I drove a little farther today for lunch and got my food to-go so I could make it back in time and eat at my desk. I've seen posts from fellow Yelpers about this restaurant and then I saw it on the @yelpnctriad list for Black History Month. Let me tell you, it was worth the extra minutes of driving!! I'd be in trouble if I lived near here. I couldn't even decide on the entree - I wanted all 3: Chicken pie, meatloaf, or fish and chicken fry! My heart said meatloaf in the end. I chose Mac n' cheese and black eyed pea with it. With it, you can have a roll or corn bread. I also got the Banana pudding because I can't pass up any banana pudding. There were lots of thin slices of fresh banana in this pudding! My server, Danesha, also had to add that they had carrot cake. Uhh!!! Everything is scratch made, in-house. I devoured the meatloaf and Mac n' cheese. They were done just right. Everything was done just right and I got a tummy full of comfort southern cooking. Thank you for a Good Friday lunch! Danesha, thanks for being you and being so nice and helpful. Plentiful seating inside the restaurant that reaches into another huge room. Everything kept very clean.

The finest comfort food I've found
Karl K.

Maya Angelou once said "the best comfort food will always be greens, cornbread, and fried chicken". Well, I needed some more comfort food today, a cold and rainy Junepril 16th, so I headed to Mary B's Southern Kitchen. I took Professor Angelou's suggestion. She was right. This is actually my second trip to Mary B's, so I have a lot of items to discuss with you. Fried chicken: outstanding. Amazing. Delicious batter, moist interior. Perfect. Country style steak and gravy: tasty with excellent flavors. Mashed potatoes: they're real, and they're spectacular. (Seinfeld reference If you don't already know). Pinto beans: so many places just dump a can of pinto beans into a pot, heat them up, stir them up, and dole them out onto your plate. Mary B's puts some effort into it and adds some wonderful seasonings. Probably the best pinto beans I've ever had. Lima beans: see pinto beans. Collard greens: if I do say so myself, I make an awesome mess of collard greens. These are just as good but in a different way. Mac n cheese: very tasty, reminiscent of the recipes that were ubiquitous at church potlucks back in the day. Cabbage: seasoned nicely and cooked perfectly. Cornbread: good taste but a little too dry. This is far and away the best southern comfort food I've had outside of my own family's kitchens (nod to great Grandma Mabel, Grandma Cleo, my momma, and, of course, ME!) So next time you are up for some genuine southern comfort food, I strongly suggest heading to Mary B's. I hope Dr. Angelou did.

This place is definitely open. And B doesn't stand for brown. They've got green beans, collards, carrots, limas and more. Southern comfort food in its simplest form. Nothing gourmet, just home cookin' where good food is never accidental. And the price is right.

Good food!! Stew, limas & fried chicken!!

Great home cooking! Generous portions & nice personable owners!

This place... is one of our top two places in Jamestown. (The other is Simply Thai right across the…read morestreet.) Actually in the surrounding area too. Between excellent service, from the host to the kitchen staff, and being a bright, cheery place decorated in a modern farmhouse feel (only complaint is the HARD seating), we love this place. The food is always delicious and seasoned perfectly with FLAVOR. For the appetizer, the Salad Pizza is absolutely scrumptious and was recommended by our server our first visit here last year. Honestly, it keeps bringing us back. The flavors are incredible. It has feta, mozzarella, topped with organic greens, shaved onions, tossed in a lemon/dijon dressing with shaved parmesan. It's a flavor bomb in the mouth. The meatloaf, is to die for. If you're a meatloaf eater this is for you. It's so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. Melts in your mouth and the sauce on top is the perfect blend of sweet and savory to top it off. For my two sides this time I chose the fried brussels sprouts and the greens. The greens are always seasoned perfectly and the brussels sprouts were crispy and full of flavor. They tasted even better dipped in my meatloaf sauce so that was a win-win. My boyfriend had the special which was short ribs. For his two sides, he had greens and green beans. The short rib was perfectly tender and absolutely delicious full of flavor and moist for him. The green beans and the greens were also perfect as well full of flavor, just enough fat and butter. It's a great little date spot or a family dinner. They also have outdoor seating covered with umbrellas. There's a bar inside with a TV if you choose to go watch sports and the food here is always on point full of flavor and makes you want to come back and try more things on the menu. You can't go wrong at southern roots.

The waitress was friendly and polite, and the place itself was nice and clean. It was a little loud inside, but nothing too crazy. Definitely one of my go-to spots!

Magnolia Blue was one of my favorite High Point eateries. Whether I went for weekend brunch or New…read moreYear's Eve dinner, I never had a bad meal there. It closed in early February for what were supposed to be renovations, only to reopen months later with a new name and a new concept, trading slightly upscale Southern for more upscale Italian. In some regards, this makes sense - it fills a void created by the closure of Lulu and Blu - but in other ways, it's a massive gamble. My wife and I went for our anniversary dinner, and while it was an overall pleasant experience, it also made us miss Magnolia. The higher price point is the chief culprit. Otto and Blue offers pastas in the $20s and entrees starting in the $30s, bread and olive oil not included. While we were celebrating an occasion that merited such a splurge, it's hard to imagine the restaurant remaining competitive at those prices once the sheen of newness wears off. Look past that, however, and Otto and Blue shines in both ambiance and service. It's classy without being stuffy, and the dark turquoise tones suit it well. Allison, a Magnolia Blue mainstay, was personable and attentive and provided excellent service throughout the meal. Otto and Blue's menu offers apps, salads, pastas, and entrees. It's predominantly Italian albeit with a few options for the steak-and-potatoes crowd. The dishes range from recognizably classic (rigatoni Bolognese) to conspicuously elevated (halibut piccatta). After mulling over several offerings, we went with the bread service, tagliatelle, and duck cacciatore. The food ranged from fairly good to outstanding. While $9 for bread is a tough pill to swallow, they executed it as well as they possibly could have: a hot, fresh ciabatta with tasty herb butter, olive relish, and a quality olive oil-balsamic combo as accompaniments. The cacciatore boasted a pair of duck legs confit, and while I'm usually no fan of dark meat poultry, these were prepared well with crispy skin and plenty of meat. For a typically hearty dish, the sauce seemed light (and a bit subdued), but that could be a consequence of serving atop polenta (more absorbent) rather than pasta. Speaking of pastas and sauces, the tagliatelle hit a nice balance of creamy and zesty without swimming in its white wine lemon sauce. Surprisingly, the highlight of the meal ended up being the dessert that Otto and Blue kindly offered as an anniversary gift. A scoop of vanilla bean gelato came adorned with a Biscoff cookie, a drizzle of olive oil, and a dash of salt. If salt and especially olive oil on ice cream seem vaguely blasphemous, don't knock it until you try it. Each bite was thoroughly delicious. It's a given that good food doesn't come cheap, but even so, Otto and Blue has no margin for error to justify what it charges. On food alone, it was close but not quite there. However, the overall experience made it worthwhile, and I have no regrets about dining here.

The fried okra was cooked right and not greasy. The potato salad surprised me in a good way, it had slices of bacon in it, which was different but actually really good. The banana pudding was good and creamy, and the peach cobbler was good too. Portions are generous. It's a lot of food for the price and definitely worth it. Service was good,we were in and out. About the food. Probably the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the area. I really can't judge on that because I haven't sampled other fried chicken in the vicinity but based on my own research of sampling fried chicken all over North Carolina, I feel confident in my assumption. It was fried just right. It was SEASONED. It had a very nice batter that was crunchy and the chicken in the inside was tender and juicy. Every bite was tender and juicy. These ladies should teach a cooking class on how to make fried chicken-to other restaurants. The SWEET POTATOES were perfectly cooked and flavored in butter and cinnamon. As before, I give this a resounding 5 stars. The menu has changed a little bit since I last wrote a review, and I've tried some new items. I have yet to try anything that I didn't like. My new go-tos are the raging chicken salad on a croissant and the berries and cream pastries. If you read my previous review, you will see that I was working up the nerve to try the chicken salad, because I'm somewhat meat-averse at times, and also don't like heavily mayonnaised foods, which is a big risk with any of the so-called "salad" items (potato, chicken, tuna, etc.) in life. I can now confirm that the chicken salad is 1) not overly mayonnaised and 2) made from not-gross chicken (I have no further explanation for this, but picky eaters will know what I mean). It's relatively light, has a nice texture, and is flavorful. It is one of my favorite weekend lunch items (or weekday, if I'm working remotely and in the area) now, not just here but in general. The berries and cream pastry is delicious and I would eat everyday, or even multiple times a day, if my figure and my wallet could afford it. Sweet, rich, flaky. Definitely one of my favorite dessert / sweet snack items currently. I also got a birthday cake made here and it was absolutely gorgeous (and delicious, obviously). Very well executed and totally got my vision. As I said before, there is plenty of seating inside (outside too!) and the volume level is perfect -- lots of people coming through, but quiet enough I can read, study, or do work. We spend several hours at a time in here some weekends. Highly recommend to anyone in the area or passing through.
