I found this place nearly by accident on DoorDash, as I ordered 2 dishes of pancakes for delivery. I can't say much about the inside but my Dasher might be able to. However, I wasn't too satisfied with my pancakes, nor was the other person I was eating them with at my home. The pancakes, despite coming more than 20 minutes away, came cool, and weren't a big enough size, despite only having 3 pancakes in the plastic tray. My mom believes they could have made these too far in advance, and these had been sitting out for too long. The only good thing they did was add fruits (strawberries and blackberries) to them. However, while I ate the strawberries, I had to switch the blackberries with my friend, who also ate a second tray, who actually enjoy these fruits. I know nearly nothing about the interior ambiance. I know where it is, having had previous experience bringing someone to and from there years ago, but the inside is what I lack, having never been inside the place. However, even the outside, just about a mile off Rte 9G on the Main sidestreet into Germantown, to be worthwhile, just not for those pancakes. I find a lack of beverages on their list through DoorDash for stuff ai'd be able to drink, and those they do have are odd lattes, and similar. read more

A great place to stop for lunch. I had the Swiss Cheese Panini, a sandwich with fresh bread and tasty swiss, and a slice of pepperoni pizza. Both were huge, tasty, and perfect. After exploring the main street of Tivoli, we took a short ride over to "downtown" Germantown, NY to enjoy lunch at Otto's Market (215 Main St.); one of our favorite local places for breakfast or deli lunch sandwiches. Otto's is also a small grocery store which carries local produce, locally baked breads and pastries, and delicious coffee. My one-sentence review: "Fresh, made-to-order sandwiches (though they also carry pre-made, grab and go sandwiches as well), at sensible prices, in a bright and comfortable setting--indoor as well as outdoor dining." We've done breakfast and lunch sandwiches a few times over the last two years since visiting our son and daughter-in-law in the area. It's also a good place to pick up gourmet groceries, produce, local baked goods, fresh bagels and coffee. We were excited to see that they had the full array of Dr. Brown's sodas. So she eagerly a Black Cherry and I went with the original Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray. What a treat, I haven't had one of those in decades. We also picked up a bag of Sweet Potato chips which went well with our sandwiches. My wife ordered the Turkey Club--siced to order turkey, crispy bacon, lettuce, ripe tomato, and mayo on grilled sourdough bread. I ordered the Italian Combo--ham, salami, Mortadella, Provolone, shredded lettuce, and slices of hot Cherry Peppers on a super fresh Ciabatta. You could probably put anything between the sides of that Ciabatta roll and it would taste fantastic. We enjoyed our sandwiches and Dr. Browns, while doing a bit of people watching. We both earned "clean plate" certificates (suitable for framing) and left thankful that such a quality place like Otto's exists for breakfast or lunch in the immediate area. read more

We were there for the opening night of the pizza menu. It was pure chaos! Orders were mixed up. Orders were lost. So forgive the opening night jitters. The pizza was only OK. I'm a city guy and a connoisseur of BECSPK, aka bacon egg and cheese sandwich with salt pepper and ketchup. City prices $5.99 Here it is $10.00. Most lunch sandwiches run $7-12 and honestly are very flavorful. Figure lunch for one is $15 avg. Some employees are better than others plus new faces appear quite regularly. They do use and promote local farms which is good for the community. They have a row of tables against the wall so you can dine in or take out. I've lived in Columbia county for over twenty years. I remember the real Otto's and Otto himself. A kind, friendly man who enjoyed serving the community and the community loved him back. I rarely leave reviews, but today is special. Today I am sick and tired of Otto's. First of all, Otto's is ludicrously expensive. For example, a packet of pistachios is nearly triple the cost of the same packet at Hannaford. Bags of chips are comically overpriced. I could go on and on. Everyone knows it's expensive. I'm okay with expensive sometimes. No problem. What I'm not okay with is the absolutely unbelievable rudeness of the staff at the front. We are not trespassing! We CHOOSE to visit! Today I had a serious craving for a baguette. I drove to numerous shops. Hearty Roots, Mel (closed), Hannaford, Olde Hudson, Morningstar .. zilch. No baguettes. So I decided to stop by Otto's on the return trip home. The store was empty. There was one baguette. I tried making some friendly chit-chat .. no acknowledgment. I explained in a friendly manner how I had traveled near and far for a baguette and how happy I was to find one .. no acknowledgement. I asked him how he was doing .. he said NOTHING. I tipped the bastard .. AGAIN NOTHING. I said goodbye .. he said nothing! I am once and for all finished with Otto's. Keep your overpriced crap and rude, unfriendliness. Who needs it?! nice general store/eatery, clean,organized,well stocked, great selection. some of rhe staff could be a bit kinder, if you want the best tasting and most important, essemblied sandwhich in the world then this is the place. we had the thanksgivinng and the buffalo caluiflower very tasty and the way it was made was even more impressive, not this mountain of filling piled high in the middle of the sandwitch (you cant fit in your mouth)which leaves the outside bite just bread and if you are lucky a bit of something, no the perfect layering of everything on the entire bed of bread makes it enjoyable end to end. We come to grab a pastry and espresso which they have currently sponsoring Touchy Coffee out of Albany- delicious, delicious, delicious espresso. At the register - one doesn't really get a "welcome" it's more what did you get- move on fell. The deli is good - a little more than we like to pay especially considering what you get but over all pretty good. The quality of products, produce and service here has consistently declined, while the prices have continued to rise (with even some routine products that you can now find at Hannaford having a 25% markup, and $pecialty packaged items looking like they've been on the shelf forever)... The only plus is the deli still creates good sandwiches and other takeaway, but the attitude of people working there isn't what it once was, and even simple things, such asking for a bit more water in an espresso drink, seems to be a challenge (or, like yesterday, resulted in a literal scowl)... It is what it is, only shop in town, which I guess is why it doesn't need to better. read more

What happened to Ottos? We are from the area and this place used to be great but it has been rearranged and there is a lot less merchandise to select from. It also used to have an amazing deli with wonderful specials and a super friendly staff. I miss both. The deli seems bare minimum and the service is much less friendly than in the past. Used to have wonderful baked goods as well but the selection is also limited and looks like it is not so fresh. This is my third visit since new management and I really miss what made Ottos great. Four stars as it is the only food store within 10 miles when it snows. read more

I stopped in here less than a week ago with my boyfriend and his aunt....such a quaint little grocery store...old fashioned setting with everyday modern conveniences. The produce was delicious, and the hot chocolate was made by hand. Ottos has the best lox bagel I've ever eaten. Bagel is soft but a little crunchy on the outside (from Black Seed in NYC), cream cheese is thick but not gloppy nor too thin. It comes with tomato, capers, and red onion-- which in my opinion are the three essential toppings, none of this cucumber or microgreen business. The portion of salmon is generous. Finally, it is served open faced and sliced into quarters which I personally think is the ideal. AND it's only $8. read more

They have fine pastry, a deli section and some light grocery options as well. A group of wealthy investors from Brooklyn, NY descended with illusions of grandeur...the prices used to be a tad higher than most places-but didn't mind paying because the NICEST hard working locals of all ages were employed, and given health insurance. Dear Otto: I'm sorry it took this long for me to write a review of your establishment, which I frequent more or less five times a week (okay, sometimes seven times a week, if we're being honest). Maybe it's better that I waited two years to review it so I can attest to how consistently excellent not just the curated selection of both standard and gourmet items, but how consistently excellent the staff there is, as well. Consistency is key in any business, of course, but living just up the road in Hudson, as I do, I've seen how hard that consistency can be to maintain when you're a small business in an area where the old "good help is hard to find" adage proves so true. I've only known the staff at Otto's to grow, not turnover, and that is what stands out. They get to know your name. They get to know how you take your coffee (or, in my case, how I take my grilled cheese sandwich). The point is that they've been there long enough to be in routine with one another, and it shows in excellent, efficient service, particularly during lunchtime when the place is packed. It's nice to see a place where everyone pitches in to clean, stock, make a sandwich, whatever needs doing. At the deli counter, there's always friendly faces, amazing sandwiches and a rotating selection of fresh, awesome offerings. The soups have particularly evolved to greatness, as have the baked goods and variety of Our Daily Bread loaves. Personally, I feel you can't get a better bagel in the upper Hudson Valley than the ones you can get at Otto's in the morning. I've always liked that if you ask Otto for something that he doesn't carry, he's always willing to order it and try out how others like it. (That's how he started carrying my beloved olive tortilla chips from the weirdly named Food Should Taste Good company.) I couldn't recommend the place more highly, or its sister store Germantown Variety just across the street, which is maintained with the same high standards. Heard about this place for years and finally made the trek up. This is a gem in otherwise deserted Germantown. They carry farm fresh eggs, fruits + vegetables, bread, and they stocks ton of local, natural brands from grass fed yogurt to homemade pasta. Definitely leans Italian - all the better for me. The deli in the back has a wide variety of sandwiches, salads and sides to-go and fresh coffee. They make breakfast and even had a few French pastries up front near the register. My wife and I visited this little shop to get breakfast stuff while honeymooning in the Hudson Valley. We got fresh eggs, freshly squeezed orange juice, bacon, some asparagus and some really, really delicious local bread! We were so delighted by the whole experience we decided to return for lunch for their sandwiches. And boy was it a good idea! On our second visit we also had the pleasure of meeting Otto; who was just wonderful. Otto packs your items in good old fashioned brown bags without handles while in an apron. I have been going to Ottos since it opened, actually before it opened my keys were locked in the car and they came out to help me while renovating. Its very nostalgic, BUT also has a lot of organic and hard to find real foods. We order our steaks and hamburger there, the meat is hand-cut and hung to cure...very good meat. Otto is so obliging. When we asked for this special cola we wanted China cola he ordered us a case of it, and there is fresh produce which Germantown has been lacking for a long time. We love his breakfast sandwiches egg on a hard roll with sausage and cheese. The best deli turkey since they roast it right there. They will also cut it the thickness you want in case you want hot turkey sandwiches at home. The General store has two adorable cats ( yes I am a cat lover) AND has things you can't find in most places. The only thing I wish was the potato salad offered tastes like horseradish, they have an Amish egg and potato salad for those liking that taste. Blech! Met a friend for coffee, eat in. Cappuccino was barely warm. It's not rocket science. Heat the cup first with hot water in order to serve a hot beverage. Especially in winter. The pecan pie square was terrible. Pastry crust dry as sawdust and way oversalted. I've heard from locals the place used to be better. I live locally and stop for odds and ends often. The quality of everything has declined in the last two years. Sometimes the fresh food is slapped together. Unless it's a regular mover in the grocery area, beware - they don't check their shelf stock often. I found chili sauce and salad dressing that expired a year prior, for instance. Most disappointing of all is the legion of people who work there that don't smile, don't address you when you're standing there, and don't seem to have much joy (there are a few exceptions.) A great place to stop and get a fresh bite to eat in Germantown. My friend and I ducked in here on a rainy day for lunch. You order your food from a deli counter in the back of the market and there are two tables in the front, along with a barstool counter. I ordered the chicken salad special which was made with Cajun chicken salad, lettuce, bacon, and tomato on a hard roll. It was $8 and I bought a soda/chips separately from the market itself, with my whole meal costing $11. Not too bad. It was delicious and tasted really fresh. We saw many locals come in to pick up groceries while we ate. Very friendly environment and staff. They carry a lot of natural and local grocery brands + produce. Would come back again as it seems it is the only casual and low-key eatery spot in Germantown. read more
