Taste like cafeteria cooked southern style food. Soup needs more seasoning a little on the bland side. Staff is quick to service and food comes out quick. Theres alot of seating available to dine in. We stopped by for lunch at Southern Lunch in Uptown Lexington. Very busy and the food was very good. Lots of choices. I think the whole experience has improved under new management. We found a booth right away and the server took our drink order. I got the chicken salad sandwich combo with one side: collards. Oh, Southern Lunch. This place is the definition of the name. Their specialities are all things southern. Nestled alongside the train tracks, it's a small place, but it is hoppin'! I ordered from the specials board that they have posted in all dining areas. I had the chicken casserole, apples, and macaroni and cheese. My husband had his usual, a non-menu item called "Duck's Chicken" with fries and green beans. It is a deliciously breaded chicken cut into pieces like nuggets/bites. Paired with some ranch and they are to die for. My chicken casserole was some that reminded me of church potlucks after Sunday morning preaching. It was that warm and fuzzy feeling. Paired with feeling like I was being waited on by someone's Mema, it just gave me all the comforting feels. There was enough to feed three people and I felt so bad for not bringing the leftovers home, but we were going to be out and about all day. This is a hot spot for lunch in the area, especially with folks from uptown and a lot of blue-collar folks so you may have a short wait, but you'll be glad you waited! the menú is simple well cooked Southern food. It was busy and the food still came out on time. The crowd is much older and have obviously been going there for a long time. It was my first time going there and the food was delicious I ordered the Southern fried chicken with 2 sides I choose mac n cheese and french fries. My husband had the catfish with greens and cabbage which as a Southerner he really enjoyed. The food was good my only complaint if any is feeling out of place as a brown New Yorker and that the food while great wasn't very seasoned. OMG slap your grandma country style food! Pardon the expression but if you are in the mood for authentic southern style food and hospitality this is exactly what you are looking for. This is what I grew up on with my grandma in the kitchen. Delicious and full of flavor. I had the fried chicken with pickle beets and scallop tomatoes (stewed tomatos). Yesterday I decided to go to Lexington and check out this place I found on Google Maps. I got there and was a little confused at first because three different buildings had the sign for this place. When I found it, it was packed. I had to sit at the bar and then there were people waiting to get in. I ordered the fried chicken plate and was shocked to discover it came with three pieces, when two is normally what I'm expecting. I really thought the chicken was seasoned and cooked very well and the sides were really nice too. I love that they have the option for rice, and also that they used real silverware instead of plastic. I can definitely see myself going back. read more

Visiting my 93 year old mother in Salisbury we live in Austin where it's all bbq... I googled chicken and dumplings and thankfully Southern Lunch came up. The minute we got seated Shae came over to get our drink orders and my mom was having trouble deciding so 5 minutes later she came back with small samples of the daily specials and chicken and dumplings. Well we ended up with of course me getting them and then my mom, husband got grilled pork chops super moist. Wow Mac n Cheese and Limas were delish. Today was my first time dining here. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a down home, country restaurant so close to home. We went around 1:30 and it was still quite full. The booths were filled with happy folks who seemed to be very comfortable there. There is a good selection of food from country, seafood, pasta, etc. They also offer daily specials displayed on the white boards. I had the Reuben sandwich combo and enjoyed it very much. Their sweet tea is perfect (if you know anything about sweet tea in the south) and the server very accommodating and kind. I learned as we were leaving that there is quite a history to this restaurant. I cannot say enough good things. You don't find good food like this that often. Spectacular! The service was great! Sweetest young lady ever and very helpful. The restaurant is extremely clean and decorated with train station memorabilia since it is in the district of the old train depot. The people are very friendly and thankful to have you there. The owner, Mr. Lohr came to our table and talked for about 30 minutes. He gave us the history of the restaurant. A large wall mural depicts the time when his grandfather started the restaurant in the early 1900s and the train pulling in next to the depot. So interesting and admirable to see a 3rd generation business still going strong. A restaurant in business for almost 100 years speaks loudly! They offer breakfast, country cooking (all kinds), chicken, wings, seafood (looked scrumptious!), burgers, fries, hot dogs, hoagies, salads, and some Italian. They also have daily specials. It's called Southern Lunch but I was here this morning for breakfast. This is not fancy. This is not haute cuisine. This is food for locals. Service was friendly and efficient. I sat at the counter rather than wait for a table and I was taken care of well, with refills of my coffee quickly. I opted for the cheese omelet and it comes with *two* sides plus toast. I chose the home fries and, for some strange reason, gravy. It worked out perfectly well. The omelet was a decent size and filled with cheese. Plenty of home fries (cubed potatoes, deep fried) and with the gravy poured on top of them, perfect. No complaints here at all. This is simple food without frills. I have wanted to come eat here for a long time, but I do not get to Lexington that often. Today was the day and the wife and I arrived just before 1130AM. We parked in a parking lot across the street and saw a building that said "Southern Lunch" in big letters on the side. We walked over and found the door locked. This wasn't the restaurant, it is just some other building that has the name painted on the side for some reason. We found the right place on the corner to the left. We got a booth near the entrance. The service was friendly and quick and the menu is quite diverse. My wife got a veggie plate and I got country style steak. We finished with some cobbler and everything was very good. So why not five stars? While I was sitting in the booth facing the front counter, a maintenance man was working on one of the stools at the counter. He was kneeling on the floor with his back to me. I couldn't believe what was happening. This guy is showing about six inches of his butt crack to the entire restaurant and I have a front row seat. Servers are walking past and a man that looked like he might be the owner was standing behind the counter and either nobody saw this or they are just accustomed to it. It was a very disgusting display. I am trying to eat and this is right in the center of my field of vision. In all my years I have never seen anything like this. It really ruined my appetite. I'm not talking five seconds, it was almost ten minutes and I just couldn't eat while this was happening. It mercifully came to an end and after i recovered from the trauma, I was able to resume my meal. They should really be more careful with things like this. read more

If I had an old Southern granny, I'd guess that she'd cook up pretty much what I had for lunch today. Southern Lunch is a delightful old school place just off the main street in Lexington. If you aren't from here or don't use Yelp, you'd hardly stumble across it. That would be shame since they've been serving tasty Southern classics since the 20's. The interior is basic, with well worn Formica tables and stacking chairs, but the welcome is warm and genuine. I sat at the counter because the counter is always the best place to sit, duh. Menu-wise, expect nothing less than the finest comfort classics - fried chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, chicken pie and something called a "breadburger" (I didn't ask). Meals come with 2 or 3 veggie choices and a bread product. As in any fine Southern establishment, there are a huge assortment of veggies to pick from. I opted for fried chicken (white), creamed potatoes with gravy and broccoli casserole. I don't know if I've eaten a better meal for under $10. My chicken was a very meaty piece with perfectly crispy skin and juicy insides. I normally scorn chicken skin but ate all of it here with no shame (ok, a little shame). The broccoli casserole was delicious - nothing I could ever get at home which makes me sad. The potatoes are instant which is my only nitpick here, but they are served with a very tasty brown gravy laced with little meaty slivers of beef. The service was lightning fast and I got called "honey" like 15 times. Everyone seems to be a regular and know the staff and one another. If I'm even remotely close to Southern Lunch again, I'd come back. True Southern food classics and true Southern hospitality. You can't do better, especially at these prices. read more

When I was putting together our after tax season restaurant bucket list, this old school Southern diner was near the top of that list. This branch of the Lohr family has been been serving food on Railroad Street since 1925, with interruptions twice due to fire damage, the last in 2007. Our last visit was shortly after they reopened in 2008, iirc. Food simply does not get more Southern than what is served up here - standards like Fried Chicken, Country Style Steak, Chicken Pie, Chicken & Dumplings, Meatloaf, Pork Chops, Country Ham, Chicken Livers & Gizzards, with sides like Collards, Creamed Potatoes, Mac & Cheese, Pintos, Cabbage, Fried Okra, and Potato Salad, and even more. An entree with 2 sides, drink, & bread choice runs $7.95 to $8.40. They offer a nice array of sandwiches, including their unique Breadburger, and they serve a full Southern breakfast, though sadly, Liver Pudding or Mush is not included, but Chicken Fried Steak or Brains is offered. And breakfast is inexpensive - 2 eggs with bacon, drink, bread, and 2 of the following - Hash Browns, Home Fries, Grits, Tater Tots, Grilled Potatoes Gravy, Peaches, or Buttered Apples - all for $6.50. We opted for two classics on our lunch visit - Fried Chicken and Country Style Steak, with sides of Creamed Potatoes, Pintos, Fried Okra, Mac & Cheese, and Cabbage, along with Cornbread and a Roll. The chicken was superb, moist and tender, but with a nicely seasoned, crusty skin. The CS Steak was equally good, a large portion of tender beef, smothered in a rich, thick brown gravy. I don't know of a restaurant that prepares those 2 dishes any better, and I've eaten my share of both. The Mac & Cheese was also excellent, with an abundance of sharp cheese flavor, and the Fried Okra was there, as well. The Cabbage was almost as good, well seasoned with some crunch to it.The Pintos and Creamed Potatoes were good, though not up to the level of the other items. The Cornbread was nice, with just a touch of sweetness, and the roll was pretty standard. The service was as good as the food, and with a pleasant attitude and manner. This is a true Southern diner, serving food cooked in the traditional manner, sparing no calories, ignoring allergies, phobias, and fads. Had breakfast this morning at Southern Lunch. Sausage patty, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, gravy, pancake and ice tea ($5.95) Gravy wasn't homemade, but was pretty good over the delicious hash browns. Eggs cooked just right (over medium), and our waitress set a pitcher of tea on our table and it was excellent. Pancake was also very good. All of this, with a drink included for $5.95 is a pretty good deal. On my next visit, I tried the country fried steak for breakfast. It was okay. Some bites were chewy, while some were tender.
