I even chatted with one of the performers, and a random guy there told me, "You have to try Simpang Asia." Turns out, it's the same restaurant I had already mentioned to Kiana because it's near my physical therapist's clinic. So Kiana and I ended up here for Tuesday lunch after my PT session. I ordered the server's top recommendation -- the Nasi Bungkus -- and it did not disappoint. The beef and chicken were so tender and flavorful, paired with fresh vegetables and fragrant rice. It's been over 10 years since my last visit and I'm glad to say, the food is still amazing. I went here on Friday night at 7pm with reservations. We were unfortunately seated at the very back corner table so it was a bit uncomfortable and not very spacious. Service was quick and the food came out fast. Roti Paratha: so delicious. The flatbread is so buttery and perfected when dipped in the curry sauce. Lumpia: these came out piping hot! It's nothing special but it was good Nasi Bungkus: this is a fun experience having this dish served in a banana leaf and you have the fun of opening and unwrapping it. Hainanese Chicken Rice: the chicken is so moist and juicy and this dish was really tasty! Rendang: easily my fave. Both Simpang locations are awesome. I slightly prefer this palms location. The interior is less metallic and decorated with warmer colors. It's an instrumental player in creating a chill and homey good food energy field (joining forces is Madre across the street which makes brilliant fish taco). Bali Sea Bass is 10/10 amazing. Sweet chili sauce further moisturizes the already tenderly grilled fillet. Herbs on top balances overall flavor profile while providing an exotic experience. Beef rendang and chicken curry are less memorable. The meat is just a touch drier. But the alternative is to drive 40min to the eastern side, so we are still quite happy with what we have. Evvvvvery once and again I get to sneak away from my best friend, Hubs, and try something non-diner, non-Italian, non-pub grub. When I have a friend that says, 'Indonesian food? I've never tried it.' then it off to Simpang Asia!!!! I've been coming here since they were just a small market with delicious "street food" that reminded me of trips to Singapore, Malaysia and, of COURSE, Indonesia. Today I introduced my friend to SOME of my fave dishes - it's SO HARD to not over order! FIRST - before ANYTHING ELSE happens - the Lemper: sweet rice wrapped around shredded coconut chicken. I could eat this ALLLL DAY! The sweetness of the rice balances perfectly with the tender chicken. Next it was the Sea Bass. Perfectly grilled in banana leaves then covered with an intimidating looking Balinese style sambal chili sauce. But it's more flavorful than hot and that's what I love about the dishes here. Order the shrimp "chips" to dip in the sambal sauce so you don't miss a drop. We also ordered the traditional, can't miss, Char Kway Teow. This is what I used to get around 2am, after drinking and dancing and HUNGRY! A street vendor usually would prepare it with the protein he had that day. At Simpang Asia, the lovely wide rice noodles come with pieces of chicken sausage, fish balls, shrimp in a sauce with chili , some sprouts and an mixed in egg. It always hits the spot and is comfort food at its best. Not only is everything aromatic and flavorful, but the presentation is beautiful. Each dish is usually presented with a beautiful leaf and/or a lovely orchid. Thoughtfully presented and delicious. Simpang Asia and its wonderful staff just make me happy to dine here. Don't forget the Es Cendol to drink! Coconut milk and palm sugar hold little, bright green jellied pandan, that hold just a hint of vanilla. We wanted something a little different and that would have a lot of flavor - Simpang Asia met the mark! We had a reservation on a Sunday evening for 5 people. Got there a few minster because of traffic and challenging parking, but only had to wait a couple of minutes. The staff was terrific and very attentive throughout. The appetizers, rice and noodles were all delicious. The mains were okay but not nearly as good. We loved the roti paratha, siomay Bandung (not sure why they don't recommend for people not used to Indonesian food - the peanut sauce is amazing), nasi goreng, and char kway teow. Of the mains, the sea bass was good but the beef rendang and garlic chicken didn't have the complexity of flavors that everything else had. LA is crawling with Thai, Japanese, Indian, Korean, and Chinese restaurants but I can't say I've come across an Indonesian restaurant before which makes this place unique. Simpang Asia was recommended to me by a friend and I'm so happy I tried it out. We made a reservation through Yelp and they also have a waitlist during peak times. Once we arrived we were seated right away and served quickly. Overall Ambiance is also nice inside, but if you're okay with more chill they also have seating outside off to the side of the parking. The food is really good and fresh. My husband and I came with friends and everyone really enjoyed their food. We ordered Roti as an appetizer. It was definitely on the small side and one dish was really only enough for 2 people. The curry dipping sauce it came with was very flavorful and we saved it for later. For our entrees I got the Mie Ayam which is essentially garlic noodles - awesome dish with a nice balance of veggies, starch and protein :) My husband got Nasi Bungkus which was the first meal listed under their traditional section. The presentation was cool - the chicken came wrapped up and it was a ton of food. We also ordered the Black Rice Pudding for dessert - super yummy and I'd come again for it. Food was tasty and it's great that there's options with various combos so you can try different things without having to order too much. Great for family style. The lemper was probably my favorite but didn't get a picture of it, it was savory and the rice was not that sweet. Our server was weird, she gave the vibe that she did not really want to serve us. Yes we were a group of 12 but we had designated people to handle the ordering process and the restaurant was slow so it was unusual. We had very limited table space so everytime new plates came out, no one was getting the empty ones we finished so we had to flag down to get them cleared. Standard flaky roti paratha with flavorful curry but the portion was a bit small. Presented very well though. Char kway teow: 9/10. I would come back just for this. I spent the summer in Singapore last year and this brought me back. Packed so much flavor, so many proteins, and that wok hei is something you just can't recreate at home. Beef rendang: 8/10. We finally made our way back to this Simpang location and the food was as good as we remembered from our last visit. Simpang is still our go to for Indonesian food in the LA area. Good service and great tasting food. We arrived early as the girls had a concert at Intuit Dome that night. This also ensured that we found a parking spot in the lot as its more challenging with the outdoor dining tent occupying a couple of the stalls.. We opted for the indoor seating and ordered some a mix of new and favorite dishes. Char Kway Teo had its characteristic smoky flavor with a good mix of veggies and protein. Nasi Goreng with chicken was quite flavorful. Kang Kong veggies came out sizzling but the shrimp paste used was more subtle versus our past experience. Bali Sea Bass was our new favorite fish dish covered in a sweet and spicy sambal. Both the Vietnamese coffee and Thai iced teas were strong and just the right sweetness for us. Came here with my partner's family on a whim after a long day at the Getty and it was really good for a last minute stop. As far as Indonesian food goes, it wasn't the most mindblowingly good restaurant I had ever been to but it ultimately was much more tasty than some of the other offerings in the area if you wanted Southeast Asian food. Chicken Sate: 5/5 very different look and taste the the normal everyday peanut sate that most Southeast Asian joints will have but it was uniquely savory and was one of the standouts of the afternoon. Laksa: 4/5 pretty creamy and luscious. Noodles were nice and plentiful to feed 5. Char Kway Teow: 3/5 this is my favorite Indonesian dish and unfortunately this one, while still very tasty, did not hit the mark in terms of what I have come to known from this dish. Traditional restaurants usually have thinner noodles (although flat rice noodles are perfectly fine) with tons of 'wok hei' or wok smoke flavor. However this really lacked that charred taste that defines a good Char Kway Teoy. It more resembles a Pad See Ew, and even then, many places make a better tasting one. Largely disappointing here. Beef Rendang (not shown): 3.5 perfectly fine flavor wise but nothing to write home about. Comes with coconut rice which helped cut through the richness. Misc: there was very much a lack of overall spicy and umami across most of the dishes - didn't offer fried anchovies, peanuts, satay, or sambal sauces that are the usual accompaniments to these dishes. read more

WOW this place was good. We came in on a hot day and the air conditioning was at full blast - a welcome respite if a bit chilly, we were immediately warmed by the mouthwatering fresh and hot food brought from the kitchen. The chicken satay and beef roll were perfect appetizers, and had a unique taste that left you wanting more. My friend doesn't like chicken curry, but we cleaned the plate. The chicken fell of the bone and was so moist and flavorful. The noodles were excellent as well, and the Thai tea was the perfect level of sweet. Very disgusting customer service. This is the second time I've had a negative experience with this restaurant. I ordered food through DoorDash, and it was so salty that I couldn't eat it. I called the restaurant to let them know and asked if they could offer a refund or some kind of resolution. The employee told me that those were their ingredients and there was nothing they could do. When I asked again if they could help, he responded by asking, "Is that something you usually do?" I found this response rude and unprofessional.
