Country fried steak, pinto beans, Mac and cheese, and cornbread
    Marcus W.

I was heading a little bit south of Winston-Salem tonight to go see a play and wanted to find a local restaurant. I'm a big fan of the" meat and two" or "meat and three" style restaurants and had not really found a great one in the area yet. I looked on Google maps and found this restaurant not far from the school where I was going to the place so I decided to check it out. As soon as I got there the people were really friendly, and quickly led me to a table and got my drink order. Order. The meats and vegetables were classically less than on a whiteboard on the wall. I decided to have the country fried steak and gravy, pinto beans, and mac and cheese. The food was really good, the steak was just a little tough but not bad at all. .

Randy's is a home town, country kinda place and has the kind of food you'd expect to find there. Tonight, we ordered take out. I got a fish sandwich (baby flounder) and onion rings. Both are decent. The fish could be a little more crispy but that might be because the whole sandwich steamed in foil on the ride home. The philly cheese steak was really good and gooey just the way it should be. The corn dog was average as was the burger. The fries were average. Overall, I have been to Randy's many times and will continue to go back. The breakfasts are good too!

Was so good I decided to go the next day and wanted to update on something that was tried the previous day. The mac and cheese the following day was much better. It had lots of flavor and still creamy.

Small restaurant but good prices and nice staff. Plus they have Tetris tater tots.... I feel like a kid again. Plus I'm playing with my food.

Very cozy space. Nice fried green tomatoes, and the Arnold Palmers are top. Staff were very attentive.

Tip: drizzle some ranch on pizza. Oh my! Ambiance is comfortable. Staff friendly. Finally, shout out to Kayla (hope spelling is correct), one of the staff. Without having to ask, Kayla brought our salad in split plates, made sure our drinks were refilled, etc. She checked on us regularly to make sure all was ok. Friendly, kind, positive attitude. I came on a Thursday because 1 of the daily specials on that day is Fried Chicken - 4 pieces with 2 sides costing $13.49. The pieces were a wing, drumstick, thigh, and a large breast. My side choices were mashed potatoes with gravy and pinto beans. This was a solid diner meal, and was a value meal as well. This would have have been rated even high except for 2 things - the chicken and both sides were under seasoned, and I had to chase down my waitress twice - once to get a to go box, and once to get my check. In addition, I was never offered a refill on my tea. Don't know if I'll return - it's a bit of a drive from the Clemmons area, and there are a number of very good diners in this area - Clemmons Kitchens, Pete's, Southern Spice, Duke's, and Westtown! There are tons of appetizers to choose from, which is great if you just want a drink and something small to eat. Regarding the entrees. Burgers, wings, wraps, and sandwiches dominate the menu. I sampled my wife's Hamburger Steak plate and enjoyed it. Tons of beers (many regional) on the draft menu. 5 stars for their draft beer selection. The exterior is pretty unassuming, so I wasn't expecting to walk into such an awesome spot! From the super-friendly welcome from our smiling hostess, who seated us immediately, to our waitress, Carrie, who was incredibly nice and provided excellent service, everything was top-notch! I'm always on the hunt for the best club sandwich, and I can honestly say this was THE BEST club sandwich I've EVER had! It was so beautifully presented, it almost looked fake, but it was absolutely delicious. We also tried the Pick 3 appetizers and loved the fried mushrooms, southwest egg rolls, and bagel bites, and we had a burger too! We're so happy we found this place and can't wait to come back. 10/10!

You have to understand, that I am a total burger snob. As a reference point, my favorite burger in the Piedmont Triad is Hops Burger Bar in Greensboro, and I'll drive the 20 miles and stand around waiting on a table for 30 minutes, at the first suggestion, no questions asked. Also way up there is/was Big Burger Spot, but they've now slipped into third place since Guy is no longer the owner and overseer and now that I've had the burgers at Thunder Road. First off, they will cook your burger to your desired doneness. For me, that's the minimum standard that a burger joint has to meet, and my medium-rare burgers have been spot-on every time. From there, the buns, the topping, the sides have always been fresh, tasty and again, done to order to meet my picky requests! "Can I get those tots crispy?" "Since I haven't tried it, can you put that sauce on the side?" "Can you cook that bacon crispy but not burnt?" Each request was met with something like a "You bet!" and the execution of the request was perfect. I really like that each table is equipped with a roll of paper towels and several condiments including the local Texas Pete, as well as salt, pepper, and some form of seasoning salt. Often when I see these things on tables in diners they are grimy and the table beneath then is sticky and dirty, but they make an extra effort to keep them clean and well stocked. For example, last week I grabbed the red bottle of Heinz ketchup, expecting that I would need to request a swap with a full bottle, but no, it was totally full! Just like when I was a kid, I love crunchy potato chips on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like fries with my ketchup! Let's face the facts that one of these days I'm bound to be disappointed in something, but from what I can see from the friendly and attentive staff, it's going to something I can overlook or that they'll be willing to address. Oh, that reminds me about the bathrooms! I often dread entering the men's room in a one-off diner or pub, but I was elated to find a clean and fresh smelling space that was well lit and well supplied. They've won us over. Last Saturday we bought three of our granddaughters, and today will be joined by my sister and brother-in-law, who are also locals and bound to become fans of Thunder Road Grill! As I re-read this before posting it, I wonder, why do I leave good reviews for places that I don't want to see become crowded and popular? Sometimes I question my sanity! Be sure to say howdy to me if we run into each other. And Fred B, I think you need to give them one more try.

I took one of the wooden booths that line the walls and say beneath the car, truck and racing paraphernalia that adorns the walls throughout. The service was fantastic given that I was the only one to care for. I ordered the BLT plate with tater tots and a hot dog. The BLT was served on a toasted bun. The bacon was thick and had just a slight chew to it. Just the right amount of mayo and tomatoes cut to a good thickness. Hot dog was pretty great. They put a real generous amount of mustard *under* the frank then topped with chili and a nice creamy slaw. If the bun had been toasted it would have been darn near perfect. Appreciated the self-serve seasoning salt at each table. Tots were good without but especially good with. Thunder Road Grill was worth the drive and I hope to return!
