Former ramenya chef here: Ojisan may be the best ramen in Eugene. If you like firm noodles like me, they get it right. However, the ramen is TOO expensive! A bowl of ramen should NEVER be more than $10. Yes, I get it it's in Downtown and Eugene is hostile towards all businesses big & small so costs are high and violent drug addicts prowl the streets but still. Lower the price of a BOWL OF SHOYO from near $20. This Post Covid inflation needs to end. 4/5 for best Ramen in Eugene. 0/5 for the outrageous price point. read more

Finally got over to their new brick-and-mortar location. We had a really nice meal and got to try a few new things. Overall, I would say that almost everything was really fantastic and we will definitely be back. We ordered three things to share. We got the shoyu ramen (added wakame), the mixed tempura, and the karaage chicken plate. The ramen came out first. The noodles were good, the egg is always a favorite, and we like the bamboo shoots. The broth was way too salty, though, which was the only thing that wasn't up to our standard for the evening and a bit disappointing since we were looking forward to the ramen. The tempura was really fun. We got the mixed plate and liked the variety of veggies that came with it. It also had two rather large shrimp so we were able to cut them and share. It came with two sauces: the traditional tentsuyu sauce and a spicy Mayo. Both were good. While waiting for the karaage, they came out to tell us that they accidentally started making a chicken katsu and gave it to us on the house while we waited for the dish we ordered. What a treat to be able to try another dish and it was delicious as well. It came with the traditional ketchup-based katsu sauce and teriyaki sauce. The chicken was very tender! We got the karaage plate last. It came with rice dusted with furikake, half a ajiamago egg, and a side of mac salad. The mac salad was pretty good overall. They added finely chopped green peppers to it, which aren't always my favorite, but it was still good. The karaage was also tender and came with teriyaki and spicy mayo. The interesting thing about this location is that they share the space with a bar. So there are two sets of staff and two tabs to pay at the end. Everyone was very attentive and helpful so it all worked out smoothly. We were able to get a beer from the bartender that came over to our table and took our order after we ordered our food. Tempura was too thick & uncooked despite the crunchy outside. Miso Soup - Did you add too much miso or did you drop the salt container in the soup? Sodium Overload!! Rice - not enough water, rice was def hard. Also, what was on the rice? It was not furikake. Ramen - why is there carrots? Noodles from a package? Lacked so much taste! Possibly hot water with a dash of "pseudo flavoring"!! SUCH A HORRIBLE RAMEN EXPERIENCE! Tonkatsu - because the tempura was messed up. TLDR: Don't get your hopes up. I should probably give 1-star but the chef and staff really tried. They just need to try harder. The staff and service were fine, the ambiance was good, but the food needs a lot of work. We came in on a Saturday evening (about 7pm) with a party of 8. The restaurant had maybe 3 other small parties that were finishing up. The place was not busy. From looking at the menu, we assumed all the dishes were Japanese inspired and didn't think anything of it. We ordered 5 ramen bowls, 3 rice plates, and 5 appetizer/starters (shishito peppers, edamame, agedashi tofu, miso soup, and assorted tempura). The starter portions were big. With a party of 8, we could barely finish the starters. The shishito peppers and garlic edamame were all excellent. They had good flavors. The tofu was okay. We still ate it all. The tempura really could use more work. The veggies were large cuts and the breading was thick. The shrimp used was large, cocktail shrimp size, so the breading was thick. I don't think they followed the traditional Japanese method for making/frying tempura. One of the veggies were carrots and it tasted as if they just cut it, battered it, then fried it. It was hard to bite into. We ended up peeling off the breading on some veggies just to eat it. And instead of the miso soup being an individual serving, it was served in a large pho-sized bowl, and no serving ladle or individual bowls were offered to divvy it up. The flavor of the miso soup was very salty. We didn't finish it or even attempt to try. The main dishes started to come out. All 5 ramens had a substitute that we were not informed about ahead of time. The restaurant ran out of the pork belly slices that typically is in the ramen, and without letting us know, the chef subbed "chicken karaage". Unfortunately, even the chicken was not great. Apparently, the chicken tasted like it had a sweet glaze on it and the batter was thick. So, it likely was not chicken karaage but maybe sesame chicken instead. Some ate the chicken and some took it out of the ramen. And, as a filler in the ramen, there were shaved slices of carrots. Each of the ramen soup bases (shio, shoyu, miso, and tan tan) all tasted watered down. And the soft boiled egg was nearly hard boiled. Perhaps they were boiled the previous day. There was not much flavor in the soup at all. At this point, our guests just ate the noodles and some of the veggies. Typically, they would have all finished their bowl of ramen. As a peace offering for the subbed out pork, the chef offered to give a few of their last pieces of char siu served as "onigiri", we gladly accepted. When it came out, the char siu was served as nigiri. Either the host or chef had no idea what they were talking about. The char siu was served over small blocks of regular white rice formed into nigiri chunks, and topped with green onion slices and sweet glaze on top. It tasted fine but a few of the pieces were pure fat pieces. We ate a good portion of the plate leaving the non-edible pieces. The rice dishes were served with a half plate serving of white rice with furikake sprinkled on it, a scoop of mac salad, sliced green onions, and the chosen protein. Two plates were pork katsu and the last was assorted tempura. We know how the tempura turned out. See above comment. Our guest ate maybe 3 pieces of tempura, a couple bites of the mac salad and some rice. The pork katsu was more like a pork chop cut that was not tenderized and the battered, panko'd, and fried. The pork was not too bad but it was too thick to be called katsu. The mac salad was disappointing. Apparently, this restaurant was trying to go for "Hawaiian-Japanese" inspired food but they couldn't even hit the mark with mac salad. The pasta was still very firm. Not even al dente. The taste was bland. Perhaps it was a "prior day" batch. And what do you do with sliced green onions. We all weren't sure what to do with it. So we just left it on the plate. Lastly, my sister and I ordered cocktails. She got a coconut crème drink with tequila and I got a drink with vodka, some sour components, and grape soda. Let's just say that neither of us cared for finishing our drinks. So sad!! When asked if we needed takeout boxes, we politely said "No Thank you!" Most of our plates/bowls were still pretty full of untouched food. And our group (consisting of 3-18+ yo hungry teens and 1-pre teen who eats like a full grown teen) is not known to leave food on our plates or left behind. *Notes re: our party - My sister's family of 4 is from the Bay Area in Northern CA. On the bright side, there were a lot of fresh ingredients in here and the egg was cooked well. The broth was so salty that I poured quite a lot of water in it. It didn't have any flavor besides miso saltiness (we can't equate salt with flavor, as anyone who has seen the movie Tampopo can attest). The noodles were decent but a bit gummy. The gyoza were pretty tasty. The texture of the filling was mushy but it tasted all right, and I liked the texture of the dumpling exterior. The Katsu is insanely crispy, not at all a hint of greasiness, super fresh with the option to have brown or white rice, an egg, green onions to make it a bowl or just by itself. They also have karage chicken and agadasji tofu so if Ramen isn't your jam you have lots of options They have four types of Ramen, miso, shoyu, spicy and a vegetable vegetarian. Great space, but several problems. Got diarrhea from an egg that was cooked days ago and fridged, waiting for my order.... Music was offensively loud country rock, and when I asked politely if they could lower the volume, the bartender dude had shitty attitude and barely lowered it. This place would be much better under different management. The tables were also frighteningly unstable so that when we stood up the table and all our food nearly dumped on the floor. I pointed all this out to a waiter who then told the owner, who then stood near the register staring at us until we finished. Got a bad feeling about this place. Came home and had a bad stomach. We stopped by 255 Madison for Comedy Open Mic yesterday (super fun, highly recommend!) and decided to give Ojisan's Ramen a try since we hadn't eaten dinner yet. It is currently located outside the wine bar and has a small covered seating area. We got two of their Chicken Katsu bowls and an order of Andagi. The food was alright--bowls consisted of basically just white rice, a small chicken cutlet, a scoop of macaroni salad and a lot of scallions. Unfortunately, it was a bit plain even with the sauce that came on the side and the bowl was an overwhelming majority of rice. The andagi was left unfinished because it was still raw on the inside and extremely overdone on the outside. Service made up for everything though! The girl behind the window was sweet and brought out everything to our table inside 255 Madison. I would be curious to try their ramen (since that is probably what they are better known for) and I would give the andagi another chance because I feel like they could have been really good if they had been cooked properly. read more

"I attempted to order online to pick up from their location at Oakshire/255 Madison, to arrive and find out from another food truck vendor that they just haven't shown up for the past couple of days. I called them, emailed them, and reached out on Instagram to see if they'd be able to refund the purchase that they charged me for, and have not heard back from them through any of the avenues. I absolutely would understand if there was some matter that prevented them from being in to fulfill the order that they took my money for, but the lack of communication and response anywhere from them left a sour taste that I don't think I'll be back for. This is a cute little food card in the parking lot of Thinking Tree. Incredibly easy to order and have a contactless pick up. You can order and pay through their website. My order was ready for me as soon as I got there. Now, I made the mistake of continuing with my errands after I picked up the food. This resulted in the broth for the ramen being cooler than if I would have eaten it right away. The noodles were clumped together and were actually pretty difficult to eat. This may have been remedied with warmer broth. I really enjoyed the flavors though! It was their vegetarian ramen and the addition of the corn and bamboo shoots was a really nice touch. My husband had their Char Sui rice bowl. He really liked it. So the next time I order from here I will make sure that it is when I can consume the ramen immediately or go with one of their rice bowls. read more

For those who know me, it is a well renowned fact that I am a true ramen snob. Being from New York, the ramen was always gourmet, and nothing short of spectacular goodness. Moving to Eugene, OR only proved to devastate my tastebuds, with the city's alleged "finest" ramen spot being a grease pit disaster that created a desperate need for me to immediately change my clothes upon exiting. I am more than happy to exclaim that is no longer an issue. Ojisan's serves a very authentic and mouth watering delicious ramen with pork belly that has earned the right to be called pork belly, not a common occurrence in this town. The ingredients in this food were fresh, well cooked, beautifully presented and nothing short of fantastic. I highly recommend this side of the road gemstone. I'm known by all my friends to be obsessed with ramen so I had to give this food truck a try after seeing the photos! The presentation and broth was solid, and the cooks were really sweet(great customer service)! I got the Tan Tan ramen with a side of Karaage. Ramen: The soft boiled egg was perfect, the pork was really delicious too. Main feedback is the noodles tasted very bland, which isn't something I'd usually notice; they might need salt or something to harmonize with the broth, because otherwise it was what affected my meal the most. Judging by appearance, texture and taste(?), they were undercooked... Karaage: Wasn't crispy(likely due to being in a takeout box), and tasted strangely sweet with a squishy texture. The presentation was pleasant though and it was nice to get lots of sauce. I'll assume it probably tastes better fresh. Honestly I did not have high hopes for any kind of ramen shop in Eugene. My hopes are even lower now lol The food service was quick and the clerk was very nice (but that's the only saving grace). My partner and I got the miso ramen, curry ramen, and a side of chicken karaage. The miso ramen broth was very bland and tasted like warm water. The curry ramen broth tasted like very-watered down Japanese curry after they spilled too much white sugar into the broth. The toppings on each ramen also were not done justice and added nothing to the ramen. The pork was also rubbery and hard to chew. The chicken karaage was not at all like Japanese karaage (no flavor, weird texture), but the side of mayo tasted better than the entire meal. I don't know how they can spend six hours making pork broth and have it come out tasting like nothing. To be honest, don't label yourself as a Japanese food truck if you are not even going to try to recreate the flavor profile of the cuisine. Don't disrespect my culture like that. Thanks :3 read more

We were really excited when they opened in Corvallis (they are now at the Barn in Albany after only a few months in Corvallis). Unfortunately, this was a huge miss. We waited over an hour for our food even though they quoted us 20-30 minutes. Not easy when you have a baby with you, but we made it work. We got our order to go and brought it home, which was less than 5 minutes away. The broth was bland but not super horrible. The topings were ok. The part that gets this a one star, though, is the raw noodles. They were clumped together and inedible. Both my husband and I had to throw our food away and go out for something else. Even if the noodles had been cooked right, the taste just wasn't up to par. The gyoza was ok but nothing to write home about. I genuinely don't know how this place gets such good ratings. Maybe it just depends on who cooks the noodles that day, but we visit the Barn in Alabany often and are afraid to give them another try when there are so many amazing choices there. read more

Overall, the ramen was pretty good! I think it could have much more flavor (in terms of its strength). The flavor was there, I just wish it was stronger tasting. For example, I had to put quite a bit of soy sauce in the broth to get the flavor to come out. We enjoyed the Gyoza. It was very tasty with the supplemental sauce. Hands down the best tan tan I've had! It was just the right amount of spice enough to enjoy and finish since I can't really handle spice. The broth was hearty and the toppings were cooked to perfection. I'm so happy there's finally a good ramen place in Eugene! After trying many ramen places here, I kind of gave up on finding my favorite food.... I ended up adding garlic chips as a side later on and the chef brought me this sweet jalapeño chili oil concoction that really amped up the bowl. I still dream about it. Ask for those two toppings! Which was fine. I got my little dinner home & poured the broth over the noodles, pork & nori. It also had some bean sprouts & on other veggie. The broth was virtually tasteless. The noodles - under the bean sprouts, pork, green onions & egg - were just a gummy mess. Now the pork, egg & veggies were good. But I tossed the broth & noodles. The noodles were inedible. Heated the broth by itself to hot and added it to the bowl with all the veggies, meat etc, but the noodles were stuck at the base. Then heated again with soup thinking the noodles would release but they were still sticky and tasted pasty like flour. 2 stars for the umami broth. The karage was meh. Nothing like the picture shown.
