While the nail artists here are very skilled, but the pricing is pretty outrageous for such a no-frills space. I've been several times and always paid $100 for a short Japanese gel overlay. On my last visit, I was suddenly told that because my nails extended just slightly past my fingertips, it would cost an extra $50. I tried tokyo nails for the first time a few weeks ago because I wasn't really getting the quality of work I wanted in chinatown. I showed them a simple design and they were able to execute everything almost identically. I also especially appreciated the meticulous care they took to remove my old set AND to prep my cuticles in a way that was neat and not drilling too hard in the nail bed which was something that happened to me a few times in chinatown (salons to not be name). I've have the set for about four weeks now and they're still intact. My only comment is over the fact that i didn't schedule it for a hard gel set but then that's what i got and it was kind of too late to go back once that gel was applied so I paid for the extra cost. I went to Tokyo Nails in Lincoln Park and had a great experience. As I tired Mom of two I was looking for an easy way to look extra nice for an upcoming work trip. I did the press on nails which were really stunning and I had such a hard time choosing. The process was really nice but I was a little confused on how the length of the nails would be handled and afterwards it was clear they were waaay too long (I couldn't push the button to get my daughter out of her car seat). I was texted the next morning explaining the situation and they had me back in within a few hours to shorten them. The owner was so helpful and understanding and now I really love my nails. I've been coming to Tokyo Nails for 1 year now and I love it! Any design, any color, any art that you want, they can do! Bring in a photo of nails, a pattern or character, they can do it. I've had appliqués, hand painted art, 3D nails, colorful French... etc. In and out in like an hour or so. There is a pretty good system: associate nail techs remove existing art and shape your nails then one of the two artistic and talented sisters completes your design. I was very disappointed in the manicure that I got at Tokyo Nails. There was a lot of hype about how long the manicure lasts which was not my experience. It has been 7 days since I got my nails done. 2 days after my manicure my thumb polish came clean off. They were gracious enough to fix it free of charge. However, 2 days after that it came off again. Day 5 and 6, 3 more fingers were missing polish. For the amount of money they charge for what I see as a basic gel overlay, I expected to have a manicure that lasted at minimum 3 weeks and it didn't even make it 2 days. Service was quick, but I honestly don't see how it's worth paying $50 for press-on nails. They came off after just a week, and all the tech did was apply them and blow air to make them stick. I'm not sure how that's supposed to be an effective or "technical" way to apply press-ons. I could have done the same thing myself. To top it off, she handed me the glue afterward, almost like she knew they wouldn't last -- and sure enough, they fell off a week later. Definitely not worth the price. I was a long time customer trying to support this local business, and lenient when the nail techs were late to every single early morning appointment (more than half an hour). I then contracted COVID and talked to them on the phone, they told me I could use my funds for my appointment at a later time and to send them an instagram message. I did that, and I sent evidence of our phone call and my covid results with a screenshot, then they didn't honor the charge and are keeping my full $135 payment. I came here for the first time 2/14 and got gel extension manicure. Nomi did my nails and not even a walk later my index nail extension began lifting. I reached out and they were kind and swift with a response, and a different nail tech agreed to fix my nail the same day. I went in to get it fixed, and she fixed it but painted it a different color? I didnt feel like arguing because she isnt color blind and clearly knew what she waa doing. Not even a week later another nail broke at the stress point, which tells me they werent applied structurally sound. I paid 130 for a custom set, but unfortunately it didnt even last a week. I see a car pull up 30 mins later (I was waiting in my car bc it was a 90 degree day and this place is in the middle of nowhere.). I saw her sitting in her boyfriends car for an additional 7 mins, as I see her reject my phone calls. SO UNPROFESSIONAL!!!! When I walk in after giving her a few minutes to get in (almost an hour later) the place is FILTHY! There are used tools strewn about everywhere, none of the polishes put away, and ANTS crawling all over the stations. As I was figuring out how to make an excuse to get out of the chair, I see the girl hiding in the corner, pretending to put her gloves on but was really just texting!! Illuminate is awesome! I first came here because of a Gilt City deal but I'm definitely coming back. I've gotten two no-chips and a pedicure here, all of them perfect. The no-chips lasted for over 2 weeks with no chipping the entire time. My nail artist was Nomi (spelling?). She spent a good time working on my nails and did not rush it. I asked her for a design and she was easily able to do it. She mentioned she could do most designs as long as a picture was provided. This is amazing!! It's really hard to find nail technicians that can actually do designs. The design I chose looks simple but it's pretty hard to get as clean lines as she got. She was also very nice. I've met the owner before too and she is also very nice and polite. The decor is modern. The spa is spacious, clean and well decorated. They also provide hair styling and makeup application services. The location is a little difficult to get to but there is open street parking right in front of the salon. I'll definitely be coming back and trying out some designs that I wasn't able to find anyone else to do. read more

They are incredible here. Super friendly, reasonable prices, and dedicated to getting it right. I've never had a dip powder manicure last this long while being so close to the cuticle. If it chips or comes up on the side, you're free to go back and they will redo it. My friend and I were looking for a place that did nails on a Sunday evening and found Illuminate. I was there for a pretty straightforward pedicure, but it was the best one I've ever had. She scrubbed my feet until they were new and soft as a baby's, and really did a great job applying the polish. My sparkly toenails look as perfect a week later as they did walking out of the salon. My friend was there for a manicure, and needed some help repairing chewed fingernails. Each of the nail technicians took a hand and basically reconstructed each of her nails with gel. Their work was seriously transformative. I was amazed how natural and perfect the tips looked when they were done. Not only that, they were both really non-judgmental about the habit.
