It's really disappointing when you plan your weekend around a special Father's Day brunch with your family, only to have a mediocre experience. I don't remember our server's name, but we didn't receive three of the items we ordered. Two of them weren't even on the receipt--so it seems like they were never entered into the system in the first place. Instead of owning up to it, the server tried to blame the kitchen. We never got our ceviche, and by the time she checked on us (when we were nearly done eating), I told her to forget it. She said she'd cancel it, but then, oddly enough, it showed up after we were done eating and ready to pay--when our plates had already been cleared. To top it off, a $50 gratuity was automatically added for our party of six (four of whom were kids), despite the poor service. No real adjustments were made. The server said she'd "get us a discount," but all that happened was the missing items were removed from the bill--bringing the gratuity down to $47. We are generous tippers when service is fair, but in this case, I should've been able to determine what the service was worth. Spending nearly $300 at Toca Madera with no real accommodations or accountability was incredibly disappointing, especially since we enjoyed our first visit back in December. I came to Toca Madera for a birthday dinner. I've never heard of this place for and while researching the menu beforehand I saw it was kind of an elevated Mexican fusion restaurant. We had reservations on this Saturday night which I recommend because it was extremely packed and busy. We were seated once the entire party arrived. I started off with the Noble Margarita because if it has a little spice I want it. It was tasty but I wish it was a tad bit stronger. For dinner I was back and forth between several entrees my usual dilemma. I decided to go with the Chicken Al Pastor and a side of cilantro rice. Let's start with the rice. It was lukewarm which is a pet peeve of mine and when I took a bite it tasted like earth no other way to put it. I put that to the side. The chicken al pastor was ok. It wasn't what I'm normally used to but it was ok. My friends all had the same sentiments with their entrees as well. Not too bad but nothing to write home about. Minus 10 starts!!!! We were excited to go celebrate our daughter's 18th birthday this past Saturday, Feb. 15th. Had reservation for 6 people at 7pm, we were stuck in Houston traffic and GPS said we would be there by 7:16 YES, I am aware of their 15-minute grace window, I called and called and called and called and kept calling ONLY to get no answer. We get there at 7:17pm to be told our reservation had been released, I told the host I had tried calling numerous times and she said it was busy night and they had no one to answer the phones, even though there were about 3 girls at the check in stand and only ONE seemed to be working, I got asked if I wanted to wait and see IF my party could be accommodated, we decided to wait and at around 7:40pm we get told that we can seated ONLY if we would be done eating and out of the establishment by 9pm, as excited as my daughter was to be there and celebrate her 18th birthday at Toca Madera we decided to stay and have a rushed dinner, we had with us a cake is a LARGE box wrap in plastic, very secured, the cake was custom and it was $180 for a 8", the host at the front desk asked if we wanted them to put cake in the fridge and bring it to us later, after we had had our dinner; we said yes and were instructed to leave the cake there with the host. We get sited, our waiter comes to the table, he was very pleasant and explained the menu. We eat, while being aware of the time on the clock because we agreed to be done and out by 9pm to accommodate the next reservation. Around 8:40 we ask for the cake and the check so we can be out on time... the waiter said sure and walk off, time passes and passes and passes, around 9pm the waiter come to our table and says, "Did you guys bring the cake that was flipped?" very calmly I said "Flipped? what do you mean, flipped?" he then tells my husband and I "I didn't think so but I had to ask, looks like someone dropped the box with the cake and is it completely messed up, my kitchen manager is trying to see if we can do anything to fix it..." I then told him my daughter hadn't even seen the cake and hadn't taken pictures with it... and it was messed up. While maintaining my composure for my daughter's sake, I asked if he could bring the cake, let me take a picture of her WITH the best-looking side of the cake and he did, all I wanted to do at this point was CRY and run out, make a scene as other customers would have done if all this was happening to their ONLY daughter who was celebrating such a big milestone birthday. He brings the cake, we take pics, and he takes the cake back to the kitchen cuts it for us. He then packs the rest of the demolished cake and bring it to us, the whole box was broken from 2 sides at the bottom, the lid had frosting all over it. We then asked for the check, paid it, we got an apology from the waiter ONLY the manager never came to talk to us, the kitchen manager did not bother to come apologize, it was as if we were being made a favor by what your staff had done and did not accept accountability. We left and the minute we got home I broke down and told my husband NEVER AGAIN WILL WE STEP FOOT IN THAT PLACE, WE WILL NO RECOMEND IT TO ANYONE AND WILL MAKE SURE TO TELL PEOPLE OUR STORY to discourage anyone from going there. For the average household to go celebrate such an import even at your establishment to only feel as being discriminated against and treated with no empathy is by far the worst experience we have ever had anywhere. Look, I get Valentine's Day is a big deal. But this placed upset me for a few reasons to be a high end place. 1. The reservation we set up didn't mean anything. We showed 2min after our reservation was set (dealing with Valet), and were told "we're a little busy tonight, please go wait at the bar until your table was ready". We go to the bar, 25 min later, I went back to the hostess and we were next up on the list. Again, reservations for what? 2. We arrived at our table...or at least their version of a table (see photo) . MULTIPLE servers told me they crammed smaller cocktail/speak easy tables in throughout the restaurant due to increase in reservations for Valentine's Day. Needless to say, it wasn't enough room to comfortably enjoy our dinner. Not even going to mention having to borrow the lamp to see the menu on the side of the table because we couldn't put it on top. And there was a ton of foot traffic around our makeshift table, we both constantly had to lean forward with servers passing by with the fire drinks and food dishes by our heads. 3. I don't have any subscriptions issue for paying for 2 small tacos for 33.00 or the A5 wagyu flight at 93.00oz then you get the bill and it's different. But what got us and will be the turning point was the bill for 2 people that was 860.00 that they added gratuity to without telling us. Yes we probably should have looked at bill closer but at the bottom it shows suggested gratuity. So we double tipped. Actually tipped 25% additional on the bill that already had the gratuity !!! We stayed to finish our drinks and went to valet. The waiter had to have known getting a 40+% tip and said nothing. We figured this out on the way home and called the next day. Toca / Noble33 was not interested in anything we had to say and ghosted us. Which is cool, we will never eat at a place owned by this company and will make sure to tell all of our foodie friends what a scummy place this is. Drinks are overpriced at $27 for a cocktail, still water $11/bottle this is Houston not Vegas. Food was meh, nothing special and we could have gotten much better tasting food for a lot less. Ordered sea bass tacos and very heavy on breading and little fish. The carrots were the tasty. Flat iron steak was chewy but had a decent flavor, the filet was a little better than Texas roadhouse. Retrospectively I am feeling the need to clear the air regarding this place. The noise is not noticeable unless you've never been to a club before. The music choice is good and the theatrics are enjoyable. I've never encountered any issue with the service, and it all comes down to how I communicate with the server. I've spent 2+ hours here for a meal and about 1 hour on a busy Saturday when I was in a rush. Lastly, the food is crazy good. I am not normally a steak person, but I was extremely jealous of my date that ordered the strip steak. The burger and Mac n Cheese are my staples, but the strip steak has been added to that list. If you are debating about coming here, stop doing so and just come; but be sure to check for a reservation or seating at the bar/kitchen bar. I chose to rate 5 stars, because none of my experiences here have been worth 4 stars. My only complaint is the time it takes between showing up for a reservation and being seated. But that is to be expected in any job that can become overwhelmed with short staffing and big parties. Therefore I do not take a star away, since this is not a variable that can be controlled. First time here, and my significant other made reservations for us. Upon us arriving, timely, we had to wait for a table for two to be ready still. When questioned about this the hostess replied " we are busy and we don't have time to answer the phone" as well as that it's in their policy that they don't have to give us a courtesy call .. I have not been able to find that "policy" but regardless that isn't how a restaurant should handle reservations or the phones.
