Stopped in for lunch one day in search of FRIED CHICKEN. Not just any old fried chicken but GOOD fried chicken. They are located in a nice little spot with ample parking and it's easy accessible. The interior is simple but clean. Plenty of seating. The ladies who work here are very friendly and helpful, came around a few times to check on me, offered fried side to go with the greens , offered a refill on my sweet tea. Great service! About the food. Probably the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the area. I really can't judge on that because I haven't sampled other fried chicken in the vicinity but based on my own research of sampling fried chicken all over North Carolina, I feel confident in my assumption. It was fried just right. It was SEASONED. It had a very nice batter that was crunchy and the chicken in the inside was tender and juicy. Every bite was tender and juicy. These ladies should teach a cooking class on how to make fried chicken-to other restaurants. The SWEET POTATOES were perfectly cooked and flavored in butter and cinnamon. You could eat it as a dessert. But not overly sweet. Just right. The GREENS were tender and seasoned perfectly. Greens and fried side with their delicious CORNBREAD could be a meal in itself. The SWEET TEA-perfect! All around, best home cooked food/soul food you can get. I will be back and I highly recommend for true SOUTHERN COMFORT food. read more

Lunch was good. I had the fish, turnip greens and potato salad. My dad got the hamburger steak, greens and yams. We ate lunch for $20. Very reasonably priced. Cash only! The potato salad was extremely sweet, not how I normally like potsto salad but it was good and I ate it. The yams were also overly sweet. The juice was like sweet sugar syrup. My dad is a diabetic and couldn't eat them, way too much sugar. If you like diabetes in a bag, get the yams. The greens were good, kinda tasted like they were from the can. The turnip pieces were cut extremely small and perfectly square like what's in cans. I can't say for sure but they were good. One thing that I did not like was that the lady fixing the plates did not have on gloves. She was handling the corn bread with her bare hands, putting it on the plates. I really loved my most recent breakfast at Becky's and Mary's. They have amazing pancakes, eggs, potatoes, and toast. Ordering is simple and happens at the register. They are CASH ONLY- so, be prepared! The dining space is casual, and they have a steady stream of regulars. In spite of often being busy, my food has always arrived pretty quickly. I can't think of a place that does authentic southern cooking better. I've heard their fried chicken is incredible. Was looking for a diner-esque place while in town for a wedding. The staff was so friendly and even the other customers! Maybe because we were looking at the menu for so long they could tell we weren't local. It was so heartwarming to see everyone who walked in seemed to know someone in the place. Don't see many places like this anymore. But the food was great, good portion sizes, prices were reasonable if not a steal, and again service was awesome. There's not enough I can say for this hidden gem. They have daily specials but I cannot go and not get the fried chicken and potato salad. I'm not a huge fan of potato salad but this knocks my socks off every time. Breakfast is amazing! It can get kinda crowded but it's so worth the wait. This is just a great place to eat. From the pancakes that have been featured in Our State magazine to the huge slab of fried bologna or fresh cooked fried potatoes with onions it's fantastic. They have no soft drinks. Basically you have the choice of water, sweet tea, lemonade or you can get an Arnold Palmer. The staff at the front of the house have always been super friendly. You will almost always see Becky or Mary inside working and they frequently come out and will chat for a few mins. read more

And when I walked into Mary's (sic) and Becky's and breathed the air inside, I was whisked away to halcyon days in my Great Grandma Mabel's kitchen and to other country homes and restaurants my parents took me to when I was growing up... and to the soothing and comforting aromas of country cooking that permeated those places. O! Those memories! You order at the counter and they bring you your food or call you up to pick it up. I did not understand how this was determined, but I was told mine would be brought to me, so I felt special. The employees I interacted with were sweet and kind, and I ordered eggs, bologna, grits, and sweet tea. Eggs: I had them scrambled, but was not given a choice. I don't know if they give you a choice. It doesn't matter--they were some of the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. I don't know what they did to them, but they were great. Grits: outstanding consistency and very good flavor Bologna: perfectly fried, but the flavor was just average Sweet tea: excellent. Nice blend of tea flavor and sweetness The place is very loud inside, having no soft materials whatsoever to absorb sound waves. The walls are adorned with plenty of Christian writings and sayings and prints honoring African American culture. If a restaurant has been around, in the same spot, since 1973, it has to be doing a lot right - quality, pricing, & service. It is located about a block off of N. Centennial, just beyond where it crosses Kivett Drive.There is a nice sized gravel lot to the left of the plain looking building. There is no large sign, only a small one in a front window to the left of the entrance that identifies this place as Becky's & Mary's Soul Food Restaurant. The inside is also plain, showing some age and wear, with 3 or 4 booths on the right side wall, and 10 or 12 tables fill out the remaining seating area. This is a fast food type setup - you order, pay, and get your drink at the register, and grab a seat, waiting for your name to be called. Orders are ready fairly quickly as long as the chicken is ready - usually not ready until about 11:30. The other items are in trays on a steam table, a little like Pete's Grill in Gibsonville, and order filling moves quickly. There will usually be 3 meat choices, and 4 or 5 side dishes. Fried Chicken seems to be a constant offering - others include Meat Loaf, Fried Pork Chops, Stewed Chicken, Collards, Yams, Potato Salad, and Mac & Cheese. You can get a Meat & 1, or 2, or even 3. Fried Chicken is absolutely excellent, with great flavor, and a thin, crisp skin that is much like that at Price's Chicken Coop in Charlotte - and the chicken is nearly as good as that. Interestingly enough, my order of dark meat included a leg and a back - first time at a restaurant that I've been served a back piece - it was good, if a little lean. The Meat Loaf is dense, and very tasty, with a rather thick coating of tomato sauce on the top - which can easily be scrapped off, if you choose. The Mac & Chhese is home made, and very good - plenty of cheese. The Yams are very, very sweet - a bit too much so for my taste. The Cornbread is super - thin, nice crust, and not at all sweet. The rolls are simply commercial rolls which they toast slightly on a sandwich press - I'd pass. Plates run $6 to $7, and portions are adequate. They serve a mixture of Sweet Tea & Lemonade that is simply killer - I highly recommend it. They serve breakfast with the usual items, and also include Livermush and Salmon & Eggs. The folks here are super friendly and they work at a somewhat relaxed pace, but things get done. read more

Absolutely the best meal ever ! Family of 6 ate for $56 and had to take home a large bag of food due to not being able to eat it all ! Servings are enormous and the food is cooked to perfection. Friendly staff. Some had chicken, some had ribs and some had meatloaf all with various sides. ALL were good !!!! The corn bread and nanner pudding were the bomb !!! If I could provide a higher rating I would. We are from out of town but next time in High Point, I will be coming back here for another meal !! Do yourself a favor and try this place. Coming from Compton Ca, I was in the city of High Point NC wanting some soul food, at the top of Siris search was the establishment, I said let's go, we'll I wasn't disappointed the establishment was clean, they portion was large ( took me 2 days eat). We got both entree's fried chicken and the pork chops, the only complaint I have is, the greens were sweet ( hadn't had them like that before ) and I think they might have been out the can. I'll go back when I'm on that side of the country , but don't think I'll have the sweet collards. read more

Great, neighborhood soul food. Becky's & Mary's has been around for a long time. No frills, just good home cooked food. They only accept cash! The lunch/dinner menu is usually different every day but you really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. My favorites are the stew beef and rice and the fried pork chops. All of the sides I've had were good, mac and cheese, cabbage, yams. The portion size is good as well, I can usually eat my order for 2 meals. Employees are always friendly and the service is usually quick except Sunday afternoons when it seems to be the busiest. read more

The fried chicken is a big draw here, and I waited a full 25 minutes for the first batch to come from the kitchen. I found the crispy, crunchy crust to be incredibly salty, but the meat was good. The meatloaf is bestrewn with bits of green pepper and onion and enrobed in a hybrid ketchup-tomato sauce. The macaroni and cheese is not very cheesy, saucy or special. It's lightly coated with a thin cheese sauce that sinks to the bottom of the plate. The potato salad is the best of all the sides I tried. Mayonnaise-based with large pieces of hard-boiled egg, bits of bell pepper, pimiento, pickle relish and potatoes, it's the salad you hope is at cookouts you attend in the summer. The turnip greens tasted as if someone accidentally put a little too much brown sugar in the pot, rendering them too sweet. Between you and me, everything tastes better the next day. Get your meal to go. Refrigerate it and revisit it the next day. The leftovers taste 100% better reheated, which is generally impossible with other styles of cuisine. The chicken I thought too salty turned into the perfectly flavored picnic chicken I had not had in a long time. The too-sweet greens became mellowed with an underlying twinge of the earthiness that make greens so favorable. I don't recommend reheating the rolls or the cornbread, but everything else is fair game. read more

Place is great. Found it on here so I tried it, I was meeting a client here and neither of us knew of the place. After I went in I realized it was cash only, and I had no cash. Some old black guy said "don't worry, you can pay me back later" I explained I would be busy, he said come back tomorrow, I said I'll be busy then too, he said "you get me back when you can brother" Wow! How nice. My client walked in about that time and we enjoyed a fantastic breakfast. This was a Thursday, I finally went back and paid them back plus some the following Monday and I look forward to going back here to eat! Such nice folks with good old fashion cooking.
