Kimchi Ramen
Lu T.

A decent place to get Korean and Japanese style food. It was a cold night and we stopped by to get some Japanese Ramen. There were a bunch of choices, but we ordered the kimchi Ramen and the King Ramen. All were pretty good, but I had better since I live in an area that has tons of Ramen places. If you are looking for good Ramen for the Eugene area, I do recommend this place. Service is excellence and the chefs care on presentation. Ramen came out really hot, which is very important.

Looks like a quaint family run ramen shop in downtown Eugene. Pretty large menu board with good variety of ramen choices (plus other Japanese items but no black garlic ramen). Tall ceilings, modern decor, sort of an open kitchen & friendly attentive service. Value-wise, a pretty good deal for ramen when compared to other noodle places. Ramen bowls ranged from $11 to $15 for a large amount of food. We ordered the King ramen (a bowl that included chicken karaage & cha shu pork) in a miso broth. Flavors were OK but the chicken & pork were meh and a bit too much bean sprouts. We also had the pork katsu ramen in shio broth. The pork cutlet was crispy and large, though again, a little too many bean sprouts. For the money, definitely worth a revisit when in downtown Eugene.

King Ramen + Spicy Katsu Ramen + Gyoza

Looking for ramen in Eugene, OR? I'll shoyu the way... ...to Tokyo Tonkatsu! I was recommended this spot by a friend and finally checked it out last weekend. It's a small mom and pop ramen shop, and they had a handful of ramen and other dishes to choose from. I was pleasantly surprised to find a few Korean dishes on the menu -- tteokbokki, bulgogi, and jajangmeon. I tried their "King Ramen" with shoyu broth. I was impressed by the massive bowl of delicious broth, fresh noodles, and variety of toppings. I highly recommend if you want a little bit of everything because the King was just that! The prices were on par for a bowl of ramen ($14-16), and honestly you get your bang for your buck -- these bowls are loaded. The restaurant is relatively small in and of itself so keep that mind if you have a larger group. You order at the register first, then it's first-come first-serve seating. The service was attentive and kind, despite arriving sorta close to closing time. FYI the restaurant is located in downtown Eugene so it's mostly street parking. I'll defs be returning and I hope to see ya there!

Spicy pork with soft boiled egg

This spot is a good place if you're in need of some traditional ramen. I've been here a few times and the food has always been consistent. You get the option to choose your broth and spicy levels making the ramen pretty customizable. There is other stuff on the menu but I would stick to the ramen, we tried the rice cakes one time and they were fine but not as good as the soup and noodle dishes. The staff is always really nice and the owners always come out to check in on your dinning experience. The restaurant offers a decent amount of seating and is pretty clean.

It's such an interesting setup! Order at the counter, grab a seat, and they bring you amazing ramen. Is it sit-down or fast food? The open kitchen is LOUD during meat-chopping time, but plenty of seating! My King Ramen and hubby's Spicy Katsu Ramen were both delicious --full of flavor and meat! Wish they had garlic ramen though. Perfectly soft-boiled eggs (just slightly overcooked). #Ramen #Restaurant #Food #Dinner #KingRamen #SpicyKatsuRamen #Foodie #OpenKitchen #Egg

Taro Bubble Tea

The parking is a royal pain, but the taro bubble tea is very good, and I loved the tonkotsu ramen - the mix of pork, ginger, bamboo shoots, egg, ramen noodles, and lemongrass makes for a good tasting ramen. Service is very good, but not a lot of ambiance, and it's a bit small, so it can get crowded quickly. But it's a great place that has a mix of ramen, bubble tea, bulgogi (I saw someone order bulgogi), gyoza (again, I saw someone order it), katsu, karaage....it's a great mix.

Overall rating: 3.75 stars Food: 3.5 stars Service & Ambiance: 4.0 Cleanliness: 4.0 I was feeling in a Japanese comfort food mood for dinner and this was walking distance from where I was staying, plus the reviews were very positive, so I decided to check it out. Casual dining, no table service, other than your food brought to your table. Huge signage on the wall near the cashier or you can look at the menus on the counter. Place your order, pay, get a number and take a seat. I ordered the katsu-don (tonkatsu donburi)...I was really looking forward to a hot bowl of rice, breaded cutlet with scrambled eggs & onions cooked easy over the top, comfort food. My rice bowl was served quickly, but I was shocked to see how it was served---basically high and dry over 'slightly wet' rice, barely any egg and onion. Seems like some broth was a the bottom of the rice bowl. Usually the scrambled onions & eggs are served over the bowl of rice and then the cutlet placed on top. You should be able to taste the sweetness of the mirin & soy sauce, but not in this case. I guess it was my mistake to order a rice bowl, as most everyone is raving about their ramen on Yelp! and most of the patrons I saw, ordered ramen. I'll definitely give them another try, but I'll stick with ordering ramen.

So, prices are tempting here. But I'd stay away from their char siu pork, as it tasted more like deli meat, and you got one thin slice in the entire soup... HOWEVER, the pork katsu in the miso ramen broth was on point. The potstickers were okay, I wish it came with more than 4 in one order. It was a bit slow even though there were a lot of folks in the kitchen, but thankfully we weren't in a huge rush. Overall, it's alright ramen, and we'll probably be back when we need to scratch that itch.

We've been sleeping on this ramen spot for too long! We tried the tonkotsu and spicy katsu ramen this time and they were great. The chicken in particular was fried perfectly - a great crisp on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside. We can't wait to go back and try more on the menu!

I love the chicken Katsu. Tastes like Koreatown, Honolulu. And the soups are fantastic as well!

Ordered the Ikura onigiri and the Japanese Sweet Potato and the Agadashi Tofu. (I asked for miso butter on the side for me because I have found it overwhelms the potato which is seasoned really wonderfully). The Ikura Onirigi was simple and excellent. My favorite wishes that they would create an regular Onirigi Happy Hour where they are on discount so that those of us who just want to have half a dozen of those and a few drinks can come in and experience our heart's delight. My drink of choice here is the Painkiller -- which is really well balanced and so delicious it's hard not to have a second. Wednesdays are when they have two dollars off the ginger-based drinks and I didn't try it this time but I am keen to the next time because they appear to crush the ginger in house and make their own ginger concoction magic. The bar was thankfully not crowded. As an introvert it was nice to be finishing up and heading out just as more people were coming in.

The place was packed, but thankfully we were seated quite quickly with a 5-10 minute wait. The interior is cozy and welcoming. It's dimly lit with mood lighting on the tables. It felt lively since the tables were packed. We started by ordering the sake and shoyu flights and some fries with wasabi mayo while we explored the rest of their menu. We received the flights quickly. Both flights had 3 flavors and were tasty and fun to try. Each flight comes with a menu describing the flavor profile and how the drinks were made. The flavors of each flight were distinct and matched their descriptions. The fries with wasabi mayo were pretty basic fries. They were well seasoned, had a nice crunch, and the mayo had a subtle wasabi flavor without it being spicy. For our next round we ordered the salmon misoyaki, butternut squash, tofu kushiyaki, and steak kushiyaki. Unfortunately, our server forgot to bring our butternut squash, but we ended up being full with the rest of the food we ordered and just took it off our order. The salmon misoyaki was delicious - perfectly cooked, tender, and well seasoned. The mustard greens on the side added a nice sourness. The tofu kushiyaki was tender and flavorful. The steak kushiyaki was well-seasoned, but more well done than I preferred and a little tough. Next, we ordered the spinach goma ae and umeboshi unigiri. The spinach goma ae was such a pleasant surprise! It's a chilled spinach dish with a tamari/black sesame sauce that was refreshing mid-meal. Really good umami flavor! The umeboshi onigiri had the expected sharp salty/sour flavor that balanced well with the ratio of rice. Ended up dipping the umeboshi onigiri in the goma ae sauce to get every last drop. For dessert we ordered the basque cheesecake and créme brûlée. The cheesecake was just okay. The menu said there was sake and black sesame flavors, but apart from some black sesame dust on the plate we couldn't taste the sake/sesame. The texture was thick and not super smooth. It was a pretty heavy dessert and not very sweet. The créme brûlée was yummy. The custard was smooth and the crunchy caramelized sugar on top was a nice contrast in texture and flavor. The service itself was slow. We were waiting around 15 minutes between orders. Given, it was a busy night. However, we felt a bit forgotten as our server did forget to bring one of our dishes, we had to ask for our dessert menus twice, and we were accidentally served two basque cheesecakes instead of our order of cheesecake and créme brûlée. The staff were friendly, and quickly brought out the correct desserts at the end. I'd recommend ordering more dishes at once so you can enjoy more food in between orders. Would definitely come back again to try the rest of their menu. We wanted to try the Japanese sweet potato but they had sold out that night. The oysters, sashimi, and udon also looked quite good!

I have seen a lot of reviews of Fuji that are not that flattering... but the reviews are often for sushi, which is not really what most hibachi restaurants excel at. If I want sushi, I will go to a sushi specialty restaurant. Normally the kitchen menus are good (Katsu, Tempura, etc)... but the Hibachi based TeppanYaki is usually the best. So today at Fuji, I ordered the Filet Mignon Hibachi lunch special. Great price... so I figured why not? Service was very good... I was told that the minimum seating at a hibachi table was two. So I could either wait and see if someone else came in wanting that... or I could order two servings. Lol... hungry but not that hungry. I was also told that hibachi for one is available at the normal table (minus the chefs flinging knives and shrimp around)! I was seated, brought water... and my waitress was great. Cheerful and helpful without being obtrusive. She gave me an option of either French Onion soup or Miso soup... I went with the Miso. She brought a bowl out shortly and apologized it took so long (it didn't), stating that since I was the first one in, and they just opened... nothing was ready yet. So everything was made fresh. Miso was good... small cubes of tofu, some nori... and you could taste the hondashi it was made with... delicious. A bit salty, but that does happen... She brought my plate out and it was very nice to look at, with a great aroma. Nice portion of filet, veggies and fried rice (I chose the rice, instead of noodles). Very tasty, beef was so tender and cooked perfectly medium rare like I asked for. Veggies were crisp and delicious... and the fried rice (yakimeshi) was wonderful! Highly recommended... and I will need to go back and try dinner at the hibachi tables, and also order from the kitchen menu. I feel bad, because I started eating, and forgot to take a picture... but here is the plate with 4 or 5 pieces of filet missing! ;)

Overall, I would say that almost everything was really fantastic and we will definitely be back. We ordered three things to share. We got the shoyu ramen (added wakame), the mixed tempura, and the karaage chicken plate. The ramen came out first. The noodles were good, the egg is always a favorite, and we like the bamboo shoots. The broth was way too salty, though, which was the only thing that wasn't up to our standard for the evening and a bit disappointing since we were looking forward to the ramen. The tempura was really fun. We got the mixed plate and liked the variety of veggies that came with it. It also had two rather large shrimp so we were able to cut them and share. It came with two sauces: the traditional tentsuyu sauce and a spicy Mayo. Both were good. While waiting for the karaage, they came out to tell us that they accidentally started making a chicken katsu and gave it to us on the house while we waited for the dish we ordered. What a treat to be able to try another dish and it was delicious as well. It came with the traditional ketchup-based katsu sauce and teriyaki sauce. The chicken was very tender! We got the karaage plate last. It came with rice dusted with furikake, half a ajiamago egg, and a side of mac salad. The mac salad was pretty good overall. They added finely chopped green peppers to it, which aren't always my favorite, but it was still good. The karaage was also tender and came with teriyaki and spicy mayo. The interesting thing about this location is that they share the space with a bar. So there are two sets of staff and two tabs to pay at the end. Everyone was very attentive and helpful so it all worked out smoothly. We were able to get a beer from the bartender that came over to our table and took our order after we ordered our food. Seems like a setup that can work for them and hopefully they can help each other's businesses thrive.
