Five stars because Dodo and Alex gave us the best experience for my birthday! Alex was amazing and accommodated all my requests! Dodo was working hard making sure everything was all filled up for us. The major downside is that the AC has been broken for two weeks. Luckily we got a spot by an open door but Alex was clearly very hot. There wasn't a very strong breeze so me and my party were definitely hot and sweating when our meal was being prepared. Management really needs to fix his and treat their staff a little better. They all do a great job but a little AC could make the experience that much better. I know to generally avoid 3-star restaurants on Yelp, but my mom wanted to eat sushi here for the ocean view on our date so we decided to give it a try. I try to give high reviews, but this place needs improvement. I'm not sure if their A/C was broken, but for expected hot weather in July it was very stuffy inside. We were advised to sit in front of their one rotating fan on the sushi side, but the lighting there was so dim and we noticed a few of the ceiling lights weren't turned on or were broken. We ended up asking to sit outside where there was more ventilation. I will say the servers are very friendly which I appreciate. The menus were peeling off the middle seams and the patio was not well maintained. I know it is hard to mess up a classic Rainbow Roll and it was the only sushi roll that was non-tempura or baked, so we ordered that, their Albacore Crispy Onion and Yellowtail Carpaccio. Sadly the only thing that tasted fresh on the Rainbow Roll was the avocado. The tuna and the albacore tasted fishy but we came hungry so that got the better of us. The Yellowtail Carpaccio was a lot easier to eat. Overall, I realize this restaurant is more catered towards teppanyaki, but if they decided to make a whole separate menu for sushi, the quality needs to be good enough for people to want to order it again. read more

Food was very typical for this type of restaurant. It was good and the cook did a great job with the seasoning. Parking is a drag. Had to park near the outlets and walk about 8 minutes. The reason im giving this place 2 stars is because our cook and another patron decided to speak spanish and converse only with eachother throughout the entire meal. I was really disappointed with my experience at Tokyo Wako. The food was mid at best. My steak was overcooked and had way too much fat on it. The worst part was my iced tea had bugs in it. I brought it to the waitress's attention, and instead of apologizing and removing the drinks from the bill, they simply brought me another drink. At that point, it honestly felt like they just brought me more "bug juice." On top of that, our waitress was inattentive and came across as rude. For a restaurant where you expect good food, service, and an enjoyable experience, this definitely missed the mark. I understand things happen, but how a restaurant handles a problem, especially something as serious as bugs in a drink, makes all the difference. We had such a great meal at Tokyo Wako Long Beach! From the moment we walked in, the customer service was fast, attentive, and so understanding with our kids -- which made the whole experience stress‑free and enjoyable. We ordered the Caterpillar roll, the California roll, and the Teriyaki Chicken bento box, and everything was sooo fresh and yummy! The sushi tasted crisp and flavorful, and the teriyaki chicken was juicy with great savory sauce -- total crowd‑pleasers. (Most sushi rolls here are roughly $13-$17, and entrees/bento boxes are usually around $20-$25+ depending on what you get). Parking was easy -- there's a garage and on‑site valet in downtown Long Beach (street parking can be a bit more limited), so we didn't stress about finding a spot before dinner. Coming highly recommended by local area friends we dined a couple times to experience both dine-in areas. We found the high marks came from the Teppan dine-in area with its theatrical chef. The food tastes better there, probably because of the dynamic vibe set by the chef. For the most part we ordered the Panko chicken, garlic edamame and fried rice for comparison on both visits. Obviously for the Teppan Dine in we also ordered the shrimp and scallops from the Teppenyaki menu. The dine-in only was to the left of the host station. It's not as bright as the other side and the servers are a lot more melancholy. It was as if they got the short end of the stick to serve in the "uncool" part of the restaurant. As such the chicken seemed overcook and not as tasty. The miso soup, that came with entree, wasn't as hot. Even the edamame wasn't as exceptional. Obviously the Teppan dine area delivered. I'm surprised to see some low rating for this place. We had a large party - maybe a dozen of us? We had a nice private room. The initial service to get or drink order was a bit slow, but things flowed nicely after that. Our chef was very talented and hilarious. We came to this restaurant for lunch on a Sunday right when they opened, around noon. We were the third table seated for Teppanyaki and were really looking forward to it since it was a small family gathering and a bit of a special occasion. A few of us hadn't been to a Teppanyaki dinner in a long time, and one family member had never experienced it before, so we were excited to share that with them and enjoy the classic tableside cooking show. Unfortunately, the experience was pretty disappointing. The chef who cooked for us seemed uninterested and barely engaged with the table. There was almost no entertainment or showmanship -- he said "volcano" once, did a very minimal onion volcano, and that was basically the extent of the performance. It felt rushed and lacking in energy. I started to get the sense it might be that kind of experience because none of the other tables around us seemed to be having much of a show either. On top of that, the overall service and attention to detail were lacking. After finishing our soups and salads, our empty plates sat in front of us for nearly 20 minutes before anyone came to clear them, which made things feel a bit neglected. The food itself was fine but didn't make up for the dull atmosphere and lack of interaction. For a place that's supposed to be lively and fun, the whole meal just felt flat. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a real Teppanyaki experience -- it just didn't have the energy, entertainment, or service that make this type of dining special. read more

The resteraunt itself looks nice, beautiful Japanese architecture that entices and draws you in and this is where the trouble begins. The staff here are rude and dismissive, service was rare and poor - with one waitress attempting to turn off the overhead lights at our table while we were eating. My teppanyaki chef was a child in chefs clothing who served my steak BLUE when I asked for medium rare and then threw a fit and became unresponsive when I asked him to cook it for longer. To put it in perspective: I had asked him if it was medium rare instead of blue, which he said it was, I asked him to cook it some more then to make it pink throughout, instead of a raw burgandy red. This madchild then takes only four pieces of my sliced steak to re-cook instead of the entire thing and claims that this is my fault since I didn't ask for my steak to be "medium well". Maybe you're thinking I'm being overly harsh but NO, I bit my tongue and politely asked what he considered "pink throughout" to be, hence the "medium well" quip he gave me. The issue with re-cooking the steak also didn't happen to a woman at my table, although her medium rare steak was blue as well, with the chef taking the entire piece instead of having to be asked to cook the rest. And service was like this the whole time, here: do you want shrimp? No. Fuck you I wasn't asking, here's your shrimp. I'm paraphrasing of course, onto the food quality: It's mediocre. I've had better steak from supermarkets, better fried tofu from tea-bars, and better vegetables from my home garden. It was shit like this the entire night, an attitude of contempt, constantly having to fight the staff on things both big and small and it's NOT cheap to come here. The restaurant itself has such potential being a waterfront location, large indoor/outdoor seating, & architecture. The service however plays a major role in ambiance. My husband and i stood at the entrance for a solid 5 minutes, not due to being busy, but simply there was no host present to notice. Those employees that did, made no effort to call attention to a host or let us know someone would be coming to assist. When we were sat, our server was kind. However, it seemed dining culture etiquette was not anticipated. We repeated our order a few times. Were brought food by a different server and had to ask for plates, ramekins for soy & the soy sauce itself. We also had to ask the other server for our drinks that didn't come in the beginning. Our original server came a few minutes after and we got double drinks and plates on the table. The food was a solid 4/10. It is always disappointing to spend on below average flavor with above average pricing. We asked someone for the bill, were handed a receipt with no bill tray. Our original server came back around asking if we wanted to order more, quickly noticed we already were handing the bill & payment to her. Above all there seems to be no structure or protocol to expected service to guests. I'm not really a fan of Teppanyaki but we came here for drinks and food because it's fun especially if you have kids. Kids love these places. Our Teppanyaki chef was super awesome and funny and kept us entertained while he put on a little show and cooked our food. The place is really spacious and can definitely accommodate large parties. The sashimi (assorted sashimi A) wasn't bad, quite basic but that's better than having bad sashimi. The cooked food was decent but the kids loved it . Can't say anything bad about this place. The experience of Teppanyaki grill was awesome and staff as great. They do serve cocktails and assorted beers. My family of 4 were so excited as my daughters have never had this experience. I knew it was going to end terribly when our server wasn't writing our order down and trying to go off of memory. I had to request our drinks 4 times, my kids drinks didn't actually arrive until mid dinner The food was delicious. But the terrible service more than cancelled that out. My daughters ordered sushi, they brought the wrong dishes out, my girls tried it not knowing it wasn't correct, then they blamed us because "we ate it" which we did not. The server came out AFTER we had all finished our meals to serve us the sauces that were supposed to go with our meals. The check had to be adjusted 5 times as they had other tables items on our bill. The cherry on top was watching the table next to me get served an ice cream with a candle while the staff sang happy birthday. Not sure why their mistakes had to determine my birthday. The manager was non apologetic. I had to flag her down in the kitchen after our entire table requested her and she wouldn't come out. We will never be back. This place was cool. My wife and I ate here yesterday for dinner and it vibes descent. The outside looks better than the inside and the inside smelled old to me. Nevertheless less, our service was good and the hibachi was better than Benihana's. I love how they aren't afraid to use the garlic butter and the steak was prepared better than Benihana's. My family has been here a few times and food is always good. Only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because of my recent experience. I called on Sunday 01/18/2026 to check if the restaurant would be open on the holiday, 01/19/2026. The employee who answered the phone said "I think we're open...hold on. Yes we're open tomorrow". I said "Ok. Is it the same hours for Monday?" She said "Yes, same hours". I said thanks and hung up the phone. On 01/19/2026, my family and I drive from Anaheim and get to the restaurant at 2:50 PM. The doors are closed and there's a sign on the door with no list of hours. We see one individual cleaning inside so we think "oh, maybe they open at 3 PM and the individual on the phone got it wrong. So we wait. Come back at 3:00 PM, still closed. Check online, says the restaurant is open of course but holiday may affect hours. Naturally the reason why we called AHEAD OF TIME to check if they were open as the internet is not always reliable. The trip was a waste of gas and time. The whole reason we came down was to eat here. My son had been looking forward to it all weekend. Apparently the employees don't know when they're open or not either.
