I'd read the Yelp reviews and was ready for poor service and mediocre food but was pleasantly surprised with good, friendly service and a delicious meal. I had the smothered chicken breast with coleslaw and a baked potato as my two sides. The chicken was very delicious, perfectly cooked and juicy. The onion and pepper topping was chopped small which made it easier to eat. The potato was large and done and the slaw really good, a bit tangy but good. My only complaint would be the dirty tablecloth and messy menu. My guess is they leave the black tablecloths on all day but ours really needed changing. There was caked on food spots all over it. Came here for a company Xmas party with no expectations, except to just have a good time with my colleagues, which I did. Other than that, I will never come back to this place. Wasn't sure what to expect with the food, but I guess my interpretations of certain dishes are not the same at this restaurant. I hate it when I go to a restaurant and feel like I would have been better off cooking the dish at home and it would have tasted 10x better! When I think of Oysters Rockefeller, I picture oysters on a half-shell, topped with a breadcrumb mixture and an herby garlic butter, then broiled. It's a given that there won't be actual fresh seafood here because of the area, but here, the oysters come without the shell, topped with the breadcrumb mixture, all placed on top of some cooked/chopped spinach. Weird, but I ate it, and glad I did, because my actual dinner took forever and was NOT what I would call a crab cake. Had there been a description of what the crab cake is made of, I would have gone with another dish and could have possibly enjoyed dinner. Anyway, to me, if you're going to call a crab cake, a crab cake, you better have some REAL crab in it. Man...it was ALL imitation crabmeat. I'll eat me some imitation crabmeat at home in some other dishes, but not when I ordered a crab cake from a restaurant menu. Smh...I ordered a broiled crab cake dinner with twice-baked potato and a garden salad (no complaints on the salad thank goodness). How bout my food came out when everybody else in our party was just about done with their meals. My first thought was, "I really waited all this time for this?! I should've cancelled my order when I was patiently waiting while everyone else was eating!" When it finally came out, the "crab cake" was served in a small round shallow metal ramekin. It was basically an imitation crabmeat salad topped with old bay seasoning and broiled. It was toooooo salty and mayo-naisey. I had a few bites and was done. The twice-baked potato? My mind is picturing half a potato that's been hollowed out, where the inside has been mixed with cheese and seasonings, then put back in the potato shell, and baked a 2nd time. This version is just mashed potatoes topped with melted cheese. My dinner was so disappointing. Everyone else got steak, chicken, and pork dishes and they seemed to enjoy their food. 1 other person in our party got their food after mine, which was a homemade lasagna according to their menu. I asked how their food was....they said it was cold...like they just took it out the fridge cold. Unacceptable! I understand if the place is short-staffed, obviously there will be a delay in food service, but food should not be served cold to your patrons. Before I started this review, I was reading previous reviews, and it seems my experience is no different from others who came to this establishment in the past 5 years. The food, the service, management...doesn't seem like there's been any improvements, so someone needs to make some changes if they expect this place to continue business. I have no complaints about our waitress. When we arrived and started to order drinks, she let us know right off the bat that she was working solo for our party and others, while also bartending at the same time - ok understood. When it came time to pay, they had issues with 1 of their kiosks close to where we were seated, so we waited forever and decided to go to the front and pay. I let the lady know that I understand they are busy and short-staffed, but I did not enjoy my crab cake meal that took forever to make. I told her the crab cake was not good and that it was too salty, so I barely ate it. She said it was just made the night before and didn't understand why it wasn't good or was too salty. I told her there was too much old bay seasoning on it, and she came up with some excuse that if you're not used to old bay seasoning, then you wouldn't know. Well, I wasn't looking for any excuses. I'm just tryna let you know this is how my food experience was...plus it not having any real crabmeat in it, but I didn't even mention that part. If you have driven down 52 in Lexington, you have probably noticed Yarborough's on the side of the highway, especially if it was at night time when it probably looked like there was a packed crowd over there! After seeing that scene many times, we finally decided to take a trip there for dinner one night and were delightful surprised by the food and have been back with others a handful of times since! Yarborough's on the inside is about what you would expect from looking at the inside, it is certainly older. The carpet has probably been there since I was born. The chairs may have been as well (they are comfortable though). There are many different room, almost like it was a house at one time, which probably helps keep the noise level down a bit and it is slightly dim inside. Sort of an old school welcoming feel I guess I would describe it. As for the food, the menu is very large. They have a ton of options and everything I have had has been pretty good. I have never been blown away by anything, but it is also consistently good which counts for a lot in my book compared to a lot of places. A few of the items that stand out a bit are some of the different seafood options and the fried chicken which are very good. It does not hurt that the prices are very reasonable for a place trying to be just slightly more upscale than your regular dinner hole in the wall joint. Yarbourgh's is a great spot for a casual, relaxed, yet still decent dinner, and has worked well with us for some small groups for birthdays and such as well! read more

Special early Father's Day dinner, the service was exceptional and the food equally as impressive. An entire beef filet for four (could feed six), two sides each including onion rings, twice baked potatoes, salads and yeast rolls rounded out the meal. Went there tonight with some work colleagues. 2 of us had the filet and it was literally one of the best I ever had. They hand cut the steaks when you order them. The place has been here since my mom was a kid (I'm 56) and is a bit dated but who cares. 2nd or 3rd gen people running it now, and super nice. This is another of those places that we've intended to grab a meal at, but something always seemed to get in the way, but yesterday we made it happen. It's located on a service type road off the I-85 Bypass, and is a bit tricky to find the first time. The building is big, and more than a bit plain and rather worn - in fact, from the outside it looks more like a manufacturing building than a restaurant. On the inside, it is a bit dated, and smaller that the outside would leave you to believe. This is an upscale steakhouse in the evening, while it offers simpler fare for lunch. We chose the Fried Chicken with Fried Okra and Mac & Cheese, and the Salt & Pepper Catfish with Fries and Slaw. The time out of the kitchen was very slow for lunch service, well over 25 minutes, and this though we were the only customers in the restaurant for the entire time it took for our order to reach us. Once received, we were pleased to find that almost without exception the food was excellent. The chicken was tender, moist, tasty, and with a perfectly fried outer crust. The okra was very, very good, and the M & C was nice, but the cheese sauce was a bit thin. The bread served with this entree was a biscuit, and it was exceptional - full of flavor, dense yet not at all heavy - the kind of biscuit meant to be loaded with a nice amount of country ham, with a bit of mayo or mustard. I chose the catfish on the waitress' advice, and it was an excellent suggestion.There were 3 large pieces of moist and tender, fresh tasting fish, fried very well. The fries were nice, and the slaw was special - moderately chopped cabbage, a touch of mayo, plenty of pepper, and the smallest touch of fresh onion. The bread here was Hush Puppies, and these were simply super. We finished the meal with house made Blackberry Cobbler, with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream. This was a nice dessert, which avoided the flaws in most cobblers - too much liquid, too much sugar. Would we return? Yes, despite the sloooow kitchen time - probably would order a Tossed Salad to munch on while the kitchen unlimbered. Some places age gracefully and have an atmosphere that goes along with that , this isn't one of those places. At some point you need to put some money back into the business. Dinner was amazing when we went. Differently recommended the crab cakes (boiled), fried green beans and spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer. For our meals we all had hand cut filets that didn't need anything- just your fork, for the side the twice mashed potatoes and greens beans were just as great! My son took me to Yarborough's for my birthday. I had never been so I was looking forward to it. We waited a while for the waitress to come to our table. We put in our drink order an went ahead and placed our food order. We had a group who sat across from us who hadn't even ordered their drinks. As we sat there I noticed others come in. I noticed that they we being served their food. The table beside us received their food as well even thought we order before them and they were a large group. As the table across from us finished their meal and ready to go I ask the waitress if they were short staff. She said a few people was out. After 1hr and 10 minutes we received our food. I told the waitress I was very disappointed in my service. The owner came to our table to tell us that she had to cook my chicken for 18 minutes. So I ask her what was she doing the rest of the 40 minutes. I was very calm never raising my voice as not to cause a problem. She said she had to cook someone's else's chicken first and then mine. I was thinking to myself Who's chicken are you cooking. We were here first and you can't cook but one chicken at a time. Trying to remain calm she said this is not Hardies and fast food folks. So she made the mistake but it was our fault. We will never go back there! No reason to be rude to your customers when they had nothing to do with it. read more

Lord have mercy this place was woefully bad. I have driven by it for years and today decided to drop in for lunch. A dead give away was the 4,000 items on the menu. I got the ground beef steak, Mac and cheese, and fried zucchini. The hamburger steak was a patty that was way over cooked with gravy drizzled on top. The Mac and cheese was watery and what you would get out of a box. This place may have a long legacy in Lexington but it's running on past fumes today. By the way the wait staff were quite good so bad score is totally on the food. I actually hate giving family run businesses bad reviews as they are a vital part of the variety of eating venues. When I was a kid, we always went to Yarborough's for special occasions. At some point during my teenage years, there was a serious drop in quality and I hadn't been in years, but my grandmother loves the regular live musical entertainment, so we reserved a private room for my birthday dinner this past weekend. The experience was surprisingly very good! Everyone really liked their food (I got the small seafood platter) and we liked the classic cocktail menu list as well. A couple of big rooms up stairs plus some small rooms down stairs plus a nice patio out side. A very good steak and salad. Tender baby back ribs. Several choices of seafood fried or grilled. Wanna puke? Come to Yarborough's Restaurant! -- Ok, so about a month ago my grandmother had a retirement party at Yarborough's. There were about 20 of us and we had a private room. The staff seemed friendly enough but took FOREVER to even come in to take our drink order, just to find out we were only allowed to have water, sweet or unsweetened tea. I and several around me ordered sweet tea. The first glass was alright. Our 1st refill tasted like half tea, half Listerine. We told the waitress who acted like it was no big deal, but went back to get us "fresh" tea. Our 2nd refill tasted..strange to say the least. We arrived at 6pm, our orders were taken at 7:04pm and our food was brought to all 20 of us one..single..plate..at a time about 8:30pm. I ordered the "smothered grilled chicken".. It came with loaded mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes were ok. The green beans were literally straight out of a can, not heated, salted, nothing... Then the worst part: the chicken. The chicken was white. I mean WHITE. It looked like someone took a sharpie to make 3 grill lines on the top and it wasn't "smothered" - it was literally a single piece of unmelted American slice cheese on top. I took MAYBE 2 bites and spent the next 2 days vomiting from food poisoning. There were 4 other guests who ordered the same thing and also became ill. Out of all 20 guests, literally none of us finished a plate. Only 2 plates were half eaten. I tried a bite of my Grandmother's steak and it was tough with NO flavor. Someone ordered the ribs and they smelled ROTTEN!! She had to ask the waitress to just take it out of the room because it was making everyone nauseous. On top of everything being terrible, it's EXTREMELY over priced, even if the food was delicious. I don't know how in the world this place is still open. First let me say I am a firm believer in supporting local businesses. With that being said let me tell you how disappointing and appalling our visit to Yarborough's Restaurant was last night. My sister booked a private room 2 weeks ago for her moms 60th birthday party. It was a surprise party. We arrived at Yarborough's around 6pm. The birthday girl arrived around 6:30. SURPRISE!!! The one waitress that was serving us did not start taking our orders until 7pm. She was fabulous by the way and we tipped her well. Our food started coming out around 8:50 pm. Folks who ordered baked potatoes were substituted with mashed potatoes without being told or asked. The food was also cold. My dad had ordered a seafood platter. It was cold he sent it back and it was returned to him rubbery from being placed in the microwave. Needless to say we complained and asked for the manager. She clearly had no solutions for us other than to complain about another party that was downstairs who stayed too long. By this time our party was clearly upset so we asked for the owner who said the issue was that she took our reservation last minute and implied it was somehow our fault for not booking more than two weeks in advance. We told her we would pay for the food and drinks we ate but not for the cold plates that were left untouched. She agreed and we went downstairs to pay. When we walked downstairs to pay we heard a table of guests say they're drunk. You could clearly tell the staff had been discussing the issues our party had loud enough for these guests to hear. Granted our party of 24 had a total of 8 shots and approximately 5/6 beers. By this time it was 10 pm and we had been there for 4 hours. No one was drunk. As we were waiting to pay 3 uniformed officers and a plain clothed officer from the Lexington Police Department came in with a highway patrolman in the parking lot. After debating in my mind for a few minutes I approached the officers and asked them if they were there due to our complaints. The officer said he wasn't sure he received a call about customers refusing to pay for their food. I explained our situation and the officer thanked me and told me to have a good night. The moral of the story is if you do not have enough help DO NOT OVERBOOK YOUR ESTABLISHMENT. Although the situation with the food and lack of competent management was disappointing, the pure disrespectful nature in which management handled the situation will cause the entire party of 20+ to NEVER support this local business again. Maybe it's time to retire and get a larger chain restaurant in your place. read more

I love places like this, the ones with 75 years of history; and they are getting harder and harder to find. Some might say "old & rundown" but I say "well-worn with charm." I've only eaten lunch here, whenever I'm passing through the area; but every time I've had a great "home cooked" meal at a fair price. I've also had great service, the waitresses frequently checking in to make sure everything is alright or to fill up your drink. Me and my family have eaten here several times, mainly out of laziness to drive out of town to eat. What I have found about Yarborough's is that the quality of the food and service is drastically different on a week night then what it is on the weekend. During the week the service tends to be slow and the waitresses appear to be in their own worlds. The food lacks seasoning and freshness during the week as well. The overall atmosphere during the week gives a feeling of closing time even though you are there at 6pm. That being said, on the weekend its different ballgame. The waitresses are attentive and not at all distracted. The food is seasoned better as well as being fresher ( the food is still nothing to rave about but at least there is no wilted lettuce on the weekend in your salad). The atmosphere much more lively on the weekend, they even have live music from some local dude with guitar. Overall, Yarborough's is not the best place to eat at, not even in Lexington, but for a change of pace and if you just don't feel like driving out of Lexington to eat, its edible. I would never tell someone coming from out of town that they should try Yarborough's, that would just be silly. read more

This place is past their prime. I have been here a few times and can not recall any dish being really good. My co-workers pick this place often after we are all in the car. I had a fried chicken sandwich the last time and it was a perfectly round manufactured processed chicken with no flavor. Service and staff were very nice. I am surprised they are still in business. Yarborough is a well known restaurant in Lexington. We saw that they had an awesome variety on their lunch menu for very reasonable prices. The food was typically down home cooling. The servers we good at giving recommendations and selling us on almost everything on the lunch and dessert menu. The interior is way out of date but it is a very large space with different size private dining options. We will definitely try again for lunch. read more

I have been disappointed with my food, the last two times. But worse than that is the Management customer service. I purchased a gift certificate at Restaurant.com. The first time I tried to use it, was several months ago. I was told they were no longer accepting them. The Boss/Manager/Owner refused to come speak to me. But told our very nice waitress, to tell me. There information was supposed to have been removed months before. They were all shocked it was still on the site. I was told they would contact them Monday morning. To make sure it was removed that day. Well I contacted Restaurant.com, last week. After seeing Yarborough's was still listed. I was told they should be honoring my certificate. That they had no record of Yarborough's requesting to be removed at any time. That they were still part of the site. Well last weekend a whole group of us went back. I told the waitress about my gift certificate. She didn't even have to go ask anyone about it. She immediately told me they were not allowed to accept them. She said she had been told it was removed. I told her she could pull it up right now. She seemed surprised. Said she had been told it had been removed at the beginning of the pandemic. WOW! These people have been ripping people off for over 2 years. I asked again to speak with management. I was told there was no one there to speak to. So I asked for the owners name and number. I was given a regular restaurant card. With the name Cheryl Walser quickly written on the back. i have been forced to eat here several times because I have a couple of friends who like this place. I've never ordered anything at all that was good. The salads is shredded lettuce and' and a ring of green pepper and a sliver of onion. It's so wet, the salad dressing turns to water. The last time I ate here the hamburger "steak" was gray. There was not enough A-1 in the world to cover up that tasteless piece of what appeared to be a frozen patty. The twice baked potatoes are a joke. They are mashed potatoes with orange cheese melted over them. I got a loaded baked potato and it tasted like it was baked at lunch and reheated. You may know this place as "The Fancy Place" and although it has been called "a bit pricey" by a local cab driver, I think it was "A-OK". About to be immersed in bbq, I decided that something other than bbq'ed meat might be a good idea for dinner. Our hotel staff recommended this as the "place to go", so we went, a short cab ride and we arrived. i thought it looked promising from the outside, slate colored tiles, no windows, kind of strip club/trendy lounge, my fellow diner later recanted that she thought we arrived at a truck stop... So we entered and were instatnly seated, the decor was eclectic and a tad dated, but comfortable and clean. There are a series of small dinning rooms around the place that are kind of cool. The menu read that steaks an be cut to order, a good sign. Instantly we ordered some soft drinks and were happily served pitchers, this would alone have netted 5 stars! We ordered an appetizer, oysters Rockefeller risky I know, but come on if you have good oysters just slap some cheese and spinach and then oysters Rockefeller, no? Wee 2 escargot-esque dishes arrived with some browned cheese and green mushy vegetable stuff, under that, I assume were the oysters although no shells or identifiable oysters. It slightly tasted like oysters although no brine and or texture that I could relate to. Moving right along, did I mention the basket of crackers on the table, no, ok, there were crackers on the table. Ok, back to work, we ordered steaks, I had a rib-eye, 14 ounce and my companion had a t-bone. Both were cooked to order, nice pink center, great beefy flavor, lean cuts, actually pretty good. I was envisioning the wonderful oysters we ate in Mobile, but one bite in and I was DONE. Fran had about three before throwing in the towel. YUCK. I think they were canned!?!? Next came the entrees. As Fran would say, "it was a sight to behold". I had ribs, baked potato, and pickled beets. The ribs were boiled (a lot) and then ?Baked? With the strangest "BBQ" sauce ever. Fran had one bite and shook his head. He was over those! The beets were from a can, WITHOUT A DOUBT! So the baked potato was not awful. Fran had a fried seafood platter. Shrimp yuck. Oysters duh. I eat here on a regular basis (usually once a week, most definitely once every two weeks). The steak is ALWAYS of excellent quality. The ribs are also great. That is the extent of my knowledge of their menu. I go for steak, and they've never messed that up. They usually have live entertainment that is fairly talented and enjoyable. My ONLY complaint is every once in awhile the service is piss poor. But it hasn't been enough of a problem for me to consider not coming here when I want an excellent steak read more

My first time at this place. Easy to find and get to - right off the interstate. We had a very large group, I think there were several other large groups as well. It is an old building, but it was clean and in good repair for its age. Well set up for groups of people - lots of small rooms. Service was reasonable given the size of our party. I ordered the ribeye steak, baked potato and salad -- $12.99 Salad was shredded iceberg lettuce, with a slice of tomato and a few croutons. Not the type of salad I was expecting and not in a good way. Steak was a good steak, maybe a little overdone, but tender, flavorful and juicy. Comparable to other some less expensive chain restaurants. Baked potato, I would not recommend, it was way over cooked. Others had the twice baked and creamy potatoes, they mentioned they were good. The person next to me also thought their steak was overdone - That person also had the ribeye. Others at the table ordered ribs and T-bone steaks, which seemed to go over well. Many seemed to like the deep fried string beans. To the owner, I would recommend improve the salads with some leaf lettuce, homemade croutons (easy and cheap), other fresh vegetables and make some of the salad dressings (cheap and great opportunity to add some zing). On the baked potato, you can cut them open to add toppings that the guest requests - this would allow you to check for overdone. Got here early for my first experience eating at Yarborough's. We came for my brothers birthday so we ordered 4 apps; Oysters Rockefeller, cheese fries, oyster cocktail fried, and jalapeño poppers. Apps were really good. Oysters Rockefeller was excellent. Meals were petite filet, beef kabob, and fried seafood platters. Food was cooked like we asked and the service was great. Food wasn't good. Service was good but that was about it. The steaks were over cooked and had literally NO flavor or seasonings. I had to drench mine in steak sauce to be able to eat it and I rarely even use steak sauce. Definitely not worth the $65 bill. We won't be going back. We could have gotten a great meal for $65 somewhere else. read more

I have been here before but tonight really was a disappointing meal. The steak was absolutely bland without even salt or pepper. The twice baked potatoes were cold and the service was less than attentive. Wont be back here, sad to since its the only place close for steak. read more

Yarboroughs Restaurant has been in Lexington since 1940. It is a unique place and is not a chain or anything close to what out -of-towners could understand. They have wonderful food and the best onion rings I have ever had. The unique atmosphere is homey and they offer private rooms of differing sizes without an extra charge. Many good memories and celebrations have occurred here with my family and many others. Their steaks are awesome and the desserts are homemade. Just because the restaurant doesn't have the latest decorating trend, don't count them out. Cheryl and Bill Walser are wonderful hosts and if you take the restaurant for what it is you will not be disappointed. There is a great deal of history here which I can understand visitors off the highway are unable to absorb. read more

We went there last night for our 10th anniversary the service was great, food fantastic we have been searching for a place in lexington that serves GOOD food and fianally we found it, everyone was friendly and the live music was real nice. So glad i decided not to pay attention to the one bad review someone wrote on another site, gotta find it so I can give the restaurant the review i believe it deserves, great! read more
