A consistent, high-quality sushi place close to St. Paul's Hospital. I believe it's family-owned. I've been coming here since 2009, and I'm sure it's been here much longer than that. Today I ordered a spicy BC roll, chopped scallop roll, and spicy wild salmon roll. The spicy sauce on the wild salmon is sriracha and I'm glad they serve wild salmon here; it does make a difference. The chopped scallop roll is pretty standard. The real star today was the spicy BC roll, with tender BBQ salmon and skin with some imitation crab in it as well. For three pretty standard well-done rolls, add taxes and brown rice (not advertised very well but it's available!) the bill was $15. You could eat very well here for about $10 if you go with a combo, bento box, or chirashi don. read more

Came here during the week for lunch. It gets pretty busy during the lunch rush. We had a group of 5 and all of the tables inside were set up for 2. They do have a outdoor section too. I had the tuna and salmon chirashi don. The food here is what you would typically get from your average downtown sushi restaurant. Decent if you're in the area, but nothing to go out of your way for. You go up, pay, sit down and wait for your order. They have self serve tea and water on the side. Efficient. read more

If you're looking for cheap eats, this is one of them. I found this place randomly one evening and decided to give it a try. The service was very good and their food was decent. I overly ordered again so I can try more of their rolls. It was way too much good for two people. We ordered: rainbow roll, volcano rolls, salmon sashimi, gomae, and chopped scallop & toro nigiris. The nigiris were made with very fresh ingredients and I really enjoyed their toro. I also LOVED their gomae!!! I LOVED their peanut sauce and best part was it was drenched with lots of sesame seeds. We found an eyelash in one of our rolls and before we even spoke up their chef saw and quickly removed the dish and ordered us a brand new rolls instead. I appreciated their honestly and actions to correct the slight incident. Overall good cheap eats if you're craving quick Japanese food! read more

Prices are very reasonable! I think you can find rolls for as low as $2.75?! The actual pieces of fish in the sushi and maki are pretty good but the rice is not very flavourful. My husband commented that the spicy tuna roll tasted off - like the fish was rotten. I trusted his assessment and didn't feel the need to try it. Atmosphere is kind of lonely and blah. There is one guy behind the counter - working the till and also acting as a server. I think there are about 4 - 5 tables. In a city known for its sushi, I am kind of sad we wasted one stomach's worth of a meal here. I guess that is what you get when you don't plan ahead and just wander into the first place you run into :( read more

If you're like me, you're always up for a place that will let you get back to work quickly with a full stomach and a full wallet. This place is great for a quick bite at lunch. I find that when I'm in a hurry and want some quick sushi, this is the place to go. You walk in and you're greeted by a giant miso soup cauldron. It's serve yourself on the miso which is great because you get to add all the green onions you want! The options for the boxes are good and the portions are surprisingly large for the price you pay. You aren't going to walk away thinking you had the most savoury meal ever but you will walk away full, with money in your pocket and back to the office in under 20 minutes. read more

I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of food here. It's a tiny restaurant with not a lot of tables. No ambiance really, but it's a great lunch place because the food comes very quickly and the portion size is good enough to fill you up. Quality of the food is decent. The miso soup is flavourful. Salmon and tuna are decent tasting. Service is friendly, pleasant and no fuss. Best thing is I can be in and out within 30min and get back to the office. After trying a variety of items on the menu, I find the teriyaki sauce way too sweet and thick, but the udon is very nice and the quality of the fish is generally good. read more

Well, 2.5 stars really. My husband was starving when we arrived in Vancouver, and Tokyo Joe's was near the hotel. I wish I had let him just go to Subway like he wanted to because his meal was quite disappointing. I can't remember the dished he ordered because we ordered by #, but they were stir-fry noodles and teriyaki-style chicken with rice. I tasted them both; they were too sweet and tasted flat. I ordered tempura udon, and was happy. The tempura was mediocre (greasy, too much batter) but edible. The udon noodles and broth were delicious. I also appreciated having green tea included with the meal. I'd go back for the udon and to try the sushi. Skip the other dishes. read more

We stopped in here because we needed something to eat quickly before we saw a movie. We should have seen the warning signs when nobody else was there at 630 at night. I work at the hospital (one block away) so this place is convenient for lunch, I have never eaten here during dinner time or a weekend, so my review is strictly for weekday lunches. The food is slightly above average and the quality is high enough to be somewhat noticeable. You will literally just never be blown away by the food. I have eaten different things on the menu but sticking with the rolls is likely going to get you the best result. If it is busy in the restaurant, expect the rolls to come out looking a little forced. The Sashimi is passable but often served to cold, the Bento Boxes are not plentiful enough for my taste and the Donburi could be better overall. They also tend to go overboard with the 'mayo' and the Miso Soup is thin. The service is quality and always with a smile but depending on whom is working, there can be a slightly language barrier. The menu is not the most detailed for some parts of it (Bento Box for example) so questioning and/or altering can lead to minor problems. Not a big deal for me, but if you are picky or unfamiliar with menu items, this could lead to confusion. read more

Gouza pork dumplings were cooked fresh, but had mostly vegetables in them. Beef teriyaki rice bowl was mostly sprouts and rice and ONE PIECE OF BROCCOLI. Drowned it I. The service was terrible. My friend and I went there based on recommendation but I don't think I'll be coming back again, ever. Don't get me wrong, the actual server was very kind and quick to respond any time we needed something. The food wasn't too bad either, with the time between order and food arrival being very quick! What really appalled me, however, were who I believe to be the head chef and manager referring to me in what I can only assume to be a racial slur. I think the place was run by Koreans and my friend, who could speak Korean, told me after we had finished our meal that they were talking rudely about me due to my skin colour. I was told the head chef told the server "here is the blackie's order" in Korean. I don't think I have the nerve to come back here knowing that's what they referred to me as. read more

Even though it is a full 10 minute walk from my office, I frequent this place a couple times a month (weather dependant). The prices are very reasonable and the staff are always super attentive and friendly. On one occasion I accidentally ordered the wrong combo meal, and even though it was completely my mistake and I offered to pay for it anyway, they insisted that they would not charge me and made me the meal I had meant to order. I admit I am generally not much of a raw fan, so usually what I order are the more westernized items like California, dynamite, BC rolls etc., so I don't profess to pass judgement on the more traditional items. However, if you are like me, the items listed above are all excellent, as well as the chicken teryiaki, tempura and udon. My personal favourite here are the dynamite rolls which I consider to be the best I have had, which says something in a city like Vancouver. The only downsides I'm aware of are (I believe) you need to get a key from the staff for the washroom, but I've never had to ask so it is no real concern to me, and the fact that it is out of the way and not that convenient for many, although I do know they get a lot of traffic from St. Paul's Hospital. read more
