Dakos Salad
Adriana E.

I had a wonderful lunch at To Steki. The restaurant was very bright and clean, and we very much enjoyed the traditional music they were playing. I ordered the Dakos salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was moist and flavorful, and the salad was delicious! Our waitress recommended it and I am so glad she did! The Spanakopita we shared was perfect. My brother raved about the greek burger sandwich. My mom was iffy about the pork in the gyro she got, but everything else was great.

Came here for dinner based on great reviews of this place! I can see why people really recommend this to be a popular Greek restaurant in the East Queens area! The flavors in these dishes is perfection and definitely coming back to try more of their menu! We enjoyed the zucchini patties so much and the grilled shrimp with peas and carrots is a must :) friendly staff and very helpful/knowledgable on their menu and it's a beautiful restaurant, nicely decorated and the color blue they use is very pleasing to look at!

My new Greek restaurant is in Whitestone! The food was authentic and delicious. The ambiance fantastic. Great place to hang out and have some drinks and wine with great food. The staff was fantastic especially the owner Laki. We had a blast with our best friends this evening.

This restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere. The staff was friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed the octopus appetizer. The octopus was cooked to perfection and very tasty. We also enjoyed the three spread appetizer. However, they did not serve it with enough pita bread slices. We received the same amount of pita bread triangle slices (about 10) as we received with the small complimentary hummus. And when we asked for more pita, we were charged $4 for a pita basket. I've been to numerous Greek restaurants that do not charge for extra pita. They also charged $5 for a fountain soda. We also ordered fried calamari, feta saganaki, spinach rice and moussaka. These dishes were okay. They didn't wow us.

Excellent fresh food, generous portions, with a great, polite, and attentive staff! I loved the Greek salad, calamari and their yummy desserts.

Grilled Calamari

To Steki roughly translates to "hangout". If you look on their website the full name is To Steki Tou Laki which changes it to "Laki's Place" either way I am a fan of the comfortable causal white, black and wood of this place. Once you settle in warmed pita and a dip comes. The first time I was here it was a great taramasalata and the next it was hummus (disappointingly I didn't see tarama on the menu). For me, eating Greek means eating family style even if you are family of two. Nearly every time it consists of a horiatiki salad - they make a quintessential version here nicely dressed with slab of delish feta. The grilled calamari is tender with a nice char flavor - I may like this better than their octopus here. I enjoyed the gigantes (giant beans in tomato sauce). Many times we make a meal of "apps" for a nice variety, but sometimes order some delicious grilled meats. The lamb chops are tender and delicious and the lemon potatoes were done right. Horta, the slightly bitter dandelion greens with olive oil and lemon are made the way they should be. I've observed couples ordering the mix grill for 2 that come out as a super generous platter which looks like it can feed 4 or more - it makes me wonder if they are on a date and how are they going to have sexy time after? haha. A solid place that is on my short list when I am looking to get my Greek on.

Hummus Spread

First impressions matter...I was turned off to say the least by the employee who answered the phone of this establishment when my friend and I called to place an order for takeout. She seemed disorganized, spacey, and unfocused...repeating herself, saying another patron was calling, and then suddenly the call dropped. We attempted to call back twice with two different mobile devices and both times it went straight to voicemail. Furthermore, she didn't bother to callback to confirm the order or apologize for the sudden disconnect. I then proceeded to use GrubHub via Yelp to place our order - Horiatiki Salad with Grilled Chicken, Prasini Salad with Grilled Chicken (which was missing the feta cheese), and Hummus Spread. After placing our order my phone rang...it was the employee from our initial attempt to order takeout. She asked if we had called prior and to cancel our GrubHub order because the first order was completed and waiting on us for pickup. How could that be possible if we never confirmed due to the call dropping? Yet, again in the midst of all this confusion the call dropped again. Now, I had an utterly bad taste in my mouth via this Greek establishment and wanted to cancel my order in its entirety! My friend then said, I hope they aren't going to give us the first unconfirmed order as our GrubHub order because our food is going to be cold, stale, and wilted. As we parked we noticed a bag on the counter via GrubHub pickup. I asked if it was our order and we were told it was. I expressed my concern(s) via the unprofessionalism and how his/her employee shouldn't pickup the phone if not trained properly, etc. All that was heard was apologies but nothing to make us whole. We could have been offered soft drinks to go or dessert? At times an apology goes so far after multiple attempts to rectify the situation via callbacks and voicing our concerns. Not to our surprise...as we arrived at home our takeout order was indeed the first initial phone order that was taken. The pita bread was hard and cold, lettuce was wilted/cooked, and grilled chicken dry. Additionally, one salad was missing the feta cheese. I was truly disappointed and had hopes that the owner(s) would rectify the situation when we arrived to pick up our order and voiced our concerns. However, the only thing that was provided to us were many apologies. We believe that the employee needs better training via takeout orders being placed on phone, customer service, and how to multitask. I would rather drive a further distance (such as Bell Blvd) than walk down the block for Greek mediterranean cuisine with horrible customer service and value.

Octopus Plate

The cutest date spot for Greek food. We came on a weekday evening and was easily seated. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. The menu covers a wide range of food from grilled fares to pasta. We got the octopus appetizer to start. I loved the grilled smokey flavor but it was definitely too salty for me. For the entree we got their lobster pasta special, which came with a whole lobster and some cheesy tomato spaghetti. The portion was huge and there was enough pasta for 3 maybe even 4 people. My boyfriend and I ended up taking the rest to go. I would have preferred if the pasta was lighter on the cheese. My favorite thing was admittedly their pita bread and hummus offered by default to each table. Both were fresh and tasted like they were hand made. I would love to come back and try some of their grilled lamb chops or the bifteki.

We went to To Steki today for Mother's Day. We had a party of 7 and had a great experience. All the food was fresh and well cooked. Presentation was awesome and food was delicious. Seafood was fresh and very well prepared as well as all the other entrees. Complimentary hot pita bread and hummus was served. Prices were very reasonable in my opinion for what is a very high end dining experience. The wait staff were top notch and it felt like we were in a dinner banquet. They took great detail to ensure we had a clean table and even reset utensils on to a clean napkin when they noticed it was not while we waited for the next course. The attention to detail by the wait staff was astounding! We recommend To Steki if you want great Greek food and most excellent service!

Disappointing Easter Celebration - Not Worth the 2-Hour Drive…read more My family and I (a party of five, including my elderly mother) visited Plateia GR on Sunday, April 12th at 3 pm for an Easter meal. My niece and two great-grandnieces drove two hours from High Bridge, NJ, just to spend this special day with me and their "Yiayia," but unfortunately, the meal and service did not live up to the occasion. While the atmosphere was lovely - airy and remeniscent of a Greek island - the meal and experience was downhill from there. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by our waiter, Yianni, and seated in the front area by the windows as Voula had promised the day before. Yianni handed us our menus but when I asked for a physical Easter menu, Yianni repeatedly told me to look it up online. Only after I questioned this did he provide two small index cards listing the Easter specials for our party of five. As Greeks, we were all looking forward to the Arni (lamb), but at $40 per plate, it was incredibly disappointing. The meat was mostly bone and extremely chewy - not at all the "slow-cooked" consistency we expected. To make matters worse, the "house salad" listed alongside the Arni (lamb) entree was just a handful of greens on the same plate. At this price point, a separate salad and a cup of Avgolemano soup should have been included. (The Avgolemano soup ordered separately at $10 a bowl {only offered in bowl size} was very tasty and enjoyed by all.) Throughout our meal, Yianni was often nowhere to be found, or seemingly preoccupied with on a tablet at the counter. We had to flag down a very accommodating young lady on staff to address our needs. We were also only served one small platter of pita cut into triangles with a tiny container of tzatseki for five people. When we asked for more, the second plate arrived without any sauce. Following our meal, we weren't even served any Tsoureki (Traditional Greek Easter sweet bread) for dessert as we had expected. I still left a $40 tip (over 18%) out of respect for our shared heritage and the holiday, but after a total bill of $262.11, we left feeling very let down. When family travels that far for a special holiday meal you hope for better. It's unfortunate that a neighborhood spot would offer such poor value and service on such a significant occasion.

There's a lovely rustic, yet high end vibe. It's also immaculate. Our server was fantastic...just the right balance of friendly, attentive and helpful. It was hard to choose appetizers because I actually wanted one of each. There aren't a lot of Mediterranean choices near where I live currently so my eyes were definitely WAY bigger than my stomach. That said, we shared the halloumi and three different dips served with warm pita. Then we added a last minute choice of grilled sweet sausage for my stepdad. Before we even received our appetizers, they brought a lovely pile of warm pita with delicious sides to accompany: olives, white bean spread, and red pepper hummus (I believe... whatever it was, it was delicious!). The appetizers were outstanding and it was really hard to pick a favorite. Each one of the dips was delightful: taramasalata, hummus, and eggplant. I tasted a bite of the sausage and I understood why my stepdad enjoyed it so much (perfectly cooked and just the right amount of seasoning). The appetizers were new to my mom and she truly enjoyed everything. Her main course was crabcakes and she raved about those as well. I chose the Souvlaki with a side of grilled vegetables and it was exactly what I wanted with perfectly spiced and not overcooked cubes of chicken. The other grilled chicken dish got a huge thumbs up...and that's from a super picky eater. We topped everything off by sharing a large piece of cake that was very decadent....and even though I love chocolate,.... no way I could've finished it by myself. It had an Oreo crust and the rest was a rich chocolate mousse. Next time? Baklava. Looking forward to going back to visit the fam and enjoying Maria's again. It was mostly cucumbers, and the feta cheese had a really strange flavor. I'm not sure what brand they use, but I've never tasted feta like that before, and not in a good way. It completely threw me off. That experience alone was enough to turn me away. I think I'll stick with the pricier Greek spots that I know are more consistent.

He was feeling like Greek food, and suggested Mythos based off the positive experiences he's had here in the past. This sounded great, so off we went. Mythos is a pretty spacious restaurant - the dining room is very open with tables scattered throughout the space. The chairs are kinda big and I would argue that it was a little cumbersome navigating the tables but overall not too bad. The kitchen is semi-open with a display case separating it from the dining room that looks like it holds food to be prepared. Their menu is pretty extensive without being overwhelming - all of the Greek staples were there. We were started with their house-made bread that came with black-eyed peas and some hummus. This was delicious, so much that we ordered dips as an app to complement the bread more mmm. We also started with the halloumi and a slice of spanakopita. The halloumi had a somewhat unique preparation - I'm used to a single slab that's maybe complemented with a sauce that I would need to slice. Instead, these were pre-sliced and placed on top of pita complemented with tomato and cucumber. This was delicious, all the flavors and textures worked well together. The spanakopita was really tasty - it was a healthy slice that we were able to share and again, super flavorful. For my main, I went with the garides mikrolimano which were shrimp prepared in a red wine-ish sauce, some feta, and served over rice. This was delicious - the sauce had layers of flavor and served as a great vehicle to unite the shrimp and the rice. Service was fine - we were taken care of promptly and food came out at a good pace. It was a little impersonal but I kind of expected that - I wouldn't go into this restaurant thinking you'll be getting an experience when it comes to the service - just straight to the point. Overall though, I thought the food at Mythos was excellent and I had a great experience. I would hesitate to return for another meal.

When we called to make reservations, we were told that they *usually* serve brunch (i.e., breakfast food) on Saturdays and Sundays, but they would not be doing so on Mother's Day because... well, Mother's Day. My mother-in-law doesn't like eggs, so totally fine! We proceeded with excitement. When we drove up we realized it was right next door to Greek Family Kitchen on Union Turnpike; a restaurant we've been to many, many times. It turns out that this restaurant is by the same owners. This was promising news, as we've always loved the food there! We were initially seated at a table at the front half of the restaurant, but another (very large) party was seated next to us and one of the children was watching cartoons loudly on an iPad with no headphones, so we asked if we could be moved outside or to the other end of the restaurant so we wouldn't have to be near the untenable racket. The staff was very kind and understanding, and moved us to the patio. There was a small hiccup with service, in that we were given a warm bottle of rosé -- I've worked service industry before, and I know how to chill a bottle in about five minutes (the old "spin it in the ice bucket with water" trick). I also know you shouldn't put a warm bottle of white or rosé wine at the table in front of a customer. The bottle should've been chilled in the kitchen, the wait station or behind the bar before it was taken to our table. But this is really a small matter -- not even worthy of docking half a star. We ordered zucchini chips, saganaki and a caesar salad to start -- splitting all. Delicious! We knew the dining experience would be elevated compared to the sister restaurant next door just by glancing around the dining room, but the food told us immediately that we were in for an upscale experience that rivaled the food we've always loved at the more down-home Greek Family Kitchen. Our mains arrived shortly thereafter (the Linguini Puttanesca and the Pear & Gorgonzola Ravioli) and did not disappoint. The food was light but also satisfying. Of course we sprang for dessert, too (it was Mother's Day, after all!). We got the Dubai Chocolate, which was rich but light all at the same time, replete with a snaking line of chocolate sauce across the plate which was interrupted at intervals with sprinklings of edible gold. Couldn't have been more pleased with what turned out to be a fantastically appropriate Mother's Day locale. We will definitely be returning!
