I've been to this place a few times. The coffee is average to good / decent but the only reason I have been a few times is because there was no alternative in the area. The quality drop over the past year is too significant even if a business is trying to downscale and cut costs during trying times. There is almost nothing on the menu that there used to be: focaccia, fresh sandwiches with quality ingredients/substance. The prices while always high are now completely unjustified for the quality and basic level of food they are offering. The choices on the menu are strange and some of the choices are not very edible. But the worst thing of all, as someone who loves nothing more than going to coffee shops and forming relationships with the people who run and work in these treasured small businesses, is that there is simply no soul in this place. No appetite to serve the customer in a way that feels positive, or helpful, or caring beyond the transaction. The attitude is: bare minimum, transaction, next order. No consideration for offering any of the basics that accompany a meal or coffee anywhere in the world. I hate to say this but when you're not into something you do it shows and what's the point if the customer and the product come last? Even if that's not the intention, that's how it comes across, strongly. Perhaps the business can stick to coffee and adopt a take away only model. A delightful little country store in the middle of the towns, main street. I imagine this place caters more to the casual visitor rather than the local resident, as indicated by the selection of items as well as the prices. Nonetheless, it is a quaint general store that carries many of the common knickknacks and sundries that you would expect to find in a store such as this. t's time that Tivoli General begins to understand the role they have in our community. Tivoli is a small village & Tivoli General should be a small village general store. You should have the feeling that you're walking into friendly Sam Drucker's General Store from Green Acres. Not so with Tivoli General. Firstly, the staff is never very nice when you come in & even less friendly when you ask a question like do you carry this, or where is that. Given that their prices are exorbitant, at least be nice. Next, this is a small village General Store, not Walmart. Show some flexibility at least. I showed up a few minutes before opening time to buy a dozen eggs so I could make breakfast for my family & they would not entertain the fantastic notion of being nice & letting me leave more than enough cash on the counter & be off. They needed to be dropped they use to make sandwiches to ordered which made them a four to five star place but now they are pre made and for $12.00 after two bites it had to be thrown it out afraid I would have gotten food posing the cheese and meat was so warm for sitting out for god nows how long. A great beautiful grocery/cafe. If you are looking for food, they have an amazing amount of items for such a small place. You can buy your dominos sugar for the same price as Hannaford, or buy locally made meat and dairy. I think the owners even sell bacon from pigs from their farm. In the small but great asian food section, I even found a can of ground pork and ham, which I have never seen outside of China. Great beer, great stuff. Also, had a delicious bahn mi and iced coffee. Came with a few others who were pleased with their food, which looked good. I'm vegetarian and they had run out of the chickpea sandwich when I was ordering. They had no more eggs so I couldn't get a breakfast sandwich either. I opted for the not inexpensive (8.50) avocado toast, which was fine, nothing special (unlike some avocado toast which I've had, this was literally a slice of toast with avocado spread on it and a few thinly sliced radish pieces). After receiving my toast, I noticed that there was in fact a small portion of the chickpea salad left and asked them to sell it to me but they said they didn't sell it separately, and what they had wasn't enough for a full sandwich, but they were making more of it. I said, "I wish you'd told me you were making more, I would have waited." They replied, "We're making it for tomorrow." I wondered what they planned to do with the dollop of remaining chickpea salad (add it to the new batch, maybe? Gross) but I didn't say anything more because I was pretty perturbed that after spending a total of $60 for a pretty meager lunch (3 sandwiches and two beverages) they couldn't just give me the little dollop of chickpea salad (or sell it to me, as I offered first to pay for it). In short, I would not be inclined to come back here. It was pricy and I don't think customer service is their strong suit. What a gift we have in our little town! A sweet general store that probably has more in common with Harrods food hall than a bodega upstate ny. But that's what's going down upstate. Especially in Tivoli where a thousand super rich Bard students roam deserted lanes and hamlets south of Hudson looking to feed themselves with something they recognize from the metropolitan lives they left behind all over the world. Tivoli General won't disappoint them. The bialy, biscuits and bread are AMAZING and baked by Kazio the co owner. The meat is locally sourced. The cold brewed coffee is pretty damned good. As others have reported the owners Kazio and his wife Natalie don't have a great bed side manner but neither do I. I think it's funny that they are rude and grumpy to a lot of their customers. It's amazing entertainment. Their staff are very sweet... Probably because they are terrified! It's like an old fashioned corner store. Gossip, intrigue and great food. Go on Mondays when the bialy are already pre prepared and you don't have to make a choice from the chaotic chalk board. A bialy for those who don't know is a baked rather than boiled bagel. This place is awesome. I always come by when I go upstate--amazing beer selection, amazing cheese selection and homemade bread?!?! It's like an instant picnic. They have excellent things. Yes, some are pricey... but that is because they are excellent. They also have all the basics you could want/need in a town populated by college students. I so wish it had been there when I went to Bard, but I'm so glad it's there now for when I visit! read more

What a super addition to this village! The lunches are delicious and the service is exceptional! The weekend was very busy, so clearly they are filling a needed void. Even with all the traffic in the store, they managed to serve everyone in a timely fashion, and were super friendly. So great to see customers who range from kids coming in to buy candy, to college students buying supplies and weekenders in for a delicious lunch. The beer selection is outstanding! read more

Really wanted to like this place but come on! The first time we tried it we paid $4 each for a drink called a "Thai" iced coffee, which consisted of some ice, some cold coffee, and some lumps of sweetened condensed milk squeezed into the bottom of the cup by the kid behind the counter. Not exactly sure what's so "Thai" about that, nor why it cost $4 per cup, but whatever. We got suckered by the name, I guess. We tried going back one more time, only to be met by their obnoxious and super grouchy counter staff, apparently defensive about the shop's ridiculous hours. We waited 20 min for them to open at 9:30 am, watching at least 6 or 7 adults (non students) get turned away by some annoyed girl who kept unlocking the door to say, angrily "we open at 9:30," then slamming the door shut again. Meanwhile, a swarm of hipster types gathered outside, also waiting. By the time the huffy and very off-putting girl opened the place, we'd lost our spot in the amorphous "line" and didn't want to wait another 1/2 hour to be served. We went to Murray's up the street instead and were very happy. Should have just gone there in the first place. read more
