First time here and wow, I am very impressed! We ordered the Mi Goreng (fried noodles) and Nasi Goreng (fried rice). I've only ever had the instant Indomie Mi Goreng before, so this was my first time trying it fresh at a restaurant, and it honestly blew my mind. Everything was super flavorful, fresh, and well balanced. As a Chinese person, the flavors felt both unique and familiar at the same time, which I really enjoyed. You can tell there's some overlap in ingredients and techniques, but the spices and sauces make it distinctly Indonesian. Definitely a great local spot and I'm happy to support a small business. If you're craving Indonesian food on the cheaper side in the Culver/Westside area, this spot is a decent option. I visited this restaurant on an early Monday evening and there were little to no patrons there. The interior is small, but comfy and there's also an outdoor seating area. There were a lot of different things on the menu, but I ended up ordering the Nasi Kuning because it came with a bit of everything. Firstly, the tumeric fried chicken. It was good and crispy, but on the dryer side which I don't prefer, but a lot of Southeast Asian cuisine likes their meat well done. Next is the yellow coconut milk rice which was flavorful and fluffy. The egg balado and perkedel were good, but I was a bit disappointed with the fried noodles. They seemed old and not very flavorful. This was all a good portion size for $16.50 and I left pretty full. The staff here are super nice and even asked me if I was Indonesian haha! There's also a parking structure behind the restaurant you can park at. Overall, I think this is a solid Indo restaurant and while it's not mind-blowing, I'd still recommend. read more

A gem of a find! It's a refreshing change of flavors in the asian food scene on this side of LA. The Sate has a mild sweetness with the creamy peanut butter. Beef potato had a nice little kick. Wow, I'm impressed. This food is authentic. I just came back from a trip to Singapore and Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali) and the food here tastes very authentic similar to what I got in Indonesia. The sate here is actually better than the street food I found in Jakarta and better than the hawker stalls I tried in Singapore. The gado gado tastes just like how it was made in Bali although the peanut sauce is sweeter than necessary, I guess modified for the American palette. I'm also happy to find Emping here! They are these chips fried from these bitter nuts. I discovered it in Indonesia and love them so much. I also tried the Nasi Kuning, delicious and served with 2 kinds of sambal. The sambal wasn't the best but at least they had it unlike other fusion restaurants in the area. Overall, the food here is better quality and cooked with even better flavors than some of the resort and street food I found in Indonesia! In the Palms area, I've also tried Mee & Greet and Simpang. Mee & Greet's food was just disgusting with cheap ingredients, zero flavor. Simpang's too fusion-y and mixed in quality. Their Cah Kangkung (water spinach on an iron griddle) was fire and salmon was good but everything else was mid. Mr. Sate's the best because everything I've had so far has been authentic, flavorful, and delicious! Come here. read more

Came here on a Monday around 6:30 pm. There were free spots on the street right in front but they also claim to have free parking in the back, I just didn't get a chance to look. The restaurant was completely empty when we went inside but we were greeted immediately and told to sit wherever we like. The inside doesn't have too many tables but it doesn't seem like a lot of people come by. 2 more small groups ended up coming in during our stay and 1 person came to order to-go. The bathroom was clean and had a nice mural on the wall. Service was quick and friendly throughout the meal. We decided to get the bakwan jagung (corn fritters), nasi bungkus (banana leaf wrapped dish), and combo #3 with Soto batawi. We also got es cendol and es teler for desserts. The bakwan jagung were delicious. Crispy and simple and tasted excellent dipped in the sweet and savory sauce. The nasi bungkus had great flavor but we were disappointed that there were only 2 pieces of beef for the beef rendang. The chicken and veggies were plentiful though. Each of the skewers that came with the combo #3 were good and well seasoned, but we didn't like the perkedel (fried croquette) because it was cold, colder than room temp. The soto batawi was tasted good though and had a good amount of beef, tomato, and potato. The desserts were both delicious, a little cold on the chilly night because of the crunchy ice but both were sweet and had good flavor. We were happy with the meal but were disappointed in the temperature of the meal. Everything seemed luke-warm except for the corn fritters and the perkeldel (which was pretty cold). The prices were decent though. I would like to give it another try sometime but I think I prefer Simpaang just around the block. It's busier and has tighter parking and wait times but it would be my first choice because it also has more menu options and prices are somewhat similar. read more

Casual Indonesian spot in Palms I was pretty excited for lunch here, but ultimately, the dishes were a hit or miss. The corn fritters were excellent--crispy and served with a sweet soy sauce I would have been happy to douse my rice with. The sate was good. They grill each skewer individually by hand, so it does take a bit of time, but the char is worth it. I only wish the skewers were packed with more meat! I went for Combo #2 which consisted of the soto mie, 2 chicken sate, 1 shrimp balado, 1 perkedel (potato patty with filling) and steamed rice. The soto mie (beef noodle soup) was a bit plain. The beef was too well done and the soup could have been richer. It honestly felt more like a side than the accoutrements it was served with. The perkedel was a pleasant surprise. I love potato in any form so I thoroughly enjoyed the stuffed potato patty. I also opted for an avocado smoothie. It wasn't as sweet as what I've had at other places, but still satisfied the craving. If I were to return, I'd likely only opt for apps and sate and skip on the fried rice/noodle dishes. Order at the counter and watch them prep your dish through the open-air kitchen! read more

We started with the popcorn chicken sate (2 pieces) and I ate it with the sambal. It was crispy and the chicken was juicy on the inside. From the kindness of the owner and the staff to the delicious food made from scratch, you can feel the love with every bite you get. We got a whole feast--chicken sate, beef and potato sate, short rib sate, and soto betawi. All these dishes were so delicious. Each dish was full of flavor and the meats were so tender! The fritters were super hot and fresh and delicious. We split the Combo #2 and paid for the Soto Batawi (coconut beef soup) upgrade and i'm SO glad we did. That soup was possibly the most flavorful thing I've ever eaten - it was warm and well-spiced, not too salty, and just a pleasure. The chicken and short rib satay were both great. The potato/beef dumpling was yummy. The interior was clean, comfortable, and bright, but pretty basic tables and chairs.
