Was craving Indonesian food so I tried Mr. Sate out with my friends, and was not disappointed! The interior is cute, clean, and comfy.I'm pretty sure they have a free parking lot in the back which is super convenient for if you're driving to get here. The prices are very reasonable, especially by LA standards, and the staff are friendly and attentive. Sadly, I have a peanut allergy, so I wasn't able to try the satay, but according to my friends, it was really good! I got the Soto Betawi though, and it was super delicious and flavorful. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely come back the next time I'm craving Indonesian food. 3.5 stars. Good to above average Indonesian food. Chicken satay was excellent. Savory and sweet at the same time. Popcorn shrimp was on a skewer. The kids like it. It was crispy on the outside and the shrimp was slightly on the firm side and slightly savory. Nasi capcay included a lot of fresh vegetables. It had more liquidy sauce than expected . The veggies soaked up the liquids quickly and began to get a little soggy. However the veggies were savory. The dish could use more greens. NOTE: this dish comes with shrimp which was NOT disclosed in the menu. We specifically ordered veggie only. One party member wanted a veggie dish but could not eat it due to shrimp allergies. Let them know to cook without shrimp if you have shrimp allergies The Nasi bunkus was delicious. Traditional Indonesian food would typically have a lot more tumeric and spicyness but this dish felt more streamlined. You can ask for more turmeric and spicyness if you prefer. Also The chicken was flavorful but a bit dry. The Riice was good, flavorful and not greasy. Perkedelle was tender but did not have as much crispyness as other perkedelle that ive had. The potato inside was not as light and fluffy as expected (compared to other perkedelle) and was instead on the slightly dense side. It was still good. The Bakwang jagung, or corn fritters, were both crispy and a bit dense and sticky. It was savory and was not greasy at all. We liked this dish. Es doger was good BUT had tough meat husks in the drink. The coconut flavor and bits were a nice addition to the drink. The casava and condensed milk had the right amount without being overpowering. If not for the husks in the drink, i would recommend it. Es cendol was heavy on the condensed milk and slightly overrpowered the pandan jelly and bits of jackfruit. It was ok. I visited this restaurant on an early Monday evening and there were little to no patrons there. The interior is small, but comfy and there's also an outdoor seating area. There were a lot of different things on the menu, but I ended up ordering the Nasi Kuning because it came with a bit of everything. Firstly, the tumeric fried chicken. It was good and crispy, but on the dryer side which I don't prefer, but a lot of Southeast Asian cuisine likes their meat well done. Next is the yellow coconut milk rice which was flavorful and fluffy. The egg balado and perkedel were good, but I was a bit disappointed with the fried noodles. They seemed old and not very flavorful. This was all a good portion size for $16.50 and I left pretty full. The staff here are super nice and even asked me if I was Indonesian haha! A gem of a find! It's a refreshing change of flavors in the asian food scene on this side of LA. The Sate has a mild sweetness with the creamy peanut butter. Beef potato had a nice little kick. Came here on a Monday around 6:30 pm. There were free spots on the street right in front but they also claim to have free parking in the back, I just didn't get a chance to look. The restaurant was completely empty when we went inside but we were greeted immediately and told to sit wherever we like. The inside doesn't have too many tables but it doesn't seem like a lot of people come by. 2 more small groups ended up coming in during our stay and 1 person came to order to-go. The bathroom was clean and had a nice mural on the wall. Service was quick and friendly throughout the meal. We decided to get the bakwan jagung (corn fritters), nasi bungkus (banana leaf wrapped dish), and combo #3 with Soto batawi. We also got es cendol and es teler for desserts. The bakwan jagung were delicious. Crispy and simple and tasted excellent dipped in the sweet and savory sauce. The nasi bungkus had great flavor but we were disappointed that there were only 2 pieces of beef for the beef rendang. The chicken and veggies were plentiful though. Each of the skewers that came with the combo #3 were good and well seasoned, but we didn't like the perkedel (fried croquette) because it was cold, colder than room temp. The soto batawi was tasted good though and had a good amount of beef, tomato, and potato. The desserts were both delicious, a little cold on the chilly night because of the crunchy ice but both were sweet and had good flavor. We were happy with the meal but were disappointed in the temperature of the meal. Everything seemed luke-warm except for the corn fritters and the perkeldel (which was pretty cold). The prices were decent though. I would like to give it another try sometime but I think I prefer Simpaang just around the block. Wow, I'm impressed. This food is authentic. I just came back from a trip to Singapore and Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali) and the food here tastes very authentic similar to what I got in Indonesia. The sate here is actually better than the street food I found in Jakarta and better than the hawker stalls I tried in Singapore. The gado gado tastes just like how it was made in Bali although the peanut sauce is sweeter than necessary, I guess modified for the American palette. I'm also happy to find Emping here! They are these chips fried from these bitter nuts. I discovered it in Indonesia and love them so much. I also tried the Nasi Kuning, delicious and served with 2 kinds of sambal. The sambal wasn't the best but at least they had it unlike other fusion restaurants in the area. Overall, the food here is better quality and cooked with even better flavors than some of the resort and street food I found in Indonesia! In the Palms area, I've also tried Mee & Greet and Simpang. Mee & Greet's food was just disgusting with cheap ingredients, zero flavor. Simpang's too fusion-y and mixed in quality. Their Cah Kangkung (water spinach on an iron griddle) was fire and salmon was good but everything else was mid. There's street parking out front and a parking garage behind it. When we walked in, It had a cute interior with multiple tables and looks like it's family owned. We started with the popcorn chicken sate (2 pieces) and I ate it with the sambal. It was crispy and the chicken was juicy on the inside. I got the Mie Goreng and my friend got the Nasi Goreng combo which came with sides including the sate. Both did not disappoint and was full of authentic flavor. Casual Indonesian spot in Palms I was pretty excited for lunch here, but ultimately, the dishes were a hit or miss. The corn fritters were excellent--crispy and served with a sweet soy sauce I would have been happy to douse my rice with. The sate was good. They grill each skewer individually by hand, so it does take a bit of time, but the char is worth it. I only wish the skewers were packed with more meat! I went for Combo #2 which consisted of the soto mie, 2 chicken sate, 1 shrimp balado, 1 perkedel (potato patty with filling) and steamed rice. The soto mie (beef noodle soup) was a bit plain. The beef was too well done and the soup could have been richer. It honestly felt more like a side than the accoutrements it was served with. The perkedel was a pleasant surprise. I love potato in any form so I thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed potato patty. I also opted for an avocado smoothie. It wasn't as sweet as what I've had at other places, but still satisfied the craving.
