobody is smiling and looks unhappy. We sat for a least five minutes before a waitress approached us for drinks . When she did it was like " Do you know what you want yet?" I watched blonde checked with her regular customers & snubbed us. I figured everybody can have a bad day ? The bill for us two was 19.70 $ and I didn't have change for a tip. I knew I paid the waitress directly so I showed her 40 $ & ask for change. She did lay down a 10 , two 5 and five ones and walked away. I left 3 $ = 15% and said I hope you have a better day ? She did not even look at me and ignored my comment . My wife later ask me why did I tip at all because she kept your 30 cents you should have gotten back in change also ! I said I was trying to be nice but later regretted my generosity . We won't be back because there are too many other better places to eat with friendlier service. read more

I have worked in food service for the past 8 years here in NC and I am Serv Safe certified. We looked everywhere and there is no sanitation score listed at all. During our service, i personally observed the wait staff using bare hand contact, putting lemon in small bowl and brought to a neighboring table right after she picked up her pants and didnt wash her hands. There were numerous training violations. Open drinks on the top counters as well as used rags not in quat buckets. The server taking care of us had an open drink that she kept out in the open and drank while tending to her tables. Could have been a bit friendlier also. The food was ok... but not knowing their sanitation score and observing the training needs makes it easy to see why they arent as busy as nearby establishments. read more

I am an avid watcher of FOODNetwork and agree that food, atmosphere, and service make or break the dining experience. With that being said, I was very displeased with my experience. The food was cold, most of the staff was inattentive, and I felt unwelcome to be there. I almost left before my food even came from the uncomfortable atmosphere. The general setup and decor of the restaurant is quaint and comfy, nothing too extravagant but definitely a nice place to go for a group brunch or meet up. I was greeted kindly with a smile by one of the staff at the bar, and informed it was a seat yourself place. Sadly, this where all the good comes to a halt. The server I had was unfriendly and unable to assist me in decision making. She told me she was new and for every question she had to run back to someone and ask for the answer. She did not smile once and was not properly trained. Even after I put in my order, she kept coming back to ask questions that should have been asked when I was ordering the food. Now, I'm not cruel. Asking a question of doneness after ordering is fine, but to ask a few questions gets frustrating. The server should have asked all this before submitting the ticket. When you come in to a place, you want a friendly server who makes you feel wanted and at ease. I went from uncomfortable to debating whether to cancel my order and leave. When I finally got my food, she handed me the plate and walked away without asking if I needed anything else. When the food came for the booth over, she asked if they needed anything else. I felt very unwelcome by this behavior. The food was good. I had ordered the blackened ahi tuna sandwich, well done on the tuna steak. My side was the hot chips, meaning freshly made chips. They were cold instead of hot and most were soggy instead of crispy. There was non seasoning on them at all, not even a dash salt. When I was mostly done with my burger, my waitress finally came around to ask if I needed anything more. Mid meal she just left my ticket to pay at the register upside down on the table and walked away without a word. I didn't know I had to pay at the register so I asked her when she came to clean up my plate. No offering of coffee or dessert, as if she wanted me out of their to quit wasting her time. I head to the register, trying my best to forgive the waitress I had and expect to be helped by a more seasoned employee who is welcoming like the one who greeted me. There was no such luck. Several employees, including my waitress saw me and walked away. At first I passed it as then being busy, but even the loitering employees did not come to assist me. I very well could have walked out of there without paying for my food and no one would have known or cared it seems. Finally one of the free employees, who was smiling at another customer two seconds ago came to the register and the smile was gone and the transaction was done. I thanked her for her help and all and got zero response in return. Overall, my experience was terrible and I will most likely never come here again. read more

We were in town for market and came here because everything else was packed. The food was great, classic diner food with excellent sides (fried squash: yes, please.) The food came out quickly and our server, Natalie was charming, attentive and lovely. We would definitely go back. And DON'T miss the cheesecake. So excellent. read more

Decent quick breakfast. Service is quick, went before work and was in and out in 30 mins. My only con is that the food was a little too greasy and the bacon was over cooked. Unless you like crunchy bacon, order the sausage. Coffee is decent as well. read more

FABULOUS breakfast!!! I had the Country Benedict with home fries, which is a sausage patty on a country biscuit topped with poached egg and sausage gravy. Yum!!! My sister ordered a ton of stuff because she wanted to try it all! LOL! She got the classic Eggs Benedict, hash browns, grits, and either pancakes or French toast, I don't remember. Everything was really good, including the coffee. Service was impeccable, and our waitress was the sweetest!!! We had a great time chatting with her, and really enjoyed our meal. We were in town visiting and furniture shopping and completely enjoyed our entire trip. High Point is a very quaint, very charming, VERY Southern town and I would love to go back to enjoy more of their famous hospitality. Oh, and the prices at Tom's Place cannot be beat. Hometown cooking and great service. The meatloaf was delightful, the okra fried to perfection, and the squash a crispy delight. And the cheesecake! A (French) macaroon like crust, delicious flavor, and perfect texture. Our waitress, Natalie, was brand new but attentive, informed, and kind. Kristen was our waitress, and she served us very well. However, the food was a disappointment. We ordered the steak & eggs and Benedict florentine. The steak was a little gamey; I put a lot of black pepper on my portion and the spinach had a weird taste to it. My spouse walked away with an upset stomach; he thought it to be the steak. We always share our food; meaning we ate the same things. I took off the spinach after tasting it. My stomach isn't as upset as my spouse is. I am actually shocked at the negative reviews people have written about this place. I've been eating here for years, and have found the staff to be courteous and the food to be delicious. They have the best eggs benedict around, and their steak and cheese sandwich is amazing. They should win an award for their homemade quiche. I waited tables throughout college, and know that running a restaurant is truly organized chaos. Situations can go downhill at the drop of a hat. I'm positive the owner and his staff would be more than willing to right a wrong if they were made aware of it at the time rather than seeing the negative review on Yelp. Keep in mind that more people complain than people compliment. So, I'm going to compliment. This is a wonderful place to eat, and I will continue to dine here. read more

Always loved Toms place. Chris makes everyone feel at home. They are always striving to improve and keep the place updated. Never disappointed with any meal. Just wish they had longer days. They have a pretty good breakfast, and I enjoy the retro feel of the place. I remember going there as a child when it was Carter's and it really hasn't changed that much inside. The food is pretty average, but again the breakfast is solid. I do suggest they cook their sausage a little longer, and they should consider going with Neeses which is a better quality product. read more

Heard about the restaurant from a friend. I was in high point for a triathlon, and hungry for breakfast food. I ordered waffle, eggs, bacon and a pancake. The waffle was quite possibly the best I've ever had (they even brought me the whip cream can to the table!!) everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and service was great. Tom's is always great. Most consistent food in High Point and great variety. We always go for breakfast and lunch. They are now doing dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. It was really good. We had the chicken fettuccine with mushrooms and broccoli, spaghetti with meat sauce, and chicken n waffles. Liked everything. And it came with decent side salads. read more
