Parking lot is shared. It's hard to find an actual parking spot in the parking lot, but if you happen to see one, I wouldn't recommend taking it, unless you have a lot of patience and don't mind tight spaces. I just like to park on the street. There are many businesses in this small plaza and limited parking. Not to mention it's on a very busy street. When I entered there were a couple of people ahead of me waiting for their orders and only one person working. She was in the kitchen and no one was in the front, so we were all just waiting there, however, shortly after another worker came in. It's small and cozy at the same time. You are warmly greeted by the owner and the food and drink are delicious. We ordered by phone and the order was ready in 15 minutes. The food was piping hot. The drink is made when we arrived to keep it fresh and cool. Make sure to bring cash otherwise there is a service charge when using a card. I ordered a spicy chicken and rice dish (bumbu sambal something) and a Nasi Bunkus. The chicken dish tasted like it had ketchup in it and not the usual spice that usually comes with Indonesian food. Since moving out of state, it had been a few years since I physically ate at this restaurant. I missed my cendol and bakmi! This small mom and pop restaurant looked exactly as I remember it. Menu was quite extensive, but I always go to my fave, either the Lontong Toko Rame special or the noodle special. The cendol was yummy and sweet, and my childhood fave I could not miss on. It consisted of coconut milk, palm sugar, pandan jelly, and pieces of jackfruit. Went down so smoothly and easily. The bakmi was deelish- egg noodles cooked and seasoned perfectly with chicken, pork and shrimp and topped with a fried egg. The chicken sate was moist and topped with peanut sauce. The nasi rames - a sampler platter of the best is always a good go to as well. Service was great- water was always filled and extra napkins given without asking. Pay cash to avoid credit card surcharge. A questionable business has moved in two doors down from Toko Rame in this tight small strip mall. Each dish is quite pricey, though, and there is an additional charge if you pay with a credit card. The biggest drawback with Toko Rame is the limited hours. I'm torn between a 4 or a 5 because when we got there we were seated right away since we were only two tables eating in at that time, but someone came in that had a to go pick up which we later found out it was a very large order which definitely was placed before we got there. We were just patiently waiting since this is a small family owned restaurant being ran by two lovely ladies. It all worked out because we were able to go through the menu to make the right decision. Once we placed our order, it wasn't to long for our food to come out. The three items we ordered, Indonesian seafood fried rice, fried Pampano in a yellow curry, and deep fried oxtails were all a 10/10 in authentic flavor and deliciousness. The fish was a little bit spicy but it was very complementing to the flavor. The oxtails I must say was a style of preparation we have never tried before. It was tender, but fried to a crispy texture. It came with a spicy sambal style of chili sauce which went very well with it to give it that nice kick. The difference between Indonesian fried rice compared to Chinese fried rice is the Indonesian style is not oily, no scrambled eggs, nor peas and carrots. Somehow it has a lot of flavor. The ladies were very nice and apologetic for the time delay so I don't take that against them. Just be aware that service can possibly be slow, but the food was worth the wait. As there aren't all that many Indonesian restaurants around, I pounced at the opportunity to come here when I noticed it in passing one day while exiting the 91 freeway. Toko Rame is located in a small plaza with a medium number of parking spaces. The interior is also not that big with only 4-5 tables, though there were some tables outside under a tent too. The interior walls are adorned with some nice Indonesian touches though. The menu is extensive and filled with lots of goodies, many dishes unfamiliar to me. We eagerly ordered three different dishes to try. While the fried tripe was a bit dry and plain for me, the other two dishes were rich and flavorful (see photos for names and descriptions). We also relished the dessert (only one option available that day). Service was fantastic, with a truly kind and humble waitress, who astutely brought extra bowls to allow us to share the dishes. Now THIS is some authentic Indonesian cuisine! Worth the far drive, long wait, and sketchy parking. It's a very small hole in the wall restaurant, but the staff puts a lot of effort into making legit Indo food. I've dined in and had takeout; the food is bomb either way. I love the oxtail dish, satay, rendang, and that addictive peanut sauce that goes well with everything. They also sell some packaged krupuk and other snacking chips. Nasi bungkus is also a go-to, and it has a hefty portion of rice and sambal. Beware...that sambal is so spicy, it's gonna make you cry and your sinuses run. Inside the nasi bungkus, the chicken can be dry, and the rendang is a bit stingy. I think calling in your order ahead of time for pickup is definitely the way to go.
